I won't be able to make it right at 11 since I have class that morning. I should make it to the fairground by 12noon.
Just noticed this portion of Gus' post. How about if we move the meet time to noon so we are all showing up at about the same time. That will still leave us with plenty of time to get everything done before dark.
Sound like a plan?

Yes, sounds like a great plan. I'll try to be there as early as possible with the truck and necessary equipments. I'll also need to leave around 3pm to go and pick up the t-shirts/trophies for the event.
Did I say Trophies??? Well, they're on SPECIAL ORDER :disco: overnighting it from Japan...Just kidding about the Japan part. I'm really hoping they'll come in on time so we can reward the great drivers. For those who do not win trophies, we got a RallyRPI/WurldMedia T-shirt for all competitors! :o In addition there will be alot more merchandise from Wurld Media. Later during the day we will be expecting a surprise from RedBull too, so hang on to your pants.
BTW, here's the recent updates. A few people are pending now, so we need to add more to the list! I'm hoping a dozen of people will be showing up to register on the spot.

Gus,
Again, many thanks for all your hard work with this. :D
I've populated the timing software with this last entry list. I've also printed out a sheet for registration so they can keep track of who pays. If there are any other changes we can take care of them on-site on Saturday.
BTW, car number for Philip Laukkanen?
Also, Andie Z. will be car number 172.
See you tomorrow!

I changed Andie's number. Philip will be #180.

I'm ready to go for tomorrow. I was shooting for 11:00 but I see that noon is the meet time now. I made my run to Scotia to pick up several stacks of cones from A.M.E.C.'s trailer. I'll spend the extra hour marking all of our cones so they won't get mixed up with RPI's.
Gus, don't forget those loaner helmets, I've had quite a few asking about them.
I'd suggest we all take a look at the list of equipment each of us is bringing and make a checklist before we leave early on Sat morning. :)

Wow. Let me be the first of many to post congrats to everybody that helped put the Rally RPI RallyX together. Well done! You guys are going to be running a winter event, correct?
I'm going to have to work on getting more LGT folks out to events...
Oh, and if anybody found a couple of CDs, maps and some assorted papers near the fence across from the tables, send me a PM. New cars have way too many places to store ****.

Gus, I hope you partied well last night because that was one hell of an event!   The course layout was awesome and it was more like a party in the dirt than the typical RallyX. One thing that I thought was very cool was anytime we needed help with something I could ask any random person that was in reach of me and they would just jump on it. Awesome event and an awesome group of folks. Can't wait to come back for more. :D
Some of you may have noticed I came to a stop on my last run on the back end of the course (car #72, black STi with the graphics). I came around a right hander and thought I heard my rear diff chewing itself apart. Took it easy for the rest of the run as I was afraid I killed it.
Tim C. (#66) was following me out and I made it about a 1/2 mile before the sound came back. Turned out to just be some rocks in both rear brakes. We pulled over, pulled the wheels, did a bit of surgery, and I was back on the road in no time. Made it back to Manchester, NH in less than 3 hours so I would say its fine. ;)
I also want to give one final reminder for everyone to sign up for Wurld Media. They were an awesome sponsor!

Seems like too many people went on the site to check results and perhaps download it, now it's down at 7pm EST. It should open up again in the next hour, but I'll see if we can host it in another location so we don't overrun the bandwidth.
Gus
p.s. I'm glad everyone enjoyed the show :P But hold on a minute, there's more surprise to come so stay tuned. Also, we have eluded to the rallyx in the winter time (1st week of December). There should be snow on the ground so it will aid in cleanup time and allow us to have more drifting fun.
p.s.s I'm working on a e-mail list for all those who're interested in staying in touch with Rallyx news. In addition, a new website will be built to allocate more space.

I'll throw a copy up on my site tonight and post the URL.
As for the Dec. event, any chance of doing it the second weekend? The first weekend is the last NER RallyX points event.
E-mail list sounds awesome. :)

Gus,
No apologies necessary. It's impressive that the results are already up. Would I be correct in assuming that it was you who spent hours typing all of that up?
I'd like to thank all of the people that made this event an overwhelming success.
It was truly a team effort starting with a small but determined group of college students with a passion for rally and the desire to make this happen, coupled with the support of some of the most experienced people from the northeast rally and rallycross community.
I am proud to have been one of the supporting cast of contributors, but from my perspective, we all owe a great deal of gratitude to the key players like Gus Lin, Chris Brenton, and Ivan and Olga Orisek for their major contributions to make it all work and work well.
That is not to overshadow everyone else who contributed or lent a hand however. After the event when we had to rake up the course and fill in the ruts with shovels and rakes, there was virtually no one who did not go out and pitch in. Very impressive indeed.

Mike!
If I had the time to type up all those scoring details in the excel I would, but it was conveniently provided by Chris Brenton! I only did a bit of photoshop to copy/paste that :o
BTW, that's me in the Yellow Subie WRX! It was my first time driving an AWD, and boy am I glad it wasn't just any AWD. I think my Evo vs Subaru scale just tipped a bit toward Subaru's (just a bit  ).
I'm collecting the media from a group of very helpful individuals and I will be able to share them as soon as I get 'em. I'm glad you'll be helping us out with the press release and I can't wait for them to be done. I'll like to share them with the local press when you're finished.
I'll give you guys an update on new website, e-mail list, and upcoming event as soon as we have our team meeting on tuesday.
BTW, don't miss out on Ivan's Rally New York International at the last weekend of the month of September. I bet I'll see most of you there at Monticello NY.

No apologies necessary. It's impressive that the results are already up. Would I be correct in assuming that it was you who spent hours typing all of that up?

I have been asked to contribute to putting together a press release for the event and I am in need of some high quality action pictures. Additionally, any pics with the Red Bull vehicles [or girls :D ] clearly in them or ones that have views of the Wurld Media representative, etc. Please email them to me at [emailprotected] or send a link to them if they are already in an online album.
Thanks,

Man, that was the most fun I've legally had in my STi! It was very well organized, and the competitors were really cool. I definitely want to do this again sometime.
My friend Andy G. took about an hour's worth of video and 2 rolls of film. We're working on getting the film developed & chopping up the video.
In the meantime, here's a funny pair of pictures. A good mechanic knows how to use the wrong tool for the right job. It is on that note that I present to you: the German-made, gas-powered, mobile tire bead-breaking machine.

Mmmm, giant rally course in the snow/ice...
There were a lot of dSLRs w/good-sized telephoto lenses attached at the rallycross. I'm betting that there are going to be some really phenomenal photos of the event. Bunch of videocams as well! The makings of a great PR kit for Rally RPI.

Red Bull girls brought out the Pinzgauer/Puch (i think) which was blasting music, which made the rallyX more of a party than any other event I've been to.

All the images are in my photoblog (click) starting at the 5th row. I'll keep adding 'em as they get developed & scanned. It might be another day or two before we're done.
These images are 150dpi scans. If anyone wants an even higher-resolution version (for posters or what not) PM me. I think we can do scans up to 600dpi, which would be roughly 100MB per image .
EDIT: OK, first roll of film has been scanned. The second roll will be probably be done on Wednesday. Here are the details about the camera shots:
If anyone cares, they were taken with a Nikon FM2n, MD-11 motor drive, 35-200mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom Nikkor OR 100-300mm f/5.6 zoom Nikkor. 1/500 shutter speed, f/5.6 OR 8. Kodak Gold 400 film, developed by WalMart (ugh). Scanned on a Microtek ScanMaker 6000 @ 600dpi, imported into Photoshop, re-sized to 150dpi and then jpeg'd @ a quality setting of 10

I ran my un-studded Kumho IZen tires there the two times I competed. Didn't have nearly the grip of the DOT studded tires, but enough to get me safely around.
Actually, those are the same tires I ran on Sat. The things are like 3 years old now and have been through two rallyX's and two ice races, in addition to doing winter duty for three years, and still have a ton of tread. Must be as hard as a rock!

Thanks everyone for coming out to our event it was a huge success. I have pictures from my camera from it which I have burned on a CD and need to ship off to Gus so he can get them on the website.
My tires are completely shot now after the drive home. Most people saw that they were almost completely flat during the event and now the steel treads are sticking out :) Oh well I just ordered my new ones
I'm thinking about running Nokian WR or Blizzak LM-22 as my winter tire...would that work? (/threadjack)
I ran the WR's last year in Buffum's winter rally as well as through the BMW ice racing season in NH. Its a great compromise tire. Very sticky on glare ice. Its only real weakness is deep slush or snow. Much better on dry tarmac than most winter tires. I even used them for RallyX for the first half of the season.
Can't comment on the LM-22's as I have not run them. Thinking I'm going to try the WS-50's this season. Bit more rounded of a snow tire than the WR's. The tread pattern is also more aggressive which will make it better for RallyX come Spring.
HTH,
Chris

Thanks Chris, I really appreciate the compliment. This was my second rallyX, but I've been doing a lot of practicing with driving sims. I think I could have done a little better if I weren't tip-toeing through the turns to try to minimize the beating on my car. And I got around the shifting issues by probing the limits of the rev limiter in first :D
I definitely hope to do a lot more of this in the future when time/money allows, hopefully even taking it a step up to some proper rallying in the next few years.

Anyways, I gathered a number of pics from my friends who were spectating/riding, Philip (driving the Jetta), and my own camera. They can be viewed at:

If anyone wants full rez pics, feel free to PM me or drop me an email. Also, whoever is maintaining the site with the results should feel free to link to my gallery as well.
Anyone know where i could grab some cheap used 16" steelies for my 2.5RS, or maybe get a good deal on a rim/snow combo?
Also, how do you guys go about practicing for events like these? ;)

This is the first time NER has run at Addison. The description from the event organizer is:
The BurlingtonCars.com RallyCross will be held Saturday September 17th. The venue is the Addison Fairgrounds in New Haven, Vermont. While this is event number nine of the New England RallyCross Championship, membership in SCCA is not required to partake in the off-road fun. The course will be set in a grass field used for parking for the fair and will be longer than typical in length. On site camping is permitted for $15 per night with electric and water hookups.
There is no immediate fast food available, so I suggest packing a lunch and fluids.
Entry form, directions can be found at http://www.ner.org/Rally/rallyx/05/05addison.htm

Hey Everyone,
There are 4 media links posted on our Rally_Cross homepage. I think there are over a Gig of photos and also vids of Chris' car doing some rea cooll rally drifts!
We're also negotiating with Washington County Fairground the possibility of hosting one more in December! The preliminary date is December 10th (saturday) or 11th (sunday). As soon as we get a go on this one I'll announce it officially.

Hey man, if you have a decent gaming PC and wheel, order an import copy of Richard Burns Rally. It has a lot of exercises in gravel and tarmac that show you the proper way through turns, using the handbrake, left-foot-braking, etc. etc. Really, really good sim.
Also, how do you guys go about practicing for events like these? ;)
By going to more events like these. I like circular answers!
But seriously, if you aren't at a formal event and you think you are practicing, you aren't learning anything and it's probably dangerous.

Speaking about going in circles, here is an excellent rallycross course that crosses over itself and makes a nice course out of a relatively small amount of land. I'd love to be able to maintain a bit higher average speed during a rallycross. How do you guys like the course in this video clip ?

More "damage"

The rallyX last weekend screwed up my compass in my rearview mirror.
It now always says South , even when I'm going North.
I guess after reading the boards here, I'm not the first person to have this happen to after driving in the twisties.
I guess I'll have to reset it tonite.

I've heard that if you drive around in circles in a large parking lot or something with open space, it will reset it for you?
