What autocross class do you race...and why part 1

Scooby South 06-19-2006 08:31 AM

What autocross class do you race...and why
I race BSP in a 05 STi because the mods I have on my car suit the class I run...

Bill
Scooby South 06-19-2006 08:35 AM

Just kinda wanted to see where most folks are running...and see who's in what class competition wise..

Sorry KC...no BS...

Scooby's only..;)
speedyHAM 06-19-2006 08:47 AM

I run SM due to an engine swap, everything else I have is STX legal (suspension, gauges, seat). '96 Impreza L coupe. I'm not really going to be competitive, maybe locally, but it's fun.
jamesohoh7 06-19-2006 09:05 AM

STU, but only b/c I'm too cheap to buy 710's and race AS b/c my car is otherwise AS legal. But, I'm considering a switch to AS maybe later this year or next "just to see what it's like in the DOT-R world".

That, and locally, STU might as well be called 'Subaru Touring Ultra' b/c it's pretty much just Subies anyway... which is more fun to race with than the regular AS stuff in my area (boxsters, s2ks, etc... ), and I happen to know all the Suby folk anyway.
WRX8XB 06-19-2006 09:13 AM

I run BSP b/c I can be competitive locally without dumping a bunch of money into new turbo, injectors, ect.

plus BSP is for all the cool people! :D
Pez222 06-19-2006 09:15 AM

SCCA- STS due to my mods and NA... since I've been running w/ NASA lately... F-Class due to the make/model and point totals for my mods.
leecea 06-19-2006 09:23 AM

DS because I had constant back pain daily driving with 8K/10K springs :(
solo-x 06-19-2006 09:26 AM

STS. dang BMW's in DSP and no $$$$ to go SP or P.
forced4 06-19-2006 09:33 AM

STX cuz my car is prepared for that class. duh.
rankink 06-19-2006 09:43 AM

A-Stock. Reasons being AS has a good amount of top drivers in the class where I run (nat champs included). As well as it allows the car to be kept as stock as possible for warranty issues and less headaches overall. The final being it is the cheapest for me to run in and be competitive compared to STU, SM, BSP, etc. Just buy a 2nd set of wheels, tires every 7 months or so, front bar, existing cat back and a race harness.
rankink 06-19-2006 09:47 AM

I went to STU for a single event yesterday because I corded my v710's just a couple of weeks ago. All I can say about it is I want my r-comps back. Street tires... The horror... :)
Sideshowbob 06-19-2006 09:54 AM

I like ST* because I can use the tires on the street, and the car is prepped to the point where it is streetable and fun (both on the street and at autoX).
Jaxx 06-19-2006 09:56 AM

sm motor swap ..i am with in 100 lbs of min weight though
tradionaly i am dead center of the field in pax and raw time

Wow...there sure is alot of you Street tire guys...

interesting for sure...thanks...keep it going..

Bill
Rasmusson14 06-19-2006 10:40 AM

STX because it seems like the most street-able way to prep my car and keep it as a D.D. with some comfort.

......Also because I have a good local driver to chase and learn from as I am a nOOb when I comes to prepping a car and then driving it to it's max potential. :p Thanks 78STX :)

what about the novice class? i still run that because ive only been twice and suck real bad :)
Student Driver 06-19-2006 11:05 AM

STX because:

1. It's the cheapest class that the car is competitive in (too many bimmers in DS)
2. It can be reasonably competitive locally while comfortable to drive (mild springs, decent swaybars, boost-less tune, seats, etc.).
3. Too lazy and cheap to buy (and change) a second set of racing wheels and tires for 3-4 min of seat time.

There are some mods I would like to do, like the steering rack and swapping the brake booster, but I still like being competitive in my class and don't have the money and inclination to make a huge jump into a higher class.

Novice isn't a class... it's a sub-class. What class are you within 'Novice'?
solo-x 06-19-2006 11:10 AM

oh wait, forgot that i'm running CM this year. why? it's a single seat formula car on slicks. 'nuff said. this thing is so 'right' that even though i'm sucking it up big time in the car i STILL have a crap load of fun.
jamesohoh7 06-19-2006 11:23 AM

"Once I go 'DOT-R', I can't go back to 'streets', Arrrr!" /Pirate-Rhyme, FTW! :)
silver arrow 06-19-2006 11:33 AM

STU because I want a reasonably streetable car.
afpdl 06-19-2006 11:34 AM

STU because Im too cheap for 710s and the rest of BSP bsp prep.
BlkWRXWag 06-19-2006 11:34 AM

STU - because that is the only class where the STI is competitive Nationally without spending a ridiculous amount of money. Also, locally, we have a great STU turnout... usually 10 - 20 cars per event.
waktasz 06-19-2006 11:40 AM

STU because the mods I did on my car for daily driving put me in that class (springs, sways, wider wheels, short shifter) It's definitely an uphill battle against the STIs and EVOs in this class though.
Scooby South 06-19-2006 11:43 AM
Where the option for XP?
hmmmm...theres only 10 options...:)

I didn't realize "ANY" of us were actually competeing in XP...

so +1 for other...

GS - because I still incorrectly believe that a 2.5RS can beat the evil MINIs.
WRXedUSA 06-19-2006 11:52 AM

AS for the $$
Mhyrr 06-19-2006 12:00 PM

STX, because I like being an underdog.
Scooby921 06-19-2006 12:14 PM

I run STX becuase there are more rules. It keeps the cost down and the competition up. You can only go so far with mods, so its more of a driver's class. And since its usually overpopulated and dominated by WRX's, its just that much more fun to race against all your friends and other forum members.

I consistently finish 2nd or 3rd to angryfist (and whoever co-drives his car) at all of the local events. We all know his car is well prepped and has won national level events. Its a thrill anytime I can shave a few tenths off the difference!
mccanixx 06-19-2006 12:16 PM
STX, because I like being an underdog.
I wouldn't call a well prepped BMW, with a good driver an underdog in STX. Even if it does require the occasional jump start ;) .

STX for me. Seems to be a good place for the WRX, that's why they made it right? With all the turbo friendly exhaust mods [ devils advocate ]. The class, not the car.

ESP in 2008. Funds providing. And assuming SP survives, and isn't rolled into some kind of SM classing. Now there I'll appreciate being the underdog.
xrocket21 06-19-2006 12:19 PM

I run in BSP, but I dont have the cash for r-compunds and im getting smoked. What would I have to get rid of to run in stu or stx?

I currently have rsb, springs, water injection, catless tbe and a protune. Isnt there an stu map? what is legal in stu? I just want to run in a street tire class.
Scooby South 06-19-2006 12:24 PM

^^^^^^water inj and catless TB...thats what you would have to get rid of to run STU...
Scooby South 06-19-2006 12:25 PM

See...all the front mount guys that have removed the stock Bumper beam...should be running in FP...I know of about a half dozen right off the top of my head..

Bill
Scooby South 06-19-2006 12:31 PM

so for most of you street tired guys...the reason your not running in anouther class is the tires????..interesting...some of it is the mods too...

the more interesting thing is ...I bought my car with Autox in mind...so I have taylored my mods accordingly...seems alot of you bought the car..then got invovled with AutoX after the fact...or you did mods....then you sorta "fell" into a class...

Very interesting stuff. tho..Keep it up..

Bill
xenonk 06-19-2006 12:40 PM

STS is the only class that requires street tires.. it's not everyday that everyone can run on Hoosiers, so it's more of a "real" world comparison of what the car can really do.

Also, it's fairly cheap and a very daily driveable car without the real need to swap tires when you show up at an event.

i think it's cheaper to buy a set of street tires for the street only and have them last 25k miles instead of 10k, and buy race rubber and wheels.

Interesting thoughts.

I bet it's a pretty low percentage, Subaru at least, who purchased their cars for auto-x.

Tires weren't a factor for me. I ran in DS with r-comps, was the 2.0l WRX competitive in DS? Not with me in it.

When I began to prep for STX the STI/EVO's were put in ESP, would the 2.0l have been competitive there? Not with me in it.

Yes, alot of people just mod, show up, and wonder what class they're in. Sure you got a STI hood scoop, reversed and rotated GT30. Yep, come on in you're in STX because that's where the bulk of the Subarus' are. Then the crying begins when they realize their in SM. One mod to put them there, and none of them to make them competitive there.

I wouldn't call them street tire classes as much as, People who lobby tire companies to make R-comps with some tread, label them as street tires, shave them, then have 2 sets for rain, trailer their cars, and pretend they're in a r-comp class.
deluxsti 06-19-2006 12:50 PM

BSP bc of protune and hoosiers
Scoob5555 06-19-2006 01:04 PM

STS because of the competition around here (NNJR, SJR, Philly). Routinely 10-18 cars in Philly and NNJR.

I bought my 96 L specifically to use it for everything - DD and autox. Slowly but surely I'm getting it fully STS prepared. And I keep the same tires on (Kooks).

Exactly..

Let me rephrase...I bought my car ...then when I modded it...my class in AutoX is what I built it for..and yes AutoX was in the back of my mind when I bought the car...:)...I didn't just buy the car for AutoX...just to clear that up..

BSP because its way more fun than a GS RS

oh, and the only way I'd not run on R comps is to run on proper slicks :D
05GrayWRX 06-19-2006 01:05 PM

ESP with springs, swaybars, endlinks, short shifter, street tires and the dreaded AccessPort that I refuse to give up that bumped me out of the ST* classes. My first year so I didn't plan on being competitive anyway. Might make some more changes at end of season and do ST* next year.

Thanks.. and leave my crappy battery alone! :D

I do consider it a bit of an underdog, but I guess I was especially referring to Pros. Tours and Topeka will be interesting, but we (the Minis, me, and Chang were all within a tenth to 60') were giving up a full second total to 200' to your pesky AWD cars. Our driveline's might not break as often, but dayum those things launch HARD  Plus, I have the worst power-to-weight ratio in the class except for Chang Ho Kim (barely).

One thing Peru definitely did - it made me realize I have a ways to go in car prep.. all you guys were prepped to the max! It was really an impressive field to look at and run with it. :disco:

The accessport, used correctly, does not have to bump you out of ST. Unless you just enjoy boosting, which in that case, I commend you for running your appropriate class. :)

Not a Suby, but..........my buddy and I already knew we wanted an '89 Civic strictly for auto-x and once I saw what THoppe did in Wagners Si at a Pro, I figured STX might be an interesting path to take.

We launched hard for 21 of the scheduled 36 launches I guess. :furious: Be glad that you don't snap the drivetrain components like we do. It really makes your weekend suck, but then again it makes it clear why most of us now trailer our ST cars to events. Life would have really sucked if we had broken that rear diff 5+ hours from home with no trailer to get back.

And you must have about double Chang's torque even if you do have 1000 pounds more weight for it to haul around.

I bought my STi with autocrossing in mind 1st, and as a upgrade from my STX WRX 2nd. I knew from the beginning that I was going to buy a set of r-comp tires and run it in A-stock for a couple years, or at least until the warranty was gone. These reason in addition to it being a fun DD with plenty of power and practicality (4 doors and a good sized trunk). Probably still keep it in stock class through 2007 as well.
Mirage 06-19-2006 02:19 PM

STS because I'm racing with what I've got/done to my car already prior to autoxing and we started using SCCA rules up here this year.:p

Unless you're going for top-end ST tires like Neovas, Falken 615's (the tire for 'the rest of us' ) are cheaper than DOT-R's in 245/17 sizes.

I still think it's more convenient to swap tires at home the day before the event, at a leisurely pace... vs. lugging dot-r's to the track to change them there, twice in the same afternoon, and perhaps in a huge rush if time is pressing (I live about 50 or 60 miles from the main autox venue, traffic can really play havoc some days, like if I'm in the afternoon heat).

However, the idea of not having to mod the car much at all (should I go into AS in the future) is intriguing on a budgetary level. The only major expense is tires... well, rims too, but I already have a 2nd set of rims. I'm one of the ST guys that has a set of 'dedicated for autox' street-tires (that I still daily drive on a lot b/c I'm too lazy to change out after an event  ) to race on.

Then again, I might also be swayed by the prospect of having some of those mods that make the car more fun, day-to-day... (power mods, for example).

Argh.. this why I'll probably do nothing and stay in STU in a very lightly modded car... the worst of all worlds! :(
kiefer 06-19-2006 02:24 PM

SM because I didn't have a cat. Just had one welded in by DSG, so now I'll be in STX (03 WRX).
