The official One Lap of America *results/updates* thread part 3

RichardM 05-11-2006 04:56 PM

Just to add, that when a car is pushing or understeering on the race track, you early apex. This can occasionally lead to hitting the edge of the track.
trhoppe 05-11-2006 05:07 PM

From the way *I* read it, I caught that "the other cars aren't trying in the turns and are pulling away from him on the straights".

Your explanation puts it in a different light.

My word of "douchebag" was used to describe exactly the whole "have fun while rallying the piss out of the car but not caring about throwing dirt on track" which is again, what i got out of the description.
Of course, a little engine hiccup doesnt stop the boy from covering the track in dirt and putting on a good show.
Anyways, I'll go on to say that it seems like I did misunderstand what he was trying to say, so I'll have to edit at least SOME of my post ;)

Who does that? When a car is understeering, you brake MORE, then late apex to get on teh gas earlier. Early apexing just makes it understeer MORE.

-Tom
In a long race, you are correct as to do otherwise will chew up the front tires. However, in a short 2 lapper, you can get away with it.

I also tend to early apex in my Saab rally car as it understeers most of the time. And it does not have enough horsepower to hurt the front tires.

no wonder ken's car is pushing in the corners. that WRC wing is putting a lot of force on the back wheels. and nothing up front to counter that force.

Ken lost quite a few points while his motor was being replaced after it gave up on the first day of the event. The motor in Ken's car had not been tuched after the Gumball Rally race last year, my mistake :o

They may have had other problems but it was wet at Putnam and MXs no-workie in the wet. Note JonK's placing in all the dry events vs today and the wet skid pad. Also, note his and Hoppe's comments on the MXs on page 1 of this thread.

May 11 Oh yea. Rain. We dominated the morning session. Held FTD until the track completely dried around 11:30. We beat the 1st place Porsche by 23 seconds. In the rain, the 5 STIs were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th. If it wouldve kept raining, that wouldve been sweet. But the sweetest thing is that enough mid-price sedans slipped between us and the Evo that we took over the class lead although the Evo is still ahead overall. Class results and overall results are figured separately, so its possible for us to win the class and be behind in the overall results (go to One Laps website for more scoring information). The afternoon session was dry, and the Evo beat us that thing is fast and theyre getting it dialed in. Jon/Martin and AMS are going to kick butt at the Redline Time Attack. I think this One Lap experience has Doug thinking about building his own shop car for this event and other Time Attack events which Id love to drive. If we drive smart at Road America, I think we can hold onto the lead. Anything can happen, as you can see from today. Were driving through Milwaukee right now and its snowing. I promised myself I wouldnt do this, but I figured out what wouldve been if No Problem went well, and Id be about 125 points out of 1st, easily in 2nd. Suck. Late.

He never really launched it I don't think. Jon is a personal friend of my sponsor and he came over and talked with us. Very upstanding guy and it was a pleasure meeting him for the first time.

Unfortunately I didn't. We had no clue in what order the cars were running and when Jon was up Nature was SERIOUSLY calling :furious: I couldn't hold that piss for the life of me.
esteve 05-11-2006 11:07 PM

Too bad the drag events were cancelled. That would've been an AWDfest. That EVO looks sick! I like the Top Gun theme and the "KEEP CLEAR" lettering is a nice touch. Hopefully Road America is where Luke puts away that pesky Honda in the overall standings.

Luke, you're a great driver so I can only say it's not good to think about what might've been. That's when one becomes greedy and mistake-prone. A class win and a top 10 finish is still mighty impressive!
DrBiggly 05-11-2006 11:36 PM

I autox with Jon all of the time. Not that Doug and Luke aren't great guys (I've talked on the phone with Luke once during last year's OneLap, Doug I've met and is a great guy too) but I end up hanging out with Jon and such a lot more so I'm having quite an awful time rooting for one or the other. Thus I'm rooting for both pretty much.

From Jon's blog about the event the car is doing a 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds and according to the data acquisition should have run about a 10.8 quarter mile.
...On another cool note, looking at the data from Roebling, we were going from 100-128mph in four seconds.. 7mph per second of acceleration in the AMS Evo at triple digit speeds..
Wicked fast EVO for sure. It does suck a lot that the drag events were cancelled. :(

-Biggly
CoolRex 05-11-2006 11:39 PM

That supercharged Civic Si was nothing short of sweet. That car simply sounded wicked and it sounded SICK!

Dr. Biggly I am gonna quote Jon on something he told us....he launched the car and got a 10.8 all while seriously bogging it off the line. If that's the case then all I can say is

Looks like a 1st OVERALL for Luke, with Jon in 3rd place. I think the straights are making up for the poor MX corner grip.

Jon is now in 3rd overall total, with Luke in 6th overall. Luke is poised to climb up big time in overall if the performance is repeated for the afternoon session and Jon would climb to 2nd if the morning is repeated. Luke is still 1st in class though by quite a margin.

No matter what tire, when wet the racing line is like sheer ice (braking zones too as i found out in 2003)
