johnfelstead 11-10-2004 10:57 AM

Some good news. :D

I have just finished the NTSC DVD and built the master copy for duplication. Horah!! :D (and phew :o)

The master is being shipped to the duplicators tonight so i should have the first NTSC (USA Compatible) copies with me in two weeks.

I'll place a post in the vendors area tomorrow with ordering info so we can get things moving and be ready to dispatch when they come into stock.

Thanks for your patience, sorry its taken so long. :)

I am both thrilled and bummed that John has finished his DVD's. Thrilled because I'm really looking forward to watching, but bummed because this magnificent thread might end. John, you have provided endless vicarious thrills for thousands of folks over the year or two this thread has been alive. Thanks. My eternal gratitude.

johnfelstead 11-19-2004 12:42 PM

Thanks. I could post a few more pictures from the 24 hour race now if people are interested, i received a DVD full of them with some nice behind the scenes shots.

The On Track Nurburgring DVD's in NTSC format are now in stock and will be starting to be dispatched monday. :)
Yotsuya 11-19-2004 01:10 PM

Well, I was going to ask if the ring started allowing videos again before I relized how *old* this thread is. Never mind; I'll add the videos to my collection containing:
Some guy named Deutgen racing in an M3 (and keeping up more or less with an R34)
Someone following the ring taxi
Three wackos in a Sprinter (not the fastest but definitely the funniest)
grandpa rex 11-19-2004 06:37 PM

Hey Yotsuya, any chance you can post a link and share those videos?
HighLife 11-22-2004 01:03 AM

So - anybody recieved a copy of the DVD yet? Comments?

I just ordered a bunch to be sent to Australia  so hopefully by next week I'll be kicking back enjoying the sweet vision of Type RA attacking German tarmac in all its DVD glory
johnfelstead 11-22-2004 01:23 AM

The first USA shipment is being sent today Jason, so it will be a few days before anyone on NASIOC is able to comment.

Here are a few comments from people who have recieved the DVD's in the last week in the UK. So far it's been very well recieved, which is a relief. :)
Im no good at reviews - but i thot id tell u all that its excellent!

The footage is really clear. The different camera angles are fun to watch to see how quick ur really going.

First lap is good for familiarisation.
Second lap John talks through the lines - why they are like that - what he finds at points on the circuit - theres a scrollin graphic that shows the lines to take through the corner - nice to see the gradients shown too.
On the rest of the laps, I found Johns commentary of the second lap in my head and u look to see that he is moving on the correct lines

Was surprised how much better than downloadable clips the footage is (sense of speed is amazing) - and the commentary lap and different camera angles are great to watch.

I didnt even notice much of an accent - must be good audio editing

Must be a good xmas pressie for trackday / scooby drivers.

really is ace DVD!!

Thanks John!

DVD received and watched - excellent! The instructional lap is very good indeed.

Thanks

I've now watched my copy

Must admit it's very good indeed, and well worth the money, especailly if you are ever planning to head off to the ring.

The first lap gives you an idea of the general layout of the track, whilst the second goes into lots of detail about corners, entry points, braking points, bits to watch out for etc. Something you could watch many times over.

The bonus laps are great as well, showing you the circuit from many different camera angles. It's not until you watch the rear view that you realise just how steep some of the inclines are, and just how fast you are going in some places.

If you ever want to go over there, or even just get a feeling for what it's like to drive the circuit at speed, then this DVD is highly recommended, as it's just the job. The hints and tips on lines, braking points etc would take you dozens of laps (ie hundreds of pounds) to learn yourself, so superb value for money in that respect.

Even if you don't plan a visit to the Ring, then it's great to watch a well driven Impreza catch and overtake many high performance cars and bikes around the track - the speed differential at times is quite surprising, especially with more humble road cars and vans sharing the track!

It will make an excellent Xmas present to yourself, so go ahead and order your copy now, before the first batch sells out

Order, recieved and played Top quality

You'll love the HORN thinking of getting one myself

Same as above, brilliant dvd, well worth the money

John, its great to hear that this DVD is ready for sale. I'll be purchasing a few shortly.
johnfelstead 11-22-2004 12:29 PM

excellent.

Last nights Top Gear was fun. It had a big feature on the nurburgring, with Jerremy Clarkson trying to get round in 10 minutes BTG in a Jaguar S Type Diesel.

He had Sabine teaching him some of the time, she said he was 80% tallent free.
It's a brilliant episode showing you how dificult it really is to learn the circuit and drive at a good pace, he didnt have a clue where he was going to start with and was doing 10 minute 30's. :D

After 2 days of pounding round he finally made it with a 9 minute 59 second lap, he was chuffed to bits, i have never seen him so genuinely exstatic about anything. :D

Sabine then jumped in and did a 9 minute 12 lap. She was really trying, she had a great comitment face on. :D

The episode should be available to download soon at http://gear.viper007bond.com/

John,

I just wanted to let you know that as promised I bought a video, to support the great cause..

Opinions.. I thought that it was a great video, with a lot of info.. must say a lot of work went into it and it shows..
Got the video as a Xmas treat to myself.. and was excited when santa dropped it off right before the holiday..

Again great video, only constructive comment.. I would have liked to see more shots of the car itself.. very much a fan of the old school V5.. that would have been the icing on the cake..

Hopefully within the next two years I will be able to go out there and try it for myself.. I'd probably rent a ring taxi, first.. as from the video, it can get intense..

Take care, and happy holiday's

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the DVD. The ring Taxi is a lot of fun, it should be quite something in 2005 with the new V10 M5's they are using.

Hope everyone had a great holday and has a prosperous 2005.

I wont be making the 24hr race this year but hope to be at the Orwell Supersports races with the big 9.4 litre V8 McLaren, Lola, March etc. Can-Am historic racers instead, next trip should be Monza next month. :)

I dont know if Sabine is doing the 24hr this year unfortunately.

Cool that they are going to use the M5 ... remember ... for a while she wasn't going to drive the Taxi anymore because they wanted to use 545's !

Did you ever find out what type of tires the back of the grid regular, under funded types use in the 24 Hour race ?

Have you ever meet Vanina Ickx ... she's right up there with Sabine ... maybe just ahead of her ... ;)

I saw an interview with her ... what a darling !!!

Interesting... Apparently she got a good share of Papa's genes :) I wouldn't have known who she was just seeing her in a crowd, but with the name the resemblance is obvious.

Never met Miss Ickx, her dad was one of my heroes, brilliant sportscar driver in particular. Maybe i'll get to meet them sometime this year, which would be cool.

Back of the grid guys run the same tyres as the leaders, give or takle a few thousand Euro's. Everyone is running Slicks/Wets from the usual manufacturers.

If this is in reference to Sabine, that would be the Pistenklause, which is also a hotel. I've got photos of it from a 4 day job shooting on the nurburgring a couple of weeks past. It's just a short hop from the public entrance/parking area where the ring taxi's are at.

Well, I ran in to this guy sitting in a blue STi 5 RA (RHD) a few weeks ago while the track was closed...turned out it was John and his new (to him) STi. He has been nursing it back to health after it was serviced by an idiot for who knows how many years (that's a story for him to tell). Anyhow, he was in the the area with the team he works for and was able to bring his car over. It had a 16G something or other (similar to the Evo stock turbo) and KW variant 3 coilovers.

The track was too crowded for fast laps that day, but I did capture one of me following him. It was enjoyable, but slow due to all the traffic. His car is a blast to ride in, as the power to weight ratio is quite good (think he estimated 370 bhp).

Quick question, how many laps on the full Nurburgring track before the average driver memorizes every turn? Sorry, I didn't read through the whole thread (30 pages you know?).

Nice Todd ... thanks ... what do the Germans think about STI's? When I was over there a few months ago, I only saw one WRX in 10 days! I think every STI Ring video that I've ever seen shows them blowing by lots of german iron ...

I see German plated STis once in a while...usually outnumbered 5 to 1 by Dutch, Swiss or UK registered cars. I think they are rather expensive here and Subaru doesn't have extensive dealerships here...but they are getting very good ratings (like top 5) in the ADAC magazine I get for overall satisfaction, etc.

I think they respect STis, but theyt just don't seem super popular. The German gate gaurds used to comment quite a bit on my car...I'd usually get pulled over for the thorough inspection just so they could poke around and look at it.

As far as the # of laps goes...I felt pretty good by 40-50 laps. Just shy of 250 now.

I noticed that John put quite the distance on you in several sections, and then by the time a tight section came up, you were right on his tail again. Was he giving it up in the braking sections? Just looked kind of odd seeing him pull 100+ meters on you, and then you're 5 from him the next corner.
sirfrankwilliams 10-27-2006 04:54 PM

Todd, when was this filmed?
(Looks like you have your camera mounted in a discrete location)

Last I read in this thread, John had sold the RA. I wonder what he's driving now?
ToddStratton 10-27-2006 05:20 PM

Filmed in early Oct. He's in a new RA now...which is why I thought it appropriate to resurrect the thread. He pulls on me cause 1) his car weighs significantly less and 2) has about 70 bhp on mine (which is stock power wise). It was quite a leisurely lap (almost painfully slow, really) so I'm at a disadvantge pulling from a slow section or pass. We weren't going fast enough to really have braking be an issue.

To see a quicker lap, look at my other thread in this forum, as I'll be posting a new one soon.

Next time please adjust the mirror so we can at least see your steering inputs. Thanks Todd ...
ToddStratton 10-30-2006 03:24 PM

I don't have a microphone to hook into my camcorder, so no in car audio.

I taped a few laps yesterday with the camera in different position...I'll post them later tonight. You can see me pretty well, but the track is hard to see. This one is an 8:33 BTG...

Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i4f6pe3B-Q

Unfortunately, I had the visor down at the start and end, and the exposure out the front isn't too good in parts, but it does show me driving during an average lap. About 140 mph (indicated) at 1:53 before entering Schwedenkruez. The view out the side is kinda neat, and it gives you an idea of the speeds involved.

Todd
