Congrats Luke you had some fast times in the rain...
I'm sure you'll say it was the car, but in the rain the driver is what makes the car!!!!
The 996TT was by far the dominant setup car and look at your time compared to it in the rain!!!!!!
Great driving!!!
Matt

A very BIG Congrats to you, Luke and the TopSpeed crew! Xlnt preps and super driving. Just goes to show that modded and stock STi's can be very competitive in these multi-format events. Too bad the drags were canceled, would've most likely given you more points :D
As a side note, thx for the tips on using the Slipstreams. I will also use them for upcoming track days. Hey, any issues with any of them? Did you finish on the original set, and the Azenis also? Or we're other set ups used?
Again, super job guys!!
It is only right to help other competitors, probably the most awesome thing about One Lap is that it is very serious to run up front, but because of the nature of the event and the traveling, we all help each other.. I guess you could call us all rivals, but not bitter. It was cool putting those AMS stickers over the lights of the STi :)
....
COngrats to the Subarus, and very importantly, Subaru owners. We were the lone Evo, but the Subaru community was well represented. I felt like that scene in Top Gun where Maverick is in the F-14 and all the migs are doing loops behind him.. We might have had more power, but those multitudes of "enemy" back there were nerve-wrecking. Congrats to the Subaru community on having such a strong showing. THREE STi's in the top 10.
We were watching Kevin's in-car last night from VIR, and he wasn't heel-toeing, I asked about it and he said, "Yea I didn't learn that till Putnam." Seriously good effort for such little experience.
During the awards ceremony Brock Yates was poking fun at our Mitsubishi ("Don't they make the Zeros that bombed Pearl Harbor?") and did some light picking at the Subarus as well. I don't know if a four-door sedan can win this thing overall, but I do expect the bar to come up and a lot of both to be in the top 10. I wonder how people will handle that.
Jon
Awesome to hear all this between rivals. Congrats to you, too, Jon and the AMS crew! Hmmm, wonder if this ever happens in F1?

From the pro events I have done, and the stories i hear, it seems to be very unique to this event. Event though we are ocmpeting against each other, something about driving around the country puts us on the same "team" to complete the event, and the teams are always willing to help each other. It really does make it special. (Even at No Problem Raceway when Luke had the problem with the blow-off valve, Martin was under his hood with Doug troubleshooting)
I want to give my own thanks to Doug and Luke, they really are fun to compete against, and though we are ferociously trying to beat each other on track but we still make it fun, which sometimes is hard to come by when it gets serious.
I also want to thank AMS, yes I know they don't work on Subarus as of now, but it really is awesome to drive for a team that has such focus and drive, but still goes out of their way to help people, and not get caught up in the squabbles that so often dirty the hands of the import tuner community.

OK. I read the whole thing. Here is what I think.
First of all, Pleiades - you owe tom $20. And i get a free ninja kick to the butt for betting against me. Seriously, my whole goal this year was to prove that i'm not some sort of wildman. I was actually driving sanely, and only dropped one wheel off (not even two wheels) the entire One Lap. Now that I think about it, that even amazes me.
The Iowaonians (?) were great, wrxedusa provided helpful info, and wrxrated7 posted my favorite video - even though it's from a cell phone and only 10 seconds long. You aint trying unless that tail is a wiggling.
VIDEO
The camaraderie is awesome. Lipperini cut a tire and had no spares, so I gladly provided one of mine. Martin jumped in and attempted to help us find our boost problem. The Davia Porsche gave us 10 gallons of C16. The list goes on and on. And Doug gets the credit for putting out Kevins fire.
It's kind of a funny story. I was walking back to my car, which was by Kevins. I see Brock Jr. (the organizer) running in circles, cussing up a storm, carrying the world's largest fire extinguisher. I said, "what the heck is he doing, I think he's finally gone nuts". I can't see Kevins car, but I can see his tent, which is bouncing all over the place. Apparently Kevin left his fire extinguisher buried in there. Then I see Doug dive head first into my car, grab my extinguisher, and then I finally put it all together - "crap, Kevin's car is on fire". I start sprinting, Doug starts spraying, and it goes out for a second, then comes back. My extinguisher is now empty. Brocker shows up about to pass out from carrying this 100 lb. fire extinguisher. He wheezes out the words, "somebody grab this". I get it to the ground but don't know what to do with it, it's some fancy thing. Doug figures it out and it instantly covers a 50' area with some strange green chemical. Brock yells, "don't breathe, don't breathe", but too late. We all feel like crap for the next several hours. The fire crew finally shows up and runs over the guys stuff unloaded next to Kevin's car. All kinds of crunchy noises. We don't have the right hoses to help him out, so AMS jumps in. One of their guys pulls out all the melted bits. Doug tells them how to limp it to AMS, and AMS helps them get it back together.
Here are some pics I stole:

story of the fire. during the first session in the morning on my last lap i went from 145 in sexth gear to a miss shift into third. luckily i got on the clutch real quick, but the tranny was not very happy after that. I talked to a few people about it and they said not to worry. but it was still in the back of my mind for the second session. I get going on the track and have no problems. I take my rec lap trying to figure out the best line. we stage up and I get my green off I go. they had made us put the window down so when a little bit of smoke started creeping into the car I just figured it was the tranny settling itself down. all my gauges did not indicate a problem, so i just cracked the rear window so the smoke would go out. On the second lap I notice that sombody was leaving a line of oil on the track and right on the race line. thinking to myself that they must of pulled that person off the track I thought nothing of it. then on the third lap i notice two lines of oil, on the race line. the car was also a little looser than it had been in the morning session. I look in my rear view mirror and I am being chased by a lot of smoke. I figure, might as well finish and then not take my warm down lap, so I cross the finish line, hit the brakes and turn in at the end of the pits. as soon as i slow down a lot of smoke starts coming through my hood. Oh no, i think, must have fried something :( as soon as i stop flames start shooting out of my hood. at this popint i go diving into my tent looking for the extingushier. while i am doing this i notice a blur as doug, who can move fast, comes flying over with his extinguisher. luckily he kept the flames back until Brock and others come running over with the heaviest most complicated fire extinguishers I have ever seen. luckily brock figures out how to use his, douses the engine, while I am holding the hood open. after the green haze settles over us somebody starts yelling to not breath it in. too late, that stuff burns by the way. anyway, all was well, cannabalized some parts, took it to AMS and they hooked me up big time. thanks again to Doug, Luke, and the AMS crew. not to mention Brock, and the fire crew. turns out I had been on fire for the whole hot lap session. As soon as I get the pics I will post, I was told after every lap it just got worse. turns out the oil return line on the turbo decided to die and I was leaking oil right on the exhaust. note to self, learn more about cars!
| RyanC | 05-16-2006 09:46 PM |
dude, when you went by on your second lap, Brocker was standing next to me giving me the pre-run pep talk. Someone came in over the radio and said the black subaru's brakes are on fire. Brock and I look at each other, then look at the rain, so he replies, "Isn't the rain putting that out?". The rest, as they say, is history... glad to see though that you guys were ok. All I saw after you came into the pits was a bit ass cloud of smoke and people running, but I was belted in and couldn't check for myself. Sorry we didn't get to swap rides, I still want a spin in that car :)

kemon78 - this might be WTLW for a lot of people, but check out what can happen with a ruptured oil line right by the turbo. (Actually, I'm just 100% speculating that's what this is, but a "fun" vid nonetheless... "fun" as in "not your car, sucks to be that guy" fun.)

Hey guys I know I haven't been on the forums in a long time but as you can imagine I've been quite busy with all these past 3 One Laps and other projects.
We've got some great video from inside the 996TT of Luke after he past Mark at Road America, we thought he was going to go off but he pulled it all together and kept in on track. At the very least it will go into Mark's One Lap 2006 DVD which will be for sale for $20 later this year. (proceeds go to charity).
I know I don't have a Subaru anymore (1991 Porsche C4) but a Porsche is like a Subaru going backwards!
Anyway I'm still alive, and I'm still playing with cars and I hope to see more Subarus and Evos at the 2007 One Lap. We're not sure if we're bringing the same car again but we'll be there regardless.

Thanks for the congratulations guys!
5 years of hard work, sweat, research, development, and money have culminated in 3 One Lap championships and two 5th place finishes. We are still ecstatic about the first win never mind this one. We have no delusions about next year though. If Ron Adee's Super Viprolet comes back tested, tuned, and reliable nobody will have a chance. And if John Hennessey builds a Viper that lasts the week the rest of us will be scrabbling for third.
I'm beginning to wonder if I made a mistake by telling Doug how I would build a Scoob for the One Lap... ;-)
I also had a good conversation with Jon about the suspension is the super Evo.
I better pull a new trick out of my hat for next year or our supercar is going to get pounded by Mid Priced Sedans... ;-)
Seriously though these guys are putting in great efforts. I know how hard it is just to find time to work on the car, nevermind the engineering, the financial backing, teh track testing, or the rest of the aggravation. Luke and Doug, Jon and Martin, and everybody else deserve some real Kudos. In past years this competition has come down to 10ths of a second during a 3 lap time trial!!! Talk about close competition.
Member numbers in 6 digits? It's official I am old...

Low miles - check.
One owner - check.
Driven to church by an elderly woman - this may be a stretch.
Selling to buy a Lotus Exige - possible.
Garage kept - check.
Never seen rain - Tony Swan at Car and Driver did say i dodged the raindrops at road america.
my project right now is trying to figure out my housing situation. i either need to remodel or sell/build.
in the meantime, i'll be getting my scca license and will probably rent a couple cars to see what class i like. plus i get to drive somebody elses car (a subaru) for One Lap '07 and maybe some Time Attacks.

Best way drive someone else's car then you can really drive it like you stole it...lol ;) Then have the owner ride shotgun wearing a diaper...

I have a very stupid and embarassing question for the One Lap Subaru drivers- did you guys disable ABS? (Did you run without it the whole time? Did you turn it on during the rain? Did you run WITH it the whole time?)
sheepishly awaiting a reply

i use abs. watching the world-challenge cars with vs. without, you can see the advantage is with. especially when you have a pad capable of providing enough bite to engage the abs (carbotech xp8). especially helpful in the rain.
