i finally got the clock to stay for good. i went to target and found this glue, that is suppoed to be super stong, and heat resistant up fo 400 deg F. It seemed like the same consistency of silicone sealant. i put it in, and it stayed solid through a hot day.

I originally tried mounting mine with electrical tape. Everybody warned against it but at 12:30 a.m. sometimes it's hard to take sound advice. Next day it fell off, so I decided to use copper wire taped to the back of the unit to push the unit flush with the dremmel and continued to use the packing tape (the brown tape) to further hold the unit in place. No complaints yet and it looks great! I'll be setting up my friend's unit probably tonight, and I'll get pictures. Good times!

I put one of these Radioshack clocks in my '05 WRX last May! see the link here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=577061
I wired it into the cigarette lighter wiring in the center console, ran the probe thru the firewall and in front of the radiator. It has worked well on the original batteries since last May. I've buffed off the Radioshack logo as well. Only recently have I noticed that the LCD display is a bit dimmer on the coldest mornings so I suspect that it will need new batteries soon. I like the alarm function on that blinks the red LED below 35 degrees or so, but the audible alarm needs to be eliminated! That 's the next mod....When I change the batteries I will clip the sound maker's wires.

I think during the summer I'll stick the ext temp sensor on the intercooler near throttle body and cover it with thermo tape so I will know when to use my DIY manual IC water sprayer.

Does anyone know if this unit could be affixed to the dead panel that is next to the cupholder? Does it size out right? I guess you could just glue it or double back tape it on, but I'm wondering if you could get a cleaner install in that area?
Thanks,
MAK

My thermo fell down with the original duct tape method and I think I've found a much better solution. I used the silicone that you glue windshields in with. It's semi-rigid, not affected by heat, and strong/sticky as heLL.

If I do this mod, I think I will try to run the wire to the back of the car, away from the exhaust.
If I do this mod, I think I will try to run the wire to the back of the car, away from the exhaust.
Why run it to the back? The airflow is thru the front and you'l likely get falsely high readings with the sensor located toward the rear due to engine heat blowing back and under the car. I just relocated mine to a spot lower in front of the radiator than just behind the front bumper because of heat that rose off the radiator while idling causing the display to read many degrees higher that the true air temp above the road.

I was thinking maybe a rear wheel well. My thoughts were to get away from the engine and away from the ground.

Hey,
I'm glad to see this thread is still stickied and well recieved. Everyones clocks look great.
I did want to update everyone though - as many have said, duct tape doesn't work very well! As soon as it got a bit warmer out, my duct tape began to peel off also. I also remounted the sensor.
I updated the original post to include what I did to combat these problems.

The clock is held on to the dash with small circles of Velcro, two behind it and one above it that secures it to the profile of the dash. I have since disassembled the clock and clipped the wire that goes to the built in sound maker so I can now use the alert (temp below 38F) feature and have it blink the red LED, but no more obnoxious beeping sound!

I still don't see how you remove the unit easily to adjust time/replace battery? Or do I have to remove pod cover and un-tape/unmount clock twice a year?
If I don't care about the clock can I just leave out the battery?

Hi guys, have a quick question. I really want to mount it like this

but, when I grabbed power from where the auto dimmer/compass rearview mirror plugs in at I found out that the temp gauge will have power all the time. Is there a way I still grab power somewhere up there and not have the gauge on all the time?
Thanks

Mounting Solution!!!

I attached a couple studs (screws). I couldn't find glue to work, so I drilled a couple holes in the pod, inserted scroews and painted the screw heads black. Then I fabricated a back and secured with wing nuts. Easy on. easy off to adjust time and replace batteries.

is the backlight supposed to on when the ignition is on with headlights on too.??? cos mine doesnt seem to come on when i engage the ignition or switch the headlights on!!! im attached to ground and accessory ports on the back! what am i doing wrong?
| DougG | 08-11-2005 02:33 PM |
If you hooked up the unit to the ground and the accessory wires, as labeled on the back of the clock you removed, the unit backlight will be on whenever the ignition switch is turned beyond its origin as well as the green batt led on the face of the unit. Have you verified that there is actually power being supplied to the thermometer? What happens when you pick a different mode that shows the volts? If you can't get volts or batt light to show up, you have no power. Recheck your connections.

This still sounds like you have the electrical connections done wrong, like some feedback loop through another circuit other than the ground. The four wires that go to the stock clock, in order, are Batt, Ground, LIG, and ACC. You should have the thermo connected to the Ground and ACC (+ to ACC, - to Gnd). If you are sure these are correct, then try to connect the thermo via the lighter plug (redo your wiring to it) to double check that the thermo is working properly.
Connected up the way I mention above, my thermo is on with the Batt light LED illuminated and the back light on as well, in every position of the ignition switch except off. The lighting switch does not affect the thermo at all. It can be in position off, mid, or third position. If your thermo is influenced by the headlight switch at all, you have chosen the wrong wires.

I was thinking the same thing. This would allow some up/down adjustment to help it fit in the dremel'd window better - mine sits just a little too low 'cause it's not square back there and it slides down when I tighten it.
My wife says "enough already". I had a sticker on my Wrangler that said "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand" Could the same be said for NASIOC?

Isn't there an OAT readout on the instrument panel? I used to have a MY02 Impreza TS (1.6L) and it had one below the fuel and water temp gauges. Same goes with my MY05 WRX. Am in Singapore and I think we get the UK spec cars.
But that's nice work! Sure looks better than that rather generic looking green clock from the factory.

You are the first to say this. I own two of these and can say with certainty that they are both within a degree of each other and surrounding temp. Perhaps you need to relocate your probe?
