Is that Christian ripping out the terra-trip connection wires on Tanner's car while he's not looking?
Blennophobic 08-04-2006 11:09 AM

Great pics man. They look too good for digital... are they?

Haha I guess he didn't see the camara
makofoto 08-04-2006 12:10 PM

Interesting to see the switches up on the side of Pastana's door ...

not to start a war between camera nerds. but, quality is only limited by the photographer, not the equipment.

guessing by the file name it was taken by a kodak camera? all the metadata has been stripped from the images.

fwiw, DSLRs and some highend p&s digital cameras have surpassed 35mm film quite some time ago :D
makofoto 08-04-2006 12:35 PM

Agree with all of your statements except the last one ... there is still much more info on film then even the highest pixel count "35" mm imaging chips.
makofoto 08-04-2006 01:30 PM

Note ... you aren't allowed to bring in "long, pro-style" telephoto lenses into the X Game venues! :-(
Damon 08-04-2006 01:44 PM

niiice. :)

ESPN controls all commercial rights to all images and video of events, that is why the pro style gear is banninated...
DrBiggly 08-04-2006 06:58 PM

Great looking shots; most folks don't have the wit to use a flash outdoors in sunlight. Good to see that it was done properly. :)

Gunnars STI 08-04-2006 07:02 PM

Ought to be a great show!
makofoto 08-04-2006 11:19 PM

Although most were pros ... there were certainly a lot of regular folk out there today with long pro type lenses:

My buddy Pete took these with one of those one piece digi/SLR like cameras ... he should have more photos posted soon (nice overall shot of the stadium):

Mopho 08-04-2006 11:32 PM

Mako, I walked right by you today and called your name, but you must not have heard me. I was in a rush so could not chase after you
WRXedUSA 08-04-2006 11:33 PM

Is it me, or do those jumps look asinine?
makofoto 08-04-2006 11:35 PM

Those jumps are for the motocross bikes ... read the caption on the stadium photo.

Morgan ... saw your car and was going to leave a note ... but didn't have a pen. :-)
RallyeXpress 08-04-2006 11:41 PM

tomorrow
makophoto,

Are you going to be there tomorrow. We plan on getting there about 7:30am.

Had some of my pics printed to get signed! WOW!

I have 10.5mm, 17-55mm, 80-200mm, and 300mm 2.8, and several flashes and my D2H.

What's your camera position? I'll come see you (at least I will try since the security is really tight)

The access to shoot photos really sucks balls! The security won't let me go anywhere, and I am the official Rally photographer for ESPN, and I have a staff credential and everything!. I nearly got myself thrown out of there today
makofoto 08-04-2006 11:48 PM

Makofoto ... "mako," japanese heritige; "foto," german heritage. ;)

I think I saw enough today ... I want to take it in on TV tomorrow. It's really a "made for the small screen" event. If you are in the stadium you can watch the whole lap, including in-camera shots, 100 yard long cable cam down the back straight, SpiderCam over the stadium and lots of jib arms and cranes ... on the Big Screen. It is good to go there to soak up the atmosphere. It's easy to walk around and get a good view of the entire course ... from up high. Pretty great for a dirt/tarmac special stage!

One reason to go there today was to hand over my Spec C LSD that I sold to a Rally competitor ... it's going to have an exciting new home in a Rally Car!

... also my long zoom isn't back from being serviced. :-(
makofoto 08-04-2006 11:51 PM

Compared to road racing and street racing circuits ... I though there were lots of great angles ... that pretty much anyone could grab. We talked to one ESPN photographer who had the same complaints though. "STAY BEHIND THE CONCRETE!" Try something different ... lots of neat high angle shots ... especially around the fountain.
Mopho 08-04-2006 11:52 PM

Ah, I assumed you were working the event
makofoto 08-04-2006 11:55 PM

I was working ... as a director today, had my own Team Blew staff still photographer with me. Nice, when it was over, I went home to relax ... he's having to process all of the shots. :-)
Mopho 08-04-2006 11:56 PM
"STAY BEHIND THE CONCRETE!" Try something different ... lots of neat high angle shots ... especially around the fountain.
It wasn't just stay behind the concrete, it was stay behind the fencing that was 30 feet behind the concrete!

I had already shot the overhead fountain shot yesterday, and I shot the jumps and the dirt.... I find it boring as hell. There is only a few decent places to shoot and most of them they won't let you anywhere near it to shoot

I still managed a lot of good shots, but I had to sneak in and try and steal the shots before security kicked me out
makofoto 08-05-2006 12:07 AM

Try shooting AX'ing. I got called off my position behind ARMCO, "the event is stopped until the photographer behind the barrier returns to the paddock!" ... which was probably THE safest place in the Green Lot at CA Speedway, because I didn't have a spotter. Called off by an overzealous Deputy Safety Steward ... after I had gotten permission from the Head Safety Steward ... who agreed with me that my position wasn't even on course, thus not requiring a spotter. I was so upset I took my toys and went home! :-) It wasn't like I was out there for my own fun in 105 degree heat. I was trying to get shots for my fellow competitors.
Mopho 08-05-2006 12:21 AM
Try shooting AX'ing......
There is good reason why I don't shoot AX (or track racing) ;)
makofoto 08-05-2006 12:25 AM

Man ... you just go for the easy spectacular shots!

This is about as exciting as it gets in AX'ing ... and if you blink, you miss it. I asked the driver to do it again ... and he wouldn't!

You really need to come out to one of our events to see if you can work your magic! Rallying makes you look good! :D
Mopho 08-05-2006 12:34 AM
Man ... you just go for the easy spectacular shots!

Gotta get those out of the way first, after that it is when you have to put yourself into those places they don't want you to go ;)

Puts moto-cross to shame

BTW, did anyone see Pastrana's double backflip last night
Gethin 08-05-2006 02:49 PM

The double flip was pretty cool!

You'd think somebody would have told Doug he needed to JUMP that gap.

SRT not fast4r?
makofoto 08-05-2006 04:39 PM

There was something wrong with the SRT. He apparently missed the first days practice sesson, so yesterday when he did his first lap (he missed the parade lap), he jumped ... just enough to pancake between the two bumps. Pete's photo above shows his second lap. Not sure what he was thinking ... but there was something large and loud rattling around under his car ... before the jump.
Babolat06 08-05-2006 04:39 PM

X games Rally
Is anyone videotaping this?
Im salivating in anticipation! I thought it was funny how they show 90% subies, and a tiburon and evo..subaru rules.
kaspur_eh 08-05-2006 05:03 PM

its on now
Synx 08-05-2006 05:04 PM

Worst commentary evar!
DGoReck 08-05-2006 05:05 PM

not bad so far...i think they are doing a decent job putting it out and trying to make it 'main stream'

Nice that the SS stage for last is live.
Babolat06 08-05-2006 05:11 PM

The commentary is on par with all televised sports- tennis, baseball, etc, the announcers know what they are talking about, but dont go too deep into the mechanics and finer points of whats going on, to make it more entertaining and interesting to those who are not into whats going on..

God im jealous of these guys...how old are they? I figure if i get into rally now ill have a chance to do something with it.
iamtherealwoody 08-05-2006 05:16 PM

comentary sucks in my opinion but overall not bad. I think im starting to come around to the 06 front end, they look pretty nice, especially mcrae's car
Synx 08-05-2006 05:19 PM

I duno, seems more like they are trying to talk about it from a regular xgames commentator perspective (which i assume they are). Which sure its okay, but i dont care to hear "wow sick nasty drift" every other turn. Either way this is great for the sport, and awesome to watch, but i really hope McRae takes it. Guess im too used to Grist from the ole days of speed tv, EuroSport coverage is great though.
Babolat06 08-05-2006 05:23 PM

What does double apex mean?
Sideshowbob 08-05-2006 05:24 PM

Ramana is leading the SSS!!!!!!

Still 6 to run thou!!!

Go DSG!!!
iamtherealwoody 08-05-2006 05:35 PM

If they say "apexing" one more time.......
jut60 08-05-2006 05:41 PM

so when will this be held in new england, i wanna go (and to see the other events as well)
rupertberr 08-05-2006 05:52 PM

Holy Sh#T!!

Should have tried a double!!!
DGoReck 08-05-2006 05:53 PM

wow colin rolls it and still pulls off second! wow.
WShade 08-05-2006 05:53 PM

Colin rolled and Travis did it...................
MY03ImprezaRS 08-05-2006 05:53 PM

Nice finish for McRae, that was fricken' unbelievable.
fluxcapacitor 08-05-2006 05:54 PM

haha that was tight! and the wing was undamaged too! subaru power baby!
kaspur_eh 08-05-2006 05:55 PM

wicked exciting finish on the super special...

i'd love to see pastrana and block in the WRC someday soon. :)
Babolat06 08-05-2006 05:55 PM

That was awesome.
jut60 08-05-2006 05:55 PM

oh my, lets hope this boosts future air time on tv for rallys
DGoReck 08-05-2006 05:55 PM
