March Gran Turismo Challenge

As kindly suggested from a previous thread of mine, I've decided to organize a bit of a monthly Gran Turismo Challenge for the motorsports forum. I was originally going to post this in OT, but didn't for two reasons: 1) I didn't want that high of a volume of people participating; it would be hell to manage and 2) I think the quality of competition will be better in this forum!
Each month (if this goes well) there will be four individual challenges, one per week. This should give you plenty of time to fit each challenge into your schedule. However, I sincerely hope nobody spends the ENTIRE WEEK on this! :p
The first three challenges will be increasingly challenging by either the power of the car, level of modifications, track difficulty, or a combination of things. Week four will be a wildcard of sorts. It may be something wacky, something impossibly difficult, or whatever I plain feel like. I will do my best to keep these challenges interesting and challenging.
Ideally, I'd like to keep lap times under 2 minutes but that occasionally might not happen. Points will be awarded to each week's top 8 drivers and the points system will reflect F1 points scoring. Depending on the number of participants, this could change.
So, I'll run it this month and see how it goes. If it goes well, I might make this a monthly thing. Here goes:

[B][SIZE="3"]Week 1's Challenge[/SIZE][/B]
Car: Mazda MX-5 Miata 1800 RS (NB, J) '04 - 23,500 credits
Track: Laguna Seca (World Circuits)
Modifications: None. You should buy the car and take it to the track. Do not change the tires and definitely do not change any engine, chassis, or suspension components! The car should be literally showroom stock. That should make your tires Sport Medium. You may perform an oil change and wash your car. You may adjust driver aids, weight balance, or anything else that you can change on a stock car.

Car: Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren '03 - 610,000 credits
Track: Mid-Field Raceway (Original Circuits)
Modifications: You may change the tires. This car is a huge bump in horsepower from last week, and the stock tires simply cannot deal with this. The brakes and suspension are already top notch, so I'm not going to allow that to be changed this round. But as usual, you can change the oil, traction control, and weight balance. No worries, there will be [I]lots[/I] to change next week! Good luck!

Many of this stuff is repeated from above, but go ahead and read this for all the fine details. Sorry for the rigid structure, but I just want to make sure everyone is clear! Above all, I just want people to have fun with this. :)
[COLOR="Red"]Note that these rules will most likely change around this first month. Be sure to check the edit time of this first post to see if I've updated it![/COLOR]
[INDENT][SIZE="3"][B]The Challenges[/B][/SIZE][/INDENT][list][*]For the month, there are four challenges. You are given one week to complete each challenge. Each challenge must be completed within that particular week and you must submit your times to me by midnight eastern standard time on the last day of each week. The following is how the challenges will be arranged by week:[list][*]Challenge for Week 1: 1st of the month through the 6th of the month[*]Challenge for Week 2: 7th of the month through the 13th of the month[*]Challenge for Week 3: 14th of the month through the 20th of the month[*]Challenge for Week 4: 21st of the month through the 27th of the month[/list][*]The first three challenges of each week will be increasingly challenging in terms of car's horsepower, level of modification/setup, track difficulty, or a combination of the three. The fourth week is a wildcard week where the challenge will be something wacky, impossibly difficult, or whatever I plain feel like![*]I will ideally try to keep lap times under 2 minutes, however I can't guarantee this. I will also try my best to keep the challenges both interesting and challenging. No one wants to be driving a Triumph Spitfire down the back straight of Circuit de la Sarthe II, do they? :p[*]I will try to get the challenges up at a reasonable time, but don't expect things to be updated at exactly 12:00AM EST for each challenge.[/list][INDENT][SIZE="3"][B]Submission[/B][/SIZE][/INDENT][list][*]I cannot read this thread to find everyone's best time. Therefore, I'm requesting that everyone e-mail me their best time for each week's challenge. The email address is: [email][emailprotected][/email][*]You may only submit one time per week, so make sure that the time you send me is your fastest! After you submit a time, you cannot submit another. Sorry to be a hardass, but it will make things run smoother on my end. [*]To submit a time, you must send me a screenshot of your time! I feel the majority of people have either a digital camera or camera phone, so this shouldn't be a problem. If it is, I'll reconsider. In your photo, please make an attempt to somehow show the car in either third person or in text. An example would be [URL="http://www.mattdell.com/hostedfiles/granturismochallenge04.jpg"]this[/URL]. This photo obviously shows the track (Laguna Seca), what car you used, and your time. Obviously I'll be lenient here, but this is ideally what you should send me.[*]Also to make things easier, please use this format when you e-mail me:
[QUOTE]Subject: March Week 1 Challenge time for [username]

Attach a screen shot![/QUOTE][/list][INDENT][SIZE="3"][B]Scoring[/B][/SIZE][/INDENT][list][*]After each round I will compile everyone's submitted time into an excel spreadsheet. From there, I will determine everyone's position for that challenge.[*]Points will be modeled after the F1 points scoring system as follows:[list][*]1st place: 10 points[*]2nd place: 8 points[*]3rd place: 6 points[*]4th place: 5 points[*]5th place: 4 points[*]6th place: 3 points[*]7th place: 2 points[*]8th place: 1 point[*]Lower than 8th place: 0 points[/list][*]After each week, the points will be added up so you can see who's leading whom. At the end of week 4, the points will be tallied for the final results.[*]Unless there is a crazy number of participants, I think this scoring system should work quite well for this application. If not, I might consider revising it.[/list][INDENT][SIZE="3"][B]Miscellany[/B][/SIZE][/INDENT][list][*]The game version is Gran Turismo 4.[*]You should use simulation mode, not arcade mode.[*]Above anything else, please do not cheat. Cheating consists of cutting corners, taking more than two wheels off the track, modifying your car when the rules do not permit, etc. Just don't do it. The only thing I can confirm with a photo is that you used the specified car on the specified track to get your submitted time. Therefore, this makes it a partial honor system and I hope everyone can respect that. Again, this is for fun so there shouldn't be any reason to cheat![*]I'm extremely open to suggestions for challenges, rules, or whatever! Either post it up in the thread or PM me. I'm always open to new ideas![*]Even though you can only submit one time to me, you are extremely encouraged to post up your current best time in this thread and trash talk amongst yourselves! It will definitely make things more fun![*]I will try not to pick extremely difficult cars to source, but occasionally you may be required to purchase an expensive car or acquire a prize car. It's just the nature of the beast, so be prepared! If you need extra cash, I highly suggest running the Fuji 1000km endurance event with an F1 car. It only takes a few hours and you get around 1,500,000 credits after prize money and after selling the prize car.[/list]
Each month (if this goes well) there will be four individual challenges, one per week. This should give you plenty of time to fit each challenge into your schedule. However, I sincerely hope nobody spends the ENTIRE WEEK on this! :p

So, I'll run it this month and see how it goes. If it goes well, I might make this a monthly thing. Here goes:

I like the idea and I think I am going to participate, but I think the month should be all the same car, and the 2nd-4th week of the month should be given mods to the car like 2nd week suspension- adjustments can make the difference on suspension tuning, 3rd week power, 4th week tires or whatever

I've been waiiiiiitinnnnnng fo thiiiiissssssss!
And the above guy has a valid point. I work every weekday and then go do stuff after work like every night. So maybe we could make it the full month...? I dunno... I'll make it work! Haha. Or maybe just two full challenges per month...? How long do you wanna run this bad boy? (Forever? Ok!)

Damn it, i want to participate but I have no way of sending a screenshot. My phone never works when I try to send a picture. Anybody know how to send pictures with a Nokia 6102? My service is cingular if that helps any.

Great idea and I'll definitely take part! FWIW, I won a free pair of DC Shoes in the Impreza Shakedown Challenge last year! ;)
P.S. Why no oil changes? If you keep running the car in GT4, power rating goes down and down unless you change the oil...

Count me in too.
I agree with Chiketkd, I don't see why oil changes are barred being a "maintainance" item. I suppose this also means I can't wash the car when it gets dirty? ;)
Also, how are we supposed to run the laps? For example, I've seen another challenge that specifically required running in the club races (I forget the exact option) and not free practice.

[QUOTE=Chiketkd;17223208]Great idea and I'll definitely take part! FWIW, I won a free pair of DC Shoes in the Impreza Shakedown Challenge last year! ;)
P.S. Why no oil changes? If you keep running the car in GT4, power rating goes down and down unless you change the oil...[/QUOTE]
Interesting. Well I was under the assumption that an oil change to any new car would increase its performance by a few horsepower. I just didn't want people who didn't know that to be at a disadvantage to those who did. I also didn't think your car would wear in practice mode, just like the tires don't wear and the gas gauge doesn't move.
So that's the only problem I had with oil changes. If the above isn't true, I can change the rule no problem. Can anyone confirm it?

In practice mode, the engine does wear based on the number of miles you drive (the tires do not though). Everytime you go back to your garage after a 1/2 hour session of lapping, you'll see the hp rating drop by 1-2hp - do this repeatedly and I've seen it drop by as much as 20hp over a long period of time.
BTW, doing an oil change on a new car might net you ~3hp on a miata (if even that much), and as it costs 50 credits, it's cheap and it's maintenance.

Good question, someone asked that last time and I should've remembered.
I do not care if you use the D-Pad, Analog Stick, Steering Wheel, or anything else. If you can control the car with it, I don't see how I should limit your personal preference. Is there really an advantage of one over others?

Dude, send your picture in a text message to your email address. Then host the picture on a free picture hosting website. Then post the link to the image that's hosted on the free picture hosting site into a post or message by typing [IMG] "the URL of the image" [/IMG].
Or just post the URL without the IMG tags.
Anyway, are we going to post our times here, or will MattDell post it for us...?
How is the "leaderboard" going to work?

I like that concept. It was one of the things that made Gran Turismo 2 great! Perhaps I can make that a week 2 thing or fit it in someplace else.
[QUOTE=Sharky NRK;17222890]I like the idea and I think I am going to participate, but I think the month should be all the same car, and the 2nd-4th week of the month should be given mods to the car like 2nd week suspension- adjustments can make the difference on suspension tuning, 3rd week power, 4th week tires or whatever[/QUOTE]
I like this and I don't like this. I like the concept, but only for a shorter time period. I think a whole month dedicated to one car and track combination would get boring after a while and possibly have a lot of people lose interest. At the same time, it would really decrease the number of good scenarios I have to come up with... fourfold! :p
I'm going to consider this. I just want to see how one month of this goes first.
Glad there's some interest! :)

It would be cool if you guys just post up your current laptimes so everyone can judge what a good time is, how they're progressing, and when they can finally call it quits! :p
After everyone has submitted their times to me through e-mail, I'll post up the top 8 times and a link to an excel spreadsheet for that week. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have a "real time" leaderboard, but that would require a lot more of my time than I really have. So, end of week results will be the system. But hopefully you can sorta gauge who's really doing well by people posting up their best times throughout the week.
Again, if anyone has a better idea, let me know!

As far as I'm aware, there isn't much of a difference in each mode. I would assume everyone would just run Practice, though, since there's other cars on the track to get in your way in a club meet. Actually, I don't see how that would be preferable at all.

An afterthought: On the leaderboard next to people's times, post whether or not they used the force feedback steering wheel/peddles (*sp?) or the controller.
I've been in debates over controller vs. wheel before. Ha. This way we can see exactly which one is superior.

I'd get involved if I didn't have to bother with a screenshot-for two reasons. 1. No prize...although cheating is always lame, in this case it's just sad.
2. If I am lame as above, as you said, getting a 'desired' screen shot would be easy and undetectable.
BTW, thanks for taking the time to manage all this. Very cool of you :)

Yeah, and I'd love to do it honestly. But I can't read through every post for times and post them up. Then update them again when somebody posts up a quicker time. It's just way too much work. I've done threads like these before on a much smaller scale and it was a big PITA and huge time consumer to do it. That's why I'm requesting one submitted time per week and to do it through e-mail. It's just WAY easier to do it that way.
Now, obviously there will be a leaderboard on the front page after each week's results. But to update them daily is just out of my ability.
If you guys want to keep track of people's times, just leaf through the thread yourself. You can get a good gauge of the times by doing that.

Yeah I don't think I'd ever try to offer prizes either. That would just increase the likelihood of cheating. The only real way to prevent cheating is to require a video of your fastest lap (which many big leagues do). However, that would definitely isolate a lot of participants, including myself.
But it's just too easy for someone to just say "Yeah, I got this time" than for someone to actually post a picture of it. I'm not saying this way is perfect, but I think it's ideal for what we're working with.
[QUOTE=ScubaruImpreza05;17227954]Also, should we turn off any driving assistants? Maybe we should post whether or not we are using assists too? Or just include it in the main?[/QUOTE]
Good question. My initial reaction is that driving aids are a personal preference. Some people do better with them and some people do better without them. Then again, the most fair option is to not allow them and use the default, which I believe is 10 oversteer, 10 understeer, and 5 TCS.
I'd like more input on this question. I really don't know what would be best. I could just say that if a car is going to be showroom stock, then you can't change driving aids but if you can modify the car, you can adjust driving aids. But on the other hand, things are getting REALLY confusing by this point. So I'd rather just keep it a simple "Yes you can" or "No you can't."

I honestly would like to leave the driving aids off. Its more of a challenge to do since you yourself are controlling the car, not the computer. I have come to believe that if you are trying to get a fast laptime at the track in real life, you wouldn't want to be running with traction control on; maybe i'm wrong. But like you said, its personal preference.

Other folks may have their best times w/ the aids on. In my experience they won't be the fastest times over all, but whatever. It's up to them.

[QUOTE=Sharky NRK;17231824]yeah I can't seem to string my fast segments together - I will correct in one area and push to hard and make a mistake in another - I know a faster time is there
your kicking tail with the 1:45:597 but driver assist = wiener lol[/QUOTE]
Yeah, driver aids are wienie and they'd be the first thing I turned off in a real car. I figured I had a few days to make a fast run so I just decided to jump in and drive. I saw a couple of 1:48 times and wanted to know where I stacked up.
And I sure understand the difficulty in lining up consistent fast laps. I certainly wasn't banging out 1:45s lap after lap. Put a rear tire off..."well crap, there goes that fast lap."
