The OFFICIAL: Auto-X Video Analysis thread part 3

AndrewSS 08-01-2006 01:45 AM

^ I dunno - one thing I could say is maybe try to tidy up your slalom work, trying to keep it tight and accelerate through it
tuskenraider 08-01-2006 09:49 AM

^^^ Definately. You're turning too late. Turn in earlier, get the back wheel close to running the cone over, and you'll be able to carry more speed through it. Torwards the end where you don't have to "thread" the car as much through tight elements, it seems you're a little too far off some of the "key" cones, a little hard to tell with the view. Sweep wide and in tighter(late apex)....again to get that back wheel on the cone. Oh, and take the mirror jewellery down! Suprised tech let you pass with that.
fantomrex24 08-01-2006 11:36 AM

too wide into the slalom. & you need to mix in a lil more braking. dont start so far out from the 1rst cone on the slalom that way you can keep your steering down which will keep your speed constant.but the course looked kinda kick a$$. damn thats a happy cone carving banana!

Video from aweome autox last month
I had been meaning to get this online for a while, but i finally did it. Here is a video of my 3rd run from an event held at the Seneca Army Depot. Let me know what you guys think!

You were late on most of the sweepers.

The pivot 180, it looks like you were too far off the cones. You want to be right on the cones on the inside (almost run them over). Park the car if you have to. No matter how close or far to the cones you are, you can only carry one speed around it. So by being close to the cones means less distance you have to travel at a slow speed, which equates to a faster time. You can drop about 3/10-4/10 by being closer to them.

Also, work on your slalom (near the end). You're turning too late. In doing so, you're carrying a slower speed through them. If you turned-in earlier you may find you can carry more speed. As you pass the 2nd to last cone, you should have been on the gas there... not as you pass the last cone. There was plenty of an exit, even with the last gate there, to be able to hammer it out of there. :)

cool, thanks for the input. sure was a fun course, and i'm heading back there sunday for another!

Looks like an awesome course!

Here is my run from today: http://media.putfile.com/andrew-aug20-5thrun

I am pretty happy with it, I wasnt looking ahead enough, I turned in a bit hot in a few areas... oh well - I gotta look ahead better, but oh well. That run wasnt clean (obviously, if you hear what I yell mid run... lol!) but that run would have been 3-4 tenths faster than my fastest clean run today, which got me 1st in STU and 3rd in PAX (ohio valley region).

Thanks for checking it out!
waktasz 08-28-2006 03:09 PM

Here's my fastest run from yesterday. (My first run was faster by a few tenths, but it wasn't raining)

Any tips?
KC 08-28-2006 03:53 PM

Open up your entrances to the sweepers. Most of the cones on the way out, it looks like yoiu didn't have more than 50% turning done by the time you got there. This is really evident in the wet where it's even more important to get more turning done before you get to cones.

You need to run over the backside of them cones!

--kC
waktasz 08-28-2006 04:06 PM

Thanks for the advice, I think I see what you mean. Can you clarify what you mean by opening up the entrances to the sweepers, though? Thanks!
KC 08-28-2006 05:15 PM

Don't aim at the apex cones, aim away from them and late apex them. You want more than 50% of your turning done by the time you're going by the cone.

Your link is broken and what class were you running in? Do I know you? :)
KC 08-29-2006 09:21 AM

Ok everyone... I've critiqued enough... now check mine:

(Yes.. 2nd run sucked very much... my tires didn't stop spinning until the left hander with all the cones... very much out of control.)

Anyone have any good hints on getting the best quality out of Google Video? I admit... I'm not happy with the quality.

Maybe I'll sign up for a better service someplace. :)

Yeesh, that's some terrible video quality right there. I really wish the weather would have held, I think I could have gotten a much better time given a couple more dry runs on that course. I still need to catch a ride with you, though...they need to stop making me work the heat you run in!

Anyways the day with the Porsche club was a blast. Weather turned out perfect. Big turnout. First time running with the new tires. Ran 45 psi all around. Also my first time on a nice windy long course like this. Usually the other club I run with, the runs are only about 45 seconds, the extra time on the course was fun! I noticed the Porsche club didnt have as many long straights. I dont think I had time tou bounce of the limiter.

The FTD was a GT3. 54.11 or something along those lines. I registered in the wrong class, and should have taken home 2nd place, but im glad my freind Renee got something since it was his first time getting a trophy

I believe I was the fastest STi. The only car that was a non porsche that was was faster then me was this awesome miata. Ive seen him at a few events, he usually is first in his class. I didn't even learn the course until my 4th run. It was terrible because I got a late start on things and didnt feel like walking the course. BIG MISTAKE!

Anyways here is the first Vid.

Reviving this thread from the dead!

Here's a vid of the event this sunday. This is my fastest run, although I had a cone. My time was a 34.75 in ESP class. The fastest SS and AS cars of the day were at around 34.1 and 34.4 so I'm decently happy with the results.

I really need to get a cam that can mount further back so you can see my hands, but this will do for now.

Any tips?

That looks like a fun car! Solid as a rock. You early apex'd a lot of turns it looked like. You need to remember, "Attack the back!"

You need to work on being smooth and turning earlier in slaloms. Your car should be right behind the slalom cone and starting to turn in for the next cone. The apex of your turn in a slalom should be inbetween the cones, not at the cones.

Also, while you can only brake hard in a straight line, there aren't really a long of straightaways in autox, so you gotta learn how to trail brake without spinning out.

I must say, Boeing is the most nausea inducing of the lots we use. I feel like I'm gonna vomit after I watched that. The only thing I saw that was off was the 180 turn right before the chicago box. For some reason you turned left really really early, straigthened out, then it looks like you got too deep in the turn.
mikehoyer 05-15-2007 12:03 AM

Yeah waktasz, I just watched your video again, but I had a bucket near by just in case. :p That turn left I mentioned above. It looks like you slowed down to turn left... coasted and then did the 180. I think I just turned that all into one big turn.

But you beat me by more than a second on this course, so I guess you did the better line, so WTF do I know

That's what big tires and 19psi will do for you :)

Which part are you referring to as the 180? If I remember correctly there were like 4 of those on that course.

Do you mean the turn before the chicago box? I'll have to go back and watch the vid when I'm not at work because I'm not sure what you mean.

ps- If you want to teach me how to drive at Warminster, I'll show you what's up at Boeing. It's the only damn place I ever manage to place well.

Thanks for the advice! I'm most likely down this weekend so the next event will be the GASS Divisional so I'll do my best to trail brake some, and work on those slalom apexes and calm down. I'll also have my 2Rs and a tune so it should perform better just with those, but the driver is the best mod of all :D

Unfortunately I'm a dummy and screwed up getting video of all my runs, but here's the best run I have on film from the PA state championship autox event.

I had a pretty good run going until the end I think. I took another half a second off this time by the end of the day IIRC.

Any advice prior to that?
