Interior Color Change Tutorial: Radio and HVAC part 2

MarylandEcstasy 04-05-2006 06:51 PM
Well the website that trunkmonkey gives at the beginning has been sold out of red bulb covers for the last 2 months. And they were supposed to be in stock as of 3/31/06. But now they are out of stock until like 4/20 or something. Is there any place that sells .2" red bulb covers because i can't find any?
I was under the impression that the orange bulb condoms would look as good as the red may, plus be a bit bright for my taste, and they're great..I love them. I don't have an STI cluster yet but the bulb color should match it well.. thats just me though against personal preference, red is always a good choice opposed to orange, just a little too dark IMO.
shadow46x2 04-09-2006 06:46 PM

anyone have any additional pics of the blue backlighting?...the blue/yellow combo earlier looked sweet, and was curious to see a few more examples of it...

also, anyone who has done blue....how does the double-bag look?...how dim is it as well?

Do the LEDs instead of the bulb rubbers. They look much better
and are much brighter. :D
vf22-wrx 04-09-2006 08:48 PM

I scraped off the film and custom made all my LED fitting and it looks killer!!!...I also am making a fade (because I scraped the green film and factory fade off the cluster) and I am going to slip it behind the number cards and it will look killer...I'll post pics when I get around to it...so far, blue LED's is good!
intence 05-14-2006 12:34 AM

has anyone who has used the red condom method care to post up any pics?
Jonnyfilmboy 05-14-2006 10:57 AM

Check out the first post. Those are red condoms.

As for the red LED replacement in the radio, has anyone done that? I figure it will take some soldering but shouldn't be too hard. Just scary.

The writeup for the bulb to LED in the HVAC, keyring and instrument cluster panel is here:

I just did this mod in my STi this last week, looks great. I did the OEM boost gauge, key ring, radio + screen, and HVAC. Had to trim the bulb covers a bit but it wasn't a problem. I double-bagged them except for the boost gauge. They are a little dark at night but I know where everything is so it's not really a problem... looks 100x better than the green too. Thanks Trunk_Monkey for the write-up on all of these.

So two questions:

Has anyone had those red bulb "condoms" on for a long time. Say a few years? I noticed someone mentioned they fade to orange with time. Can we get a little vote going on here to see how long you had them for and if they faded?

Also, sounds like double bagging them makes red too dark. Has anyone tried using 2.3watt bulbs (#2723) for key ring and HVAC and not just the factory boost gauge? Also, I'm wondering why you guys are double bagging those in the first place? Is it too bright, too orange with only a single "condom"?

The reason I'm asking all thise is because I want to get this right the first time and have all the lights match the STi gauge cluster as closely as possible. Also, I would like to know how many extra wattage bulbs to get.

Thanks ALL for any input! Really appreciate it!
Trunk_Monkey 08-11-2006 06:07 PM

They only fade to orange if they slip off and let white light through, take the bulbs out and check for that.

How did you do the HVAC one???

I tried doing the HVAC today and discovered that the back of the HVAC looks totally different then what is pictured here. Also, instead of there been 2 bulbs there are actually 4 of them and the worst part is that they are smaller so the .2 bulb covers do not fit. The bulbs were smaller then the ones found on the OEM turbo gauge or the key hole ring. Each individual bulb sits in a plastic holder which in turn screws into the HVAC. When I tried to slip .2 covers over the bulb and on top of the plastic holder the covers stayed on but the bulb would not fit into the mounting hole in the HVAC. So basically I had to put everything back together the way it was and call it a day. :(

Anyone else have that problem on 04? I guess I might have to get the .12 bulb covers instead and try my luck with those.

i can do the red light mod for anyone fully fuctional and dimming for any 05+ hvac with parts and return shipping i can do it all with my parts included (leds, resistors, wiring soldering ) and have it shipped back to you for 60$

if i need to pay the site for any seller fees pm me and let me know
06wrxkiid 09-10-2006 03:12 PM

is it different, for a 06 tr? .. any theard for it?
WizardGandoff 09-10-2006 06:59 PM

everytime i did that to my gauge cluster the red condoms would turn lighter in color to a pink after a lil while. is there an actual red bulb you can put in there
antidote11 09-10-2006 09:47 PM

Yeh , don't use the condoms, use an LED. I have the link at work and will post it here manana. This place sells colored LEDs of all sizes and they look WAY better than the condoms do.

As far as the 06 - I tried to change my key ring to a blue LED, but it is different than the 04-05s. The lights are the same, but the recipticle that the bulb goes into is much more shallow. Even after shaving the LED down like 50%, I still couldn't get it to fit. So, I left it alone. :(

As far as the cluster and radio/HVAC, I haven't tried those yet. The keyring was a breeze on my 04, but in my TR, there was no way in hell to put an LED in there. It was also much more diificult to get to the bulb. The only way to change the color would be by using a condom.

Can someone red out the 06 radio screen following these instructions? I know the stereos are different, but are they more or so the same when it comes to the electronic board?
quaam 09-26-2006 04:04 PM

I got the condoms gonna try it now on the 06 radio / hvac... wondering if I should disconnect the battery or not.... +1 for lazyness!
When I did this a few years ago, I did the whole car with blue led's. I then changed the button areas on the radio to yellow leds. So now the guages are backlit blue with yellow needles, and the radio lcd is blue with yellow buttons.
I also designed a boost guage to fit in the Subaru din pocket that fits where the clock goes. This was blue 7 segment led too.

does anyone know what size the bulbs are in the radio ???
Mechie3 02-05-2007 02:49 PM

Started this yesterday, a little dissapointed. I'm going to add auxiliary lighting behind the radio (nice color, just too dim). As stated before, the auto HVAC controls are made from green plastic and the blue didn't match. Going to go red for those then.
Mechie3 02-13-2007 10:20 AM

Shaky cell phone pic. I broke a wire going to the left side of the radio, so that part isn't lit up.

In my 05. Thats with the map lights on too, the hvac color looks off but in person its perfect. I just used 2 5mm leds for each knob, worked great.
cabear 02-22-2007 03:19 AM

has anyone figured out what direct replacement leds to use for the radio?

if i read it right, 194 bulbs will fit in the HVAC but then i also read 74 bulbs and even 24, all from autoillumination.com

has anyone cleared this up?
alexkraemer 03-03-2007 12:45 PM

part number for the bulb assembly?
Hey guys,
I just did the HVAC light change (to red) but as I was screwing in the second bulb, it fell down into the nether regions of the car. Should I try to start dismantling my car or is it simply better to buy a new light assembly? If so, does anybody have a part number?

Thanks,
Alex
sfwrx 04-26-2007 12:56 AM

cool....thanks. I'm doing it now...hoping the red won't fade over time.
biker921 04-26-2007 08:51 AM

Does the voltage matter with this mod in the HVAC?
Mechie3 04-26-2007 08:19 PM

Voltag always matters. Do you have a TR with manual HVAC or the base wrx/limited with auto hvac? If you have the auto, stick a red led (bright, ~3000mcd ~$2 @ radioshack) inside each button and an appropriate resistor (330 ohms).
biker921 04-26-2007 09:06 PM

I have the TR, do I need a resistor using the given site?
sfwrx 04-29-2007 01:20 AM

Update: I did it for my 04 WRX. Works great! It got easy with a bottle of nail polish remover. Less LED on 04 models (I cover only 5 LEDS). You can shine a light and look through it to see which LED you need to change.

Does anyone know what Mechie is talking about? He's talking about a resistor for the auto controls. I have the manual HVAC and read the instructions above and monkey says nothing about resistors. My only questions are of monkey's provided site. The site diesn't say what the color of the bulbs are. My other question is of the voltage. And can anyone tell me what the Ma is?
JourdanWithaU 05-04-2007 10:53 PM

Thins might sound retarded...I have a 98' Legacy Outback And I got a new stereo and it is a different color than the gauges and the HVAC...I think the gauges will be pretty much the same...Does anyone have any ideas on how to tackle the HVAC?(My HVAC is located above the slide-out cup holders...not at the bottom like the Imrezas)

Electrical devices are always designed to operate at a certian voltage. If you are doing a direct replacement of stock bulbs with off the shelf led replacements, you don't need to wory. The place you bought the ready to plug in leds already added resistors. I was referring to the mod with the auto hvac where you wire in your own LED's and you then need a resistor so you don't overdrive and burn out the leds. The direct replacement option isn't an option with the auto hvac as it is with the manual.

Crap..!
Mechie3 05-27-2007 10:38 AM

Youlet the magic smoke out! Chances are some bare wires touched, things got hot, and you either burned out a capactitor, or something. I would take it all apart, make sure there are no bare wires that weren't there before/etc and put it back together. It could have just been finger oils or something short circuiting and smoking.
impreziveWRX521 05-27-2007 05:41 PM

i didn't cut, or change any of the wires around, only unclipped them. oils from my fingers could be a possibility though. i'm going to take it apart and check all the lights and wires. hopefully nothing is damaged.
impreziveWRX521 05-31-2007 03:50 PM

ok i put it all back together, and now the fuel, temp, and spedometer don't work. i looked at all the wiring, checked all the connections, and they just dont work.

the tachometer DOES work, but thats it. is there anything else i should look for, or is it time to start looking for a new gauge pack?
biker921 06-01-2007 08:32 PM

OK, I had a problem with the right parts. I got different answers from different people and had to trust someone. I trusted the wrong person and ordered the LED's you see below. I took the green condoms off but am at a fork in the road. I can't decide to use red condoms or use the right red LED's. Can I get some answers as to the proper part numbers and some testimonials???

Take the back off of your gauges and look at the circuit board. Look specifically for burned components. If you see some, you might need a new board. You dealer might be able to order the board separately to save you some money IF that is what happened.

Biker, Why dont you try Radial Ultrabright Leds (175 Degrees viewing angle)

I placed 8 leds with a viewing angle of 60 but thats not good enough, i still have hotspots or places where its completely dark.

Im gonna try the 175 leds within a week, although they need a 470 ohm resistor.

LEDS will be a better solution i think, its bright and clear... im going for the color blue ( the most difficult color i think ) thats why i want to use leds, the condoms are just aqua and not really blue.... choice is up to you.
biker921 06-08-2007 09:28 AM

I'm feeling really retarded right now. I bought some led's that are just the two thin wires at the end, but they are replacing bulbs that had the wires wrapped around the bottom of the bulb itself. I don't know if that really makes sense to you. Do you have an exact link to show me the bulb that will fit?
Celtric 06-08-2007 05:00 PM

I bought 3mm 12v leds with build in resistor, they dont really fit into the neo wedge top hole... i just keep them on top of it. Did this with the fog light switches. I dont really mind, just want to see blue light.

The hvac lights will be 5mm leds, so they wont fit too.. ill figure something out, try to be creative.

If you need help just ask :)

biker921 06-17-2007 08:45 PM

I'm sure it could be done in any color
Celtric 06-18-2007 02:20 AM
I like^. what'd you use to get those results. Think it could be done in white?
Yes, could be done in any color you want, be sure to use the right leds ( Minimal 175+ viewing angle and bright!)

For the glovebox, cigarette lighter and ashtray.. same leds! Just pull the old bulb out of the socket and cut the wires ( be sure theres no power on it )

I pushed the led into the socket, solder the wire and resistor (if needed).

Now you can still use the old wedge thingy so the led will stay in place just like the old bulb.

As for the foglight buttons, i had to think for a solution here!

You can see the picture below how i solved this with my leds :

The results are GOOD & bright !

As you can see i used a red bulb (not with a condom) if the foglights are on .

These leds run on 3.4 Volt 20mA (473nm / 150mcd) 5mm waterclear.
I used a 470 Ohm resistor.

Btw, i sanded off the green firm from the foglight buttons.. when im about to do the instrument cluster ill try without sanding first.

on the doors is there any threads on how to change them from green to red?

Thanks!
jma_1000 09-10-2007 07:59 AM

did anyone figure out how to make this work on later models? MY07 has a green plastic cap painted grey on the HVAC controls, will nail polish remover 'lighten' the plastic enough to let red through? right now it looks brown, and nasty.
cXc5120 10-31-2007 11:39 AM

Does anyone have any ideas on how to change the gauge needles? I have a 03 so they are yellow, I would really like them either red or blue.

Thanks

Instructions for the automatic HVAC (red is the only color that works well):
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1130479&highlight=270+resistor

Gauges needles can't be changed. The needles themselve are a yellow plastic.
