Just got off the phone with Luke.

He won overall again in the afternoon, and Jon had some problems and was quite a bit back.

Jon is in 3rd overall, Luke in 4th and the Civic RIGHT behind in 5th.

Basically with a wet skidpad tomorrow anything can happen, but the civic will be tough to beat and Jon will be at a disadvantage with his tires.

Told that Jeep was sick for what it is. I wonder what is done to it?
shemoves 05-12-2006 04:16 PM

So where does Luke stand at this point as far as when the ENTIRE thing is done? It seems like there is just one event left, the skidpad tomorrow. I don't understand how the scoring works...from the 'standings' link it seems like Luke is winning his class but in 'overall,' is behind the Evo in the same class...I don't get it.

Luke is sitting 1st in class and 4th overall right now. There is one event, the "dry" skidpad left. It looks like rain, so that will be a wet skidpad. With that, it looks like it will be down to the wire as the 2nd through 5th place are VERY close together.

Kevin Jones spoke with me today right after the fire. Apparently he was on fire, literally, for three laps. He finally, after he put in some good laps, pulled over and the fire was put out. Thank goodness no one was injured.
Moving forwardTechnically speaking, no one knows yet what caused the incident. It has been speculated that the oil drain line to the turbo cracked and thats what started this whole mess. No matterjust goes to show you, in racing, anything can happen.
Well the AMS guys offered to help find and fix the issue for Kevin. Man I love true race comradery!
Anyway baring anything terrible, the car will be back on the road for tomorrow. Good luck tomorrow Kev!

Happy and Safe driving to all those One Lap Competitors!

Looks like Mark Davia and Drew Wikstrom are poised to win for the 3rd straight year in the 996TT. Drew is a Subie guy, doesn't post here much (if at all) anymore, but he used to be active in the NESIC Forum. Good guy.

Some pretty damn impressive times from Luke in the wet today, 14sec faster than 2nd place! :eek:

I agree. He was downplaying the Neova's in the wet when I talked to him.

Excellent driving.

No ****! I haven't heard from Drew in a long time here. He went to work for a Porsche shop in CT called Fairfield County Motorsports. "Pilot"

I thought that name looked familiar! Sweet. :)

From the AMS shop. We are holding the #43 car hostage.

CoolRex 05-13-2006 09:09 AM

Anyone know what exhaust Kevin had on his STi? It sounded sick.
dunny 05-13-2006 09:28 AM

Hmm, the scores from the first wet skid pad round are:

Civic Si: 420;
Luke: 360;
Z06: 295;
Jon: 175.

If those results are repeated today, the final standings will be:

2: Civic Si: 6480;
3: Z06: 6440;
4: Luke: 6435;
5: Jon: 6290.

My guess is it will be difficult for either Luke or the Corcorans in the Corvette to catch the Civic, it probably has second sewn up. Luke would need to finish no more than two spots back to beat it in the final standings--he was twelve behind on the first run through--and the Corvette no more than twenty--it was 25 back the last time.

Likewise fifth for Jon is pretty certain, unless he can pull out a significantly better performance. The large spread between him and both Luke and the Corcorans last time, though, doesn't make it likely.

Third will come down to the wire. I wonder if the Z06 has been harder on its tires than the STi, maybe that'll push it down a spot or two relatively. Isn't the big advantage of AWD in endurance racing that it preserves the tread? I also wonder how much easier the Civic's been on its tires than the Corvette or even the STi: less weight, less horsepower; it's probably poised for a great skidpad performance.

My bet's the Civic in second, Luke in third.

Dunny
trhoppe 05-13-2006 10:07 AM

They setup Luke's car last night to be super dorifto mad tyte skidpad master. Don't count on the same result as the first round at least for Luke :)

Congratulations to Luke, Jon, and the others!
racerjon1 05-13-2006 07:39 PM

It is only right to help other competitors, probably the most awesome thing about One Lap is that it is very serious to run up front, but because of the nature of the event and the traveling, we all help each other.. I guess you could call us all rivals, but not bitter. It was cool putting those AMS stickers over the lights of the STi :)

It's funnt, Luke went and put an autocross style alignment on his car, and ours went on a serious diet. Which, thankfully, paid off.

COngrats to the Subarus, and very importantly, Subaru owners. We were the lone Evo, but the Subaru community was well represented. I felt like that scene in Top Gun where Maverick is in the F-14 and all the migs are doing loops behind him.. We might have had more power, but those multitudes of "enemy" back there were nerve-wrecking. Congrats to the Subaru community on having such a strong showing. THREE STi's in the top 10.

We were watching Kevin's in-car last night from VIR, and he wasn't heel-toeing, I asked about it and he said, "Yea I didn't learn that till Putnam." Seriously good effort for such little experience.

During the awards ceremony Brock Yates was poking fun at our Mitsubishi ("Don't they make the Zeros that bombed Pearl Harbor?") and did some light picking at the Subarus as well. I don't know if a four-door sedan can win this thing overall, but I do expect the bar to come up and a lot of both to be in the top 10. I wonder how people will handle that.

Jon

Crash477 05-14-2006 06:56 AM

racerjon1 05-14-2006 08:28 AM

You have to have "high speed experience" to run one lap. Consider it being "solo approved" like PCA and such.

For that, SVRA gives you a "One Lap License"

Jon

some more late night logs i scribbled down while half asleep. i got back home at 3pm, fell asleep, woke up, ordered thai food, then will sleep again. tomorrow i'll go through this thread and actually read your responses. thanks for all the support!!!

May 12 Wow. FTD in both the morning and the afternoon. Everybody keeps giving me props and I dont know what to do about it. I just act embarrassed and say thanks. They act like Im some sort of Jedi Rain Master. Im pretty sure this is Subarus first overall victory ever in the One Lap of America. The Evo held close. He is 3rd overall, Im now 4th. While technically I can get him on the skid pad, its unlikely. Plus the Civic is just 15 points behind me, and he did much better in the original wet skid pad. Nevertheless, Im still hoping for more rain. Hoppe set us straight w/ the correct wet skid pad setup, so Doug and I got back to South Bend and spent an hour in the rain dialing in some rear toe out, and testing in some parking lots. It does feel much better and Im more used to the car now and can really throw it through the skid pad. Hopefully, well significantly improve over our 17th place finish. First in class is pretty much locked up. Overall can vary from 3rd to 5th. Were happy. Late.

May 13 Waz up. Were the winners. 1st in Class, 5th overall. The skid pad dried throughout the day, and they ran reverse order, so we went 4th to last. By then it was pretty much totally dry. They didnt post results so Im not really sure how we did. But I do have a first place and fifth place trophy. Sweet. There were 3 Subarus in the Top Ten, that is awesome. I think everyone will be bringing one next year. Mine is for sale if anyone wants it. Should be on Ebay shortly. All the Subaru guys were the greatest. The DC guys were great. His co-driver is editor of Rides magazine. Theyre both nuts. Lipperini is an animal and set up master. His finish in a stock STi is amazing. Kevin Jones is making wicked HP w/ his Crawford, as seen from his results. He was exactly like me in 2003. Didnt worry about crap, just had fun, and kicked butt. The Schauts were right in the mix as well, but had an unfortunate incident at Road America great guys. Dan Schaut talked me through the rain line at Road America, which resulted in two overall firsts. Thanks Dan! If Im not in a different STi of mine next year, Doug is scheming a little something something himself. Well keep you updated.
