I have 6 cars and two motorbikes passing me on tape from last year, thats the grand total from memory.
One was a GT1 Porsche 911, that i let pass after i was held up by a 944 turbo and he caught us, then i just followed him through. The ring Taxi has passed me once, in the wet, i just followed that then. 2 were 944 turbo's, this was in a monsoon and i wasnt risking stuffing it, my tyres were shot. I had the Ring Mini pass me in the wet too, same reason. And i had the YES, german kit car catch me at wipperman.
The only 2 bikes to pass me were very fast superbikes like an R1 ridden by experienced ring riders.
Pretty sure thats the lot. I'll see if i can dig that lot out.
Not sure of the fastest BTG time, i think it's 7:45 set by ULF in his GT3 Porsche.

John, I've watched that westie vid at least 10 times and it is great. Did you manage to tape the westie doing your fastest lap or close to it? I'm sure with that car running full boost and you knowing the track better would lead to an even MORE exciting vid. I hope im not asking for too much but you've got me hooked.

John,
Is ULF the guy who test drives for RUF (Porsche) if it is I remember seeing a video of him driving the ring in the old 'tame' yellowbird!
He was a total nutter hitting close to 200mph down one of the straights whilst scratching his head and driving with one hand
Amazing stuff :)

I am trying to get hold of a copy of my old westie footage that was filmed for microsoft out at the ring. I loaned that to someone who subsequently disapeared on me. If it turns up i'll put that on here, its good stuff, filmed from my rollbar.
I have just been in touch with a friend who filmed me at Cadwell Park race circuit (known as the mini nurburgring). He has some footage of me taking off at the top of the mountain at about 40MPH, landing sideways and then just doing a huge sideways powerslide down the straight with oposite lock on. It was one of those moments you never forget, so hopefully i can get that this week. The Westie was an amazing car to drive, i really miss that.
ULF is a swedish guy who almost lives at the ring, he is very fast and smooth. The RUF porsche footage was a diferent guy, i would love a go in that car, looks huge fun. :D

This weekend is the first outing this year for me on track, i'll be driving at Donington Park race circuit, the venue of Senna's greatest race where he lapped the entire field.
This is a track i know intimately having driven well over 1000 laps so i'll see if i can get some fun footage and try and come up with some funky new camera angles.
Can you guys think of anything that you would like to see in particular?

I like the high over the shoulder where we can see you at work/play and see the track ... and instruments. I want it all .... :-) One of the best things about your videos is seeing that to be fast one needs to be smooth ... not sawing away at the steering wheel ... at least not on dry tarmac ... and thus ... seeing the steering wheel/hands is a good thing.

After looking at the FrontBumperCam ... I think it's better to NOT use a short shutter ... the sharp grabs of the track graffitti are irritating ...
The sense of speed is wonderful in the low front bumper cam ... perhaps something low but on the side so we can see the front wheel/tire at work ... :)

John,
Bit of a strange idea but do your feet do anything special :D
I've seen a few rally vids with two cameras one on the track and one on the feet showing how the professionals left foot brake, heel and toe etc I find it quite amusing and great viewing.
Don't know how hard that would be maybe getting some light on the subject would be a problem?

I like the way the bumper cam resolves the graffiti. Don't forget you are seeing a relatively low quality mpeg version; the masters are DV quality and look a lot crisper.
I'll try and rig something up to film my dancing feet. I believe Petter Solberg is a Norwegian disco dancing champion, me, the most impressive I have managed is shagging on Panama City Beach, Florida, with a bunch of 50 something dirty dancers. (Yes, shagging is a style of dance :D:lol: ) I was almost as good as the guy with the wooden leg. Don't expect to be too jealous of my skills down there. :D
I'll try and get some footage from the helmet cam setup too; I like the way that looks

IMHO ... that is what is not good about using the faster shutter speeds on your camera ... the track (the graffitti actually) is too crisp ... and thus distracting. The blurring you get with the "normal" "shutter" (sample time) also might make it look faster ... :-)
I don't imagine John's feet are dancing the way one would see in a WRC rallye car at full tilt. From the inside camera ... and the rev sound ... and the characteristics of the Ring ... even with his slightly shorter gear(s) he isn't making that many shifts ... but yah ... it would be cool to see his gas pedal modulation. Mr. Smooth I imagine ... is going to be pretty fluid. :-)
John ... thanks for even querying us on our camera angle opinions ... have fun ...
btw. Have you ever had the taxi's try to "race" you ... or vice versa ... one is probably not suppose to actually "race" (wheel to wheel) during these open track days ...
What's your racing experience ...

I tend to avoid getting involved with other cars at the ring these days, it's not safe to play (plus no bugger seems to be able to keep up. ) I have followed the ring taxi a few times, last visit was fun in the wet, I did 4 laps with the Ring Taxi and the driver was a bit confused as he was struggling to understand how a British plated Impreza was keeping up. I found that pretty funny.
My racing experience? It's a bit mixed I suppose. I was really interested in aircraft when I was younger, age 13-16 you would have found me in an aircraft somewhere. I flew solo in gliders age 16 and was hoping to join the RAF as a pilot. That never happened because I discovered I am colour blind. I used to ride trials motorbikes too at that age, you know, that crazy climb up a mountain cliff on two wheels stuff.
I got into cars in a big way when I was 17, although I have followed rallying since I was very young. I marshaled my first rally aged 17 and got involved in the motor club. I had no money though, so had to wait until I was 19 before starting to build my first rally car. I did a few years on and off Club Rallying in cars I built, always with cheap stuff though. I did OK but I couldn't keep the finances going so gave up driving.
I then got heavily involved in two different motorsport programs. I am a team member on a top national rally team, my main area is to look after the engine/electrics on the car, but I can do any job upto a full reshell. The only thing I am not good at is welding. I also designed and built a GT racing esprit with a friend, this is a spaceframe car with Formula 1 gearbox, suspension etc and a 5 litre V8 prototype engine. This sits under a Lotus Esprit Silhouette composite body. We developed that from last on the grid to pole position in 2 years, quite an achievement in a no holds bared prototype race series. We blew the engine in that last year so are just finishing building a 6 litre prototype, the only one in the world right now, it should be around 600BHP, the car weighs 750Kg.
In between all that lot I have competed on hillclimbs and sprints, co-driven on special stage rallies in the UK and have competed in 3 TSD rallies with Jamie over in the USA/Canada. I have seen Jamie progress so much since I met her and am chuffed I have been a part of her working her way up in the sport.
I almost forgot, i was the Opel Manta owners club national motorsport champion in 1995. That year my rally team won the 2 litre national forest rally championship too.
I tend to keep my fast driving to non competitive track stuff these days, I don't have time to do a championship and I am not disiplined enough to not bankrupt myself in the process. The only competitive event I have done in the last 12 months as a driver was the 10 of the best shootout, where I won the Subaru section of the handling/sprint track, I set 4th fastest time overall in my standard spec STi5 RA against plenty of highly modified cars, so I still have a bit of speed in me. I also competed in the Thunderbird rally in BC navigating Jamie, where we finished 11th overall.
I drive for fun, I am way too competitive when I do a motorsport event proper. If I win the lottery then I will give it another go, but for now I am happy to just enjoy myself and have a battle with myself, rather than other people.

John's STi RA is much lighter mainly due to the fact that it is the older body style which in itself is about 300lbs lighter than a the GDB/A bodystyle. Because John has the RA, it is lighter still with less sound insulation, lighter glass, crank windows, no sideskirts/lip, etc. making it about 100 lbs less than a standard GC8.
So John's car is probably sitting under 2800lbs with his 280+hp.

John ... since you have intimate knowledge of WRC cars ... can you tell us ... is there an actual HP limit to the 2 liter cars? When they say that they have 300 HP ... where is that measured? John, I'm thrilled that this thread has continued for so long. I have learned a tremendous amount, and had a great time doing it. Vids are killer. I loved the link to Ben Jovejoy's page. He's got a lot of great information including your pic!

I'll come back to the thread sunday, crazy day today and tomorrow i am on track at donington.
Oh, guess who has sprained his right ankle loading his wheels into his car this afternoon? I hope it gets better by the morning or i will be driving like a guy with a wooden leg. :(

My ankle held out so i had a bit of fun thankfully.
I didnt get a great deal of footage, but here are snipet from the pitwall of my car so you can hear what it sounds like. :D

Yellow RUF Porsche Video
If any body is interested, I have that video of the yellow RUF Porsche if you want I can send it to someone to host on a site. I got it of a Ferrari-based website year ago. It comes in to vids. 14 and 10 MB respectively. About 5min into the second video, it shows this guy power sliding around a corner and it is truly the most amazing feat of driving I have seen besides Johns videos. This is a high quality production with helo shots and everything. I even think the guy is driving with only his socks on!

From the still of your car ... that has got to be one of the prettiest Subies ever! And I love my bug eye WRX! Makes one wonder why they ever changed the design ... ?
Is that an air vent on top of the car? Is that after market ... or in place of AC in Europe? I imagine there must be a filter or mesh in it ...

Sorry it took a while to answer, this week has been the pits. ;)
Top speed on my car is 160MPH, thats at 8200rpm in 5th gear.
WRC engines are theoretically limited to 300BHP. This isnt measured. The way power is policed is by using a 34mm restrictor on the inlet to the turbocharger. This means a max power of around 330BHP. Torque is very high however, but the engines dont rev very high, hence low power output by comparison.
Do a search in this forum, ALS has been covered extensively in the past.
The roof vent is factory fit on the TypeRA. There is no mesh, its just open to air when you open it up. The reason it is there is down to rally homologation. The typeRA was used as the basis for the works rally cars in groupA and groupN and to run a roof vent on rally, the production car has to have one.
glad you are enjoying the vids and the pictures/techie stuff, thats what it's all about. I should have some good picies this weekend to upload to the forum too. I have been asked to help run a Prodrive built STi7 TypeRA Spec C on a rally this weekend, real top quality car for a good driver, so i'll take my camera along and snap a few shots.

www.johnfelstead.uk ??
It may be more work than your time permits, but, have you thought of having a web site to share your expoilts? I'm thinking something like subiegal.com. Your information, videos, stories, and photos are all very engaging- real top notch content. The longest thread in the Motorsports Forum could translate very well as its own internet destination.

I have registered johnfelstead.co.uk and use it on occasion to host pictures, but i havent had the time to build a proper website. On that front i am as dumb as they come.
I would love to have a website similar to Jamie's (although i wont rival her on the looks front  ) but i simply dont have the tallent or the time to invest in setting that up. Jamie amazes me with the amount of energy she has to put into her rallying, website, pr, sponsor support, car prep, nasioc moderating, full time job plus family.

As usual, awesome videos. Well worth the wait on my choked T1 connection.
However, my only suggestion would be to tie in a singular mic, maybe taped to the dash or something, so we get the video from various parts of the car (roof, front bumper, rear window, helmet, etc) but do not get all the excess wind noise that some of them offer. Of course, I'm sure this has already been brought up, somewhere in those 12 pages of posts. :D
But either way, I'll probably download the videos none the less. :D Keep up the good work.

Anybody else been to Nurburgring in the last few weeks, or going to go in the near future?
| sscguy | 02-27-2003 06:29 PM |
John, just curious, I know your STi Type RA is different in many, many ways from our own humble 2.5RS, and from tales and your videos I know it handles like a champ. I'm wondering how the various differentials affect driving? Do they reduce understeer, add oversteer, add together for a general neutral ride, or what? And from the sound of it, they're adjustable, is that like changing the clutch packs or is there an adjuster inside (like with the 22B) or what? Lastly, have you compared your STi with the 22B on the track? Just curious how they would match up. Thanks for your help, and much respect from someone just now getting into on-track motorsports.

Hi sscguy
My transmition system is identical to a 22B. It has a large rear diff with a plated LSD, electrically adjustable DCCD centre LSD and a front mechanical LSD.
The main diference over any other Impreza's are two fold. Firstly the torque split is 65R/35F so the car handles in a much more balanced manner than with a 50/50 torque split as all other Impreza's are. Secondly, the LSD's are much more agresive, being mechanical rather than Viscous. This means the traction is much higher, but the locking charicteristics are more of a handful for an average driver.
It's a very indepth subject to explain how the various diffs work. The basics are that a viscous diff allows much more slip than a plated diff and cant handle the same levels of torque. Viscous diffs overheat when pushed hard also, where as mechanical diffs tend to be consistent.
The centre diff control alters the handling significantly, i always drive on track in the dry with the centre diff open, this allows me to spin the rear wheels up and make the car handle like a RWD car. In the wet if i am looking for speed i will wind the centre diff lock ratio up as this gives a huge increase in traction and braking over an open centre diff. It tends to induce more high speed understeer, but in tight corners you can use the centre and front LSD's together to pull the car out of the corner. You can drive the car diferently in medium speed corners too by varying the centre diff lock, the more lock you wind in, the less RWD in driving style you adopt and you can start to drive the car in 4 wheel drifts rather than tail slides. It's hard to explain, much easier to demonstrate.
The main handling trait of a standard Impreza setup, including P1 is for on the limit understeer. The diff setup in my STi gives me a much more balanced chassis with the ability to drive the car with oversteer at the limit. It's much more fun to drive because of that.
I have driven a couple of 22B's on track and they feel pretty much identical to my TypeRA. I will be driving a couple of very highly modified 22B's later in the year in the 10 of the best shootout, that should be very interesting as they are probably the quickest 22B's ever built.

Next weekend i will be there again, but this time i wont be driving my STi. I have been asked to drive an XTR2 Westfield for a couple of guys who own the car. I was fortunate enough to drive this car for its first run on track to shake it down a couple of months ago. The owners arent as experienced as myself in driving cars like this so have asked me to give it a run to see what lap times it can manage and give them some more feedback on setup.
This is a prety special car, so i intend to get some filming done. I didnt get a lot on my STi last time at dono as i was a little distracted with other events, this time i'll try and make it a good filming session too, to help gather some data.
Have a look at the car, it's prety nuts. ;)

Is this the same car you have been talking about developing over the past year?

The Noble has a much higher spec for track driving than my scoob, check it out at noble tech spec
2.5Litre Twin Turbo in a 980Kg sportscar should wipe the floor with me. ;):D Donington is a traditional modern track in that you dont carry huge speed with you through most of the corners, so driver knowledge/ability has less of a role to play than at the ring.
The Westfield XTR2 is the first customer built version, i helped a little with some tech advice and was asked to shake the car down on track for it's first run, as the owners were scared to death of it. It was a real honour actually, i have never been the first driver on track in a new car before, quite a responsibility. I managed to lap just shy of my fastest lap in my old westfield after just a couple of laps, so next weekend it should really fly.
The car i was really involved in last year was the supercharged Ariel Atom, that has gone very quiet due to lack of funds right now, which is a shame because that car is really something special.

yeh, they suck ass.
They are not in the same class, not even close. Dropping the SO2 PP was a great loss. SO2's are a bit too soft for track work really, but on the road they are the best tyre i have ever driven on.
I now run Toyo T1S's in 225/35x18 on the road as they seem fairly close to the SO2.

Hey John, thanks for the detailed explanation. I also dislike understeer, and in any car would like to get rid of it, so making the car more rwd-biased (as with the 65/35 power split) would be my preference. If I were to put an STi RA transmission in my 2.5RS, with the adjustable center differential and mechanical front differential, would that same 65/35 power bias be present? How would an open front differential be different from the mechanical front LSD? So you know, I'm looking at the transmissions offered here:
www.rallispec.com
as they seem to have complete packages and I've heard many good things about them. One other thing, is the RA box equipped with any dog gears, i.e. needing double-clutching for any downshifts? Thanks again for all your help.

Another terrific vid as usual, thanks John, but what is with those "posts" at many of the apexes? Seems like a particularly severe way to protect the new grass seed!
| johnfelstead | 03-11-2003 02:50 PM |
Hi guys,
sorry for the delay, this last week has been a bit mental. ;)
My next ring trip is the weekend of 29/30/31 March, coming home 1st April with a hangover no doubt. I'll drive over on the 29th, spend 30th on track then drive to Spa and spend the 31st on the Spa GP circuit, something i am really looking forward to.
Yep, i agree on the posts at donington, they are rather protective of their grass it seems. They are only plastic, so its not a big deal if you wipe them out, although i dont plan on testing that theory with my car. :D
If you install an RA transmition in the car you will get the 65/35 torque split. Open front diffs dont provide as much traction, especially at low speed tight corner exit, but they are a bit more friendly for mr joe public, they are less needed that a good rear LSD IMHO.
The RA box is a syncro box, it doesn't use any dog gears, just a close ratio gear set.
