Formula 1, Round 13: Hungary part 4

f1vlad 08-06-2006 10:23 AM

Yeah I can't believe Schumacher did it, he totally could have grabbed third place. I think he's lost his mind. Much like Alonso during that Free Practice.
JoD 08-06-2006 10:27 AM

What a fantastic race!!!! I'm really happy to have seen Jense take his first win, and kudos to Pedro for a stellar performance. The look on Jenson's dad's face was just great. :)

Of course I was sad to see Kimi go out of the race - for whatever reason. It was beautiful to see that in fact FA can have bad luck. (I was beginning to think it ONLY ever happened to Fisi and Kimi after last year!) Part of me was wishing a bit that MS would have stayed in to the finish just to make the points differential a little closer, and thus the next races that much more exciting. But I also did a Nelson "ha ha" when Michael retired.

And, for the record.... You can say what you want about Kimi's lack of presence the interview room, but at least he doesn't sound like Elmer Fudd (aka Nick Heidfeld)...
rupertberr 08-06-2006 10:32 AM

One of the few races I got to watch live this year and this was a great one.

Couldn't believe how fast Alonso and Schumacher moved up. Alonso looked unbeatable in the rain. Kimi, damn! I would like to hear what both drivers have to say about that crash. Alonso's right rear tire guy needs to go under suicide watch. Michael would have gotten a penalty if he hadn't broken, or he better have.

The podium was great.
speedyHAM 08-06-2006 10:39 AM

Holy Cow.

Did anyone pick Button to win? I doubt I got more than 5 points for this race.

It was a driveshaft for Alonso, http://www.f1racing.net/en/news.php?newsID=126690

I think this was probably the best race since the Euro GP in 99.
Some of you guys are UNREAL!!!

Kimi slowed in a HUGE pack of cars and JPM hit him at the USGP....you flamed JPM TO NO END...

Now Kimi rams Liuzzi in a 100% OPEN TRACK....and you blame him slowing....

The fanboyism has got to stop....it was a bonehead move by a great driver....it happens...

100% Kimi's fault

Great race though...MS 100% was a jackazz...hopefully his fighting with DLR and Nick was what put him out...what was he thinking???
this b*tching has to stop, too. Its a defense mechanism so they feel better, let them deal with their problems in their own way. We all know what happened so it makes no difference what people take out of it. It was a *****ty mistake that shouldnt have happened and would have given Kimi the win had he stayed in, but such is Kimi in F1.

still my favorite race of the season though.

This is pretty funny!
Jonathon Noble writing for AutoSport
...Television coverage of practice had failed to pick up Schumacher overtaking Kubica and Alonso, and those involved had declined to explain in detail what happened.

But Schumacher dropped a hint that all was not right when he repeatedly told reporters to look at the television pictures to understand why he had overtaken the two cars.

He said: "It is a bit difficult to explain. I think it is much easier if people look at the video. You can see more and things explain themselves."

Indeed, on-board footage from Kubica's car suggests that Alonso may have conducted a bit of gamesmanship to catch Schumacher out.

The footage shows Kubica driving around right behind Alonso's car as they brake for the penultimate corner - the last turn before the entry to the pits. Although it is not shown on the footage, Schumacher is believed to be closing up on the pair at this point.

As Alonso passes the apex of the corner, the Spaniard does not get on the power as he normally would be expected to - and maintains a very slow pace. Kubica appears surprised at this behaviour and has to back off himself to avoid hitting the back of the Renault.

With Alonso still losing speed and traveling very slowly, Schumacher is then seen to come around the outside of the pair and overtake them before heading into the pits.

Although there is no proof that Alonso acted deliberately to try and sucker Schumacher into overtaking him, Schumacher's comments suggest that he believes the Spaniard's behaviour was not straightforward.
Drivers talking about the failure of Bridgestone wets at Hungary...
Both Toyotas had been quick this weekend. They gridded 6th, and 8th, yet they each lost 6 positions during the first lap!Their words afterwards:
Ralf Schumacher, finished 6th
...the rain was especially difficult at the start of the race. The track was really wet and we just could not warm up the tyres. It was like running on smooth ice and we were extremely slow so it was pretty hard work.

As the track got drier... the Bridgestone standard wets worked extremely well even in dry conditions... On dry tyres we were quick and I was able to make up ground and take 6th place.
Wow! So the wets were for a warmer tempature range...
Jarno Trulli
...during the first stint we had a major struggle for grip which got worse as the rain increased.

As the track got drier and the temperatures went up, the car became quicker...
Williams drivers:
Nico Rosberg
It was very difficult to drive in the wet on our tyres today. In fact, it was almost impossible because the rear of the car was so nervous.

Mark Webber
The first lap was unreal with a few big moments as I had zero grip in the rear of the car and struggled to get the tyres going.
Ferrari:
Felipe Massa
...as the track began to dry, we began to run very strongly, even more so as soon as I fitted the dry weather tyres, to such an extent that I set the fastest race lap.
Thoughts on Bridgestone wets from Bridgestone:
Hisao Suganuma , Technical Manager of Bridgestone Motorsport
...It seems that our standard wet tyre is a bit too hard for this track and therefore in the early stages of the race the Bridgestone runners were slightly disadvantaged. As the track dried up however, they were able to pick up pace...
So with Bridgestone's wets being too hard, it explains why Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher decided to stay on the Bridgestone wets... Though they had one of the fastest cars on the track in the dry, they had lost too many positions in the wet. But their B'Stones were able to turn competitive times in drying conditions, so they gambled that instead of losing positions in the pits to change to drys, they could hang on to the finish for more points. Michael, Jean Todt, and Ross have all said as much. Oh well! Such is racing during a tire war! C'est la vie!
:)

Kubica out for an under weight car. What a crpa end to a great race for a rookie:

Kubica disqualified from Hungarian GP

Sunday, August 6th 2006, 18:28 GMT

Robert Kubica has been disqualified from the Hungarian Grand Prix after his car was found to be 2kg under the minimum weight.

The BMW Sauber driver, making his racing debut with the team this weekend, had finished in seventh position, but his F1.06 car was found to be underweight in the post-race scrutineering.

"The Stewards accept that the fact of the car being underweight was entirely inadvertent and give credit to BMW Sauber F1 Team for their assistance and cooperation in dealing with this matter," said the race stewards in a statement.

"The reason for the car being underweight was explained as being attributable to excessive and unexpected tyre wear (and therefore weight loss) arising through continued use of wet weather tyres in comparison to the accustomed and anticipated rate of wear for dry tyres.

"It is the Stewards view that the car did not comply with Article 4.1 of the 2006 FIA Formula One Technical Regulations. The Stewards decision is that the car be excluded from the results."

Kubica's disqualification means Ferrari drivers Felipe Massa and Michael Schumacher get promoted one place each, the Brazilian to seventh and the German to eighth.

Schumacher retired from the race but was still classified as ninth. With the point scored, he reduced the gap to championship rival Fernando Alonso to 10 points with five races remaining.

Raikkonen blames Liuzzi for crash

Sunday, August 6th 2006, 16:33 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen's carFinn Kimi Raikkonen blamed Vitantonio Liuzzi for the crash that put both men out of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Raikkonen, who had started from pole position and was in second place when the accident happened, run into the back of Liuzzi on lap 26 while trying to lap the Toro Rosso driver.

Raikkonen's McLaren ended up heavily damaged, wrecking his chances of fighting for victory.

"I could do nothing to avoid the collision with Liuzzi," said Raikkonen. "He really slowed down on the racing line and there was just nowhere for me to go except into the back of him."

"The start of the race was really good for me with my first set of Michelin tyres working really well, but after the first stop I was really struggling with grip on the front, and as a result Fernando Alonso was able to build on his lead.

"It is never great to end a race like that especially when there was every opportunity to win it, but we just have to move forward, and I really appreciate the gesture of Liuzzi coming to apologise."
Button Gets Breakthrough F-1 Win, Ending 6-Year Wait (Update1)
2006-08-07 02:59 (New York)

(Adds Alonso's championship lead in last paragraph.)

By Dan Baynes
Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- After 13 previous appearances on a
Formula One podium, Jenson Button finally got to stand on the top
tier by claiming his first victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Honda driver Button mastered a drying Hungaroring track
after starting his 113th race in 14th place on the grid to win by
more than 30 seconds over McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa.
``It's good that I don't have to do those interviews any
more, when they say `you've done 113 Grands Prix and you haven't
had a win,''' Button, 26, said at the post-race news conference.
``It will take a big weight off my shoulders.''
Button's breakthrough victory, which lifted him to sixth in
the driver's championship, came six years after he became
Britain's youngest F-1 driver when he raced for Williams. He
finished second four times in 2004.
Button took control of yesterday's 70-lap race when world
championship leader Fernando Alonso retired on lap 52 because of
a mechanical problem. He then cruised through the closing laps to
become the first Briton to win a Grand Prix since David Coulthard
three years ago in Australia.
``The last 10 laps were fantastic and I didn't have to push
that hard,'' Button added. ``I just enjoyed myself and let it
sink in. I was just thinking about what to say in the press
conference really.''
After getting the checkered flag, Button jumped out of his
car to hug the rest of his Honda team before taking his place
atop the podium. His father, John, wept in the crowd during the
trophy presentation.

Father's Relief

``He has won lots of races before, but it seems to have
taken so long in Formula One,'' John Button told ITV. ``No one is
counting the races any more. It's done and done in what a way, it
was just devastating.''
Button's victory also gave the Honda team its first win as a
Formula One constructor since 1967. Honda Motor Co. President
Takeo Fukui was trackside to receive the trophy given to the
winning manufacturer.
Button, who used a three-stop strategy, said the timing of
tire changes and refueling helped him navigate his way through
the pack after starting on the seventh row of the grid.
``It is an historic day for Honda,'' Nick Fry, chief
executive of the Honda Racing F1 Team, said in a statement. ``Now
that we have reached this important milestone, we know we have
what it takes to go on and do it again and again.''
The 18-race series takes a three-week break before resuming
at the Aug. 27 Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul. Alonso leads
seven-time champion Michael Schumacher by 10 points with five
races remaining. Button is a further 59 points back.
Schumi Conspiracy theory
I believe that Schumi was trying to punt Fischi off when Fischi made the pass on the outside. (first part of the race, maybe lap 13-15 or so)
This was the corner where Shumi lost his left-front wing.
It looks to me that with the pass almost complete by Fishy- Mike yanked the wheel to the left to either a) tuck back behind Fishy and try to hang tight with him, OR b) tap Fishy's right rear with his left front. I really think he was trying to punt Fishy off there, and missed.

Did anyone else see this particular pass and think the same?

I think he just clipped the curbing and/or had the back end step out on him. His move just looked like a typical F1-style jerky countersteer to catch the slide and not spin out.

It was IMHO his fault for sticking his nose somewhere he didn't have the grip to keep it, but IMHO the contact wasn't deliberate.

MS is an idiot.
But I think de la Rosa sort of punted him off to the run off that's why he didn't conceed the position the first time he cut the chicane.
He should've limp the car home for the last 2 laps. Ferrari could've arrange for Massa to slow down and not pass him so he can at least get an extra point.

You would make a terrible team principal. :p
KAX 08-07-2006 05:22 PM

i think De La Rosa's attempt was just a last ditch effort. MS could have stayed on the track but he chose to go through the chicane so he wouldn't be passed. If you look at that shot again, he had plenty of room on the track and he was going slow so he wouldn't have understeered off, he just turned the wheel and went straight through. I think both of those moves were kind of bone-head moves but i dont blame either or them for what they did, they just wanted more points.

Great race for Kubica! I had him for 10th, so if he hadn't been underweight I'd have been tied for second in the race, and fifth overall. As it was I only got 10 pts for Ralf and 5 for Massa. Can't wait for Turkey! (Gotta get picks in *now* !)
