What autocross class do you race...and why part 2

PKer 06-19-2006 02:30 PM

STX because Sortor said it best "STX is where WRXs are born, grow up, and die."
The_Wolf 06-19-2006 02:37 PM

AS (on stock street tires...right now...r comps soon I think)

1. First year in a subie (or any awd car for that matter). I want to get the feel of the car before I start modding.
2. Lots of people run AS in my region...not many in stu or bsp. It's more fun when you have lots of competition in class.
3. I get to "compete" with the 2005 AS national champ and his wife (who is just as fast in the same car).
Calamity Jesus 06-19-2006 02:38 PM
i think it's cheaper to buy a set of street tires for the street only and have them last 25k miles instead of 10k, and buy race rubber and wheels.
Considering the low prices of some of the decent ST tires, it's no cheaper to use a separate set of wheels with expensive race tires.. and some of us like buying new ST tires every year. Tires, especially race tires, have a limited shelf life.

Oh, I also like that my Hankook RS-2s will grip more than enough to be fun, but still won't do nearly as much damage to my wheel bearings as R comps.
ein86 06-19-2006 02:42 PM

stx(n)....cause thats what they told me
Sideshowbob 06-19-2006 02:47 PM
so for most of you street tired guys...the reason your not running in anouther class is the tires????..interesting...some of it is the mods too..
It's mostly a combo of Mods and tires. To run stock, the car has to look like a monster truck, handle less than optimally on the road, and you still need to plunk down a crapton for V710's and wheels.
the more interesting thing is ...I bought my car with Autox in mind...so I have taylored my mods accordingly
I bought mine with fun and durability in mind. It has served me well on both accounts. However, I have tailored my mods to STX to avoid the devil (SM).

Stock classes suck for Subaru's IMO, because of the initial investment to be comptetitive is large (V710's plus wheels, FSB and Koni's), and the car isnt nearly as much fun on the street as a BSP, STX, STU or SM car is.
Chiketkd 06-19-2006 02:49 PM

DS in my stock '06 WRX on summer tires. Adding a Whiteline 27/29mm bar this weekend and r-comps hopefully in a couple of months.
loworbitSI 06-19-2006 02:50 PM

I could run in BSP, and win every local event.
Only because no one runs in BSP locally.
There's a consistant gambit of 14-19 regulars in SM.
Hence, there's competition and I run SM.
Butt Dyno 06-19-2006 02:50 PM
so for most of you street tired guys...the reason your not running in anouther class is the tires????..interesting...some of it is the mods too...
Both... I like that if I'm too lazy to swap the Azenis on for the smaller events, I can run my RE070 summer tires and still do OK. I have an '03 WRX so locally my options are:
-DS: that lasted a few months, but the urge to mod got me, usually 8-10 people
-STX: usually around 15 people, Greg sets a nice benchmark, lots of nice folks
-ESP: I don't have $10K to throw at the car to run ESP, and can't imagine why I would want to do that when I can have just as much fun, and can learn just as much, in STX. Usually 5-6 people.
-SM: $$$, usually 15-20 people
the more interesting thing is ...I bought my car with Autox in mind...so I have taylored my mods accordingly...seems alot of you bought the car..then got invovled with AutoX after the fact...or you did mods....then you sorta "fell" into a class...
I left the car stock (er, D-stock legal) for 9 months or so. I was already hooked by the time I decided to run STX so I've been tailoring as well. Much cheaper than what I would have done with the car if I didn't autox :)
StuBeck 06-19-2006 02:57 PM

HS, my car is stock.
zzyzx 06-19-2006 03:07 PM

Well, looks like I had to vote FP. That said, I'll bet I'm the only person in the US autox'ing a Subie on real race tires*. :)

*Disclaimer: Though it's fun, I don't recommend it.
deluxsti 06-19-2006 03:24 PM

by that do you mean a full slick? i heard that you cannot run those out at autocross?

You most certainly can...
by that do you mean a full slick? i heard that you cannot run those out at autocross?
yes, he means slicks and they are perfectly legal and widely used in Prepared and Modified.

well Steve, if I ever auto-x my car again, it would be in FP too, despite being slower than it was in GS trim
rautox 06-19-2006 04:12 PM

STX last year, agreeing with everything buttdyno said. F125 this year and for the foreseeable, pretty much starting from scratch
Pacobeagle 06-19-2006 05:20 PM

I currently run in SM because I came across some good deals on used parts and took the bait and bought them(sucker). Now, I've added even more goodies and I'm trying to hone my skills to go to Nationals!!!! SM rocks.
MattNJ2.8 06-19-2006 05:30 PM

AS... next year, B$P
wm07 06-19-2006 05:39 PM

I run STU because R-compounds are expensive :) and also I am able to drive to an event and race without changing out the wheels. Besides, I believe STi can't compete with Evos in BSP because of unlimited boost and turbo size. [/flame suit on]
zzyzx 06-19-2006 05:47 PM
I run STU because R-compounds are expensive :)
Priced a set of Advan Neovas lately? :alien:
ChrisW 06-19-2006 05:51 PM
Besides, I believe STi can't compete with Evos in BSP because of unlimited boost and turbo size. [/flame suit on]
same argument with the EVO against the corvettes which is why I compete in SM. I basically got tired of the SP politics and rule restrictions.

Of course now I measure my success on how many seconds I am trailing behind the leading trailer queen BMW....
AndrewSS 06-19-2006 06:00 PM

STU, mainly I made the move to STU (last season I was AS) because locally (ohio valley region) STU is now fun to drive in, we have about 8 cars that always make it (STi's a Evo, a LGT, and a RX8). It is fun to do some modding, but STU is nice because you can make a STi competitive without doing a whole lot, but I guess it starts to add up quick ;).

Anyway, STU has been great so far this season!
deluxsti 06-19-2006 06:04 PM

unlimited boost?
Whiteghost 2.5 06-19-2006 07:08 PM

DSP, because of built motor, big R-Comps and trying to beat the BMW's. Also I like the challenge of doing more with much less. Can't wait for Nationals!!
deluxsti 06-19-2006 07:26 PM

you can have a built motor in DSP? i thought they were illegal in any street prepared class
Whiteghost 2.5 06-19-2006 07:34 PM

built within the standard rebuild specs, max over bore of .47 and gasket matching, and milling heads, decking block, forged pistons, etc.
Minimaul 06-19-2006 08:05 PM

my first race (so far) was a general stock race, because, um, that's what they put me in. haha.
SloRice 06-19-2006 11:22 PM

SM for me.....because a thread I made a year or two ago said a STI would never be nationally competative in SM and I'm bound and determined to prove them wrong. :p
flyboymike 06-19-2006 11:58 PM

I bought the wagon because I needed a car that could do two things: haul all my stuff and be competitive somewhere in autocross. STX looked like the class where the car had the most potential. I'm not going to be in a position to have a dedicated race car for I'm not sure how long. With further time in the class, I don't think there's a better place for the 2.0L WRX to play if they want both a fun daily driver and conebasher for minimal green. I got to address the WRX's shortcomings with modifications instead of laying out big money for 710's. Now, I probably don't have a National-winning car, and since it will remain my daily driver, I might not ever, but it's enough such that when the driver catches up, I should be able to do well locally.

And just because I like whoring out my thread about my autocrossing experiences: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=856493
yosemitemtb 06-20-2006 12:13 AM

STX because I don't have to change tires when I get to the race, plus it's fun to get to race against a few other guys as opposed to some of the classes with fewer racers in my region.
Skibum4444 06-20-2006 12:29 AM

STX its the car for the class. And I do change tires at events. Yokes are to expensive to burn on the street.
Storm 06-20-2006 01:05 AM

DSP because the car is more fun in this configuration than STS and I like pushing the the RS outside the perceived limits. This will be my last year in this car fulltime as I'm working on an FSP project (which doesn't appear to be a poll option either) for the L. Hopefully I'll get to run it later this season and make a charge next season.

Jay Storm
SPOOLN 06-20-2006 01:58 AM

SM also here, I drive to the events on V710's,no need to swap out. Car is no longer a daily driver. So daily comfort went out the window a long time ago. But it will take a lot more than that to be competitive for me in the future.
scobaru 06-20-2006 02:21 AM

street tire street mod...because i'm swapped and i'm allowed to do almost anything and street mod class is to competive for me
Imprezivblue 06-20-2006 07:45 AM

STS or STX because tires are cheap and i'm a poor college student. V710's however are like crack because I love race tires but don't have a race tire budget. I'll break down one of these days . . . I'm lucky to be able to do what I currently do with the car and autoxing. This year i'm a bit distracted anyway.
Scooby South 06-20-2006 07:57 AM

I find it fasinating that these '#'s represent our community...I never realized that over "HALF" of you guys run street tire classes...makes sense..to bad that everybody that autocrosses Subaru's can't get to the poll or not on line... ti get a true representation of who's who in the zoo...Keep it going tho..I would like get as many people as possible to respond...

thanks for the effort so far..:)

Pretty crazy, eh Bill......

anyway

DS for me - cuz someone needs to run there.:D
RollingOnAll4 06-20-2006 08:45 AM

SM for the "Dirty Whore"...Turbo kit puts me in there but once i put the 22 block in i believe im out of SM
mofugga 06-20-2006 08:54 AM

sts cause i can't afford r-comps & the car just wasn't fun enough in stock trim.

i think you forgot EM in the poll
KC 06-20-2006 08:57 AM

BS... cuz there are no Subarus in the class.
slowWS6 06-20-2006 09:00 AM
Just kinda wanted to see where most folks are running...and see who's in what class competition wise..

Sorry KC...no BS...

Scooby's only..;)
:p

I run BSP right now, 'cause that's the sweetest Subie ride in the country. ;)

Followed closely by STS with Billy Brooks's car.

Otherwise, FS.... because.... well.... I sort of own two FS cars.

Karen

[edit] : oh snap! Pat's actually logged in!!

I was going to stay in STX to keep my expenses under control. Then I rode along in Pacobeagle1's car and caught that disease that makes people spend > 50% of their new car's price on mods...
gh32 06-20-2006 10:44 AM

STX

For me, it was a investment vs. fun-on-the-street issue. I would run in DS, as it would be the least expensive money-wise, but I'm ready for more power for everyday driving. My guess is that I would run in AS if/when I get an STi.
thorongil 06-20-2006 12:03 PM

STX: I just ran my first autocross this weekend, and my few fun suspension mods put me in STX. Currently, I aim to improve as a driver, which could be difficult as STX is a rather small class in my region. Later, I'll probably add a few power mods, but I'd like to keep it affordable and maintain drivability and reliability, which seems to fit the spirit of the ST* classes.
Student Driver 06-20-2006 12:11 PM

Bill
Not quite. I bought the car to run STX because I liked the class and the mods made the car more fun on the road. The other thing is I hate changing tires and owning/maintaining two sets of wheels and tires. :)
Student Driver 06-20-2006 12:14 PM
Priced a set of Advan Neovas lately? :alien:
Yep, and they still cost more than Hankook R-S2 and Azenis 615 tires...

;)
Scooby921 06-20-2006 12:27 PM

Unfortunately the Advan's are the best of both worlds so the high price is somewhat justified...

They've more or less copied the tread pattern from Hankook, but added the stiff sidewall from the older Azenis 215. All of the grip and better turn-in / transition handling.

I'm thinking about spending the cash just to give them a try.
thrdeye 06-20-2006 12:33 PM

STX because

1 - Turbo lag sucks
2 - You munch race tires in Dstock because you can't get any camber in the car.
3 - It allowed me to mod the car, have fun with it, personalize it, and learn a lot about it.
4 - The car is competitive in STX and I like driving with the thought that I can win if I extract my head from my ass properly.
5 - Street tires are cheaper and you don't have to worry so much about them losing a ton of grip through heat cycles. Still happens, but not as bad as race tires.
6 - Mods are limited which keeps you from spending a crap ton of money.
WRblueSTI 06-20-2006 04:18 PM

BSP

cause:
a) i wanted to turn the boost up i my car
b) i don't want to spend the $$$ to run SM
c) that's where SP STI's go
d) i like to beat on wrx8xb ;)
e) i like R-comps

why??
boost ++ , and hoosiers

STU because of my mods for right now, maybe something else if the mod path turns out that way. Autox is a hobby for me, not a religion like it seems like for most of you guys ;) I don't care about being nationally/regionally competitive.. I just want to make myself a better driver and make my car the way I want it.

Bill

STU

Because that's what Henry runs his car in! (plus the cheaper street tires)
Slick Nick 06-20-2006 08:32 PM

Time Only!

Only because of the mods done to the car by the previous owner. Debadging would put me in STS but the lightened flywheel puts me in DSP. I don't know where you go if you do both so I don't want to monkey with anyonese times by misclassing myself. Not that it would really matter since I (as a driver) am not competitive in any of the classes.

Where would I like to be?
GS. Really though I'm not going to beat the Mini's especially not with Mini drivers who have national trophies. I am a poor student and even with R-comps this still seems like the cheapest way of doing things. It would require removing ALL of the mods from my car (luckily I still have the OEM pieces). All this work to return to stock combined with the fact that after that I don't believer I can be the Minis but my competitive self wants me to race in a category where I might have a chance leaves me a little lost.

So is a 2.5RS competitive anywhere? I know the '89 Civic Si rules STS but the local (NWR) STS champ is a 2.5RS driver. What about DSP? Or even after putting ALL of that money into the car will it still be a lost cause?

(All of this is purely academic at this stage as I need to improve a LOT as a driver for the mods really to be worth it).

Thanks.

-Nick

PS. I am aware this is a slight hijack but a few others have done it already so I thought, "hey, why not?" :)
