Subaru Corral at the 2003 USGP in Indy-Original Thread! part 1

Streetman 07-31-2002 05:05 AM

Subaru Corral at the USGP in Indy
Get this. I called IMS today after seeing something about the "Car Corral" on their website. After speaking with a very friendly manager, she informs me we can set this up for Subarus.

Here's the deal, we all get to park in the infield. All I need is number of cars that'll be there and WHERE YOUR TICKETS ARE, and they'll give us our very own section.

Update from IMS:
The Corral will be located in the third turn (outside the formula one track - but inside the oval) and your group will enter from Gate 10 - just off of 30th Street.

The cost? It's FREE ! So far they've got Porche, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Jaguar, and Mercedes corrals. I think it would be cool to have the geek, er, Subaru corral. PLUS, it's free, and inside the track. That's hard to do. Normally, it's $20 a day.
This is for Sunday only

I have ordered 30 plaquards (them parkinging pass thingees that hang from the rear view mirror, and block you vision).

I will get them no later than September 1st, along with maps.

If you are not listed as mailed, or picking up, I don't know what you are doing!!! Email me, via the little button below.

Still 5 more unaccounted for. What's up? I'm going to give these away, to try to get more Subaru's in, if they're not claimed. Per IMS's request it is "mostly Subaru", so we can afford to throw in a rental, if that's all you're concerned about. Let me know, SOON.
cd3575 07-31-2002 11:55 AM

Count me in,

Think we could sneek a 3g eclipse in?
Jonathan 07-31-2002 12:20 PM

Damn, Josh !!!
Thats absolutely awesome !!!

Being unemployed this year, I've been attempting (sort of) to cut down on my expenses...

But free ? Thats just what I wanna hear.
Can we watch the race from this location, by any chance ?

I STILL have not purchased tickets, or made any sort of arrangements for where I am staying or anything (yet), but count me in on this.

Thanks.

MulletSlayer 07-31-2002 05:14 PM

Has anyone who purchased four tickets for the USGP got an invitation to take a lap of the F-1 Couse in your car? I did but I haven't seen anyone else post about it.

It sounds like its just one lap and they probably will make you drive extra slow. I have never seen anything about a track day at Indy so I think I am going to do it just for the experience.

And the Car Corral thing sounds like a good idea.
Streetman 07-31-2002 05:54 PM

cd-
I did tell her that somepeople might be in the club, but driving rentals. I was told to try to keep it to Subaru as much as possible. I've got enough interest locally (and Midwest), and therefore quite a few cars, that I think we can sneak in a Eclipse.

Jonathan-
I highly doubt they'll let you watch the race from there. I think General admission is only $30 that day.

'Slayer-
Anyone who has/does purchase 4 tickets will get to drive around, on August 18th. I was told ~30 to ~35 MPH. Still, crossing the yard of bricks in anything is cool. I've taken the tour bus around it a few times, and am always amazed at how banked it is, at only 11 degrees. I've never been allowed on the F1 track though. Just a though, what are they going to do with you if you bust out, and start ripping around the track? I'd like to cross the yard of bricks at 100 +. Anyone can't make it, and wanna give me their ticket?

Anyone who knows for sure that they'll be in the corral, email me with how many people, and how many/type of cars.
Rattler 07-31-2002 11:04 PM

Is this just on the infield for the F1 race? I think that will be the only one I will be attending. Waiting to hear from my ticket connection too yet.

Inside of the 500's turn three, outside the F1 track I believe. Right where the legend is on this map. I'll know for sure tomorrow. Email me if you're in. I've got threads coming out my ass to respong to.

I'd be interested.

What days would this be (Friday, Sat. Sun.)?
Lorenzo 08-02-2002 04:15 PM

count me in for one car 2ppl

Larry
Streetman 08-02-2002 04:43 PM

Emails, please! Much easier for me to get a list confirmed.

I just spoke with the wonderful lady at IMS, and got full details. First off, this is for Sunday only. Second, you will need to purchase a ticket. There is no general admission for Sunday, as there has been in the past. The cheapest grandstad seat is $45 for that day. That will allow you to sit somewhere, as well as walk around the infield, just like general admission.

Also, I confirmed that parking is really free. I still can't believe it. I am to get a count on how many cars are coming, and where everyone's seats are. We will most likely be where I said, but they are going to see where most people's seats are first. They will put the corral closest to the majority. Once we have a final #, and I they know where everyone is sitting, they'll issue the passes. The passes for parking outside the track are selling for $20 each, so this is a hell of a deal.

That means I need to know where your seats are, as well as how many parking passes you'll need. Again, email me with who is going, and also where your tickets are. I'll start compiling a list, at the top of this thread.

Give my your name on this board, as well as your real name in your email. I'm getting emails from names I don't know.

Josh,

How is this thing going...It is still up in the air whether I am working or not, if I don't I might go in on this.

Chris
RonA 08-06-2002 02:49 PM

I have 2 extra tickets for section J if anyone is interested.
Streetman 08-06-2002 04:04 PM

A2CPC-

It's going great. I'd say there's another 5 cars coming, that I know of right now, but don't know names. Plus, others coming in at about 1 or 2 a day. We still have a month and a half. It's going to go off, and go off well. We could use all the local guys cars there to make up for the few rentals and whatnot that'll be coming in. We need to keep it as much Subi as possible, per IMS's instruction.

I DO NEED TO KNOW WHERE EVERYONE IS SITTING THOUGH!!!

I've also got the weekend manager at Johansson's trying to set up an event right now for us. Something quick, like a few heats, and a final. He's a friend of mine, and knows Elwood too, so we should get something.

I just know this is going to go well. I kinda felt it out for the last two years, and now I'm willing to go big with it. Everyone, come on over!!!
synapse79 08-08-2002 03:18 AM

this is a cool idea until the race ends and you need to leave.. unless you plan on camping on the infield til the masses clear..

ideally you want to be, usually you dont have much of a choice, a few blocks away near a main strech.. what is amazing is the cops run most of the wide main streets coming directly out as a one way street which dramatically helps traffic move.. but im still not sure parking on the infield is a good idea unless you are on a skinny motorcycle..
Streetman 08-08-2002 05:39 AM

Every year I've been to the 500 (even larger croud), I've hung out at the track for a good while after the race. Why not do the same thing with 20 or so Subaru's and pleanty of people to hang with? No matter where you park, inside or out, you are going to spend some serious time after the race, waiting, or walking a few miles to your car. If you care about your car, park it inside.

If I hadn't made it clear, I figured everyone would make this more like a Subaru meet than simply a place to park, and then a mad dash into traffic. Everyone cool with hanging for a while?
synapse79 08-08-2002 10:22 AM

last year was the first time ive been down there..
i was just trying to decide if i wanted to tend with trying to get out and what you guys were going to do..

i dont think your car has to be inside to be safe..
i saw ferraris, porsches lotus and everything else under the sun along the street on my walk to the track, they didnt seem to be concerned, but it was like a car show walking there..
a2cpc 08-09-2002 10:57 AM

Here we go.
Josh,

I still can't get the IMS Production people to let me know if I am working or not. If I am working I won't have time to participate in the corral, although I will try to stop by. If I am not working I would love to come but I don't have tickets yet(The guys who may hire me said they would get me tickets if I don't work:) ). By then I should have my new wagon so I might be able to bring 2 cars. Can you just get some extra spaces...or when is the deadline?
m3eater 08-09-2002 02:17 PM

f1 is my favorite sport!!! how far is that from new york, when is it, and is anyone from new york going to it?
Streetman 08-09-2002 04:47 PM

a2cpc-

No deadline has been set. I was just told to get it together, asap. I have a decent idea of how much space we'll need, so I left the wonderful woman at IMS ticket office a message today. She seems pretty flexible. Also, they don't even have a schedule of events yet, so I figure they're not all together either. I'll see if she can give as a deadline. It's hard to get things done without one.
Oh yeah, I think I'll get a few extra spaces for last minute people. At least, I hope to.
cd3575 08-09-2002 05:29 PM

Streetman,
Sorry to be posting this here but I am a bit confused. I have general admissio0n for the race this year will this effect me?
If not could you please mail me with some more information. I need to change my email address on here could you please mail me at [emailprotected]?

Thanks

No worries. Unlike previously thought, you don't need a grandstand ticket. Although, they are really, really pushing that you do buy one. I think they're a little freaked at how many tickets are left.

I just sat down with the manager at Prodrive Karting (formerly Johansson's). We talked about a possible event Friday 7:00 AM or so, so we'd be free in plenty of time for start of practice. All the eves are booked up so this is about the only available time to have an event that won't overlap activities at the speedway.

I know that's early, but one of my coworkers is in on it and expects to bring some people from the atlas F1 message board. Dont know how many, he's doing the same thing right now - gauging interest. but I'm hopin between the 2 clubs, we'll be able to fill up an event.

So I need to know how many people will be in town friday AM, and would want to run. being a former employee, I can usually squeeze em for a discount, but, this is a BIG weekend for them. I'm gonna throw out a ballpark figure of $80/ person. That's normal retail price for a 2 hr event. Our actual cost may be more or less.

If you want more info on the place, check out these threads from previous events we've run there.

I am going to the lap of F1 Indy next week! From PA.

Anybody else? I am driving my Scooby, but for the race in Sept, I will probably rent.

Any chance of meeting up at the Lap?

If anyone is interested in going, there is an auction on eBay for a Lap ticket.

eBay

I am planning on making a big road trip out of this. Colts game Saturday night and Reds game Monday afternoon.

BTW, a few years ago I was fortunate enough to park in the infield on race day. The beer stands were still open after the race and by the time I finished another oil can (25oz Fosters) there wasn't much traffic at all.

But the coolest thing was race morning when everyone is waiting in line to park, infield people get waved right IN!

If anybody is getting together, please email me.

Karting sounds like a blast as it was a blast last year. But that 7am thing may not work to good for our group. If we make it to town Thursday evening I am sure us 3 guys are going to down a few cold ones that evening:D Their is a chance we wont get in town till Friday morn tho:confused:

Ellwood, thanks for going thru the work. We might be in for another Saturday night sprint.

Bonzo/Dave
nhalterman 08-12-2002 11:22 AM

Unless I find a place to stay last minute (no chance), I won't be there until Sun.
Elwood 08-13-2002 11:50 PM

karting - too early, I know...
I was afraid of that. Sounds like we need to plan about 6 mos ahead of time to get a reasonable time slot during a big race weekend...

Also, we'll probably plan another one in the future on a different, less busy weekend. lotsa fun if you're close enough to make it....
Streetman 08-14-2002 06:23 AM

If everyone can get out of the track early enough, I might be able to set something up at the other track, on the north side. I've been told the schedule is about the same as last year, at IMS. That being said, for the last two years, Ferrari qualifying has been from 4:30-5:00 pm Saturday, barring rain/B.S. delays. I was at the go kart track at 6:00 last year and they were dead. If we can make it there by then, we could set up a small event. A mini grand prix is what I have envisioned. A couple heat races, followed by a final. That's about the best we can hope for, I think. By 7:00, they had a one hour wait. It's early, or wait around half the night.

How does everyone feel about it? You might have to cut out early if there is a delay in the schedule, or just get gone right away, following the events. I figure if everything ends on time, at 5:00, an hour is pleanty of time to get though traffic, and up here. It's normally 20 minutes to the go kart track from IMS.

Gimme a little feedback here, and I'll make arrangements. This would be the same track we raced at last year, for those of you who were here. It would basically be the same amount of time on track as open practice, so I figure it'll cost about the same-$20. I know some of you are heading here on a budget.

Hotel rooms available...
If anyone is interested, I'm sitting on two extra hotel rooms in Indy for race weekend. They are at a Red Roof Inn on the south side of town. The best part? I have them confirmed at $59 per night!

Here's the rest of the scoop: Both rooms are reserved for two adults. They are three night reservations, for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Also, they are under one reservation, so you will need to find enough people to fill both rooms.

Basically, I'm willing to give these up to fellow enthusiasts that will take the reservation as is. I've sat on these rooms since shortly after last year's race, and I don't want to have to mess with dropping nights, cutting a room out, etc. I'm not trying to be an ass, I just don't have time to bother with it.

If you're seriously interested and are willing to take both rooms, just let me know! :)
Streetman 08-17-2002 03:37 AM

Schedule has been announced. http://my.brickyard.com/usgp/press/...hp?story_id=394

As I thought, it's about the same as last year. That being said, the last event on Saturday is: 4:30-5 p.m. Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli qualifying session #2

OK, with THAT being said, you can watch the rich guys driving their Ferrari's on Friday, and on Sunday...so let's do an early karting event, and not wait around all night.

Sound good? Here's what I have in mind. Three heat races ~10 minutes a piece, 9 drivers. The top three people in each move forward to a final heat. I don't know what extras/price I can get, but I'll work it out. You guys up for it? It's probably going to have to start before 6:00, so you might miss the one qualifying session of the privileged folk who bought their way into the USGP.

Let me know who wants in, and I'll get some details.

Streetman 08-29-2002 04:03 PM

I've been ultra busy/disorganized lately. I know some of you have emailed me, and I have not responded. I'll have time after Friday to get it back together. I'm taking the Impala up to the Auborn Duesenberg this weekend. Last chance for any of you to buy it, before it goes on the block!

Everything for the corral is set, I'm just waiting on the passes. The only update is that we will be entering Gate 10, if that matters.

It looks as if we'll have ~25 cars. It's no problem if there is more, I just need to know. So if any of you have requested passes, and aren't on the list, email me again. I'll get everything updated Saturday.
Streetman 08-31-2002 10:34 PM

Updated the list. Did I miss anyone? Anyone else want in? I'm counting 22 right now.

If you are not on the list, I missed you. I think I got everyone though. I told the lady at IMS 30, so there's still some room. Room I'd like to fill, if at all possible.

Feel free to email me direct, if you a have a question specific to your situation.

Streetman 09-16-2002 05:14 PM

It was for anyone who bought 4 or more tickets for the USGP. They ran the F1 course, at about 10 MPH. Yes, that's 10, not 100. Although slow, the one person who did it, that I know of, loved it. He posted some pics here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=242210
OAKOS Automotive 09-16-2002 05:50 PM

The reduced speed would put a bit of a damper on the fun but it would still be very cool to see the track from the track. My brakes probably couldn't handle much more anyhow. ;)
