So just the pictures above, I cut off the top ridge and the sqeak is now gone :D
Thanks to all that contributed~
This thread is a blast from the past.
I did the mod 3 years ago, and to this day I don't hear a squeak.
Plus I never thanked those who helped me back then.
Thanks guys.

This will do it for ya!
Don't spray WD-40 in there, it is probably quite bad for the seatbelt material.

Hank3, thanks for posting those pics. Once I saw where the problem was, it took me 10 minutes over the weekend to fix it...and no squeaks since.

mine did it too till I dremel'd that bad boy out of there

It took me about 5 minutes to fix this problem when I realized that the sqeaking annoyed the hell out of me in my '02. I just took the plastic pillar cover off, filed down the ridge, put it back on... problem solved. Couldn't have been any easier.

Hahaha - cool. Forgot about this thread/easy fix. These are the best kind - easy, fast, and free ;)

both of mine started around 20K and I did the same. remove dthe panels on the B pillars and cut off the ridge that rubbed the belt. haven't heard a noise form either belt since then and i'm just over 35K now

Can someone show pictures of where exactly should I apply force (preferably photos with red markings/circles added by photo editing software) to pull the sills at the front and rear doors area, before I can remove the B-pillar trim thing? I just don't want to do something wrong and break something which is not supposed to.... I still need to make monthly payments for 3 years & 7 months more... :-)
| Hank3 | 01-24-2006 02:22 PM |
There's really no specific place to pull up on the doorsills. I usually just slip my fingers underneath them, and pull up. They come off relatively easy.
| dcwrx2 | 01-24-2006 02:35 PM |
Ok thanks, I may give it a try this weekend....
Is the locking mechanism for the sills using those small metal "clips" that just use brute force to push-to-lock, or pull-to-unlock?

| Hank3 | 01-24-2006 02:42 PM |
Now keep in mind I'm speaking on '02 WRX experience, but I'm pretty sure the doorsills have been either the same or similar, the tabs are plastic underneath the doorsills. They slip into white plastic housings IIRC. They snap in and out with relative ease.

Sorry to dig this thread up from the graveyard, but I finally did this fix during last weekend, it did the magic! I was thinking about doing this fix like 2 months ago, but I was either lazy or have no time.
No more noise from the seatbelt, and meanwhile I did another noise fix at the driver side door trim. It was about some tiny but non-negligible rattling between the door frame and the plastic door trim. Luckily I could pin-point the "intermittent touching" of the inner door frame and one of the "small pillar" of the door trim, and then I stuck something thick enough to close the gap in-between --- No more rattling~~ :D

I'm glad these older threads get dug up, just brought my '04 home & was able to fix the seatbelt squeak & all my rattles (for the time being at least). This place has been so helpful, I think I'll go buy something from the store.
I didn't have a dremel handy, so I just trimmed the plastic with a heavy-duty file, and trimmed off the flakes with an exacto knife. Quick & easy fix.

Very annoying. Thanks for tracking it down so we can put the squeal to rest. It makes me think other people think my car is crap when it does it. Haha.

6 years and 150,000 miles of hearing that noise later, thank you... Every time I moved the belt would squeak; I used to have to use the radio to block the noise - not anymore!!!

FYI, you can use some wire snips or something of the same sort to snip the plastic lip.
Sadly when I bought my car it did this. I didn't know there was a write up though. I just yanked the pillar plastic looked and seen a bunch of fuss and a sharp plastic edge and put two and two together. :)
Following the suggestions and successful attempts from "fragment," "MdWRX," and "4830DeuceWRX," I spent some time tonight trying to fix this. I first took off the piece (lower piece to the B-pillar) they both had mentioned:

When I took it off, I pulled the seatbelt numerous times and the noise was not there. So my inkling all along was wrong. It was not the loop piece that the seatbelt slides through. It is indeed one of the ridges, the biggest one at that, behind the piece.

Like "MdWRX," I also dremeled the ridge and then sanded it so it was smooth. Here is the result:

So there you have it...no noise at all anymore and the fix was very easy
Huge props to the members who led me to the true culprit. I was incorrect with what I thought was the problem. Anyways, I hope whomever has been following this thread will find it beneficial. I know I have :)
Exactly what i did. Worked perfect.

Haha, this is a great thread. I fixed this problem shortly before joining NASIOC -cut back the plastic and Styrofoam and taped over them so they'd be smooth.
I was getting pretty pissed at the squeak next to my ear. Made the car sound like a Model-T bouncing down a country road even though it's a quiet drive otherwise =)

The noise annoyed me and everyone in my car at all times. I tried WD40 and grease with no luck... I thought the noise was coming from the 'belt pulley' (thing that slides up and down on the pillar, the belt goes through it before going across your chest.) To be honest with you when I read this thread I thought to my self 'too bad that's not where my noise is coming from...'
Anyway, I took it apart because it looked too easy not to give it a shot, cut it with a razor, put it back together and actually sat in my car - in the garage - with the seat belt on trying to make it squeak, i couldn't. I can't thank you guys enough.

I have a better solution!
What I did on mine was just put a shipping tape or duct tape on that plastic sill.
Bam noise is gone without cutting anything.

Fix post #50 to reflect that tape can be put on the ridge instead of dremeiling. But I'm not sure of the sound would come back sometime down the line.

Pull up on the driver and rear passenger bottom sill. On the bottom b-pillar remove the one tab with a flat head screw driver. The bottom b-pillar is now free to pry off.
I cut off the offending plastic and duct tape for good measure and riddance.
