Little Talledega: STi at Ferrari Day Video

Here's some low res video of my STi and Ferrari's at Lil Tally. Thanks to the SE Ferrari Club of America. Special thanks to Scott Siegel for instructing and editing out me going two off. ;) Squeezing in a late day on the dyno just a few days before was nice too.
There were plenty of nice German and Italian makes, two vette as well as two 04 Viper's. Later in the day (after the video) Scott rode along with the the two Vipers and droped 7 seconds off ther laps, thanks buddie  . At that point they were only a second or two off my pace. Needless to say the whole day was alot of fun.
The car:
TBE
ECUTek tune
XP9s and Motul
24mm bars at both ends
-1.8 F -1.2 R 0 Toe
Worn out RE070s, they sound nice though

That video has a cut in it before you finish the first lap, so it was hard to put together the lap time, but it looked like you were running a little over 80s or so. What was your fastest lap? 60s range laps are where it's at. ;)
I haven't been back to Little Talledega in a while. Hopefully I can run some next year.

That day I made a few 69.x but mostly 70s going CCW. CW, later in the day, I ran 71s. A lotus Europa ran 65s  . The thing was sick.

Where, exactly is "Lil Tally".......That looks like a very safe track to run on, with all that grass and no walls...

I've seen some 59s times. The Shifter karts run in the 61-63s time CW. Not too bad for 33-43hp. :)

I just don't get the whole exotic car thing. There are so few owners of those rides that actually drive them like they were meant to be driven. I get all pumped up when I pass those guys but I try to keep it in perspective. An off track excursion for one of them can mean 10s of thousands in damage. For me, no so much.
The only guys that can truly afford to drive those cars at 10/10s have FU money, Oprah money, more money than God!

Anniston, AL off I-20 maybe 90 minutes west of Atlanta. The track was built for moto's / carts from what I gather and consequently it is very safe. Its a nice place to push the car.
Were they not trying...?
The 328 class Ferrari's weren't as fast of a car as I thought. Never the less, half the cars showed up on trailers. Many wore slicks, a few guys had $1k+ in ferrari style helmets and suits  . More than half had raced the course before, this was my second time there. Most of these guys were relatively serious but there was still an feeling that they were there to enjoy their toy rather than the sport. I was certain that the 'big gay' car was on a cool down lap but then he didn't pit..., could have been a non-owner driving the car. They shared their cars much more than other clubs / events. Still can't believe that the 512 owner didn't want to ride along when Scott took it out, I think he was trying to sell the car.
Out of the 4 track days I have done thus far, it seems like if the car runs more than 40 to 50k, it is rarely driven by a competant driver. I pass the drivers not the cars. I can't wait to start attending days with high-end cars AND good drivers. MTI brings their Vetts to Road Atlanta a lot, the slower ones (<400 whp) would be fun to chase.
For some real action, down load the whole video and watch the viper chase at around 40 minutes (out of 68). This was post instruction. He was all over my ass for a few laps cause the cars in front were slowing me down. I gave him a real late point by to get more footage. He learned the lines much better but still wouldn't go to the breaks that hard.
My next event is two days at Barber and we should have both in and out of car video, simultaneously. :D Its a BMW Club event so I think there will be plenty of competant drivers. Can't wait to get smoked

I suggest a roll bar/cage soon. Also consider running Solo1 events, where you can actually compete.
| javid | 10-15-2004 03:27 PM |
Currently the car is a track + weekend toy. I had planned on waiting about 2 years for a 'real' non-bolt-in roll cage (the quasi 'its no longer a street car' point). As time has wore on I am becoming more interested in making the car a track-day / light competition than a track / street car. Odds are I will finish my next stage of suspension, get some gauges + oil cooler, and then a roll cage and some lightening. Under that scheduel, the cage probably won't be in till middle of next year. This certainly is an expensive hobbie and it is still hard for me to judge what I want vs what I need....
Solo1: I have never looked into it. Is Solo1 track or cones? My local SCCA should have all the info? Others have also suggested roll cage + license and then club racing. How are the two different / same?
Thanks for the advise.

38 inches of rainfall per year avg in Seattle area, compared to around 60+ I think . Sweet video..thanks for posting! Maybe sometime in the next year I'll be able to hit that track for school.

You should try and make a trip to Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah. Another great track. See if a Porsche Club of America meet will take you. They had a two day event in September that I was unable to make due to lack of funds (due to lack of job).
Roebling is a great track. Little Tally looks like equally as good of a track.

Yeah I run at Roebling all the time it's right in my back yard. Much higher top speed than little tally. I hit 137 on the front straight in the middle of summer 100+ deg and high humidity. I wonder what you could do there this time of year in a stock STi? Anyway they are both cool tracks. Little Talledega is usually a little cheaper.

Solo1 is like time trials. No cones (or VERY few) but you may run with a couple of cars on track at once. You compete with others in your class on fastest lap. If you do a couple of Solo1 events you can then run some hill climbs. Hill climbs are like time trials on real roads.
I'd love to run Solo1 and hill climbs, but I don't want a roll bar in my car, and I'm not going to run my kart with other non-karts on a track or road (because dying sucks).
Just to warn everyone, you can most certainly total a car at Little Talledega. I knew a guy who totalled his WRX (and broke his arm) at little Tally and I have seen pictures of an Integra that wrapped itself around the pit entrance wall. I honestly felt pretty safe out there and drove off the track once to avoid a car that spun right in front of me in the rain, but I know it can still be dangerous.

ButtDyno: That was my buddie. I think when the ferrari pulled off he was poking fun at the viper's vanity plate. One Viper had 500HP and the other said SNAKE or something like that.
midnx03: Roebling is definetly on the list. I would also like to get up to CMP and down to Sebring. Nov 20-21 TreyS and I are headed to Barber. I will have lots of video from the event.
suby_dude: I dont mind at all. I can get higher res versions if you want. THe Viper chase later in the day is some good footage too.
hrtpumper: it made right at 300/300 whp/wtq. He did a little more tuing on the road afterwards, mostly WG duty and the timing advanced a little more so.... That was with TBE with dual HFCs. The new power is great but the low end torque (bout +60 ft-lbs at 3500 rpms :D ) is very nice. Boost builds quicker and much smoother now too.
Dussander: Sounds like a cage is required then for Solo1? It sounds like fun, what do individual events usually run $$$? You are right about being able to wreck at Tally, but I think that is true of most any course, or rather ay time you are pushing a car. One thing is for sure though, have seen tons of cars go 4 off there and have no damage. You can't say the same about the 'bigger' tracks in this area.
WRXedUSA: Little of both. Later in the day the vipers got much faster, check the full length version. That was my seond time at the track, so I knew the lines pretty well. My heal/toe had gotten much better. Most the day I was focusing on trailbreaking. I have been back once since the video to assist one of Scotts schools, we had 'technical difficulties' so we didn't get video. I finally broke down and bought my own DigiCam so I will be taping all of my events. During the day I got much more comfortable with the limits of the XP9s and trail breaking into turn 2, and 4 (at the end of the back strait). That day I had fresh RE070s and was able to run consistant 69s with a best of 69 flat. I usually only clock 1 or 2 sessions towards the middle of the day. I really need to get an automated timing set up. Delta dash is nice but the connector at the port can get in the way and the laptop needs to be straped down. Anyone know of a good cheap automated timing setup?

Most likely nearer to 308 wtq and 315 whp.... just got our dynos updated so we'll know for sure shortly. Those 69's were fantastic. For those that can' tell Javid has become quite the driver. Nice job Buddy.

Check the SEDIV calendar. The Atlanta Region Solo I chair is stepping down, and we no longer have local events. This past year Solo I in Atlanta consisted of putting together a hillclimb. SEDIV is more active: http://www.sedivracing.org/ There are listing on the calendar for Solo Trials and Solo Is throughout the SE.

Nice vid Javid, can't wait to run around Barber with ya in Nov.
I've been to lil tally 4 times now and have seen two wrecks were the cars couldn't race anymore.
CW course, BWM 318Ti cali edition, came around the back banked turn and spun off and t-boned a tree. It was toast.
CW course. I was "playing" with a Type-R and he was watching me in his mirror and late braked into turn 1 right past the front straight, he spun off......over an embankment.... into the embankment.... then stopped. Just missed the tire wall. I felt bad because I thought he knew what he was doing based on a conversation the night before. We tied off the front subframe to a tree and put it in reverse. It pulled straight and the fenders and hood all lined up. Alignment was toast though. :)

Hotlap timer. You can find them at http://www.ioportracing.com under Pit Equipment. See if this direct link works
Works great. Me and a track buddie finally dropped the cash on them and I can't believe we didn't do it sooner. Over just a course of one day at buttonwillow, it made us better drivers since we where so competitive with our times we kept besting each other. Of course, without over-driving and killing ourselves. :)
I attached the reciever with zipties to the passenger side rear seat o-shiat handle. Worked fine. Used velco to attach the display under the airbag on the front passenger side.
Best money I have spent on the car since the Stoptech BBK. :)
