I work a ton this week so here are my picks before I leave on Friday morning.
1.) J.Montoya (has something to prove after stewards shafted him)
2.) K.Raikkonen (should've beat Juan, but McLaren has no team orders)
3.) F.Alonso (quick, but not quick enough)
4.) J.Button (good track for Honda power and has a car that is improving)
5.) G.Fisichella (again slower than his teammate)
6.) J.Trulli (qualifies high and fades a bit)
7.) N.Heidfeld (qualifies low and fights back up)
8.) D.Coulthard (more points for the Scot)
Jon

I'm worried... my picks are nearly identical to Jon's...does the ground feel cold to anyone else? ;)

Gettin' in the picks early? Okie, I'll give.
P1. Kimi (Umm... 'cause he's rulin' it?)
P2. JPM (It's gonna be tough with a bad quali position, but the McLaren has good pace.)
P3. Jenson (I think he can do it...as long as he doesn't hit any walls.)
P4. Schumi Sr. (Ferrari showed good pace, but I don't think the Scuderia are gonna luck out as much as they did in Canada.)
P5. Alonso (R25 is quick, but I think the other cars are catching up.)
P6. Webbo (Solid qualifier, Williams lacks pace.)
P7. Quick Nick (Solid racer.)
P8. Fisi (Poor guy.)

I'm going out on a limb for my picks this week.
1. JPM - breaks out of his brain farts and bad luck and gets the W
2. Alonso
3. Raikkonen
4. MS
5. Button
6. Fisi
7. Trulli
8. Nick the Quick
I'm actually going to the race for the first time since 2000. Look for three old guys who've had a little too much beer.
Can't wait to hear the scream!

Kevin, no Kimi in the top 8? Well, I am going to have to disagree;).
1. Kimi- taking care of business once again.
2. JPM- 1 mistake will cause him from going from P1 to P2.
3. Michael S.- the first of the red cars(they've been strong in North America).
4. Alonso- more reserved after his wall of champions tap.
5. Trulli- Toyota in true form
6. Button- will start from pit, move up all the way 6th for points.
7. Woobens- struggling qualifying will put him out of points, but he'll find his way in.
8. D.C.- Red Bull in the points.

McLaren has a really strong car this year, and they've had some odd misfortunes, but nowhere near as bad as they've had with the past few years. Ferrari is there simply because they are Ferrari, and they run strong in N.A. Alonso will be there, as well as Trulli and Button. D.C. is a former McLaren driver, so I'm a bit biased with that.
Now with Ralf, I think he may be a bit cautious after last years shunt. I'd pick Heidfeld, 'cuz he's pretty solid. If I had to pick which Williams, it'll be Heidfeld. He's impressed me the past season or two.
Mika(no hard feelings, right?;) )

My Picks!

Wish I was going this year... haven't been since 2000. :( Being at the race beats watching it on the boob tube everytime. My recomendation for you attendees: bring or buy a decent stop watch (cheap ones are at sporting goods stores, and radio shack), so you can "gap" cars to see if one guy is actually catching another, or time various folks laps to see how much faster some folks are. Enjoy!
Here's my picks:

Kimi He clicks off fast laps like a metronome!
Juan - Nice to see him comfortable and fast again!
Fernando - The infield will eat Renault's tires, and the Mercedes is stronger.
Giancarlo - Nice to see him up to speed... But Fernando can be a little faster.
Michael - Ferrari Bridgestone is a very stout race package. Look for late race strength from the red cars.
Rubens
Jenson - Button set some impressive lap times in Canada B4 he tossed it off...
Nick - He is very impressive, and Indy will reward him.
Well I guess I'm not getting anything done tomorrow. Canada GP rebroadcast is tomorrow night as well, 9 PM PST. Missed the CBS coverage so I have to see that too. :D
Here are my motorsport.com picks:
US;
K.Raikkonen - Only mechanical or driver error can stop him right now.
F.Alonso - Back on track
J.Montoya - If he pulls his head out
G.Fisichella - He can't have bad luck at every race
J.Trulli - Yep
M.Schumacher - Lucky to be second at Canada
N.Heidfeld - Start fast, fade late
R.Barrichello - Start slow, fast late

But the good news, he walked away under his own power.

Where did you hear that? They were definitely too low early in the first session but it seemed like they resolved that. It didn't look like he was scraping anymore than normal when the failure happened. And Zonta definitely wasn't scraping when his right rear failed. And considering that they put Zonta's car back together and sent him out at the end of the session I think that tire issues are more likely.
I really do need to remember to add extra time to my F1 recordings though since I missed the last 20 minutes of practice because of the delays. Would have been nice to see Scott Speed actually turn that quick lap that he did.

Looks like it was the tires. Michelin told the teams to put more air in and pulled some of the cars. Machett (sp) was talking about the huge pressure differences between oval and road racing and Indy is a difficult compromise. Trulli did a couple of late laps.

Reading The Tea Leaves Friday Afternoon...

Practice sessions are like reading tea-leaves, but McLaren, Renault, Ferrari, Toyota, Williams, Red Bull are all showing strength on Friday. I didn't mention BAR... I expect them to be strong here, but they did not turn fast times today...
Indy is more of an engineering track, than a drivers track. Historically, Indy has rewarded some agressive drivers, by enabling on track passing. But car set-up is key, because if a car has the wings layed down too much, a driver loses too much time in the Mickey Mouse infield to be able to run down his opponent once they hit the straight.
Red Bull is rolling in with a new engine upgrade this weekend. They really needed it, looking at their laptimes during the race at Canada. Today's practice sessions show that they may be in the hunt for points here at Indy. If you picked DC for lesser points, you may be well rewarded. (Nice to see Scott Speed doing well in the cockpit... faster than Klein in both sessions, and faster than Klein and Coulthard in the first session last Friday at Canada.)
On Sunday, tire wear should be an issue. The track will change as it rubbers in, but look for folks to be concerned about their rear tires. Indy will leave a driver vulnerable if he drives his tires off, because it is not difficult to pass on track here.
Michelin said they will expect to have an analysis of Ralph's tire failure done by tomorrow morning.

Just watched an interview with Ralf and he said he'd be very surprised if the Michelin drivers will even run in the race the way things are looking now. Hardly any Michelin-equipped cars did a timed lap in the 3rd free practice session, and according to a Michelin spokesperson they haven't figured out the cause of the failure yet. Sounds pretty serious.

Speed is reporting 7 Michelin teams will not race unless a chicane is installed..
In a way I'm diggin this. Anything to upset Tony's apple cart is fine by me.
Next year just move the USGP north about 6.5 hours to a real road course like Road America and I will be a happy camper. :D

Michelin, in talks with the FIA, are looking at the feasibility of flying in a completely new batch of tyres from its French base for use in the race, but this requires authorisation from the FIA and agreement from Bridgestone.
.
.
.
We fully support Michelin in this situation, and in the efforts they are making to best resolve it. They are flying out different tyres to use in tomorrows race the same that were used in Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix, explained Briatore. The authorisation to use them has not yet been granted, but if that were not given, we would not compete in tomorrows race. The safety of our drivers remains our number one priority.

Michelin and the teams they supply have a lot of leverage with the FIA in this matter. Considering that there has to be a minimum of 8 cars on the grid for the GP to even start. Now how many teams does Bridgestone supply to?
| bal00 | 06-19-2005 03:35 AM |
Three.
On a related note:
The option of using the Barcelona tires imported from Clermont-Ferrand has in effect been abandoned. Teams decided that they had no real information about whether they would last, and also there was no firm knowledge about what penalties might ensue if they were used, although it is understood that the FIA had informally suggested that something like a 10 second stop-and-go rather than exclusion.
The seven Michelin teams have agreed that they will only race in the USGP if a chicane is fitted before the banked Turn 13 overnight.
However, the practicalities are insurmountable in terms of designing a chicane, building it, and ensuring that it is safe. Changes to tracks go through a strict homologation process. All those jobs are the responsibility of Charlie Whiting.
As of 8 p.m. Saturday night, nothing was being done to put the process into motion, and we understand that while Bernie wants it to happen, there are too many hurdles to be overcome in terms of safety. We understand that Whiting has resisted pressure from Ecclestone to make it happen, comewhat may.

This is gonna be interesting. Maybe we'll see them racing rebtal Neons or bicycles? :)

Chicane? Maybe they should just slow the hell down themselves.
I can't believe they even have the nerve to suggest that when it is all because of the incompetencey of Michelin.

Sounds like FIA has told Michelin and the assorted teams to go and fly a kite.
It never should have been at indy in the first place.

I think the problem with the other tracks is making them meet safety regulations. I heard it would be near impossible to make many of those other venues conform to FIA regulations. Any word what the teams are going to do this afternoon? I guess we'll find out soon enough...

it isn't just safety standards that they need to meet. The FIA stipulates certain requirements for Pit and Media ammenenities. There has been talk of bringing the GP to Laguna Seca, the track could be made to meet the Safetey requirements, but the Pits were another story, and the owners of the track haven't had the capital for it. Maybe Fontana Speedway would have a good shot at it. maybe.

No F1 USGP???

Tyre issues with Michelin may not allow them to race today!!!! OMG this is wild. It seems that Michelin will not allow teams to run the tyres they have due to 2 crashes during qualifying last week. This could certainly make for an interesting event- and not necessarily in a good way :(
| Arnie | 06-19-2005 01:41 PM |
Anyone know if CBS is broadcasting F1 today? I caught the last few laps last week and was surprised the race was even broadcast on free TV ( i don't have SPEED).

Michelin, not Goodyear
| psg | 06-19-2005 01:44 PM |
Nope, no CBS today. CBS is showing the Champ Car race at Portland this morning, though.
| Arnie | 06-19-2005 01:44 PM |
thanks! Ah well.
| StuBeck | 06-19-2005 01:44 PM |
No, they are not.
| MK19_ | 06-19-2005 01:54 PM |
Now they are saying some drivers may pit in protest to running on what apparantly seems to be unsure/unsafe tyres.

This is such a tough call, but my g/f brought up a good point- because 14/20 teams are Michi, what's to say that Bridgestone can't (won't) suffer the same fate?
On the other hand, it's such a tough call when you're dealing with a potential deadly safety issue... On the OTHER OTHER hand, Ferrari can just say "F YOU!" We're ready to go, and if you have to take turn 13 at 100mph, tough ****- see you at the finish line!
Heh - maybe this will be the race where passing will be more numerous than NASCAR
