Good read there ""At the 'Ring with Röhrl" article taken from the October 1999 issue of UK magazine Car"

You've probably read it John, but everyone else should give it a once over.
makofoto 05-09-2003 08:55 PM

Pretty Amazing ... John's Time that is ... 8'20 is approximately the same time John is doing in a Subaru ... matching Walter Rohrl's Porsche GT3 times!!!
Arnie 05-20-2003 12:37 AM

Hey John,

I've always wondered why you chose a Subaru over an EVO VI or whatnot? Assuming you've driven both in anger, how do you feel the two compare when properly setup? Just wondering, as most mags have always rated the EVO's dynamically superior to any WRX or STi.

So what's your take on the whole STI/EVO war?

Walter can go much faster than that in his GT3 though, i expect i am 30 seconds off his pace in reality. I have lots to learn yet and the GT3 is a faster car round there.

I never liked the EVO5/6, i think its an ugly pig that looks like its crashed into a car accesory showroom and all the plastic crap got stuck to it. The EVO7/8 just looks boring and fat.

I have never driven an EVO in anger, so cant coment first hand on its dynamics, i tend to avoid the EVO vs Scoob debates as they are uterly pointless.

What i have noticed from all the time i have spent on track/road with EVO's is in standard trim an STi RA will out handle and out acelerate one quite easily, a normal WRX and its the other way round as the dynamics of the standard WRX arent that great really, certainly not compared to a DCCD equiped STi, the diference that system makes is huge.

EVO's are slightly cheaper to tune power wise it seems and they are a quick car on track although the handling balance looks a bit horible compared to mine. With equal power the STi RA wins easily in my experience, but i haven't come up against an EVO8, maybe thats better? (i doubt it could cope with an STi5 RA simply based on weight, as to USDM STi which is a bit lardy it could be very close)

As to the USDM EVO vs STi debate, hard to say which is better, i certainly wouldnt go off what the journalists print, most of them cant drive for toffee and if honest wouldnt be able to tell the cars apart or get close to their capabilities. Who knows, i think in the end it comes down to what car you like as an overall package as the diferences, certainly in road driving are going to be small either way.
makofoto 05-22-2003 12:07 PM

Of course Walther can be much faster in a GT3 ... but still, his time ... and the reactions that his passanger had ... just go to show how great your car is ... being able to achieve that time. The Scuby driver probably helped a bit also. It would seem your passangers should be even more thrilled ... but perhaps your smoothness takes off the edge ... ;)

I got driven around the Paul Ricard track in France by Didrie Pironi ... the french Ferrari driver ... in a stock Renault sports sedan ... what was impressive was how smooth he was at speed ... throwing this sedan sideways at the end of the old long back straight ... to demonstrate how great Michelin tires are ... flying over the curbs ... but all so relaxed and smooth. :D
Arnie 05-22-2003 12:58 PM

thanks for your insight john. Especially as very few of us here either have your driving experience or real experience with any of these cars we read about. Its nice to hear from somone in the know, you know?:)
johnfelstead 06-11-2003 04:40 PM

Thanks chaps.

Just to update you on the VHS video, Diesel has been busy with this over the last few weeks, the plan is for me to go down to London the last weekend this month to put the finishing touches to it and then we should be set to have it turned around for production, so it shouldnt be too long now before its available. Apologies for the delay but work comitments got in the way of what is a time consuming project to do properly.
Arnie 06-11-2003 07:34 PM

you know I want one! Will jamie be distributing these for you stateside?
johnfelstead 06-13-2003 08:08 AM

Thats the plan Arnie.
ScoobySimon 07-08-2003 11:16 AM

King John ;)

I met John at Spa Francorchamps last March 31st, where he flew by me.

Got a chance to chat with him briefly afterwards, downloading the videos now, see if i'm in them ;-)

BTW John: I was the 1998 WR Blue Mica Euro spec Impreza Turbo

The BMW M Coupe is owned by a Belgian team. It has a 500HP BMW M5 V8 Engine ;)

One of the drivers is Chris van Woensel (www.cvwrallysport.be), who drives a Subaru Legacy everyday, and last year ran an Impreza WRX STi Version VII in the Rally (Group N)

(It's a small world ain't it ;) )

Hope to catch King John at the Ring some time ;)

Big thumbs up for you John, for making all these videos !!
johnfelstead 07-08-2003 05:35 PM

Hi Simon, yes i remember you well, i think this may be you?

This was my top speed at Spa just for your interest.

I was just on the phone this evening discussing another trip to Spa in September. I have a trip organised to the ring and it may be posible i can add a couple of days at Spa too, hopefully (i have lost track of how many times i have said that!) we will have the Ariel Atom supercharged race car with us for that.

To bring some other things up to date, this sunday i am taking part in a test day for the 10 of the best competition. The 22B drives have fallen through, one blew its head gasket, the other got as high as 567BHP/542ftlbs on the dyno last week and then decided to split a liner, so thats being rebuilt now but wont be ready in time sadly. Here is the engine dyno plot anyway.

So i am back in my trusty standard engined STi5 TypeRA with 280BHP to take on the monsters coming to this years 10 of the best.

Check the Entry List , its not complete yet but you get the picture. 850BHP skylines for gods sake. I have pretty much the lowest power output there, i guaratee i wont be last though. Last year i was fastest Subaru and 4th overall on the handling track with stock suspension, so i'll be looking to match that this year now i have the uprated kit on the car, its going to be tough! I'll try and get some external video shots of the car this weekend, as its a fairly compact area so i'll see if i can get the car dancing for the cameras. :D

The VHS video is still held up, i was due down in london last weekend but we couldnt get the studio time, sorry its taking so long.
ScoobySimon 07-08-2003 07:08 PM

That's me allright ;)

Great Bizzarini by the way (didn't have mirrors  )

Just checked some data from the Datalogger i borrowed for the day, my top speed just before Les Combes was about 125MPH (real speed). Laptimes were about 3.13-3.25

I've only been driving on track since January.

Love to go back to Spa soon (what's the deal in sept?)

There are some pix online from Spa, March 31st, at:

www.scoobysimon.tk, then click through to PHOTO ALBUM

Find the SPA album there...

Was first time with my new camera, so pix aren't as good as normal. John is in some of them.

It's 1AM so time to go nite nite

Take care
SS
Andrew Bacon 07-08-2003 07:40 PM

Best of luck on your Ten of the best effort, John.

If you can get some vid footage of it, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be delighted to see it. :)
johnfelstead 07-08-2003 08:15 PM

Thanks for the pictures Simon, some nice ones at the hairpin. Its good to see the car sitting flat on the exit, that was my first time running the whiteline uprated ARB's and rear drop links.

My lap times on the videos i saved seem to be between 3.03 and 3.08, i didnt log them but just got those times off the videos i uploaded. Pretty happy with those for a first visit.

I'll post more info about the september event when i know more.

Thanks Andrew, I'll try and get some video footage from this weekend, i think getting footage of the event proper will have some restrictions on it as they are filming it for SKY TV and a DVD but i'll see what i can do.
johnfelstead 07-16-2003 08:14 AM

Results from the test day for the ten of the best competition.

My top speed over 1.25 mile from a standing start was 158.1MPH

I set the second fastest time on the handling circuit, 0.08s behind the fastest car which is another TypeRA impreza but with 440BHP, this car did an 11.66s 1/4 mile so you can see what a power advantage he has over my standard engine of 280BHP.

I didnt do any 1/4 mile runs as i was concentrating on finding the correct setup for the handling track, you can see how my times steadily drop as i dial the car in to what was a very hot day, the car understeered more than usual so i had to go a bit radical on setup compared to my usual track settings.

Great result, John- In the second run of the handling competition, you beat Andy Forest's 2nd run by 2.10 seconds- not bad for a 160 HP disadvantage. Does he still have his stock 5th gear ratio, thus the (+-) 12.5 MPH advantage in the top speed?

If it's not proprietary info, what alignment specs do you run?

Thanks, Andy
johnfelstead 07-16-2003 02:14 PM

Andy's car has higher gearing than mine, i wasnt on the limiter in top, close though, it was just a case of thats how fast my car could go in 1.25 miles from a standing start, those last few MPH take ages due to drag and you need a lot of extra power to get those extra few MPH.

if you are refering to Andys 40.09 38.77 runs, that was me driving

I did one run to try and get a feel for the car, the second was me trying a bit harder but well bellow the cars limits. I would have beaten Andy but he changed his setup based on my feedback and made his fastest run as a result, bugger. ;):D:lol:

The reason we were there on sunday was to test the cars setups, the main aim for me is to get the team of Subaru entrants as high as posible in the finish order, if that means i am not fastest then thats OK, because it will mean someone else in a Subaru put in a better time that must be good. ;):D:lol:

I stand no chance overall, as i simply dont have enough power, Andy and the other big power Impreza's stand a good chance of doing well overall, so i am trying to help them do the best they can and am less concerned about my own standings. That doesnt mean i wont be trying hard to beat them all on the handling track, of course i will. :D:D

The car setup i used is clasified until after the event proper. However I talk about the setup used for normal track and road use earlier in this thread.
mlambert 07-16-2003 02:56 PM

I'm guessing Andy Forrest is "AndyF"?

170mph in 1.25 miles is very fast for a subaru!
johnfelstead 07-16-2003 02:59 PM

Yes, thats AndyF, his car is very fast.

johnfelstead 10-15-2003 07:21 PM

Hi Guys,

sorry for the delay in updating this thread, i have had a very hectic few months.

TOTB2 went wrong in a big way for me, my engine died, which has meant rather an expensive rebuild. I killed 2 big ends, crank, rods, bearings, oil pump, oil cooler etc etc. It was an ex STi engine!

I flew out to Finland for the WRC rally 12 hours after getting my car home (long story) then had to wait a couple of weeks to start the rebuild. I rebuilt the engine myself at the workshops of Prosport, who are a top Subaru specialist near where i live. They have a couple of Prodrive built rally cars amongst their stock, a very good workshop. I rebuilt it keeping it standard spec except for some billet steel rods, uprated big end bearings, uprated oil pump plus i had the whole bottom end balanced, rebuilt the top end etc so its a nice strong engine. I am just waiting on it being remapped right now to get it properly setup.

I plan on going out to the nurburgring in a couple of weeks, and i may be able to do something very special with an STi9 Spec C. Early days on that right now but it would be interesting if it happens. I'll keep you informed, fingers crossed!

OK, here is a video i hoped i would never get to see, the final 40 seconds of my engines life. Its taken from outside the car by a spectator, so you get to see and hear it properly for the first time. It sounds awesome at first, but at the finish its got a rather nasty death rattle. Focus isnt the best ;) but its still worth a look.

OK, go to http://homepage.mac.com/achad/TOTB_2_Movies/ and you can then download me on the handling course, plus on my one and only 1/4 mile (ignore the fact the skyline kicks my ass off the line, it was against the clock so i was taking my time ;))

You can also see the 700BHP Norris Designs EVO7 and the 200MPH plus 900BHP Skyline.

And here is a picture from this months Japanese Performance Magazine feature on the event. :)

Come on guys ... I meant dissappointing that you blew your engine and we didn't get to see more of John's great embassadorship for Suby's!
Arnie 11-05-2003 04:14 AM

That is indeed a total drag about your engine. did you find out what exactly happened to cause the failure? Its not like you were running insane boost or anything. You were pretty much box stock, except for the exhaust correct? So John, what's the latest on the engine rebuild and the video tape?
johnfelstead 11-05-2003 07:08 AM

sorry makofoto, i thought you were having a winge about the footage. :o You are right, i was gutted when the engine failed, havnt felt so disapointed in a long time as i knew i had a chance of winning that.

Why did my engine blow? i cant tell you right now for various reasons, but i do know why. The engine was basically stock, but had been fitted with a decat system and remapped the week before the event. I rebuilt it as stock, but with some quality steel rods, motorsport oil pump and bearings, balanced bottom end etc. just to add more safety should i choose to up the power at a later date, it's currently running around 310BHP.

The video, i chased this up yesterday actually. It looks like the only way this is going to get done is if i spend the christmas week down in London in the studio. Diesel has been totally snowed under with work projects (plus just had a baby) and there hasnt been any free time available for the editing suite. We have booked the week over christmas now, so i am about as sure as i can be that we will get it produced then.

Sorry for the delay, it is frustrating as i know its going to be a great video.
Arnie 11-06-2003 02:58 AM

great news about the video, but no rush there. we've all waited this long and i'm sure it will be great and very eductational. now i hope you don't get sued by the n-ring for putting it together.

can't wait to hear how the motor runs after this rebuild. Should be better than before. best of luck john.

johnfelstead 11-14-2003 07:01 PM

The engine is running great now, nuts as it may sound i have put 10,000 miles on it since i rebuilt it. It's producing 250BHP/252lbft @ the wheels.

I dont do the street racing thing, i save all my fast stuff for the track, it's the only way to keep yourself and everyone else safe!
:alien:  :D
jmh 11-14-2003 10:15 PM

10,000 miles:eek: that sounds like alot of driving in short amount of time. would you mind telling us how you broke her in...new engine that is.Looking forward to your continued driving exploits.

cheers
johnfelstead 11-16-2003 01:39 PM

i ran the engine in pretty quickly, just a few days. When i changed the oil and started to load it up it was detting badly, so i spent 2000 miles getting that diagnosed and sorted out.

Since then i have been to the nurburgring which is 1500 miles, plus i drove to Spain for the Catalunya rally, i did 3250 miles in that trip alone!

Then when back from catalunya i drove back to london to get the engine remapped, then back home again, thats another 500 miles.

The rest is just doing my usual potering about, i do get about a fair bit. For example i drove to cardiff for Rally GB, came back to manchester, then the next day drove to edinburgh to see michael moore live, driving straight back the same day. I probably use my impreza more than the majority of people.
.....Those settings are for my car perminantly, i use it as my daily driver. Having zero toe front/rear isnt a good idea IMHO as it makes the car wander and isnt as stable under braking. If you run zero rear toe you introduce rear end instability. Having more rear toe on the Impreza increases its tendency to power oversteer too, if you want it to be very oversteery you could run as much as 10 minutes toe in on the rear per side.

ET is the offset of the wheel, its the amount the wheel sits inboard of the centre line of the hub. Every car has diferent suspension geometries and needs diferent wheel offset's to place the wheel in the correct position. RWD and FWD/AWD cars use very diferent offset values normally. My westfield used ET13 for example. Standard offset is ET52, prodrive tend to try and stay within a few millimeteres of this, though on the STi 18" wheels they have gone more towards ET45. The car sufers more from torque steer and straight line instability using ET45 but the response is much improved, it's a bit of a trade off, the car is harder to drive on a bumpy road, but it does what you want more instantaneously.
(From the first page)
That should be read by anyone asking about suspension mods.

John,
Any recomendations on alignment settings for GC with
an ALK, 20mm F / 24mm R sway bars, P1 springs, AGX struts,
and 48mm offset 17's on 215-45 tires? What would those blokes at PowerStation do? :)

I have tried zero toe with 1 degree of neg. camber all around and all of the traits you mention above are exactly right. The ALK pulls the castor back about 4 degrees total. I like the crisp turn in and lack of push, but it digs into the apex (oversteers) more than I sometimes want it too. Also bump steer is huge compared to stock, but I feel like that is a ride height issue.

Anyway, please PM or post with your thoughts.
I'm rediscovering the vids with the new DSL here. Thanks again!~
johnfelstead 12-11-2003 07:09 PM

Thanks chaps.

I would try a 22mm front sway bar with a 24mm rear bar, or try going down to a 22mm rear bar, that will help balance the chassis out a bit better.

To combat the bump steer, drop the steering rack 5mm. To do this make 2 shim plates up plus 4 x 5mm washers, the shim sits between the rack and the subframe, the washers sit between the U brakets that clamp the rack and the subfame. That should get your steering geometry closer to zero bumpsteer. You will have to slacken and reposition the steering knuckle joint to allow the rack to drop down too.

Ride height is very important on the Impreza, they dont react well to lowering and in fact the lower you drop them, the more they roll. Best handling i have found is using stock TypeRA ride height at the front and have the rear sitting 3mm higher than the front, to give some positive rake, that helps to generate front end bite on turnin.

Tyres, you should use 215/40x17 with the GC8, 45 profile is too big.

With regards to the video production, it's all booked for me to go down to london first weekend of Jan to finish it off, so hopefully thats going to be all sorted soon.

makofoto 12-11-2003 10:41 PM

John ... what's your general opinion of adding a bit (1/16th inch) of toe out on a WRX ... minus 1 degree camber all around. I'm going to start doing a bit of AutoX'ing again.

Certainly seems to help make the turn in faster!
