3,000mi worth of blue painters tape? part 2

mikkellucci 05-11-2006 12:43 PM

holy sh!!!t, the above pic is great! nice tape job!!
buzz wrecker 05-11-2006 06:56 PM

so exactly how long did it take to tape that car up anyway?
dawiyo 05-11-2006 07:59 PM

Back in Feb I drove from Maryland to California where I am now. My front end is f-ed up. I wish I had put a bra on it and I had every plan to for the trip however never got around to it. I do regret that now.

^^^ WTF... that's so pitiful. I can not believe how bad the paint just flakes off these cars! A co-worker has a Forester and same problem, front bumper is all flaked off.

As expensive as it is, the clear bra is becoming very attractive
dodiox 05-11-2006 08:15 PM
I'm going to be leaving for a 3,000mi trip tomorrow nite and was wondering what kind of tape I should ust for the front of my STi. Painters tape? The front end is flawless right now and I perfer to keep it that way no matter how retarded it looks.
GOD are you serious?!!!!
WOW
black06wagon 05-11-2006 08:33 PM

i dunno what kinda tape you should get, but @#$%@ I wish I'd thought of that before completely destroying the paint on my bumper and hood roadtripping this winter.

 good idea
so exactly how long did it take to tape that car up anyway?
20 minutes the leading edge of the wrc wing was taped also
jandree22 05-11-2006 09:32 PM

So I'm thinking to myself, what makes a direct 3,000 mile cross-country trip so much more dangerous with bugs and rocks than 3,000 miles of your every day highway driving, which is very easy to accumulate in a few months? Not trying to come off as a jerk with this question, but what really makes the need for this for a straight trip but not other times?

its the time span man. i see what ur saying, but 3000miles in a few months, and 3000 miles in a few days is a big difference.
elsanto 05-12-2006 03:21 PM

good job to you man. this is a great idea. definitely get a clear bra for long term.. but even then there are spots it misses. subaru paint is notorious for chipping im on my 3rd hood (dont ask) and its 3 months old and has tons of chips already.
DUC748 05-12-2006 11:38 PM

Check it...I saw a bright yellow NSX with black aftermarket spoiler and wheels rolling down 695 tonight with bright blue painters tape across the whole front end. After this thread I had to bust out laughing.

DUC i just saw a blue NSX with the blue taping....thats kinda weird.
CarbineReloaded 05-13-2006 01:09 AM

so why not run a OEM bra for the car?
SparkysJDMSpeedWagon 05-13-2006 01:45 AM

Why not just drive the car, for a change? How is it "pride of ownership" to let the car sit in your driveway, and only accumulate 8500mi in 3 years? Or do you, literally, just wake up, drive to work, drive home from work, then sit around at home and then go to sleep? I couldn't do it, man...I enjoy my car too much to do that. I'm driving cross-country this fall (Seattle to Kentucky, then from there probably to Florida panhandle), I doubt I'll take any of your precautions. My '04 with 27,000mi already has enough chips in the front that I don't get too paranoid about it.

Maybe he has a nice bike that he chooses to ride in his non-commuting moments. ;)
jetfan8178 05-13-2006 11:43 AM

You should have called me, I could have had the clear bra installed for 200...

Where are you going BTW

Constant barrage of road debris in a short amount of time. 3,000 miles of highway in one sitting does alot more damage than 3,000 miles over a couple months.
CarbineReloaded 05-13-2006 12:04 PM

Not to mention hitting a rock or bug at 35-45 mph vs 75-85mph.
gingertooth 05-13-2006 12:23 PM
whats the difference between a long trip or a short trip to work........ if chips are going to happen they are going to happen anytime not just on long trips.....
hell, wonder why he didn't ever think of that. guess once he realizes this smart comment he will be leaving the gay tape all year round.
IllNastyImpreza 05-13-2006 01:56 PM

they have clear bra spray @ autozone...its like a wax...just stronger, and it eventualy wears off
gingertooth 05-13-2006 02:43 PM

i got to check that stuff out.
johnnywu 06-13-2006 02:46 PM

i just taped up my car for the 3k mile trip from boston to cali

i used the 3m low adhesive (pretty damn expensive)
the wider 2" tape stayed on find
the thinner 1" didnt do so well when wet

taking it off was nothing and worked like a charm

i got a ding and some scratches where i didnt tape up or where the tape fell off due to moisture, nothing noticable where it was taped up.

now i have to wash my car

STix66 06-13-2006 03:42 PM

Man I hope you don't park that car on the streets in Chinatown. Crazy skinny streets down there and like all cities, people use the bumper on your car as a warning to stop backing up and then oops no paint on the front bumper.

I wont even take my STI into the city unless we park it in my wifes garage.
DieselClown 06-13-2006 05:26 PM

LMAO! I thought you needed 3,000 miles of painters tape.
WejR20X 06-14-2006 01:35 AM

looks like i'll be doing this in august on my road trip back to school
silent_rob_95 06-15-2006 12:22 AM

Man I hate it when people assume no one drives their car.... I drive my STi whenever I get the chance. Lol at this same old comment when someone actually tried to take care of their car.
WRXedUSA 07-08-2006 05:00 PM

I just did 1500mi.

Simple, don't tailgate people or hit rubber carcasses on the road.

file_id 07-08-2006 05:28 PM

Duplicolor has a spray on bra now. Anyone try it?
stierzy34 07-08-2006 05:59 PM

at least you don't have an EVO and have to drive 3000 miles without cruise control
shemoves 07-08-2006 06:05 PM

I did it on a trip...you'll see the diff it makes when you take the tape off. Yah, blue masking tape. Since the trip is so long, you will also want to bring extra tape so you can make spot repairs. Don't forget the side windows and possibly the top edge of the scoop. Last, but not least, wash the car before taping.

I haven't tried it, however it is an amazing product from what I've seen and would def. be willing to give it a shot next time out. + this thread does well too

TTT!

hahaha...kinda funny that you'll clock almost as many miles in this trip as you have every year for the past two years...
