Highlight for me was when stupid Nascar's stupid "Ace" Jeff Gordon got in the car and HIT THE PIT ROW WALL!!!!!!
What a tool! Ask him to turn more than whatever gentle angle Nascar corners have and BOOM. It was even a left turn for god's sake. One would have assumed prior that if nothing else he could turn a car left, he's had enough practice with the ol' left (I thought).
Anyway, the weekend obviously had many other, better high points but I'm still getting a kick out of this one. Also, I have to give props to Patrick Carpentier for his role in his teams second place finish. It was nice to see a fellow Cannuck do so well.
If you follow road racing at Daytona, that wall gets hit a lot. Dare me to name all the F1 guys that have made bonehead moves, and I bet it wasn't their first few days in the car either.

You're picking on the wrong guy though, Gordon is actually one of the few guys thats a VERY good road racer. If you were ever willing to like a Nascar guys driving ability, he'd be just about on the top of the list.

The guy can drive, he's offered F1 and Cart tests fairly consistently. He doesn't need any help turning both ways.
Blaze 01-30-2007 09:38 PM

Yeah he's easily one of the two, maybe 3, best NASCAR road racers.

Him, Tony Stewart and ... who else? Kasey Mears?

Believe me, I hate nascar with a passion. But Gordie can drive.
cooleyjb 01-30-2007 11:02 PM

Juan Pablo Montoya, Robby Gordon, Boris Said(I know he's not traditional NASCAR but he shows up for every road course now), Earnhardt jr., many of the younger ones who came up with karting backgrounds.

In the future, Michael McDowell after he graduates from ARCA and Busch series. There will soon be an influx of good road course driving circle trackers methinks.
Blaze 01-30-2007 11:04 PM

Montoya was originally a NASCAR guy? I thought he started in Indy and tried NASCAR afterwards?

And Said doesn't count. Said does everything.

I'm talkin about Nextel/Winston Cup Championship competitors, ones that go to EVERY NASCAR race every year. The "Regulars"

Said is just a road course Regular.

yep45 Just naming Nascar regulars.
Blaze 01-31-2007 09:22 AM

oh thats straight. Gotcha.
racerjon1 01-31-2007 09:49 AM

I will voch for Gordon on the pit road.. The Daytona pit exit is a tough one, you get a decent little run out of Pit road, and then you get funneled into a one-lane path with guard rail on both sides.

Cold tires + cool track (pit road doesn't build heat like the track part) = slip, and no room for error. I have seen MANY good drivers smack that wall.

Now that I have had a couple days to go through them, and catch up on sleep.. here are some pictures for your enjoyment.

First up, Koni Challenge race. (not going to be anyone besides me, I was kinda distracted)

Me, between driver-change practice

My co-driver Chris Yano and I, watching final Koni Challenge practice.. the cars hadn't passed tech yet, and this was not a happy time.

Finally, me in the car, through tech.. I would have 15 min of infield driving (to bed the brakes) before I rolled out on the pace lap.. this 15 min was the extent of my time in the car, and in any SRT-4 to that point. (Yes I know.. "Thats what you get for driving an SRT-4.. " I get it.)

Me in the car between driver-change practices. T-minus 40 min to race time.

Driver change practice..

Putting stickers on the car, I was supposed to be in car #13, but once it changed, stickers went on this one (car #73)

Me in the car on the pace lap.

Chris Yano waiting to go into the car.

At speed during the race. No jokes about what actually counts as "speed" please, the lack of practice didn't allow us any time to find out something was wrong with it.

If its pace wasn't rough enough, the transmission went out in spectacular fashion 57 min into the race while going through the tri-oval.

Next Up: The race.
racerjon1 01-31-2007 09:55 AM

The race:

Here it is again, pay close attention, it won't be so shiny after the event.

Turn One, the leaders in traffic, stirring up dust. For those that haven't experienced it yet, or may not get to.. this track gets downright dirty during the race. The bus stop in particular ends up looking more like a country dirt road than a chicane, with what feels like more dirt than racing surface. 70-some-odd cars will do that putting off wheels here and there.

It's not if there will be a problem in the Rolex 24, it's when. 23 hours and 30 min after this impact, the #22 car would cross the finish line and win GT class.

Pontiac vs Porsche vs Daytona Prototype.

Rush-hour at Daytona. Spring break cruising? No.. turn 6 an hour into the Rolex 24.

RedBull, it gives you wings. And really bright graphics.

This one took the cake though.. I didn't even notice that there was a Pontiac emblem on this car till my flash hit it.

I wonder why thay didn't do all the targets in reflective.. might have been overwhelming I suppose.

Midnight in the garden of broken cars. The #89 was undergoing a gearbox transplant, and teammate and driver of the #14 car Cory stops by to check on the progress. While there, fans caught his attention, and got his autograph.

Grand Am rules allow the Daytona Prototypes to run real-time telemetry. This is one of the screens monitoring one of the cars as it circled the 3.56 mile track.

Next up, daybreak.
racerjon1 01-31-2007 10:05 AM

Daylight falls on the speedway. It didn't scare the rain away though, as the showers seemed to be heavier for a while.

Staying up all night finally took its toll on this crew member, and he was the focus of many photographers, including the drivers of the Golden Brothers RX-8.

Told you it wouldn't look as pretty... Juan Montoya must be practicing for his NASCAR season looking at all those tire marks.

A few min left to go, Grand Am officials lining up in pit road.

The 24 Hours is a mix of emotions.

And it's over... the winning DP crosses over the finish line and under the checkered flag.

The Krohn DPs cross the line in formation...

Jon K
Blaze 01-31-2007 10:08 AM

you don't have hi-res pictures you could like... zip up and send to me do ya?
racerjon1 01-31-2007 10:15 AM

All the ones you see there were cropped for the web, some of the brightness/contrast adjusted as well, so the "high resolution" ones might not be as exciting. I took about 3 hours going through my pictures yesterday and getting that set, so going back through might be tough.

Jon K
Blaze 01-31-2007 10:18 AM

eesh.. Well, Thats kewl. I don't need the backstage shots if its too mcuh trouble. Unless they are of the cars with the covers off them. Actually, I would really really like to get hi-res pictures of a few DP cars with tops off them, and maybe as "good as you could get" with the GT class ones. I know they use generally non-removable body panels.

:) reason for that being, I'm going to Chassis Fabrication school pretty soon, would like to see how they do it, for ideas in the future.

And race pics would be nice but...

Like I said, if you wouldn't mind digging through for me, I would be greatly greatly appreciative. But I certainly wouldn't ask you for a 3-hour dive through em. lol Unless ya wanted to! ;)
racerjon1 01-31-2007 10:19 AM
you sir, are a saint.
If by "saint" you mean "Someone who's potential ride for the 24 broke on Thursday so he didn't get to drive and put his free time and hard card to good use", then yea.. I guess so. :D

I had to stay focused somehow, not driving and just watching racecars drives me nuts.

Jon K
Blaze 01-31-2007 10:20 AM

And I don't particularly care about ones that are adjusted for brightness and stuff.... I can do that meself.
Blaze 01-31-2007 10:21 AM

Dude I would kill to be able to drive... ANYTHING in the 24. For anyone.

And I'm sure most people on here would agree.

The hard part would be to get someone to take me seriously enough to let me prove I could do it. LOL
racerjon1 01-31-2007 10:27 AM

Driving is sort of easy, (The more $ you bring, the more people "trust" you.) driving for cheap(er) is hard, driving for free is near impossible.

I drove in the 24 hours in 2002, but haven't been back since. When the "real" prototypes left, the field dwindled, (84 cars entered in 2002, 44 cars in 2003) That made rides tough to find. The field was back up over 70 on the pre-entry list this year, and with more cars, comes more chances for less expensive seats.

Blaze, you have a PM btw.

Jon K
Blaze 01-31-2007 10:29 AM

lol. That kinda reminds me of that arguement that they should stop paying NFL and NBA players millions upon millions of dollars to play. Give an average Joe 200,000 dollars to play and he will play his ass off.

I would take it 100% serious if I was even considered to be "maybe put on the list" to have an audition. LOL
cooleyjb 01-31-2007 10:57 AM

Truly, all you need to do is get a license and bring 25,000 and you'll have a seat for the 24. However there is no guarantee you get to drive, the car might break before your turn. You break it you buy it. So you could add another 50K to the weekend very quickly.

There were seats available up until the week before the race this year. Some teams will look for higher qualifications than others because they want to win. Other teams are using you to pay for their weekend.
Blaze 01-31-2007 11:02 AM

Yeah, Well to b e completely honest. I kindof expected that kind of stuff to happen.

If I had 25k to throw away, I'd do it prolly...

But... Meh. I'm more interested in someone that'd be a bit more ... say... amiable???? to the driver in question?

Like, I understand them not wanting to use the 24 as your audition, thats a big, not to mention perilous race as far as the car goes. But, y'know, try out for them in say, practice... to be one of their A-drivers instead of a 25th String driver y'know?

And I know for that kind of thing to happen you'd either have to really be badass at the "audition" or you'd have to bring a lot of ...documented? experience to the table. /shrug

Jon
racerjon1 01-31-2007 11:36 AM

Rides in this years Rolex went for as little as $15k (advertised, there was at least one team there whos guys got together and did it themselves for much less) They went for as high as $75k that I know of, and probably more.

You could have paid for a ride as late as Friday.

The thing is these teams are in the business of selling rides. There might be a try out, but it will be in testing, and it is still going to cost a good bit. Chances are, unless you crash it, they will accept your money.

Teams go like this
1) All buy-a-ride drivers. Owner is going to make $ selling seats. Not unlike disney-land, but more control than space mountian. sometimes, if you already know the owner well you might get on this one for cheap, if you are proven fast. If the car doesn't make the race, then the owner can't make $, so a faster driver for cheap might get in.

2) Owner as driver, three or four drivers bringing $, paying for the event. You might get a little wiggle room on a ride like this if you come in with credentials, but don't expect it.

3) Owner driving, one hired driver, 2 people paying the expenses. (This is when the owner wants to make the field but might not be fast enough.) Use the hired gun (hired meaning maybe paying, but maybe free) driver to make sure the car gets in the field.

4) Factory driver, or drivers, and then one or two very fast, very well funded drivers. In this case the driver(s) paying are not just paying to keep the team afloat, but for the chance to drive with real pros, and have a shot at winning. You will have needed to driven with types 1-3 and been very fast to even be considered for this type of ride.

5) Full-on hired team. These are the names you know, the people that win, the teams that run up front consistantly. Teams get sponsorship, hire drivers. There might have been a half-dozen of these at the 24 Hours. The only GT teams that were like this were the GXP-Rs.

This of racing like baseball, with each step costing $. (From little league through the majors being series, and try-out camps as tests) If you are good enough in little leage, you get to pay to play middle school ball, if you are good enough there, you pay to play in high school.. good enough in the minors you might get to pay for a try-out in the majors.. good enough there.. you get to pay to play in the big leagues. Lead a team to the playoffs.. then you might get considered for a paying job.

Welcome to motorsports, where supply and demand of the chance to drive awesome machinery is in full effect.

Jon K
Blaze 01-31-2007 12:28 PM

Hehehe Which is why I fully plan to field my own cars. Maybe not Le Mans, or the Rolex 24 within the near future.

But I plan on opening my own shop, and fielding my own cars in ... HOPEFULLY the GT Class... some day. Or atleast something near it.

Still lookin for employee's. ;) lol Got a few positions filled... lookin for more***(edit). hahhah

EDIT : So so tired... I said I was lookin for me. Oi. lol

Thanks. It's an education that comes from, uh.. "living the dream." (or so I am told)

The thing is, it isn't just Endurance racing, it's all of it. There isn't a series on the planet you can't buy your way into, and every series has a substantial amount of paying drivers.
