The SEB has made the recommendation to the BOD that the rule be changed to 245 for STX. I think its safe to buy tires now Mr. Hoppe and KC.

Maybe I should go into the "rolling fenders" business. :)
Should be interesting to see these rims+tire combos on some Subarus.
I'll stick with my 205/55R16 Azenis and use the smaller size as another excuse I can't win. :D

Glad to see they're nice and cheap! 245/40-17 Hoosiers are cheaper!:lol:
I think I'll either stick with the 225 Azenis or get some 245/40 Ecsta MX's for now and wait until June/July to see if I'm going to Nationals.

Yup, same thing with 16" wheels. SO3s come in a 235, but they are not going to be a competitive tire.
We will pretty much have to go to 17" wheels to get 245s that will win.
Im still having some issues with the rear tires though. I wonder if the 245/40/17 has any chance in HELL of fitting in the rear of the car. I know the 225/45/17 should fit no problem, but Im a little weary of running the car staggered and worried about the center diff a little. I know of a few people that have stuffed 245/45/17 Kumhos under the car but no one with a 245/40/17.
Anyone here have 225/45/17s with ROTAs that could see how much room there is between the strut and the fender???

Tom,
Michilin pilot sport come in a 235. Aren't they Porche OEM? A 245/40/17 should fit the rear (sedan) depending on the strut used

As I was saying "competitive" tire  that means Azenis and KD
Im using tein coilovers. Car is lowered a bit. Im thinking about just order two tires now. Try them on the rear first. If they don't rub too badly then order two more.

Just a thought...
Since so many people have posted about how the car doesn't want to rotate, will the fatter 245 rubber call for more dramatic suspension geometry - toe out?
Now we're into the voodoo

OK, so 245 tires are allowed, what wheels are we gonna be putting these bad boys on??? I don't think my 17x7.5's are the optimal rim for a 245/40-17. Heck a 235/40-17 would be a bit much!

Ok, now we're talking rolling diameter. The 245/40-17 tire has almost the same rolling diameter as a 225/45-17 or a 205/55-16, which will keep the speedo errors low. (The 245/40 is .6mph slower at 60mph... when the speedo reads 60, you're really going 59.4... the 245/45 with the speado reading 60, you're really going 61.7)
A 245/45-17 will have a higher rolling diameter than a stock rolling diameter... which means it's a taller tire than the rest. For sake of auto-x, it may not be the tire size to have, and in our cases, shouln't be thought about. Only the 245/40-17 is the tire. You *don't* want taller gearing at an auto-x. :)
Most 245/40's are recommended to be mounted on an 8" rim minimum. (Tire rack lists these under the tire specs)
--kC
(And #5 at National events comes down to who sends in their payments/registration to national HQ 1st. :D )

Correct, but what 17x8's are readily available and in what offset? 17x7.5 w/ 48 offset is the most commonly found wheel, but I've seen very few 17x8's.

that's what I was gonna do with the 245/40 MX's since buying a house makes another set of wheels impossible right now.
too bad Falken won't be introducing new Azenis sizes. i'll be calling them soon since they sponsor my team. maybe we can put a little pressure on them.

I believe Volk makes the TE-37 in 5x100 17x8 ET 45 (also 42 iirc), which IMO should be the ideal wheel for fitting 245s. Plus a baseball bat of course :)
I cant afford a set of $2k wheels but for those of you who can pay to play, go for it!

For me, the price of the KDs makes it impossible for me to buy wheels as well, so I have to stick with the Rotas.
Check out http://www.robsaudiworld.com/fender.htm
for fender rolling. He rents a fender rolling machine. $50 plus shipping both ways. It ends up costing about $75, but I would rather do that then try it with a baseball bat. This way seems much safer and better for me. Im on the list and will have this sucker in raleigh around the end of december :)

Tom, after seeing the car we saw and said "ruhroh, rowd ee doo dat?!" with the 245 Kumhos on the car... I'm thinkin a street tire should be narrower section width than a race tire, and those 245/40s will be a slightly shorter tire too, giving you a little extra fender height to play with. I don't see why a 245/40 with rounded shoulders would be more difficult to squish in than a 245/45 with square shoulders.

I might have misunderstood Tom's post before. I thought he was worried about fitment of the 245/40/17 KDs, after we'd seen a WRX on 245/45/17 Victoracers... oops.
My bad if that is the case!

No No, chris was right. I saw me one of them der WRXs with some 245/45/17 Victoracers with no rubbing.
I thought the 245/40 were a little wider then a 245/45. You know I totally forgot that, that was a RACE tire. They are wider then standard street tires, so chris, youre right, these should fit ok.
The only thing here is that those wheels were 52 offset according to shawn. The Rota's are 48 offset so I still might have to roll me some fender!

I've only really seen the BFGs on RW's car, and they seemed to have a fairly rounded shoulder. However, every tire on that car seems to have a rounded shoulder :)
I forgot the rule about tires... ie that the numbers stamped on the side can be highly arbitrary. the 245/40 COULD be substantially wider than a 245/45... not sure how likely it is, but for instance, the 205/50/15 Azenis is as wide as/wider than a 215/40/16 Kumho 712. Has anyone actually put a tape measure on the two tires to compare their actual total width, sidewall included?
BTW, can see your future "for sale" ad now... "replaced rear fenders since original ones were bowed out 2" with a glorified baseball bat..." :D

there is almost no way you could fit 245's on the car with a 52 offset. What are the stock rim offset like 55? with 225 EV700 on stock rims they almost rub my coilovers. You're going to need something with at most a 48 offset to fit the 245's on.
I can't believe you guys aren't all over the Advan RC2 in a 8.5 inch width with 45 offset. The width will maximize tread contact more than a 8 inch rim and it will also create a shorter sidewall. Gruppe-S has these for $405 a piece. Probably more than some of you want to spend, but it's the cheapest option that I know of at the moment. The only other rims you can get in 17x8 are Volk and just about every Volk rim is more money than the Advan.
Look at all the tuner cars from Japan, I dunno if the fenders are rolled or not, but they stuff the biggest rims and tires they can on the car. Bozz and Zerosports are the main ones I can think of and I've seen RC2 with 245's on a couple of their cars.
I run SM, but I'll probably go with RC2's with 245/40 Victoracers

yeah if 8" is max width Volk is probably your best bet. do you remember the thread a couple months ago where I was lobbying like crazy to get Tire Rack to bring over a wider Type C in a 17" size?
I'm too cheap to pay for Volk's or SSR's, we need to get Rota on the ball.

Volk CE 28N @ 17x8 +44 about $450 (ouch:eek: )
Volk TE 37 @17X8 +46
I liked the Volks because they are forged somewhat unique and about 14-16lbs.
The Rotas in a 17x7.5 (do they make an 8"?) are about 17lbs. not much difference.
Do you think that there are enough people to interest a manufacturer to make a "special" suby wheel for a 245 width and custom offset?

Here are spec's from BFG for the KD:
Tire Size Section width Tread width
245/40-17 9.8" 7.9"
245/45-17 9.6" 7.5"
225/45-17 8.9" 6.9"
Check out the extra .4" of tread width you pick up with the 40's.
Note: the 245/45-17 Azenis also has a 9.8" section width
Guess we wagon owners are gonna be at a significant disadvantage running 225's - giving up a full 1" of tread width is pretty significant.

Well my Rota Attacks weight 15.5lbs for the 17x7.5 and are $400 for the whole set of 4
Well the 245 tire will be a little bit thinner on a 7.5 inch wheel then on a 8.5 in wheel, so I should be good to go. I also have 3mm spacers sitting here to make my 48 offset a 45 offset if need be.
The 245s and rotas should be here just in time for xmas so I can do some test fitting them.

My Subzeros are only slightly heavier at 16-16.5 lbs. I still want to get a set of attacks as a backup. I'm wondering what the weight of the various 245/40's will be the 225/45 Azenis is relatively heavy at over 25 lbs., the 245's are really heavy!

are spacers legal? From the discussions on the ST mailing list, its pretty obvious that some of these guys will protest for the smallest weenie reasons.

Yup, you are allowed to run any offset wheels in ST classes. That includes running whatever spacers you want.
Yes, at the national level you can and WILL get protested for the littlest stupid thing. The beauty of that is that everyone pretty much knows it so *most* people don't cheat because the chances of them getting caught are pretty good :)
I would have a hard time protesting a Type R or another car like that because I don't know much about them, but if someone in a WRX spanks me, it would take me about 5 mins in inpound to look over their car and determine whether it was legal or not.

I just sent e-mails to technical information contacts at both BFG and Falkan about their limited 245 sizes inquiring if they have any plans for adding to their line-ups.
I haven't researched any other manufacturers yet. To anyone interested I'll post any replys that I receive.
Cheers
Edit - removed repetitive tire size data. duh  - just saw the previous BFG/Falkan size options above.

Heh I used some really really worn out S-03s at a couple of autoxs last year and man those things were grippy.
I called dibs on a set of 16x8 +45 rims that Nino was selling in vendor classifieds. A set of 13.5lb rims in +45 was too good to pass up. My only problem now is will they fit. I _want_ to run 245/45/16 V700s but I run DMS50 coilovers and in the rear my 225/45 S-03s were almost rubbing on the lower spring perches this year. Section width difference is 9.7 on the 245s to 9.0 on the 225s, is this a lost cause at this point? No one makes a 235 tire in 16" size, and putting a 225 on an 8" rim is suboptimal.
My original plan was to just run 235/40/17 on some Rota Attacks, I'm sure I won't have any problem selling the 16x8s to some other autox guy. :)

dwx, to back up Tom's statement... V700's are not legal in ST-S/X. Street touring is not a 'DOT' based class, the tires you can run are based off the rather arbitrary treadware rating that manufacturers put on the side of the tire, which is 140 or higher.
Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, we will not be expanding our current offering of six sizes in the AZENIS Sport line. Due to unforeseen production limitations we were not able to bring in additional sizes previously planned.

SSR Comps which are +50. I don't think the outside is going to be as much of a problem as the inside. Anyways I somehow doubt anyone has run this combo so I'll just order a test 245/45/16 and have it mounted just to check the fitment.

The ideal situation would be for some of the competitive manufacturers to add a 245/40/16 to their lineup. I was just getting the motivation to spring for 16x8s for the 225 sizes when this news broke. I hate that I will have to give up the diameter and the weight to move to 17s. I am eager to hear BFG's response now that Falken has bailed on the expanded sizes. I wouldn't be surprized if Kuhmo and BFG decided to join the party.
Off-topic, but since protests came up earlier I was hoping to get some closure on a couple of things. Has anyone determined if the STi AL control arms are legal for STX? Also, what is the consensus on the Whiteline ALK? I think I heard that the Cusco lower arm bar is legal, but these were a series of regional conversations which may draw some fire at divisionals/nationals.
Thanks in advance for the rules clarification.

The general consensus is the STi arms and ALK are not legal for STX. There's even a question if the ALK is legal in SM... it does alter the suspension geometry.

| AUTOwrXER | 12-10-2002 07:44 PM |
True, but isn't it a valid argument that the ALK is really just a bushing and that it doesn't constitute changing a suspension mounting point? Has this ever been determined in a protest or statement by the ST committee or SEB?
Also, according to the talk on sccaforums.com, different control arms (including adjustable arms) are legal as long as they use the stock locations. Any one else have some input on these issues?
