who knows of a higher quality carpet kit
So I am officially tired of the crappy low quality carpet that comes in our cars. Does anybody know of a better kit? The carpet is my biggest beef with the quality of the interior and I am going to try and change it.
Sugar, WRXgirl, anybody???? Do you have any solutions for me?

I made a few calls to aftermarket carpet manufacturers and NOBODY does/would do a high quality molded carpet for an Impreza. The demand just isn't there, they said.
I think the best bet is a non-molded carpet. Somebody can be a guinea pig and get an interior shop to take out the factory molded POS and make a multi-piece replacement from high quality foam-backed cut pile. Then, do a group buy and see how cheap the shop will make copies.
[Edit: I have a local shop that did a new headliner for my Audi. Just for instance: how much would you pay for a Porsche-quality custom fit install-it-yourself carpet set? No embroidery or anything, just top quality gray carpet.]

As silly as it sounds - I would gladly pay up to $500 for a quality replacement. I too am extremely frustrated by this low-grade floor cover.
I enquired with quite a few aftermarket companies on the web - same response.
The good thing is that the interior carpet is only $90 from SubaruParts. I would gladly buy one to give to a competent carpet company.
Either way - if anyone makes any headway - count me in. I would enjoy my car so much more if I didn't have to look at that crap every morning - and this is on a one year old car!

I am totally down for this... I've had holes poking in my carpet since under 3K miles... $500 may be a bit rich for my blood, but $250 is definitely within reach! Would a thicker carpet do much in the way of added sound dampening?

I paid $250 for a wonderful molded carpet set for my ZX.
Would sure pay same for another one for RS.

Call your subaru dealer and ask them who they use for the aftermarket leather on the cars. that should be a auto upolstry (sp?) shop. they should have something.

inpreza kid, how nice of you to volunteer to put that together [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]
seriously guys. if you want a custom molded carpet you can get one. get together a bunch of people, and one of you guys who knows a manufacturer nearby approach them and say that you've already got 10 or 25 sold if they will make one, and have a possible market of 5000 members here. money talks, if you say that you have 25, or even 10 people ready and willing to pay $250 for a carpet they will make one for you.

I will be visiting an automotive upholstery shop this week, I'll try to get some fabric samples and see what they can do as far as molded carpets go.
The interior of my impreza is already gutted, so taking out the carpets won't take too long.
more news later!

scooby5, definately let me know. i'd even drive up to toronto to get it. ooooh.. now that i think about it the exchange rate for buying it in canada would make it even cheaper!

I will be onsite tomorrow, I'll see what they offer. They sent me some pretty nice pictures of custom carpet kits, but I'm after a standard dark carpet, like the stock one, but thicker and of great quality.
I'll also ask about other frills like logo embroidery and stuff.

Just a little venting here guys... but anyone wh ocalls the carpet in teh RS crappy obviously has not sat in any of it's competitors in today's market... the interior of the impreza is VERY nice for a $20K car. thin carpet or not. sorry.. i'm just sick of people complaining that they got more than they paid for in their car... OTOH i would be interested in an upgraded molded carpet to match my trunk carpet i ordered...

All I see here is proactive discussion... We see something we don't like, and set out to resolve it. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
Empirically speaking, however, the Impreza carpet does blow. Fit and finish is not a strong point of our cars. I was well aware of that when I bought the car, and definitely didn't buy it for the plush carpet. The one other car I looked at, the VW Golf 1.8T, was much better equipped in the carpet department, but offered less car for the $$. But does that mean that I will sit idly by as I see more and more holes appear after only 16K miles? Hellz no! Get me AWD AND a plush carpet! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

i'd be in for the $300ish range. safir, i also knew about the carpet when i bought the car. i actually like the fact that it is a 'no frills' kinda ride. i don't really care what other comparable cars have for carpet though. i care what i have. so, an upgrade it is!

hehehe.. yellow.. um.. no.. hehehe
here's the guts of what i said...
[snip]We are looking for 2 things.
1 - molded carpet kits.
the carpeting in these cars must cost Subaru of America $10 per vehicle!
its horrible! do you have, or can you obtain such a kit?
2 - trunk liners.
custom made, floor mat material - trunk liners.
The possibility of a 75-150 person group buy is there.
We just need the manufacturer to come forward and do this for us.[snip]
hopefully we'll get someone to do this for us!

Well Good news and Bad news.
[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img] I visited the shop today and looked at their carpet fabric samples. They are really nice, Nylon cut, thick and very plush.
A complete moulded carpet kit would run around $420 CDN , and wouldn't be a one piece replacement, but 3 pieces; One piece for the rear, and 1 piece for each front side, which would join under the center arm rest extension. This makes repairs / replacements much easier and is not noticeable.
[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif[/img] However, the bad news. Since the carpets are thick, they have to mould them "on" the car with steam tools, and then trim them by hand. Which makes the car necessary for the installation. This particular shop will not fit 50 carpets to one car, mould them, then pack them as they say the carpet will lose it's moulding and will become a bad fit.
So unfortunately, this one didn't pan out. Hopefully Subiegal can get better results!
I do admit however, that having a sample of nice carpet in my hand and imagining it in the car, made a world of difference in the overall look of the car. I drove there in my A4 (which doesn't have carpet problem!) and felt confident that this carpet thing we've got going is one of the most worthy interior upgrade the Impreza can get.

Yep, it seems like carpet manufacturers are a little slow on the uptake on this one... I mean, Automotivedirect offers carpet kits for the Alfa Romeo Montreal, fer X-sakes. You can't convince me that there is a larger market for those than for the Impreza... there were only 3925 produced in total.
