WRC '06 season on Speed Channel not to be?

Are you guys disappointed that Speed Channel won't (look's like) cover WRC '06 season this year?
I'm paying to have that channel and they only air NASCAR. Don't get me wrong, I like NASCAR also but.....it's always on!! where's the European open
wheel races? European touring? shifter kart? race bike GP? WRC? at least they kept Australian V8 races. :D
I'm thinking seriously about removing Speed Channel from my TV package. :furious:
On top of that, they are deleting and locking threads from ppl that asking them what's going on with WRC '06 season on there forums........lame!!

didn't know about this. I'll have to think about keeping it. I mean there is still F1, World Challenge that I could watch.

Yeah its a shame that by the time speed goes HD, all you will be able to get is NASCAR....NOT !!!
WRC deserves a better network than SPEED. You are right, EVERY time you turn on Speed its some kinda NAscar and trust me , I understand why, but man we are losing out here big time. We need a new channel called "Left and right and braking also" in the 3 other parts of the USA ,.....

So where are you getting this information? Have they made an announcement?
On the Speed forum it is just speculation from people panicking, just like last year and the year before that and the year before that
I know Speed is desperate to get rid of the WRC because the ratings are abysmal, but Subaru in the past, had threatened to pull their advertising and I have been told they have actually been buying the airtime to put the show on.
Nicky Grist had mentioned to me that we may get a delayed version (i.e. a week late) since the satellite feed is a huge expense.
It's not over until they make it official

This is the first I've heard of Speed dropping WRC entirely, and I, as well, won't believe it till I see an official announcement.

Does this mean "The Lost Drive-In" brings in more revenue than the rest of the non NASCAR motorsport community? Could they not find anything else worthy of airtime or does the France family have it's finger on SPEED's tail too?

Yikes!!! Is this true? With Ford making a big push with their new Focus this year, surely they'll be looking to advertise during WRC events more?
| skuttledude | 01-02-2006 09:34 PM |
I surely hope this is not true!
A few years ago SPEED Vision had 1month and sometimes 3 month delays on the WRC. I petitioned, sent many e-mails, etc.. to bring the WRC back to a reasonable time. They responded very well with same day feeds and last year went to Sunday night deals which was still fine.
It would be disappointing if it were to go away.

I'm still trying to get thru the video rights with ISC and once again they have me in a holding pattern. I think something may be up as I said awhile back.
I don't think Speed has said they are dropping it I just don't think they have said they are going to pick it up. That leaves the US video rights in limbo at the moment. In the scope of things I don't think the WRC is that expensive to carry. As Mopho mentioned it probably has a lot to do with what Subaru is willing to pay. If "A Day in the Life of a NASCAR Driver's Wife" will make more money then Subaru will spend then no more WRC on Speed.

Then cancel your subscription to the Speed channel and subscribe to WRC.com or one of a dozen other Rally sites for their live/slightly delayed webcasts. Problem solved.

Well, this is almost fine by me. Late last season, I started downloading torrents of the euro feeds of the each day of the event. Piped them into my xbox media center, and didn't have to deal with speed channel at all. Though, it is a shame that there is so little revenue in it, what has subaru done to drive awareness? Walk into your dealership...is there a single item that says "WRX- Rally bred peformance; See the WRX take on the toughest terrain in the world on Speed Channel brought to you by Subaru". At best, there may be a few year old WRC banner in the parts dept.

I'm guessing the video rights to F1 are a lot more expensive then WRC. Maybe its some package negotiating deal. Lower the F1 costs or we drop everything FIA ! We'll probably never kow the whole story if it all falls apart.

Speed channel/speed vision used to be awesome, it was all the motor sports that the big networks didn't touch, now it's nascar TV.Were the rating really that low for FIA events? Also, it's not like F1 or WRC took time away from nascar, F1 starts at 7:30am on Sundays and WRC is 11:30pm on Sunday, there were little or no reairings of these races. Nobody is watching TV that early or late on Sundays, except for a few people, so I don't see how dropping this coverage will help their ratings. Even if the FIA wanted more money than Speed was willing to pay, what are they gonna replace it with that will get any ratings at all.
| TimStevens | 01-03-2006 09:27 AM |
I'm wondering... would the "no FIA" thing extend over to MotoGP too?
I just sent 'em a note saying I'm going to cancel my subscription to their channel if they ditch WRC and F1.

Isn't it a bit naive to say they "carry" Fifth gear? Just because they rerun the same few episodes OVER AND OVER AND OVER does this really count? My five year old son knows them now and points out that we are watching a rerun.
What ever happened to them showing speed racer? He really enjoyed that....anyway...
At this point I wish they would either poop or get off the pot. I would hope if Fox/Speed dropped them FIA would get the message and maybe allow OLN to pick up the series for a more reasonable cost befitting the supposed ratings. But the ratings are really no great surprise given the coverage has been getting worse year after year on the things I want to watch yet a marathon of Barrett Jackson (I don't know why I hate it so) or Nascar drivers playing cards. Do people REALLY want to watch nascar drivers playing cards at prime time?

I only hope that the WRC does reach your shores where there has been a steady increase in fans over the last few years.

Here is the repsonse I got today from one of Speed's reps Mark Callahan:
"SPEED will be providing F1 coverage in 2006; World Rally is still to be determined, as its exorbitant costs are not covered due its low viewership.
As you may recall, SPEED provided up to five hours per week of World Rally in 2002, repeating each day's action every week until the next event took its place. NOBODY watched, and coverage was reduced in successive seasons, although costs escalated. It's come to the point now where in order to continue on the network, the series must attract an audience large enough to justify the expense of bringing it to the viewers.
Those are the cold, hard facts."
Again this is from SpeedTV, and it does not imply or suggest the opinions of said poster, RALLYT-WRX :)

For the second time in this thread, it depends on what time zone your in. On the west coast it was on at 8pm which is an ideal time
A lack of people watching the show is not really to be blamed on Speed. WRC has been on that channel for at least 7 years. It has been on at all different time slots, all day marathons and they advertised the hell out of it and still no one watches it, so can you blame them for thinking about not carrying it anymore if it is costing them money?
