Will you guys have to get the +44 offset ones?? That may just stick out TOO far.

I don't think 44 offset 8" wheels will fit right. Especially with Tein HAs

Yeah, +44 would be about right for 8.5 widths.

the TE37 is offered in 46 offset for that width which is a little better

Rolling the fenders is a necessity, right? Does the CE-28n come in a steel grey/gunmetal color? I know that would be a custom color, but sleepy said 'any color'. I'd be very interested in that.
The 8" wheel with a 44mm offset will be 1/2" closer to the strut than stock. I'd rather roll the fenders than have any rubbing on the strut/springs, ya nah mean. You people have more experience with this than I, but is 2mm really going to make a difference?
I'm debating on trying to be competitive with these or getting the 18" prodrive gc-07 that Luke just put on sale for $399. I LOVE those wheels. Are there any competitive cars with 18" wheels and 225 tires? probably not.

Sadly, we are going to have to try the various combinations of struts, wheels, offset, and tires to see what really fits. I gave my data point and I seem to be able to get away with 245s on my 50 offset SSRs with Tein RA struts. I did raise it about 5mm from the recommended height and now I don't rub at all on the inside wheel well. I have maybe 5-7mm room in the rear clearing the coilover. I haven't checked the front but it doesn't seem to be rubbing. If I pushed the tires outward I would be risking hitting the fender which I don't feel like rolling because AUTOwrXER made it sound difficult.
But, because it works for me does not mean it will work for others if they have different coilovers, tires, etc.
Good luck and please post your data. A good thing to start with is the clearance you have from your coilovers and tires now. Post your tire width, wheel offset, coilover type, camber. From there you should be able to figure out what may fit.

I think ET44 is about as high as I would want to go. IMO, the further I can push the wheels out the better, so long as I don't rub the fender. Right now my street setup is OZ Superleggeras, 18x8, ET51. The wheels and tires sit very far under the car. The clearance is very, very close to the strut in the front and the rear (this is with Tein Flex at just about the recommended ride height). In fact, I get a little rubbing on the strut at full lock in the front. The back does not rub at all. The tires are Toyo Proxes T1s in 245/35/18 (damn close to stock diameter), and IMO the wider STX rubber (i.e. Kuhmo MX, BFG KD) would rub on the strut. I need to do my calculations on the overall width of the STX rubber vs. my Toyos and determine offset, but IMO ET44 is as high as we should be considering. The added bonus is that the further out you can fit the tires, the wider your track (which leads to better weight transfer characteristics, etc.). Of course, this is implying that you don't go so far that you screw up suspension geometry.
FWIW, I know of someone who stuck ET35 wheels on their scooby with no problems. The wheels were all the way to the edges of the wheelwell, but it didn't scrub. That was with stock suspension though...

I am using a Michilen pilot sport, 235/40/17, which is also very close to stock tire diameter.
They are mounted on standard Rota sub-zero's +48mm offset. No problems with clearance with the stock suspension and also with my DMS 50's (MRT C/C plates in front, STI tophats in rear). I can run any ride height I want and not worry about any rubbing.
The fit is good enough so that I might venture to say that my setup would work on a wagon too.

The specs - long

OK hold on for the wave of numbers I'm about to throw out there. Please don't cross post this with anything in the Tech forum or I will be overwhelmed with dumb questions.
A couple disclaimers before we get started. 1) My information is only as good as the source. In this case I used Toyo's website and Tire Rack, which only give measurements to the nearest .1". 2) All tire measurements were done on an 8.5" wheel, which in this case _should_ give us an extra margin of safety as the widths should be wider than the same tire on an 8" wheel (though the overall diameter _may_ be a bit shorter).
My current street setup is OZ Superleggeras, 18x8", ET51. I use Toyo Proxes T1s in 245/35/18. Here are the tire specs from their site:
Overall diameter = 24.8"
Overall (section) width = 9.6"
The tires are too close to the strut for me to measure any clearance. I definitely don't want the tires any closer to the strut, so I will assume this value to be 0.0". I did a quick measurement (in the rain, mind you) of the distance from the widest part of the tire to the edge of my fender, and this clearance is about 2cm (20mm). This is true for both the front and rear of my car. Please keep in mind that I have rolled my rear fenders. I am running 2.25 degrees of camber in the front, 1.5 degrees in the rear. The car is close to the reccomended ride height on Tein Flex coilovers (I started at the recommended height and adjusted slightly while cornerweighting). As I mentioned previously, I have no rubbing in the rear and a slight rub on the damper in the front at full lock. This is with just me in the car. I don't drive agressively with others in the car, so I can't say if there would be more rubbing with this setup while driving in anger at max payload
The BFG KDs have the following specs:
Overall diameter = 24.7" (very nice, if I do say so myself)
Overall (section) width = 9.8"
The Kuhmo MXs have the following specs:
Overall diameter = 24.8" (very nice, if I do say so myself)
Overall (section) width = 9.9"
I can't find any info on weight (:( ), but that's not relevant to the fitment issue anyway. I am still undecided as to which tire I will run, so I'm sizing for the Kuhmo as it will be slightly harder to fit (a tad taller and a tad wider).
Basically, the extra width of the Kuhmo over my Toyos is .15" on either side (.3" total) or 3.81mm. I would need about a ET47 wheel (also 8" wide) to maintain the same inside clearance that I have now. As I said before, I can't go any closer to the strut without rubbing, but I do have 20mm to play with on the outside. With the wider Kuhmo tire fitted, the clearance to my fender drops to 16mm (due to the extra section width). Basically, this means that If I wanted to go all the way out to the fender with the tires I could go with an offset 16mm less than current, or ET35.
Going wider will increase the track of the car in the front and rear, thereby improving weight transfer characteristics under cornering load. I would like to push the wheels out as much as possible, but I won't go to the extreme of ET35 for two reasons. 1) If I run any less camber, I will lose clearance toward the fender. 2) Camber characteristics under load (as opposed to the staitic measurements I gave above) change depending on suspension geometry and flex. Most cars gain camber as the wheel moves up and lose camber as the wheel moves down (this is a good thing). Also, flex from squishy bushings will cause the outside tire to lose camber (a bad thing). Because I do not know the magnitude of these two factors for our cars, I am allowing some extra space toward the fender.
What this all amounts to (for me) is that the Volks at 17x8", ET44 give me an additional 7mm of clearance on the strut, of which the Kuhmo takes 3.8mm back. The other way to look at it is that I lose 7mm + 3.8mm of room between the tire and fender (of which I have approximately 20mm to spare) and gain 7mm + 3.8 mm of track on each side. This leaves me about 9mm of room from the tire to the (rolled) fender. It's pretty close, and that's why I love it

Basically what all that means is that I am still interested in the Volk wheels, sleepy-scoobie. Let's do this thing. Anyone else want in? It'd be really nice to get the 3 person discount.
Oh, and I'll take the (brake dust hiding) gunmetal color please. Hate me all you want, but these beauties will probably never be washed except in the off-season.

I did similar type calculations while sitting here at work looking like I'm doing something useful. I want the exact wheels as you , AutoWRXer, with the same tires! Any chance of gunmetal with a blingin' polished lip? How dark is the gunmetal color? I've never seen a picture of it. If it's too dark, I might just get the silver and let it get dirty.

I'm guessing the BFG KDs weight about 25.5lbs.

Hey guys. I found a place that has 17x8 SSR comps with 45 offset for like $380 each. They offer tire packages, too, and will beat tirerack's prices on the tires. Maybe they'd give even more of a discount if we had multiple people. I like those rims a little better than the CE-28n, but then again, I've never seen the ce-28n in gunmetal color. I definitely want to get something pretty soon.
| AUTOwrXER | 01-25-2003 08:31 PM |
I would only be interested in the SSRs if they were close to $300 each. For almost $400 I would rather get the Volks. They are better wheels regardless of looks.

Okay, opinion time... I'm looking at some Kuhmos, the Ecsta vs the Victoracer.. here's the specs according to tirerack:

size rim rim sect tread overall rev/
range width width width diameter mile
Kuhmo Victoracer V700
245/45ZR17 7.5-9" 8" 9.7" 9.1" 25.3" 820
Kuhmo ECSTA V700
235/40WR17 8-9.5" 8.5" 9.5" NA 24.2" 850

They list 7.5" rims as kosher with the 245 Victos... but will some Rota Attacks and the WRX wheel wells handle these bad boys?
I'm assuming I should be able to get away with the 235 Ecstas, plus they're cheaper ($147ea vs. $153ea), and they'll help gearing w/ the smaller diameter... but tirerack lists 8" as the min rim width! W/up with that?
Any of you guys with more experience than me have some opinions? Also, how do the new Ecstas hold up, has anyone run a full season on them? I hear good things about the Victos: not as good as the Hoosiers, but they last a whole season, but I'm hearing the new v700's may not be quite as good.

Hey Joel, nice seeing you again at the PRO event.
Anyone want to see what my BFGs look like after 30 runs? Each run was >70s. Most of the damage was done on Sunday when the driving got a little more aggresive and I stopped making tire adjustments. My (front) left tire was at 50psi and my right at 40psi because of the direction of the course with TONs of right hand sweepers. Once I hit 50psi I stopped adding air even though the temperatures said I needed more. Sunday was just fun runs anyway.

I did win $100 in Tirerack money though, so maybe that will help.

OT:
I plan to write up a review of my experience of PRO as soon as I can find some time. I'm *suppose* to be working at the moment so it may take a while before I can get to it. I've never been to a Tour or ProSolo so I don't really have a good comparison. Also, some of the things I experienced at the PRO event also carry over to Tour and ProSolo. Namely, the great people you get to meet and hang with. I competed with MANY National Champions and they were all very helpful and friendly.
I'm not sure if you have ever met Steven Volpp (the guy who started PRO), but he is just an awesome guy. Super friendly. I HOPE that PRO does very well, because the people running it are top notch and it does bring a lot to the sport in new technology, higher pay out, and it adds many more National style events for us who just can't get enough in a year.
Currently, they have a couple of kinks they need to iron out, but once those things get fixed, I think it will be a top notch AutoX organization. It is great for me because they are bringing 4 events within 3 hour drives of my house, when previously, I had none that close.
I plan to write up a review of my experience of PRO as soon as I can find some time. I'm *suppose* to be working at the moment so it may take a while before I can get to it. I need to start thinking about my next set of shoes. Currently running 225/45/17 712's. The car has a 1-inch drop. 1 neg camber in back, and up to 4 in the front. No rubbing whatsoever.
Thinking about 235's or 245s. I have Rota tarmac's (48mm offset, 7.5 in wide). I'd like to try some 245/45/17 Falken Azenis' for autocross.
Has anyone put these on their car w/ a similar setup yet?

If you read through this thread you can get most of the info you are looking for. Most of us feel 245/45 would be too big to fit and give you bad gearing.
Unless you are going to National events, Azenis in 225/45 should be fine, IMO.

WHTWRX-
I think you will have some problems trying to fit the 245/45/17 Falkens. The increased diameter of the tire causes problems with rubbing the strut, even if you do move the wheel out some with a lower offset. For about the same cost I think you will be better off with the Kuhmo MX 245/40/17. It may still be tough to fit with a 48 offset, but that probably depends on your coilovers. Tom seems to be having trouble with his Tein HAs, but I have seen that setup work with Tein RAs. I have the Tein flex, and I think I will need to move the wheels a bit further out to prevent rubbing the strut (hence the Volk ET44 group buy).
Just my opinion...

Wow, this tire looks like its going to cord on the outside edge in a few more events. These things wear too much like R rubber  Remember, there is not much rubber there on that edge.
http://66.123.66.130/dussandersTires/tire_wear/DSC00008.JPG
Youre saying this has the *least* amount if wear on it? That looks like it has been through some hell.
I guess with some rotation you should be ok, but you might be picking up another set depending on how many events you do this year.
I would call BFG and find someone there who you can send those pics to and ask them how much there is left until you cord that outside edge.

No, no, no. Your suppose to say those tires look fine and they will last 100 more runs.
arg, maybe I should look into getting some sort of sponser or soemthing...hum.
Actually I might switch to a cheaper tire mid year and swap back to fresh BFGs before Nats if I feel I have a chance...decisions, decisions.

I don't know if I agree with you tom...
if you look at following pics

and
http://66.123.66.130/DussandersTires/tire_wear/dsc00004.jpg
you can see that there is not a lot of tire there in the first place.
IMHO, you oversteering the car through the corner. I'll bet those tires were squealing like pigs in the corners! If they were, then unwind the steering wheel a bit.

do you mean understeer?
Through the sweepers I kept the car pretty neutral with off throttle oversteer. In the transitions I was pretty neutral as well. I has some minor understeer is some lane change corners, but nothing too major. I know how to unwind when I push. I think most of the wear happened when I let Steve Hoelscher drive it and never got out and changed the tire pressures. I was running 50psi in the left front, but the pyrometer said I still needed more air.
The tires didn't make that much noise actually.
I sent an email to BFGoodrich, I'm betting 10% chance I get a response. I'll call them if I don't here form the via email.

Well I guess if you compare them to the new ones, then maybe there isnt *that* much wear. But they still look like ass for street tires with not that many runs on them ;)

"we can't tell anything from pictures. Take it to a local tire place and ask them." Local guys won't know crap.. Oh, well. I need to find someone who races on these tires.
Hey, at least they responded.

How long were the runs you were doing? From your other post it sounded like you did about as many runs as you would in about 5-6 normal autox events.
| Dussander | 02-08-2003 05:07 PM |
77s - 68s for 30 runs. 15 in the 71-68s, the other 15 in the 77 -73s range.
So, LONG. :)
Too be honest I was a little bored of running after that many runs. :D
