will do scott, Lake Lanier is stunning, good fun on a power boat too. :D
Hi Arnie, the steering rack mod is very simple. You need to measure the bump steer present and then move the rack acordingly, so you cant just say 5mm is the right packer thickness, you have to change that value car to car, its going to be somewhere between 2mm and 5mm on most Clasics.
You have a packing strip that sits between the rack and the subframe to lower it, this sits directly under the U clamp area, and then you have 4 washers of the same thickness that space out the U clamps that hold the rack in place, 2 per u clamp. It's really that simple.
Thanks jblaine. :)

John-
After having watched your videos over and over looks like I'll be able to make one of my own starting later this summer. I'm moving to Germany and bringing our pair of Subarus. So, if you see a white USDM STi with gold wheels...
I could even do a chase cam video of your STi...if you slow down enough!

USDM spec STi at the ring, that will be fun! :D Prepair for a shock when you realise how much fuel is going to cost you though. ;) What a great car to use in Germany! :)
OK, the latest update on the video. We have pretty much finished it this last weekend, i am back down to London to do the finishing touches this coming weekend and then we will be ready for production, the cover graphics are being put together right now, those should be ready for final proofing after the weekend too.
We have managed to find a company that can duplicate this is both PAL and NTSC formats on DVD at an afordable price (that was a real struggle to find), so we will be able to release this in DVD format after all. :)
So early next week i should be able to give a final update with content, delivery, ordering and price information for you.
Thanks for your patience, i had no idea the amount of work involved but it's been very interesting and a lot of fun learning how to produce a Video. I hope you guys enjoy it.

I may be shipping a few to Aus already so it might be posible to send them together for distribution down there if i twist an arm of two, which could help with costs. :)

I hope you get this distributed here soon; it would be a great thing to study as a "warmup" before the 24 hrs of Nurburgring event in June, (and of course to help me re-live my own one-time driving experience there). Boris Said will be driving the Factory BMW M3GTR again this year with Hans Stuck....I'm trying to find out where I can follow it live on the net. Any ideas? That strikes me as something you would know!

Thanks chaps.
Yes, Jamie will be distributing them for me. :) What I will do is setup an email address for you to contact me by with any questions plus your details, and then pass the shipping info on to Jamie, that way I'll do most of the admin work and Jamie can deal with shipping from a single US location.
I think doing it that way will be the best at keeping costs down and keeping the workload manageable for Jamie as she has a hectic enough life as it is. :)
For Australia I have a friend in Sydney who is happy to accept a box and distribute a few for me. I hadn't considered anywhere but the UK and USA before so not sure if people would be interested down there to need anything more? To be honest I am not sure how popular this is going to be.
The DVD is going to be produced in both USA compatible NTSC and also UK and Australia compatible PAL formats. Finding a way to do both has been one of the difficult things to arrange but we have that in place now.
Regarding the 24hr race, you can follow the race online at http://adac.24h-rennen.de/ it's looking likely I will be there this year.
Sounds like you had a great time Quentin, you can't beat blasting down a rally stage at speed, it's quite an experience. :)

Hi guys, sorry for the delay in updating this, but the telecoms in my city set on fire last sunday and all broadband connections have been down until today. :o
The great news is we have finished the editing and production this last weekend. :D Phew!!
The plan now is to produce the DVD master in PAL format first (thats how the AVID produces the master), which should be happening tomorrow then this will be sent to the duplicators which should have the DVD's back with me mid next week in PAL format. We then have to run a re-import and conversion to NTSC, which will produce an NTSC master for us for duplication, so NTSC is going to lag a little behind the PAL versions going on sale, hopefully by a very short amount of time.
We want to make sure we get some stock before offering these for sale so if we hit any unexpected problems we wont have let people down with promised dates, taken orders then kept you waiting etc...
We have the artwork for the DVD due for completion this weekend for the DVD cover, this is being produced by an award winning art director (my brother :D), the prototypes look great. :D
I am now looking at building a website page to show you what is included in the video and we will have a short trailer so you can take a look at the type of footage and features we have included. The DVD is 1 hour and 33 minutes long so a lot of footage in there with lots of diferent ideas and features to enjoy.
Almost there now. :D The DVD is called...............

Actually I'm not sure what the source was; got them from a friend after a convoluted mixup of wrong pads being supplied for a stock WRX.
I'm guessing/hoping they'll be more generally available soon; I'll see if I can get more specifics...

Hi Guys.
You can buy EBC pads from http://www.ebcbrakes.com/WhereToBuy.html
Make sure you specify Ceramic Red, just incase there is some old stock still circulating.
We hit a problem with the DVD export, the editing suit we have been using was only ever used for Broadcast quality BetaCam tapes as its used to produce TV programms, so when we came to export in DVD format we found a bug in the software. That has been resolved now and i hope to have the first batch of PAL DVD's within 2 weeks, shortly followed by NTSC. Sorry for the delay.
I'll put up ordering info when we have the stock available, Jamie will be able to supply you brchco12.
I was at the Nurburgring a couple of weeks ago and met one of the FHI factory test drivers, the driver of the video clip of the Spec C doing 8:06 thats on the net actually. Really nice guy. He was there testing the new Spec C that is being launched in June. Quite a few interesting changes to be found on that car.

Faster then the Evo8 steering ....
btw .... did you ever find out what the less well funded Nurburgring 24 hours race teams use for tires ...

My RA came with a 13:1 quickrack as standard (same as 22B). that was 2.25 turns lock to lock. It's perfect for a road car. I had to get that reconditioned so installed a normal RA 15:1 ratio rack whilst the other was being reconditioned and didnt like it as much. So it should be good, if Gary and Pat are using it then it should be good quality. I wouldnt go faster than a 2.25 turn rack on the road though, well i might, but i think most people wouldnt like it.
No idea on the tyres yet, i'll probably find out in June. ;)

I met him just as i was set to leave and was leading a convoy of cars so couldnt wait unfortunately. He had a bunch of japanese journo's with him so we only chated for around 20 minutes. He did give me his email addy though and took mine, so hopefully i can arange to meet up with him next visit.
| Arnie | 04-30-2004 03:25 PM |
That would be great if you guys could arrange a meet up next time he's testing. Would interesting to swap and compare driving tech on the Ring with an FHI tester! You have to sneak the camera on your car somehow for that!
| johnfelstead | 04-30-2004 05:26 PM |
 I dont think so, they find a camera, you get a season ban!
Subaru have just built a test centre in nurburg to base the test cars from, so i expect they will be doing more there from now on. Aparantly they have been sending Subaru's to the ring since 1992. There seems to be a lot of new buildings going up, a new Jaguar test centre was opened since my last visit there last year.
One downer of the weekend was that Sabine has closed her bar/restaraunt as the landlord put her rent up by a huge amount, so she told him where to go. :o She is now working in the pistenclaus, her mum owns that. Great food and drink in there. So if you want to meet Sabine thats where you will find her if she isnt driving the ring taxi. She is doing some test driving for Subaru too, they built the new test centre in her back garden. :D

Banned! okay, that's right, that would not be good.
Yeah, I was looking at some old ads/brochures from the early 90's for the V3/4's and they had test photos from the ring on there. Testing at the ring really is now de rigeur for most car companies with a performance model its seems. but it really is the best place to test the extremes of chassis dynamics.
Unfortuanate about Sabine's gasthaus. It seems that place is as much a part of the ring pilgrimage as the ring itself!
We look forward to your stories about mixing it up with the Subaru Test Drivers John!

John, can you elaborate a bit on the STi's ride height. You touched on it briefly earlier in the thread, but i was curious to know how low is too low and what is your system of measuring ride height. I know it has something to do with the roll center but I wouldn't know how to tell I have gone to far unless i tested it. I have a USDM STi. Glad to see the thread still going, your input is always appreciated John.

oh, i think that would be easy. In the game when you crash and burn you press reset. In real life you tend to die. So the fear/reality factor is not quite the same. :D
Those graphics do look amazing on the video, it really does look like the track, i knew precisely where they were and what was coming next. Mind Blowing really.

Wduvall - that's my server - lemme check it out.
Update: use this domain instead of the IP: www.purelyhip.com with the same directories and it should work. When I have time tonight, I'll work up a new list of links that John can post.

Seems like the server is working now with the domain name instead of the IP, although i havn't tried to download today using the IP.
Here are all the links for ease of downloading. I havn't verified they all work, just the first one.

Hi Guys, sorry for not being around much lately, i have been away from home for weeks now without net access.
As Mako says we have been having a nightmare of it trying to get this onto DVD, we have had to reduce the number of laps on the DVD to get this to fit, which unfortunately meant a new menu had to be created and then the whole content had to be re-rendered. We are doing this fitting it in around the normal TV production editing the system is used for, so every change takes a long time to make because of access, there have been a few other issues such as new babies ariving for the editor and menu creator too, so time just seems to disapear right now. I hope to be able to give you some news very soon now, diesel is doing a new export this weekend so hopefully that fits onto the master DVD. Fingers crossed.
I have been out to the ring again recently, and for the first time i didnt get to drive. Instead i spent a few days helping in the pits on one of the front running BMW's at the 24hr race. My friend Gareth Lloyd was driving in car 52, the M3 GTR of Moore International Motorsport. That was quite an experience to say the least, very tiring when you are awake for the whole race plus all the time it takes at the start and finish, qualifying etc. but quite unlike any other races i have been a part of, the tension at the end was unreal in particular.
The race and qualifying is something else, with 270 cars attempting to qualify for 230 start spots. Willie Moore, the lead driver qualified the car in 26th spot with a time of 9:16, thats for the Northern loop and half of the GP circuit combined. To start the race they have four pace cars with the field split in four, so every minute you have a rolling start with a pack of 60 cars blasting past the pits, it has to be the largest saloon car race in the world in terms of number of cars running on the track. The oficial website is http://adac.24h-rennen.de/index.asp?sprache=eng&content= if you would like to take a look, there is some video footage on there including an interview with Willie at the end of the race.
It was quite a lot of fun in the pits during the race, there was always something going on, with so many cars you share the pit garage (if you are lucky enough to have one) and refueling pump with 4 or 5 other cars, we shared with some other BMW teams and were using the pit garage Shuey was using just 2 weeks before in the GP, his tyre marks were still there from the pit stops. :D Next to us was the works Opel DTM team, they were quite amusing to watch as they went about destroying the cars in the changeable conditions, they went through 3 front end assemblies with one car crashing out perminantly. To start with it was a case of german eficiency as they unclipped the wrecked front ends and clipped new ones in place, but after a while they ran out of new parts so were franticly atacking the removed parts with hammers, saws and tape to make a workable set again.
Weather was very tricky, with periods of wet then dry then wet again, of course it also changed around the circuit too, so tyre choice was very dificult, Gareth was caught out during the night on slicks when it threw it down, but managed to bring it back to the pits in one piece for wets, tens of cars didnt that lap including one of the Opels.
The team finished the race 15th overall and 2nd in A6 class, just 4 laps behind the surviving works Opel DTM car, the winning team from last years race. A6 is one of the hardest contested classes with works suported teams including a factory Honda NSX so finishing 2nd in class for the second year running is quite an achievement. The race was won overall by the factory BMW M3 DTM team, gaining a 1-2.
I should have some great behind the scenes photos soon, but for now here are a few of the car in action from the oficial website photos.

One of the nice moments of the weekend was meeting up with Phil Bennet who was driving another M3. Phil holds the production car lap record at the 'ring and has been a works BTCC driver for the last few years. I know him from when we used to do trackdays together before he signed for the BTCC. He asked me why i wasnt driving a Subaru in the race, which made me realise there wasnt a single Impreza in the worlds greatest saloon car race which it would be ideal for, especially in mixed weather conditions. I need to find a lot of money to fix that one, any offers? ;)

Great stuff John.
Amazing race for sure. Gosh, that's a huge grid of cars.
Subaru for course would be perfect. How about a stock USDM STi? :)
pics above; I was trying to figure out what those side square thingys were on each front wheel/bonnet. Last pics show it as some sort of light, however are those very bright? Used mostly to ID the car maybe? Glad it was a safe race.
I use to be involved in the FIA GT series when I lived in Anderstorp, Sweden. (marshall, pace car etc..)Those races were alot of fun and about 3 hrs long, which I thought was a long endurnace race:) Only imagine what 24 hrs would be like!

They look like dual lens driving lights; there's a row of 4 in the middle of the bumper too.
Top photo they're all covered, and all look alike. Bottom photo looks like bottom bulb lit on the fenders, none on the bumper; you can see - I think :) - the dual lenses on the bumper array.

USDM STi would be perfect in a groupN type class i think, no idea on the rules for the race car spec wise though, but a 2.5 STi would be ideal for endurance and good torque which is what you need in a race like the 24hrs.
The square lights are very bright gas discharge Xenon units, they have the lenses covered during the first daylight session to protect them from stone damage which is why they look blue in some photos. They were used as daylight running lights too, with the top two on the front fenders kept switched on to help the slower cars see you aproaching.
The rules allow you to run 8 lights on the car, so there are 6 Xenon units and one of the stock headlamps of the twin setup being used. Thats why the headlamp unit is masked off with sponsor decals.

Hey John: Did you get to hang out any with Hans Stuck and Boris Said, with the Schnitzer BMW team? They finished 1-2 obviously, but in speaking to Boris just afterward, he was telling crazy tales of he and Hans taking a lap in a tractor the night before the race, and stopping along the way to hang out with the campers and drinkers all around the course. Sounds like a real blast of a race to be at. Boris it's way better than Lemans, even. It's his favorite event anywhere in the world.
Yes, you need to enter an Sti next year.:)
Those in-car videos up on the nurburgring.de site from this year's race are just SICK. The Jaguar one, especially.
Glad you had fun.

John:
About a year ago, on page 15 of this thread, there was an interior shot of your car with an electronc display showing a top speed. What is this device, were can I find out more about it? (URL)?
I want to keep the dash some what subtle.
Thanks for your help and the best and longest runing thread in all of Christendom. (Don't know of any Islamic or Budhist Imprezza fora)

The display unit is a SECS made by PSI3, you can find the info on it at http://www.psi3.co.uk/ It's a great piece of kit and has dealers in the USA.
Those are the light units satrya, they are very bright!
I didnt get to say hello to that many people really, one of the guys i know from the UK Subaru boards was working on the works Audi's and i didnt get to say hi to him, i totally forgot he was involved in that program till i made it home.
I did see plenty of drunk Germans in the campsites though, as i had to drive past them late each night during the lead up to the race. It was a case of slow down and dodge the man with the burning stick stagering up the road every few hundred yards.

I was impressed Donut King (Australia) sponsored a couple cars and their Aussie drivers at the 24hr. race. My wife says they don't really even advertise in Australia. I'd have to say the few DK thick shakes I had when I went back to get married were very tasty during an Oz summer (Feb). I also liked that one car (Honda Civic?) had a green laser light moving around in the sky at night... the strobing blue lights were fairly common, probably to catch the attention of slower cars. I'm going to try and make it to as many days I can of the final 3 full weekends. Hopefully next time I come back to Germany I'll be earning enough to afford the rate and deposit on a Porsche 911 Turbo or MB SL500 (SL500 is 100 Euro/hr) from Sixt rental (@Airports usually). Hope to see you there, John, and good luck with the DVD/VHS.
