What about the other 06 STI Under Body Parts? part 1

Jpapania 11-25-2005 09:27 AM

What about the other 06 STI Under Body Parts?
So I know everyone is going ga ga for the 06 diffuser, but what about the other under body parts? Could these bolt up to an 04 Wagon and has anyone tried it yet? Wonder what the cost would be?

Which pieces are new on the 06? I know the rear diffuser is new. I don't have the little panel in the center behind the front wheels.

TheBlueRex 11-26-2005 03:48 PM

Anyone know how they attach? I know that they fit up nicely... just that there are no holes on the 04s and such. :) Just curious if anyone has done this before I would start drilling into the car.

Thanks!
Jpapania 11-26-2005 04:55 PM

I was wondering about having to drill holes as well to mount on an 04. Please let me know how these would attach on earlier models. I need to crawl underneath my wagon becuase I don't think I even have the front under engine piece.

Jamie can you share part numebers so we can look up pricing on your site :) Thank you.
TheBlueRex 11-27-2005 11:27 AM

Anyone know how to attach these things?

Oh... Japapania, the part numbers for the side panels are:

Not sure about the front one. Also... have not been able to find the one that seems to go over the transmission... not sure if it is available on a USDM one.

Hey, the 04 and 05 STi have the side panels all ready. The only new panels the 06 has is the rear diffuser and the mid panel under the tranny.

I will try to take a look at it at some point this week and hopefully we can figure it out. :)

Thanks Jamie!

Hoping this is a just a "button in" operation :)
Jpapania 11-28-2005 10:15 PM

Can one of you guys with the 05 STIs see how the larger side pieces mount. It is a long shot but I was hoping there would be no drilling to mount them on an 04 wagon.
matay 11-29-2005 12:10 AM

wt about the front and end piece..wts the part # on them?
TheBlueRex 11-29-2005 12:42 PM

I was under the car last night looking at the 06 under panels. Looks like the only way to get them to attach is to drill holes in the frame stiffening peices that are there. Then probably using some pop-its to keep it on. Fitment wise... it mates right up and looks like it shouldn't be that bad. Will just have to make sure that you do something to protect the metal that you are exposing.

AFAIK the front peice would only fit the 06 as I beleive that the nose is longer than previous years.
BIGSKYWRX 11-29-2005 03:05 PM

I was hoping you were going to say all the holes line up perfectly :) Do any of the holes match up to anything? I see Jamie lists quite a variety of hardware- was hoping something might lineup if for no other reason than to get it aligned correctly.

If you do this, would you be so kind as to snap a couple of pics? Would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Under body diffuser
Will all the modifications to get the underbody panel in for <06 WRX be worth it? Will the difference be significant? I know it will reduce the underbody turbulence, but by how much? Will an average driver who takes the car to recreational Auto-x, rallyx, drag racing, canyon driving notice the difference?

I guess your WRX will look nicer from the bottom up. :p
BIGSKYWRX 11-29-2005 08:18 PM

I think you'll notice at speed ie track days- autox/ralyx probably not- canyon run possibly.

The 06 Spec C set a new record at Nurburgring- I'm guessing the additional aero bits didn't hurt :)
fasterthanurwrx 11-30-2005 01:03 AM

Hey guys

I ordered the lower rear defuser for my 05 STi...

Everything lines up, but my 05 is missing 3 (i think) holes to bolt the unit on...
I don't really want to drill into something that could be gas tank...

What do you guys think?
pleue 11-30-2005 01:12 AM

youll be drilling into the spare tire well, gas tank is under the rear seat. simple really. drill for the two back holes, take the spare out first, middle hole isn't necessary. use longer bolts than the ones that came with it and some fender washers. I installed mine on a 2002 wagon with no problems. just a bit unerving to drill into your car. search for the subject and theres a whole 10 page thread on it.

I was helping TheBlueRex line them up the other night and there are no holes that line up for the side pieces. There is a clip in the front that slides into the end of the subframe. All the holes will have to be drilled. I have not talked to Thebluerex about it yet, but wanted to try to fit them on Saturday.

The 05 sti has the sides(although I hear they are different than the 06's), but not the rear or mid-front.
theicewall 11-30-2005 09:26 PM

The little one next to the downpipe just looks like a PITA when it comes time for an oil change. The side panels along with the rear diffuser could potentially smooth out the underflow a little bit and at a minimum provide a little extra protection.
BIGSKYWRX 11-30-2005 09:40 PM

The front ones increased in size on the 04+'s you have to take the front splash guard off to change your oil (at least I do?)- unlike the 02/03's. Kind of a pain, but am guessing they increased size on it for aero purposes.

I don't think the middle one would be in the way????
theicewall 11-30-2005 11:57 PM

I dont take mine off... the oil drain plug is further back, and i can get the oil filter just fine with the skid plate on there. The small amount that drips out drips onto the top of the skid plate and its angled and had a hole so that it can drain into the oil drain pan on the floor as well. Then i just give the thing a quick wipe and im good to go.
shemoves 12-01-2005 12:28 AM

The '05 STi has the front most panel (tray under engine) and the side panels (long pieces under foot wells). It does not have the rear diffuser or the smaller piece that runs near the downpipe, just behind the front wheels.

Shoot. I completely forgot about this thread. Sorry guys.

We got them mounted and fitted last week sometime...maybe it was the week before. He ordered the sides and rear, both of which we installed. There is already instructions for the rear so I will cover the sides only here. If you have questions about the rear though let me know.

Sides Install: (we will have pics later)

So you have the sides that you ordered and want to install them. First thing I would do (if you haven't already) is order the hadware kit from Subaru. I am not sure if there is an actual kit to install it, but Jamie (subiegal) recommended we get some "pop-it's" - 16 of them; we used 14 as that is all we ordered (these are the plastic clip things that hold half of our cars together, I don['t know what they are actually called) and 4 bolts for the install.

1. Hold the panels up where they will be mounted. They fit rather well into the area so you should easily be able to tell where they need to go. Make sure they are agaisnt the side as much as possible. We found that they wanted to keep sliding towards the inside of the car which caused to have to remark holes a few times.
2. Once in place mark the center of all holes in the plastic with a sharpie or other tool.
3. Using a 7/16's drill bit (this is the best size we found to match the plastic clips that we had) drill the holes. There are 8 per side that could use the clips. We only drilled 7 as we were short 2 plastic clips. Take care when drilling the holes as if you go too far you will go into the floor pan...which is not good. This is actually difficult to explain; there was a screw and a small white plastic box that also came with the install kit that we didn't use as we didn't use as we couldn't figure out the best way to get the plastic box that the screw screws into to stay where it needed to be. Instead we would receommend using another plastic clip per side.
4. Once all the holes are drilled hold up the plastic piece and install the clips. You will be amazed how solid it feels once these are in place.
5. There are two more holes that need to be drilled in the front of the piece. The holes are for the 4 bolts that come with the install kit. They are m6x1.0 bolts. We drilled the holes with the closet bit to that size thread then tapped the holes and install the bolts. Do not over torque these are there are not many threads holding them in.

that is the install for the most part. I iwll post pics when I get them as that will help clarify what is going on. It is an easy install and very straight forward, but tiring. Drilling that many holes is difficult when laying on the floor.

Let me know if you have any questions; this write seems really confusing for some reason.

Was there any preexisting mounting location or was it a 100% eyeball installation?

They were installed on an 04 sti. I have looked at the 05 sti peices, but not in detail so I couldn't tell you how these differ.

There are no pre-existing mounts at all, but the pieces are shaped in such a way that it is easy to tell where they go.

I am taking the baby step and doing the rear diffuser this weekend. I went the cusco bar route so I will let everyone know how this goes on a 04 wagon. Would really like to do the sides as well, an extra 1 to 2 MPG is pretty darn good and also means the car is probably a lot more stable at speed. Did anyone every find a part number for the very front piece? I know the transmission one is MIA from the parts catalog.
