VIDEOS!!! Rallycross NER SCCA in 2002 WRX

This was my 1st video editing with windows movie maker. No criticism please.
These videos are of me running my friends 2002 WRX at a SCCA rallycross in CT Saturday January 27th, 2007. Mods: QTP cut out catless downpipe, Cusco RSB, steering rack bushings, and a catless uppipe. I placed 7th out of the 81 people competing in all classes
Click Here to watch my rallycross vid
I lost control a little in the thick gravel on the next run. Too much oversteer and over compensation. It looks cool so I figured I would post it too. I took out a cone when pulling out of the oversteer :( . It was 17 f degrees out that day. It made cones shatter when they were hit.

Nice job! I am competing in my first rallyx in two weeks!!
QTP cut out catless downpipe, Cusco RSB, steering rack bushings, and a catless uppipe. I placed 1st in class (AWD Prepared) out of 13 people.
Does the car still have a functioning cat on it? Usually, if the UP/DP cats are gone, the last one is too. Just curious. :)
Looks like those 2WD cars in Modified were quick (faster than you). ;)

I assume that was just someone in the passenger seat holding the camera? You need to get some sort of camera mount for the next one. :)
Definitely looks like fun. I'd love to try RallyX...if I could drive someone elses car..

Damn, I didn't know there was a rally-x in CT this weekend! :( I've never done one before, I would have liked to have tried it out.

By the way, I have never rallycross before. This was my first motorsports event on any kind of surface that wasn't tarmac/concrete.

Yeah :sarcastic: 2 out of the 20 cars in 2wd Modified were faster than me and from what I saw it looks like modified class has NO restrictions on modification whatsoever.
Modified=Do whatever the F* you can to make the car as Fast as possible.

Yea, it was my co-driver holding the camera with the wrist strap on for safey.

Thanks for bolding that part for me. I would have missed it otherwise.
So what about them cats?

No cats. I assume you are you gonna jump on me as being mis-classed? You can thank the tech/reg for that one. We (my co-driver and I) told them that the car had an aftermarket downpipe, uppipe, rear sway bar, and front strut bar. They made the call.
Either way, I am happy with my performance. 7th out of 81 for a rallycross newbie on all-season tires.
So were you running at the event? Perhaps in your 93 Civic Si?

Why would you think he's jumping on you for being mis-classed?
BTW, that M2 class winning civic has a stock b17 swap, quaife, koni's and rally tires. That's it. It still has a full interior.

It's up to the competitor to class the car correctly, not tech. Tech is for safety, and safety only. They didn't/don't/shouldn't make any call as to classing. Maybe offer some guidance, but classing is totally up to the competitors.
They can only help with what you tell them... when you left off the part that you had no cats at all, that would have made a different determination... no? How come you didn't tell them that the last cat was removed also? That was removed from the car and clearly a modification. Just as if I removed my interior... just because they didn't specifically ask, I don't have to tell?
Just keep that in mind when running for the next event.
So really, you didn't come in 1st... you came in 4th as if you had run in the proper class in the 1st place.
Congrats for beating everyone in the class when you ran a more prepared car against others that were running less prepared cars in the class leagally.

kC,
Looks like I was right. I saw right thru you bro. Typical bull*shwaz. I told tech and reg my mods and they told me AWD Prep. Who am I to say they are wrong. I don't own a SCCA rallycross rule book. Nor would anybody organizing the event expect me to being that it was my 1st event.
Thanks for your input.

gawd dammit, the anal autox rule nazis have broken into rallyx!
Don't worry about it, dude. If you weren't running rally tires, a few extra hp didn't make any difference at all. Congratulations on 7th out of 81 on your first try - 95% of rallyx placing is based on driver skill, not on how many cats you have (# of cats makes up 0.000000001%).
PS - next time make sure you read the rules & class your car accordingly, or just don't mention mods & classing, so you won't have to hear a bunch of whining & name-calling.

Or.... You knew you weren't legal to begin with, or at the very least you were suspicious of it, thus leaving off the fact that you had deleted all of your catalytic converters.

There you go, no more excuses.
Unfortunately, KC is correct and you were misclassed if you have NO cats on the car. Prepared rules state that you can modify the exhaust from the ports back, but must have one functional cat in the system if the car was originally equipped with converters.
So, busted, enter in Modified next time or someone could protest now that they know you've got no cats.
Tim
p.s. Still a damn good drive for your first event!

Simply, If you did NOT have a cat on that car, you should have been in M4.. By the sounds, that car did not have much of a cat, or exhaust on it..

Thank you to the people who can at least acknowledge that I did some OK driving.
Now that I know, next time I will be able to class myself accordingly.
No hard feelings. If anyone from NER SCCA wants to come and reclaim the trophy let me know and we can arrange a time and place to do so. If anyone feels obliged to inform NER SCCA of my proper class be my guest. I will confirm such claims if NER SCCA requires driver confirmation.
I don't want to be thought of as a cheater. I was just a nooB in a fairly underpowered catless WRX compared to my STi.

In NER Rally-X the classes are hotly contested where one point difference at end of year can make or break a year-end championship.
Mis-classed cars are everyone's problem, and sometimes cannot be avoided. In that I totally agree, especially with people new to the sport.
In this case, however, looking at the reaction of the poster, the competitors actually knew they had done further modification to the car, but didn't fully disclose them.... and was looking for 'the easy win, everyone else be damned'.
Like I've said in the previous post... now you know what class you need to be in. I'm just a bit more sarcastic and in your face than most people. :)
I lack.. what's that word... 'tact'.

Do you think your sly for getting me to admit I had no cats without first telling me where you were going with it? I'll bet you did. Thats exactly why I made the assumption (correctly) that you were trying to be sly. So I beat you to it and called you out on it.
At the event I had not even concidered the possibility that I was mis-classed in my favor. In fact, I had some tech/reg people say, "hmmmm I think that sway bar bumps you up to prepared from stock. Let me concur." All this after telling them about the modded uppipe and downpipe.

And for what it's worth, the 2nd and 3rd place cars in the class...
Were the tech inspectors that told him he should be in Prepped.
Seriously - no big deal - modifications noted, so next event you're in Modified.
As for the Modified cars being "do anything to make them faster." Not many are. The VR4 that won M4 doesn't have a whole lot done to it and is his daily driver. Hal and Chang (1st and 2nd in M2) have done some work to the cars, but not completely crazy. For instance Hal's car is a 2.0L 8v engine with little or no modification internally. He's probably giving up 50HP to Chang's "stock" B17 swap.
And in case anyone is looking at the Saab 900 that was there and thinking that is where they should be going with their Modified preparation - DON'T!!! That car was not legal and will not be allowed at future events.

Alright.. this is getting a little stupid. Just for reference, KC is is one hell of a driver and knows his stuff I think was just trying to make a point of the right thing to do. Not a big deal.
However, you did immeditely jump to the defensive which didnt really help. You didnt know because it was your first time and that is perfectly fine, just do the right thing next time.
On the other side of things, that is really awesome you did so well your first time, keep it up and I hope to see you out there again. Maybe next time you can beat me in the stock WRX wagon ;-) But sersiously, i hope you make it out there again and keep up the good driving.
Rallyx is really very much about the driver so get out there and talk with your skillz! :-)

Sorry KC approached this in a way that set off the e-thug in you, but don't hold it against NER Rally-x, they'll be happy to have you back for the next event even if it's in a different class.
Your driving was quite respectable for the first time on a loose/frozen surface, lots of people would have over-driven the whole thing. That looked like a sweet long course! I went to that event last year and had a good time, but I couldn't make it this year and was bummed. If they ever have it this year, you should try the BMW club ice racing up in NH.

The problem started when the OP got defensive. You usually don't get defensive if you're honestly ignorant about the rules. You also don't start blaming other people if your honestly ignorant of the rules.
If ANYONE steps into motorsports forum on ANY board and starts bragging about a first place finish at their first ever event, they are opening themselves to any number of barbs. The one thing most common in motorsports is Type A personalities.

KC,
From what I read in this thread, Your a Great Debbie Downer on someone for trying... If it wasn't for noobys you wouldn't be in the sport. Yeah, I'm sure you were a nooby once too :o . Figuring out how to screw your gas cap on and all.
Your saying to him "Good try but you still suck." Where did he ever come off cocky? I think your the one who thinks they have a big.
The Techs: If they want to put a car in class they will do it. Maybe because the car is for the most part Un modded and/or they wanted to even the amount of cars maybe so they had more cars in its class?
The rules are set by the people running it! In any sport if they rule FOUL, FAIR, OUT, or SAFE. The Referees, officials, and umpires, and even the Techs make the decisions!
So he followed what they told him.. So he shouldn't be put down for trying..
Wow man you need to get out more and have a brighter day. Maybe a lap dace. Whatever gets you to smile..Go take the Saturn for a drive.
Good job I wanted to go to this event but my girlfriends kept me up late and I missed it. Next time I hope to see you KC. And you can show off your Skills. And While I miss classify my car. I'll make sure to tell you, just to see you cry.
Hey i'm not there to win either! Just to have a great time:banana:

It's my car. I signed us up. They asked what class we were in and I said "I have no idea" they said what do you have done, I told them everythign done (minus steering rack bushings cause i forgot). They said "for now you are in awd prep, tell tech to check it" at tech they asked our class we said we dont know, they said whats done, i listed everything, they put us in awd, prep. They were gonna leave us out of prep but the sway bar put us in prep. Do not tell us that we missclassed ourselves or it was our job to class ourselves. We went there to have fun not cheat people out of trophies. I told them my mods and they told me my class. And as we learned by the fact that i placed much lower in teh class, it's about the driver, not the car. RE92's FTW.

Actually, the problem started when KC didn't just come out and ask the question and/or state his point, as would be appropriate for someone of his experience (both on this site and in SCCA). I have absolutely zero knowledge of what the SCCA Rally-x rules say when it comes to classing, but as soon as I read his first reply I knew exactly what KC was getting at and exactly where the "conversation" was going to go.

You guys are funny. Simple fact, if the OP hadn't gotten defensive, this whole thing would have been difused. If the response to KC's post had been, "Yeah, no cats. Why?" we wouldn't be here talking about this still. KC or someone else could then point out that in Prep you need at least one cat, at which point the OP says "Oh. OK. I didn't know that. I'll be sure to run in Mod next time. Thanks! BTW, how would you rate my driving?". See? No drama. When someone gets defensive and starts blaming others it spells G-U-I-L-T-Y.
Chuck, in rallyx, autox, and club racing, classing and rules enforcement is done by the competitor. Tech's primary role is safety. Unfortunately, the liberal PC pansies don't want to step on anyone's toes and have created a culture that frowns on the competitors enforcing the rules. I'm not going to protest anyone for some small infraction, but I'm not going to let them cruise on by without knowing they are technically illegal.
As to the comments about n00bs being necessary and the need to be a little easier on them, I thought KC's approach to this whole thing was very tactful, much more laid back then usual. Instead of calling the OP out as a cheater straight off, he asked a loaded question to which the WAY it is answered says more about what actually happened then the answer. Like I said before, if the OP hadn't gotten defensive, this would have blown over in 3 posts. Nah, the OP had to be defensive and "show up" KC by reading between the lines and here we are on page 2 talking about rules instead of some respectable driving.

So, the "tactful" way to go about this is to ask a loaded question so that the OP can incriminate himself? I would think the tactful way to go about this would have been to say...
"Cool video! Pretty good driving to finish 1st in class at your first rally-x, particularly on crappy RE92s.
Just a note, though, if your exhaust is catless you really should've been classed in Modified instead of Prepared. Here's the link to the Rally-X rules for future reference - [insert link here]. Hope to see you at the next event!"
Done. No loaded questions necessary. If I had been posed the same obviously loaded question as SIMPSON was, I would have responded in exactly the same way. And I say it was "obviously loaded" because (as I said before) as soon as I read KC's first reply I knew exactly where the conversation was going, even without having any knowledge of the Rally-X classing rules. If I could see it that clearly, I have to think SIMPSON could see it the same way.
Last but not least, I think it's laughable that you're saying this thread should be about respectable driving when your own posts have been entirely focused on calling SIMPSON out as either being deceptive (at best) or an outright cheat (at worst) by intentionally not explaining all of his modifications.

So then you agree that he knew he was illegal and knowingly ran in an easier class? You see, an innocent person can't incriminate themself if they are actually innocent. Your subconsious seems to know this.
Stop blaming other people. The OP did this all by himself by getting defensive over a simple, if loaded, question.

S1MPSONS, could you post a link to results? I'd like to see them just for curiosity.
Also, did the other cars in your class have rally tires, or anything more aggressive than RE92's? If so, VERY good job.
I think we'd all like to get past the objections of the argumentative little boys who've cluttered up your thread, so if they respond again, just ignore them. :)

Funny thing is that RE-92's or similar were probably the right tire choice for this venue/conditions (oh geesh - did I just defend re-92s  ). Very hard packed, frozen dirt that looked a lot like concrete in places. Cars were actually squealing tires on most of the corners. Any loose gravel got swept away and the surface did not dig up at all.
So, a decent all season stood a better than average chance against snow/aggressive tires. And I don't think anyone ran gravel tires - way too cold for them - and a proper snow rally tire wouldn't have helped because there was no snow to bite into.

Tim
I am the tech inspector and I was not told there was no cats on the wrx. I was told there was a after market exhaust and a different sway bar.

Impossible. I have a stock exhaust and we said QTP down pipe. There was no way you couldnt tell from the noise we made that I had a QTP. Hence, I would not try to hide the fact that i had a QTP, and for me to say my exhaust was aftermarket would be a lie cause i have the stock twin tips. I was not aware cats would place me in a different class I don't believe I deceived you in anyway. I told you all my mods (minus steering rack bushings, cause i forgot those). I don't understand why an apparent miscommunication has turned into me lying about the mods in my car to move to a different class. I had no idea about what mods would constitute what class, and s1mpsons is completely unfaultable as it was my responsiblity to register my own car.

Not sure if this was covered in the previous posts, but I wanted to give you a heads-up.
I was helping Registration, and not once did I hear anyone say anything about running catless. I heard a couple of people say they had "an exhaust" which doesn't mean much overall. Kathy had waived those people on and told them to run Prepared, as you did. Next time, at the Reg booth/car, make sure you elaborate. :)
Just some friendly advice. Not trying to "get in your grill". :)

2. S1MPSONS is the f4stest rallyx'r evar FTMFW!

4. I heard the Barney the purple dinosaur forum is a good place for kids to boost their self esteem.
5. Modified 2WD cars are obviously faster than modified AWD cars in RallyX. It has nothing to do with the driver.
6. You don't have to know anything about the rules of the event you are competing in. Just show up and always trust the tech guys. Because you are just there for fun as a noob and don't care about results, results that you wouldn't post to an internet forum since you don't care about them anyway.
7. I have less tact and am more sarcastic than KC.
Don't be so hard on new people in the sport.
Apologies in advance, but I can't let this one go. (since people want to keep it going obviously anyways.)
So we're supposed to hold their hands and tell them that it's ok? That if you want to join in on ANY sport/event/function that's new to you, it's ok go do whatever you want without having done one iota of research as to how do join in and learn what you need?
Ok, fine... I'll keep that in mind.
It started out as a simple question that had a yes/no answer. Where it went from there was up to the OP. And its become kind of obvious through recent posts that those that were actually AT the event, that were asked about what class by the OP, were led astray as well.
