So you want to race F1, eh? Join me at Batracer.com!!

EDIT: (7/27/06) The first NASIOC private game is full. You can, of course, sign into a public game (or two or three or whatever) and start learning how to play the game. I imagine when this NASIOC private game is done (in about 5 weeks) someone will start another.
I recently was introduced thru another automotive forum to an online racing site called Batracer - http://batracer.com/-uH . I've been playing for a bit over a week and it's pretty damn fun and addictive. I'm starting a "private" game racing the 2006 F1 season, so I'm looking for 21 people to join me to fill the field.
So what is Batracer? It's not a live action racing game, it's strictly setup and strategy stuff. The "quickstart guide" is here. Long story short, you've got 12 parameters (wings, roll bars, tire pressures, etc) that can be varied from 0 to 100. At each track you get a certain number of runs to dial in your setup (you and your teammate can share info to help the dialing in process - more on that in a bit). There's 24hr of practice time (so people around the world can log in and do their thing), but you only get that set number of runs. The site then calculates qualifying results. After qualifying you get some more warm-up runs (again with a 24hr time window) to further dial in your setup, and then the site calculates the race results. The race happens (is calculated) instantaneously, but once it's calculated you can go through lap-by-lap and see how things progressed. You choose your pit strategy, you choose which tires you're going to run, you choose your driving style, etc etc. Just like in real racing, sometimes **** happens and your car fails or someone takes you out in a bad passing attempt, whatever.
It's free to play. However, if you donate ~$20 to the site you get to use Kool Tools, which make it substantially easier for you and your teammate to share setup (his setup is automatically displayed below yours as you adjust your 12 tuning parameters, so between the two of you it's easier to narrow things down). It'll take a bit over five weeks to go through the full season once I start the game - it's basically 2 days at each track so you do the math. :)
I have no affiliation with the site, like I said I was just introduced to it last week. I'm in one private game (in a McLaren) and one public game (in a Super Aguri - everything else was already full :( ) right now and figured I'd start up a private game here and spread the love.
The first 21 people to PM me will be in. I'll give it a few days, if I don't have 21 other players within a couple/few days I'll go ahead and start the game without a full field (the other private game I'm in now has just 8 teams and it's still fun). Needless to say, the sooner you sign up the better your team will be - the good ones will fill up fast! I'm already logged into Scuderia Ferrari. :) Once I get your PM I'll send you a sign up link with a password so you can join the private game.

PS - Note that there are other racing series to play in, I just went with F1 2006 because it's current and I haven't tried the Aussie Super Cars game yet (it takes about 7 weeks for the full season).

I want just Honda please!!! I have Toyota in another season. That is a great site. Thanks for the heads up.
Also, In the season I just start in I have Super Aguri. I'm 14th after practice. Not bad I think considering I've never done this before and Aguri blows. Qualifying is tonight. I will let you guys know how it goes.

I just PM'd 4 of you, so that'll get us up to 6 players. Still more needed!
AshyLarry, when you get to the Car Tuning page, up in the upper right is a link to Engineer's Advice. That'll at least give you some idea of where to start. So, let's say he tells you to run medium downforce. I'll make an educated guess for my first run, say front wing = 55 and rear wing = 53. I do my first test run and it comes back with a "Recommend decrease?" for the front and a "Recommend increase?" for the rear. So I'll bump them each about 15 points or so and usually that's a large enough jump to allow me to bracket the "spot on" number. From there I normally just use the "half split" method - if I've got it bracketed somewhere between 40 and 55, then I'll try 47, which should tell me if it's between 40-47 or 47-55, and then split it in half again, etc etc. Of course you don't always get feedback on what you've tried - it might take a couple runs. That (I believe) depends on your experimentation setting at the top of the Car Setup sliders.

Took your advice, was very helpful, still kinda slow but I'm starting to see how everything works. I just wish there was more than 8 runs!
| Patrick Olsen | 07-26-2006 08:39 AM |
That's where team work comes into play - if you get Kool Tools you can see his setup, so you have twice the data with which to dial in your setup. Also, after the qualifying, there'll be warm-up runs where you can further dial in your setup.

Kool Tools is really helpful in setup when you don't live with your teammate. I live with my brother so I just went to him with my laptop and we compared notes. Team work really makes a difference in the development of the setup. Make sure you guys work together.
| AshyLarry | 07-26-2006 09:06 AM |
My teammate is going to join later today but for my other game he's from Italy and I haven't been able to talk to him. We'll see how things go, no matter what it is definetly entertaining.

Whichever one of you is Bob Stevens, I think I have a chance at a podium, so I'm gonna go ahead and push for it.
MattDell, you're my rival.
EDIT: Can I join another team? I took away the spot from AshyLarry's friend on accident.

That's fine with me, I just want to fill out the field as much as possible.
And as I said in my original post, I've only been doing this a bit over a week, so I have a bit of a head start on the rest of you guys when it comes to figuring out how to play, but not that much. Someone's already got 4 games going, so he's getting more experience than I've got.

I didn't even set parameters on the Midland.

I just sent PMs to 2 more people (and advised them both they were the last to sign up, so they'd be in the Super Aguris  ). Once I see that 22 are signed up then I'll start the game. That'll probably be late tonight, which'll work out pretty well. The game will be on a 24hr cycle, so when people get home from work/school they can do their practice/warm-up laps, and then at some point in the evening the qualifying/race will be calculated. Each time the game advances you'll get an email informing you of that, so you can go check out how the quali/race went and then either do your warm-up laps (between the quali and race) or start working on your setup for the next track with your practice laps.

Start it around 8pm if you can. That would be the perfect time for me.
| Patrick Olsen | 07-26-2006 06:16 PM |
The game started itself when the 22nd person signed up, and it started a 12hr count-down to qualifying. I can manually advance it, which I plan to do later tonight once the Super Aguri boys have had a chance to do some practice runs. Once I jump start it (so qualifying will be at some point tonight) then I'll just leave it to cycle through every 24hr.
