Check the site out. Lots of pics from past years. The auto show will be a monster this year too and is in the works. Big grandstands for the Special stages. Motor home camping right there 300 feet away.

Should be fun. Hopefully they'll build a better special stage this year. Maybe this time without a jump that causes a large portion of the field to retire. I'm not a big fan of the side-by-side action either. I liked the old set-up in front of the Holiday Inn............those were the days.

Ok, first of all, you made the wrong turn before I even started reading the map, and second, think of all the nice scenery you would have missed had we gone the right way.
I haven't posted in a while cuz I don't get on here as much as I used to. Nice to see you're living back in SoCal though. I'm sure I'll see you at the rally this year.

so is there a place to tent out right there? I have been looking for a campground nearby to camp out but looking for a place with showers/etc. We just moved here from Maine so will be out first time at Rim as well.
Anyone tenting or camping nearby? Thats how we usually do it at Maine Forest, if we have to get a hotel no biggie, if there are any rooms still available anywhere. Anyone driving up from Phoenix area Friday AM? Could caravan up or something.

I don't believe there is any tent camping. There is a small grass area around but it is not set up for camping which means the sprinklers will be on when you least expect them. It's mostly open desert and pavement. Plenty of nearby inexpensive hotels/motels in the general area. Check the Rim website for addys. The closest is the Essex House which is also headquarters.

So, this year, there was ONE specator area (not counting the Special Stage) and they CANCELLED the stage, so there was no real spectating AT ALL.
Yeah, it was nice that they had the Auto-X, The Drift Thing and the Rice Show, but.....
If you want people to get interested in RALLY, you need to fix the damn spectating problem. I got to Rallies to WATCH RALLY, not to see riced out Civics.
Although, I suspect the Hockers and the rest of the CRS Mafia don't actually give a crap about whether people watch the rally or not. And don't even get me started on how many seasoned competitors who personally told me how much the whole event was a total cluster****.
Rim of The World used to be fun, and had great potential, but now it just blows.
I'm only going to WRC events from now on, at least they run on time and actively encourage spectators.

I had alot of fun @ Rim this year, ya not having any other rally viewing was a bit of a drag... but still i had alot of fun. The drifting expo was pretty awesome, and the super special was pretty good i thought. i liked the over-under bridge, and i got a sweet pic of Patric Richard going over the bridge, and the #99 car just coming out under the bridge.
All and all i had a great time at Rim of the world rally, there was plenty of stuff to do like check out the vendors inside one of the buildings, check out a great car show put up by the Gravel Crew, watch auto-x, drifting expo, and the super special. I just hope next year they have some areas to watch the cars go by like del sur. Btw i love all the free stuff i got

I'm not sure you can entirely blame the organizers. They were delt a pretty bad hand to begin with. It just wouldn't stop raining. The rally radio wasn't a bad deal but, man they had some awful taste in music. I wish I had remembered to bring ear plugs when I went the the fairgrounds. The squeeling of the tires on the autoX was better sounding...

Of course not, but having dealt with these organizers for the last 4 years, I can confidently put a lot of the blame on them.
This isn't the only Rally the same organizers have messed up.
The only way Rally is going to grow in the USA is by making it more spectator-friendly, not LESS spectator-friendly.

trust me when i say this " they did not want to cancell the spectator stages"... i know the people that put this event on and i know how much they want to see this sport grow in the US. the stage that was set up to be a spectator stage had an area where there was an enbankment on either side and it slid from both sides making the road impassable. yes this sucks, i love going out and running the roads on the way to the stages and watching them but it just wasnt posssible this year.
this race was almost canceled by the forest service this year but Paula put a ton of time and effort into this event so we could have it this year. if you have some comments on how you feel the event could have been made better send them an e-mail or something, if its just posted on here odds are they wont see it.
How did everybody like the SSS. the entire course was built by our team in 2 days. just wondering so we could get some feedback if we do it again next year.

Well correct me if I am wrong but, nobody actually makes any money doing this right ? As far as I know a ton of people worked their asses off trying to make it what they could. Until there is some bigger money envolved I'm not sure you can expect a WRC class event. The rallypass for Mexico was $75. The rally pass for the rim was $5. Guess you get what you pay for.
I liked the fact the drift and car show exposed people to rally that would have never run into it normally. I'm not a fan of all that stuff and the drift stuff I'm not even sure was a good demo of drift. Seemed like they just did whatever. Saw more donuts then drifts. Still biggest crowds of the event that I saw. The announcer doing the AutoX stuff cracked me up too.

www.gcrallyx.com
As a competitor, having to run it without the course being complete seemed like a waste of our time. The special stage has been planned and known for a considerable amount of time. Why wasn't it completed PRIOR to the event so that it could be used in it's entirety for ALL runs?
Perhaps instead of a tabletop, something with a more rounded top so that if a car hits it at higher speeds there is less of a chance of breaking the car.
That said, I heard from several people watching that it looked really good. :) Maybe a little less water in the water splashes would be better for the competitors. :) The course design wasn't too bad, fairly tight with a few more open sections. We liked it even though it was REALLY, REALLY slippery. :)

Don't forget the airline tickets, a week + off, hotel and the rest sport. I'd rather go to Cyprus Rally and take in Cannes and Barcelona myself but a few of us unwashed hoardes have to deal with bits reality on rare occasion. $5 is damn close to free.
As a competitor, having to run it without the course being complete seemed like a waste of our time. The special stage has been planned and known for a considerable amount of time. Why wasn't it completed PRIOR to the event so that it could be used in it's entirety for ALL runs?
I was told the ground was simply too wet to form into much of anything Friday. They tried and had to give up. The crews worked all night to get it together for Saturday after the ground had dried a bit.
Yes, the oval of Friday night was a waste of time. There were some fun jumps to see anyway. If they had just canceled people would probably be even less happy. Not sure I'd be a fan if I was driving. Just another chance to break something.
Saturday night was fun though. The zoom lens I was using doesn't zoom anymore after the mudbaths.

Has ROTW always been about vendors, autox, drifting, and waiting around for hours in a parking lot? As this was my first off-road rally experience, I was thinking it would have revolved around the actual cars being driven off-road. The thing that I was most confused by was how the "officials" didnt know what was going on.
In the end my 3 buddies and I hiked past the "he-she" guarding the entrance to the last stage on Saturday night, walked up the road and cheered all the cars coming up the hill.
Sorry if we scared any of you guys (Vermont Sport, ESX, Gravel Crew), but we love to watch you guys!!!
Next year, more breaking rules to physically watch rally.

That's actuallly the 'norm' in rally events. There is always someone telling you not to stand somewhere or go somewhere when your near the 'spectator area' but, walk up the road a bit and nobody cares if there is actually anyone even there. Walk far enough and it is just you and the cars. Of course, you get hit or hurt you're on your own too.

Except normally there are multiple stages with planned spectator areas so you can actually see cars on the stages. At least at the rallies that I've been too. Of course I've never paid $5 to watch a super special either, so maybe I'm just crazy.
