04 - 05 JDM tail light mod....problems.

For all those who have done the JDM tail light mod to their 04 - 05 WRX/RS/STI, I need your help.
I have been referring to this write-up but I am having trouble making it work as simply as this picture says it is:
[img][/img]
Now this picture makes it seem simple enough, and people have told me it takes 2 minutes. However, both times I tried this I cannot get the #1 harness to reach the #2 spot without over straining the wires. And when I do get the #1 harness to the #2 spot (with force) I can't get the #2 harness to reach the #3 spot. It appears that the blinker light wires are stopping this whole process because they are too short. Has anyone done this without lengthening these wires?
  It seems so simple, what am I doing wrong?
P.S. - has anyone tried switching the entire wiring harness to opposite sides for a better fit?
Thanks,
Kevin

Come on.....anyone?
| X-43a | 02-01-2007 03:26 PM |
you have to add length to the power and neg wires.
| ekw | 02-01-2007 03:26 PM |
can't see the pic.
when I did mine, I soldered extensions.
I think I read in the 'big thread' that people swapped the left & right harnesses, and did not have to extend.

Are you doing it right? My #2 spot doesn't have a bulb in it.

Here, I stole this picture from the JDM tail mod thread...it's so easy it hurts. Follow the numbers. I took the bulb out of my #2 spot. Looks awesome, no hacking of wires needed.

the inner circles go to the out lights, then the outer ones go to the inner circles... I didnt even need to extend any wire.. The middle lights are now dead, because you arent going to put the bulb back in... though i used mine for a rear fog light

I had the same problem. Cut the electrical taping as far as you can go (without eexposing any metal underneath).
Does anyone have problems removing the lights that have grey plastic caps?
I moved them before, but now they are stuck.

Yeah I took the bulb out. That's not the issue

In theory that should be easy but just like I said, the wires seem to short to allow me to do that. I'm beginning to think it's just too cold (15 degrees) so the wires will not stretch/move much at all.

This seems to be my solution. I was hoping there would be no extending wires, but it looks like it will be necessary. Thanks. I will update tomorrow if I have any more problems.

yeah the wires are a little short, but like the other person said, if you cut the electrical tape a little you can barely get it to fit. Mine fit without any extensions you just need to pull it a little.

Can someone post a picture of the JDM tail-light's compared to the stock one's on an '04?
| ekw | 02-02-2007 12:34 PM |
these are not JDM tail lights, it's getting the JDM 'look' out of the USDM.

bumping old thread...
Ever since doing this I have had an inconsistent problem where the the brake light only on one side seems to not always work. In my case it is the drivers side, the running light (now the circle) is fine but the outside bulb that illuminates when you hit the brakes does not always work?
I didn't lengthen the wires and the wires are definitely "strained" but if it works once why wouldn't it continue to work?

sounds like a bad connection with the bulb, have you tried swapping the bulbs from left to right and/or removing the bulb and checking the existing connection? Do that and report back...Better yet, have you checked all the wires to that bulb? are any of them show live wire (plastic missing)?

I have switched bulbs and it did fix the problem, but apparently not for good. What would cause this? Bad connection in the socket? But why now, never had this problem before I switched the bulbs around.

BUMP, question, not sure if any one can answer this but well i met some guy that told me all i needed to do is cut and redirect two wires, pretty much there are three lights and well your left with two when your done, spots number 1 and 3 remain and #2 does not work any more. is this correct?? i havent done this yet but want to....should i just switch the spots were the bulbs are??? awhhh!!!!:p

I did mine and 3 friends' cars and not once did I have to cut the wires. It is not necessary. Have you tried all the things I have emntioned in my previous reply? If so, then you have a short somewhere from the fuse panel to the bulb. is there water or moisture by the bulb itself, like inside the houseing or by the harness in the lense?
| crpwrx | 03-02-2009 09:17 PM |
I did this mod in about two min. All i did was swap the harnesses to the proper spots and was done. No soldering or lengthening anything.

Holy old thread.
I'm confused... Do you remove the #2 bulb? Or the #1 Bulb?
EDIT: So I think I got everything located correctly, but now, nothing lights up. It only works when everything's back to the stock location...

I really didnt think this was a difficult mod to do... I never had to extend any wires or anything and everything worked out fine. Just follow directions and use some common sense. Look at the stock photo, now the Modified JDM... The bulb the has a 1, goes to the center, the bulb that has a two goes to the right, the bulb that has a 3 goes all the way to the left...
| niblick | 02-06-2011 04:14 PM |
The wires are fine, I've got plenty of slack. I've put the bulbs where they're supposed to go, and removed the bulb from the harness that ends up in the middle.
My biggest problem, is that neither the parking lights nor brake lights are illuminated, unless everything's put back to stock.

^^Don't swap bulbs, keep them in the harness and just swap location... cmon now ;)

Haha, no, I'm not removing any bulbs, except the middle one.

You just cant teach common sense.
| JavaBot | 02-06-2011 04:47 PM |
Check the connections on the back of the bulb seats if you're straining wires, they might not be connecting well enough?
