Weight Reduction part 26

DamnThatRevLimiter 08-22-2012 10:11 PM

on my scale at home weighted it a few times got a weight of 30.4LBS for a 2002 wrx . seems to have more metal (fog light guards) than the 04 and on bumpers ,so i guess a bugeye owner could lighten up the front a small amout just by cutting that excess off or getting a bumper from an 04-07.

bue car 08-22-2012 11:41 PM

02 bumper beams kinda look more like a brush guard for a full size truck than a 5mph crash beam ..
I think that thing can take way more impact than what it was built for , it is another example of subaru over building, i'd rather over than under cough 5-speed cough!
68Cadillac 08-23-2012 01:16 AM

FYI -

There is no weight savings to be had in the aftermarket all-aluminum radiators.

not true. my car was hit from behind by another parked car that was hit, and i went into the person in front of me barely. the 02 beam on my 07 was stressed pretty good. by bumper barely had some scratches. so i did not hit them that hard.
Jack 08-23-2012 11:07 AM

Hit by a parked car?

Was there an earthquake or tornado touching down at the time?

did you not read?

i am not trying to be a dick i just dont get it . you have a 2007 wrx you installed a 2002 front bumper beam . you were hit from behind and the rear bumper was damaged bad ?

i realize i had said bumper beam(s) , what i had ment was the front one it does look like a brush gaurd and it is really heavy, i do belive it could take more than 5mph.

I guess i dont know which bumper you had that didnt measure up. did you fron fail you or did the rear?
bue car 08-23-2012 08:42 PM

i have a 07 sti. i traded my oem beam in the front for a fmic one with a kit i bought. i sold the turbeo kit to someone and shipped it off, and needed a bumper beam, i found a local guy with a 02 for cheap. hence why i had to cut the ends of it off as my bumper hugs to the car more. anyways...

my car was in a 4 car crash, a car hit a parked car behind me, that car went into mine, and I went into the one in front of me. thats how you get hit by a parked car. only logical explanation...so...

my 02 beam that i have on my car in the front was damaged when my parked car ran into the car parked in front of me. mind you, i was parked a whole driveway over, so my car was pushed about 40 feet. :(

my new body kit does not fit with the large oem beam, so i am having one made like the guy above next week.

Damage from the pic above...you can see the stress from the small impact. Looks super beefy, not really...

My 225/45R18 Dunlop Direzza Starspec tires (26 lb) finally wore out. Thought it would look cool running a wheel and tire that big; I didn't take into account the gearing issues and the additional weight that BIG costs. I'll sell the Kosei K1-TS 18x7.5 wheels (16.2 lb) eventually.

Swapped to my old 17x8 inch Enkei RPF1 wheels (15.6 lb) from my autocross days. Wrapped in 215/40R17 Kumho Ecsta LE Sport tires (20 lb).

Better gearing at 874 revolutions per mile versus 804 rev/mile (OEM 205/55R16 rate 837 rev/mile). Removed 26.4 lb (~12kg) altogether. Shorter gearing pushing less mass. Nice. Now I'll have to do something about the wheel gap and get my Ohlins Sportlines back on. The Pink SPT springs are giving me quite the lift with all the weight I've removed from the car.

And just so you know, the wheels are powder-coated Attention Whore Red.
Str8Gone 08-31-2012 05:38 PM

Im wondering if its worth removing the dash, Ive heard there alot of sound deadening on the firewall.. its the only place I havent removed weight from lol
68Cadillac 08-31-2012 05:56 PM

Is it worth it? I thought it was:
Overall I removed:
24.0 lbs of sound padding,
8.6 lbs of sound deadening tar,
1.6 lbs of carpet padding, and
0.1 lbs of all of the above but in dust form. This is an estimate. If you've ever tried to take it all out you know that some of it breaks up into tiny little bits of sound deadening or padding "dust". You just end up vacuuming it out.

So the grand total ended up weighing 34.3 lbs]. Sweet Neil deGrasse Tyson, that's a lot of mass removed!

If I was able to get the stuff blocked by the HVAC it would have ended up weighing ~35.4 lbs (16.0 kg).
bue car 08-31-2012 06:12 PM

im pulling the carpet on my 95 tomorrow, so I shall remove that crap too. then put my new ebay carpet in lol

I got the steering wheel out and the seat bags haven't done the dash yet
68Cadillac 09-04-2012 10:18 PM

I'd like to say the dash one is the heaviest. I've never removed mine.
sorrowfulkiller 09-05-2012 12:03 PM

I removed mine when I took the dash out to remove the stock fuel lines, the thing feels like 7-10 lbs

Swapping the Front Lower Control Arms on the wagon for the aluminum ones off an STi. Seller said they were "JDM", and that he "Imported them from Japan". Whatever. Paid him the USDM price.

They look like 2004-2006 STi/2006 WRX control arms to me. EDIT: Apparently they're 2007 USDM STi

The JDM STi arms didn't have the extra castor of the Spec C, or the USDM '04-'06 STi arms. The '07 STI didn't ether.

It also looks like you didn't get the steel cones for the ball joints.

There is a big front control arm thread with some pictures.

How can I tell which ones I have? Is there a casting mark or something?
It also looks like you didn't get the steel cones for the ball joints.
Didn't notice that. Hopefully I can pick those up at the dealer easy.
How can I tell which ones I have? Is there a casting mark or something?
You have USDM 07 STi control arms. There is a casting mark of sorts. Near the tab where the sway bar mounts would be more of a diamond shape rather than the straight line.
RRR 09-13-2012 06:27 AM

What a thread.. Inspired, Ive read the whole thing now (took 1 month, gave me 2 pages of work to do  ).

Anyways, there is so much fuzz on these bumper beams, and for the record these appear to be USDM only. European cars dont have them as far as I can tell, checked 2 now (GD).

Anyone with the windscreen washer fluid in the trunk? How do you route it? I suppose the intercooler spray line would work, but I dont have that....

Im quite worried about wheight distribution. These things are 60/40 stock, and 3/4 of the wheight removed in this thread appear to go from the rear... Good excuse for keeping that big rear wing though. Ill also go for the battery in the trunk, I feel those extra oz of wire is worth the slightly better distribution.
68Cadillac 09-13-2012 11:42 AM

There is a good amount of weight that can be removed from the front half of the car. Problem is it's harder to remove. It's either more time consuming or costs more money. The low hanging fruit is in the rear half. Other than the offset frontal crash u-beam which is fairly easy and significant.
RRR 09-17-2012 02:38 PM

I just replaced my wheel nuts with Rays engeneering light weight nuts. I dont have a scale to measure such low weights, but the steel nuts weigh a ton, and the Rays weigh next to nothing! And its unsprung at the far ends of the car, so a good mod indeed. Wild guess, 100grams.

Oh and I felt a serious increase in power
vicious_fishes 09-19-2012 03:29 AM

up front off the top of my head:

bumper beam 12kg
subframe 12kg
AC 10kg
battery 9kg
steel bonnet to alloy if you had a steel: 7kg

i mean there's 100lbs for you turbo guys straight off the bat for a sum total of about 100 bucks for another battery. or near 80lbs for nothing. 50kg for the n/a folks. then you can pull the firewall sound deadening for another 7-8kg. remove the passenger seat on track days for 20kg. airbags would be at least another 10kg if you want to get rid of those as well.

then there's another 20kg stripping the boot out with the spare wheel etc. spend some money on a stainless exhaust and there's another 25kg to go no problems. you yanks have rear bumper beams that are another 12kg. there's about 3kg in the bar under the rear seat too.

you can pull 10% of the weight out of these cars very practically without much effort at ALL.
bue car 09-20-2012 01:26 AM

My LW beam - I will be able to weight it soon.

Gained 187 grams :(, but my front's stiff.

I'm preparing for a local HPDE and wanted to remove a bit more. I plan on taking out the rear seats and the passenger seat for the event.

Rear WRX Wagon 60/40 fold down seats w/o headrests 18.42 kg. Removed for HPDE only, you haters.

Also plan to leave all of the cargo area padding and cover behind. 4.08 kg. I'll put all this back in after HPDE.

The reason I had the seats out was to get at rest of the child safety seat anchors from the Right Rear. 451 grams Removed.
