Speed Channel

I wanted to experss my frustration with Speed Channel, formerly known as Speedvision.
Now, I have appreciation for mainstream racing (NASCAR I guess would be the best example) but don't really follow it. I'm really a grassroots racing kinda guy - I enjoy autocrossing. I follow the FIA World Rally, Speed GT, BTCC, etc etc. Well, Speed Channel is the only channel which really broadcasts these events, so I paid the entire $9.95/month for this channel.
All I see is NASCAR NASCAR NASCAR. I had respect for this sport, but now I'm beginning to hate it. The channel is absolutely dominated by NASCAR and it makes me sick. I remember when Speed Channel was Speedvision years ago, and they showed little or no NASCAR.
I'm just a little dissapointed I guess that's all...

Yeah, the new channel sucks compared to the way it was. I'm afraid the only way it's going to get better is if another speedvision type channel is formed. I'd pay $10 a month for it and drop speed channel in a heartbeat. Speaking of which- LSPR coverage was supposed to be on this afternoon at 4:00, but when I sit down to watch it all I see is psuedo trucks following each other around in a circle. Friggin burns me.

I second that. My sentiments exactly. It is a shame.
| WilmoWRX | 11-13-2004 08:35 PM |
Yeah, i feel the same way. I only have Speed channel to watch the FIA world rally, nopi tunervision and some other show were they trick out some imports. Other than that, speed is worthless.
| Johnny Knoxville | 11-13-2004 08:50 PM |
you pay 10 bucks a month for it? damn...its included in my basic cable package. and yes...they do show a boatload of nascrap on there...which is understandable since its popularity ranks up there with the other major sports.
| Tkacik | 11-13-2004 08:52 PM |
Yeah, since I got Dish Network last week, I have been pretty dissapointed with Speed's lack of non-NASCAR programming. At least WRC's on tomorrow... :)

I few years ago wasn't Speedvision/channel just about 100% motorcycle racing? I remember everytime I went to get a part for my bike, the shop had Speedvision on and there was always a bike race. All that Nascar crap used to be on FOX for a while. I don't get why they take a week to go over a 2 hour race.

Its not as bad as you guys make it to be....I enjoy watching the following on speed:
Autoweek
Motorweek
Fifth Gear
FIA WRC
On weekends they usually show SCCA races which are always fun to watch.
Once in a blue moon they show some Japanese racing.
Tuner Transformation is good for a laugh
Test Drive is fun to watch also, depending on the car that is being reviewed.

| Rallycarperson | 11-13-2004 09:49 PM |
Yeah, I get Speed for free.
I make bets with myself on what is goin to be on when I turn the TV on. 8/10 times its NASCAR related. Either damn Trackside, some old 1998 Darlington race, some old Southern hick explaning 'wedge', or Speed News NASCAR edition. :furious:

Jesus, is this anyone who actually LIKES the channel?? I mean, aren't we the target audience for Speed Channel? And in this sample almost everyone isnt happy with the channel.
This is absolutely ridiculous and makes little sense
And as far as NASCAR goes, FOX has FX to show it on. NBC has PAX. Why the hell do they need Speed?

In case anyone from FOX reads these boards I want to voice my disgust for all the NASCAR programs on Speed. What a shame Speedvision was purchased by FOX. In the beginning FOX "promised" that Speed channel would not turn into the "NASCAR" channel. Imagine if FOX didn't promise. What really burns me is the hours and hours of post NASCAR Race bull**** about this cars oil leak or if that car should have been black flagged or etc etc. Ugh. At least Speed covers F1, and WRC and MotoGP. I would love it if they would have in depth interviews with F1 engineers, WRC drivers and MotoGP riders. But that probably wont happen.

No, the target clearly changed a couple years ago to NASCAR fans. Unless you live under a rock you know NASCAR is hugely more popular in the US than F1, WRC... so you can't fault them for going after that group. No one else would pay Bernie the big $$$ to get all the F1 races, so that's good enough for me.
There is still plenty of good programing on Speed, just not during prime time. Get a Tivo. :)

Yup......very sad about all the NASCAR coverage. I have no interest in it at all. Has anyone else noticed that there hasn't been a new episode of My Classic Car with Dennis Gage in about five years!!! How can they show the same ones over and over again? Hmmmmmm.... Speedvision seemed to be so much better and diverse.

I would bet if it were followed to the source(Speed Channel owners, FOX Broadcasting), one could probably imagine where all the NAS-CRAP comes from.
| abaxter34 | 11-14-2004 06:42 PM |
speedvision kicked ass, speed channel sucks. why didnt fox just start a station dedcicated only to nascar. in general i dispise all circle track but i can find a way to respect irl drivers way more than nascar. i get speed channel for free but i would definately pay extra if i got a channel garranteed to be circle track free.
| FaastLegacy | 11-14-2004 07:01 PM |
Speed channel has gotten so bad about NASCAR that they actually have NASCAR reality shows. There's one called BGN 24/7 or something where they follow drivers off the track. Pretty gay.
Back in the good ole days they had all types of cool stuff on cars, boats and even planes. Now 23 hours a day are dominated by some iteration of NASCAR. Ick.

back, mabye 2 years ago, when it was speedvision it was good. But then they changed their name, and gradually moved to "NASCAR 24/7". 9/10 times when I turn it on, nascar is all I see, and the 10th time, it's motorcycle racing.
Hopefully sometime in the near future, they'll start showing WRC and clubrally events more. I say this because of my recent realization that WRC is getting to be mainstream america. Dont believe me? go to k-mart and look at the model cars. I'll bet you can find a WRC-style evo or STi. So hopefully, NASCAR is in it's dying days (although it'll probably never go away).

What's so great about NASCAR anyway? Drive fast, turn left. Big deal. I didn't care much for racing until I saw a rally race just recently. Fast little cars on horrid roads, rain or shine! That's so much more interesting!
I patiently await the little WRC coverage they have scheduled . . .
I learned about WRC through my boyfriend, who got all excited when I told him I wanted to buy an Impreza (even though I didn't opt for the WRX). And he's right, it's really, really cool to watch these cars drive at crazy speeds all over the place. NASCAR is pretty boring by comparison. If WRC can get to me, a chick with no previous racing interest, then I think there's a lot of people who would dig it once they are introducted to it.
I wish the Speed channel would recognize that . . .

You guys really need to check out their website and look at the programming schedule. They have a lot of good stuff on, in between the go fast, go left sutff.
And they have every single F1 race, practice and qualifying, 18 races this year. That's not insignificant.

I heard the reason nascar is so exciting is because people mainly go to see people crash. Plus the sport is made to be a spectator sport. It's a spectator sport because it is a circle and they can put stands all the way around it. I think its the gayest thing in the world. I want to see more F1, WRC, and motorcycle racing!

Everyone,
I understand your frustration with SpeedTV. But they will listen to viewer feedback!
There was recently a whole lot of people that were dissappointed with SpeedTV's Grand-Am Cup coverage. Grand-Am Cup is a 3 hour endurance race format, but SpeedTV was cramming the race into just one hour. It made for very broken coverage that was hard to follow. Lot's of people wrote in to SpeedTV's comments link regarding this, requesting that the Grand-Am Cup races be broadcast in full.
Well, SpeedTV increased the broadcast length from one hour to two hours. The coverage flows much better and is a much more enjoyable race to watch. And they selectively cut out the mundane stuff, so the race coverage is fairly action packed. Nice job!
I suggest you pool your resources and write constructive messages to SpeedTV for the same programming. You are not going to make NASCAR go away, so don't try. But you can make a case for particular programming you are interested in.
Good luck!

Ratings talk, message board carping walks. Has anyone looked at the ratings for F1? They are miniscule. ESPN, for example, draws more viewers by accident to programs, than actually tune in to F1 races. WRC is only marginally better.
NASCAR, on the other hand, draws the advertising and viewers that pay the bills that allow Speed Channel to broadcast the vast array of motorsports programming that they do. Where else are you going to see 8/10ths of the 24 Hours of LeMans? Where else are you going to see WRC (in France, btw, they only get a 40-minute highlight show, not 90 minutes as we do here). Then there's Fifth Gear, ALMS, Moto (Superbikes and GP).
Every few months or so, a thread such as this one pops up. But all I can say is visit the Speed Channel web site, and check the program schedule. There's some good stuff on that channel.

My complaint is that Speed's guide info (on Directv) isn't what they are showing. Multiple times I've tried to tune into Autoline Detroit, Autoweek, Test Drive, etc. to find NASCAR Live. I've complained multiple times on Speed's forum but have had my posts deleted every single time.

The guide listings I get on my digital cable box are pretty much always correct unless a live event has run long. Might be a Direct TV issue.
And like other people have said there's a good deal of non-nascar stuff on speed, but there isn't enough demand for this stuff to have its own channel.

This is true. When I had DirecTV, it was unreliable in that regard. But so is my current cable provider, who must get the same data download. Much more reliable by far is my ReplayTV service (yes Replay, NOT TiVO...I have an aversion to cutesy icons). Even when the cable guide says "TBA," Replay tells me what's on.

Bitching about NASCAR isn't going to make it go away. Lot's of people like it. We don't. We are the minority. It will be here long after we are tired of bitching about it.
By the way, I really don't like NASCAR very much (except when they are on a road course). BUT, I must say, I have a newfound respect for what they do. The Lexus 250 Grand-Am Cup race was my first exposure to an oval, and it is hairy stuff! The whole time I was going through NASCAR 1 & 2 I was thinking, man, that would REALLY hurt if I lost control and hit that wall. First time in a LONG time I've been concerned about my health during a race.

Man, isn't that the truth. The first time I let the car drift up the banking after coming off the infield, shifting through the gears... that transition to fifth gear makes you hold your breath as the weight shifts to the front and the back end steps a few inches closer to that big white wall. You know that the slightest indiscretion with the steering could lead to a big oops.
No, I respect them very much as racers, no doubt. But I don't need hours of pit stop analysis.
Speed Channel COULD do so much for motorsports: imagine a show that travelled around the country showing the most basic of grassroots motorsports: karting, autocross, specMiata.... give me a camera crew, a truck and two 30 minute slots a week and I'd create a new reality series: The Girl Next Door Goes Racing.
A few clips of races, and a few minutes of grassroots news. Get the 8 year old karters on TV!!

Have to agree that speed channel has become nascar channel. You have to pick the right times to watch (few and far between) to catch something non-nascar related. But that is where the money is. I'll take what I can get since I don't pay extra for speed channel, but more wrc coverage would be great.

I've heard it said on these boards that we get better rally coverage than the rest of the world. With a TiVo I pretty much never miss Grand-Am, World Challenge, or WRC.
Tuner Transformation gets a bad rap IMHO.. they have done a really nice job overall with a lot of the car's theyve had. Couple screwups, but the Miata, STi, and others have turned out well.

I just upgraded my DISH TV package just to add your channel, but I have been very dissapointment with the content and am considering cancelling my subscription. The programming is dominated by NASCAR, especially during the weekdays, and little attention is given to other race series. There are millions of people out there interested in the WRC, Grand Am, World Challenge, and similar forms of racing other than NASCAR. I urge you to please devote more time to these racing series.

I get rally coverage very day during an WRC event (several times a day, on two channels - local public service channel (aw, the government is using tax payers money for something good :D) and Eurosport).
One thing though, I really wish I could see Canadian/American rallying over here. There's none what so ever.
Hmm, british BBC I think, have a website that shows all the British National Rally Championship events in great format streamed..
nascar pays the bills on speed. without it there might be no speed channel at all.
Speedvision seemed to do quite well without NASCAR.
As for paying the bills?? For YEARS I paid $10 every month just to get Speedvision. It's highly unlikely I would pay more than a dime for it today. Speed does still show most of the auto motorsports series that I like (WRC, LeMans, ALMS, F1, etc), but they no longer show most of the cool non-auto speed stuff. Anyone else remember (oh gawd, I'm getting old!!) when they used to show the airplane racing?
And as for the "where else could you see 8/10 of the 24 Hours??" Before Speedvision became Speed Channel (aka Nascar Channel), they used to play 10/10. The 2/10 that the new Speed cuts out is IMO the best 2/10 of the race! The wee hours of the French morning (i.e. primetime here) when some of the coolest stuff is happening gets cut to replay some minor-league NASCAR series race. Boo!!!

I whole heartedly agree with all of you. I hate the way SpeedChannel programming is set up.
So, do what I did, go to the website and e-mail a complaint, and keep doing it until you get a response.

Oh boy...yet another "I hate Speed because of all the NASCAR".
Think of it on the bright side. If there was no Speed, where would we see WRC, Speed Touring/GT, Grand Am, F1, etc.? Sure, there's too much NASCAR, but that's where to majority of the viewership is.

 Speedvision was holding on by a thread prior to FOX. They could barely afford to get things like F1 and WRC coverage, more than one F1 season started without Speed onboard, then they'd start covering from the second race. And while you may remember some of their filler programming and tons of infomercials with nostalgia, I found it to be as boring as the NASCAR coverage.
I'm hoping they will have seen the peak in NASCAR and that they start to up the other programming.

I myself am a diehard NASCAR fan, and watch the sport on a regular basis, although I usually end up taping the races, as I work on Sundays. I also watch speedchannel because of this fact and beg to differ from what many of you have stated. NASCAR does not dominate they're coverage, in fact that is hardly the case. They may have the tendenancy to occasionally show reruns of NBS 24/7 and a few select other shows a bit much, and that is definitely an issue they should work out. Another problem I see is a lot of you seem to like F1 and Rally racing, ect..., which usually takes place outside of our time zones, events which are televised live around 1am in the morning, something that can't be changed.

[rant] all you clueless little pukes don't have a clue. I remember when their was no Speedtv. Thanks to Speed, we get regualr and repeat programming of F1, WRC, SccaPR, AMA, WSBK, MotoGP and much more. Thanks to Nascar for paying the bills and keeping speedtv in business., W/o it, you al would be just reading about it[/rant]

No but really 23/24 hours a day of Speed Channel is now NASCAR, I'd call that domination. There's Nextel races, truck races, BGN races, then there's Wind Tunnel, NASCAR reality shows, NASCAR talk shows, NASCAR news casts and so on and so forth. It's ridiculous that an entire channel has pretty much been devoted to one sanctioning body. Hence, NASCAR has effectively ruined Speed. Who really enjoys a reality show where they follow Billy Joe Bob around bumfock North Carolina? Or who enjoys watching Cletus and Bubba argue on some talk show about who has the quickest car?
Oh sure, there's always WRC and F1 on Sunday nights, and they alternate their timeslot a whole one time a week. And the odd ALMS race or Sportbike race....

Only NASCAR reality show they have is NASCAR drivers 360, which runs on FX, which follows the drivers, currently in rerun until next season. Also I would say its more 6-10 hours out of the 24 hour days that is alotted to NASCAR programming, hardly domination. Wind Tunnel is filled with drivers from all series, and is an interactive show allowing people to call and write in. Speed does cover the truck races, and shows reruns of the weeks races, which for those who don't own a vcr is a good thing. Only thing to nitpick on is them reruning NASCAR 24/7 and NBS 24/7 a bit too much. Heck we might as well complain about Fox being dominated by comedy while we're at this, you'd get the same results as seen in this thread.
