Maddad vs Prosport part 1

SPOOLME 01-16-2007 07:29 PM

Maddad vs Prosport
Maddad gauges or Prosport gauges? Which one would you guys pick? I heard a lot of good things about both and I am debating on which one to buy. yes the prosport is a lot cheaper but I wnat to know function wise.

oh and if you do have either of these gauges, can you post a pic of your setup.

Thanks

I bought the Prosports because of price. They are electric and do a opening ceremony sweep, and display readings. Thats good enough to me. Im not the type to drop 200+ PER GAUGE for a name, even if they are more accurate and better looking. I paid 300 bucks total for all 3 gauges, oil filter sandwich, and oem gauge pack housing. Made my own aluminum bezel for the gauges.

it depends, when you buy clothes do you buy them for the name or functionality. Basic functionality of the prosport gauges isnt much different from all the rest and they look great. If you want to be a follower then spend 1000 dollars on a set of defi's because it will definitely make your car faster.
rukkie 01-17-2007 01:28 AM

They're both great gauges. You get what you paid for. (note: I bought the Prosport 'cause I'm dropping too much cash into my other hobbies)
ekw 01-17-2007 07:57 AM

I have no experience w/ Prosport.
Bought my MadDad (V1 STi) gauges when they first came out, and have had them in the car for about a year.
I am very happy w/ them, and the new V2 gauges look even better.
rukkie 01-17-2007 11:28 AM

alirhgt i'll post a high rez picture of the prosport later and you'll see... just gotta figure out a way to stick my tripod half way in my car...
Daddy's SCP 01-18-2007 01:13 PM

Functionally they are quite similiar. The older MadDad v1's are like the origonal ProSport and the MadDad V2's are similiar to the new stepper motor driven ProSports. The biggest single difference is appearance/face design. There are a few other factors as well but for most the functional part will be a wash.

Love my Prosports

I just got 3 prosport gauges,... Niceeee. Reades perfect. Looks really good,

I agree, Im not paying 200 per gauge

As promised I got a few pictures of my Prosport electronic boost gauge. Feel free to repost the links but absolutely NO commercial use or alteration of images or repost outside of flickr.com please. Full sized versions available upon requests.

that boost gauge. Is that premium or just normal?
Scooby921 01-22-2007 01:13 PM

I've got a set of Prosport gauges right now and they work. That's about the extent of it. The amber version is too orange, the green is too bright. They don't match the stock cluster very well, and that is one thing I do prefer. They all have excessive glare when the sun shines on them.

For that reason I'm switching to the MadDad V2 gauges. The design and function is similar, but the color match to the OEM gauges is much better for both STi and WRX. Daddy's also took the time to ensure that the LED and smoked lens combo was such that they are still visible when the sun is glaring on them.

If you're just looking for function and affordability go with Prosport. If you want better looks and increased visibility then MadDad gauges are your best option. If you want all kinds of extra functionality, data logging, and uber coolness then you are going to need $800 for a set of Defi BF gauges.

For those who have the maddad gauges, do they do the sweep when its turned on, like the defis do?

Yes, but not in the same way. They stop at 12, 9, and 6 o'clock for calibration. Lame IMO but I wanted a match to the sti cluster for less than a bajillion dollars.
KestrelSi 01-27-2007 01:10 AM

Sorry to revive an older thread, but I'm curious if anybody has pictures of Maddad V2 Rx gauges against the WRX instrument cluster. I'm interested in how close the green matches.
sperry7 01-27-2007 01:49 PM

Captcrunch- what version gauges do you have? I have the V2's and mine sweep without stopping for calibration.

With the maddads i would say definitely go with the Green/Green gauges. I have the Green/white gauges and they are super bright without the use of a resistor. Even with a 4.7k resistor they are quite a bit brighter than the stock cluster. I am going with a reastat so i can adjust it easier.

They are some pretty sweet looking gauges !

The Ti series(the Amber color) does a 12,9,6 o'clock mini pauseon the return power on sweep. There was an opportunity to have this reprogrammed but the reason for the initial programing of it that way was to give a visual reference of the gauges calibration to ensure you stepper motor hasn't skipped a beat. Those stop points should be identical every time you start power on the gauge. I agreed that the 12,9,6 pauses made sense and actually gives you more info than a nonstop foward and return sweep.

The earlier design RX series gauges(availabile in White/Green, Green/Green, Blue/Blue) do a standard sweep and return, but even then the sweep speed is not identical to the factory speed. Not sure if even those super expensive gauges have their needles sweeping in perfect concert with the factory needles.

I've used a 10K adjustable potentiometer from radio shack and you can dial them down as low as you need them...wow thought, I though they looked pretty close to factory with a 5.6k...but the potentiometer will work to let you dial in the brightness to anywhere you need it. The lighting on the Ti and RX series have separate illumintion wires so you can use resistors and potentiometers to adjust them as you see fit.

what is the advantage of a stepper driven gauge over a "electrical"? just curious. do they respond faster to vaccum/pressure changes over electrical?
ekw 03-22-2007 07:35 AM

stepper motors smooth the motion of the gauges (especially boost/vacuum)
I think they also allow the gauges to do their little start up and shut down "dances".

sluflyer06 03-22-2007 09:38 AM

yea i already read through the Wiki on them, mainly i noticed how much more slowly my buddies electrical prosport reacts to boost changes than my autometer mechanical, and i just ordered a prosport premium stepper series which i wonder if it'll respond faster.
silversubie99 04-14-2007 05:12 PM

Im looking for some good gauges to match my 05 wrx cluster. Should i go with the Maddad V2 or the Prosport Premium Peak/Warning Boost Gauge?
scooby888 04-15-2007 12:19 AM

The Maddad gauges are a PERFECT match with the stock gauges...right down to the font. I don't think Prosport can claim that (and no, I don't have stock in either company...)
kihbolo 04-15-2007 12:39 AM

I didn't care what I got. I went with Prosport for the Blue color. Not to bright at night and I can see them during the day.

are you saying this is true for the 08+ models? Price isn't a huge deal for me, though the prosports are nice. I've heard they are a bit too orange, just off from what OEM is. If i can spend a bit more and get font and color right on, i will. for me. looking factory is most important.

thanks for any more input you have
slimfit 10-15-2011 10:41 AM

Thread raise from 07?!?!?!?! Anyways, my maddads are a DEAD ON match as far as brightness and color. Plus they dim when you hit the lights. From what I hear the prosports do not.
2subiesinyard 10-15-2011 10:58 AM

Prosport = junk

Old thread bump!

I've never actually been in a +08 interior; I have an 04 WRX with the green guages and they match the stock gauges perfectly. From what I understand and what I've seen, the '08 has the same lighting as the STi's. If it's about the same as that in '08, then I'm sure they'll match, font and all. I can vouch that Rich at Daddy's certainly does his homework and makes sure that they match up as close as possible.
mw1484 10-15-2011 11:51 AM

i got the prosport halo's and they've been working great for me. I like the functionality and looks too. 3 color backlits to choose.

I'll work to take a pic of the gauges on amber (OEM) color match and send over. They look pretty friggin close IMO. Only exception with the halo's is taht they have the red needle. They do make new Prosports though that match the OEM with the white needle...

Personal preference. Also if the installer possibly didnt install it right one could assume it was junk.

My old prosport gauges were installed just a tad wrong and I thought it was junk and sold it.

I just installed a new one yesterday myself so the quality of work was 100% perfect. Boost is dead on accurate, color matches the 11' dash. Only problem I have, is during the day the amber isn't quite bright enough.

I may re-wire it so it stays white durring the day, and amber at night when I turn the headlights on.
mw1484 10-17-2011 10:25 PM

To the OP: here are more photos of my gauges, the prosport halos.

I love that people still havent figured out they are the same guage

Let me guess, you guys with the prosports/claritys think ebay glowsports are junk right?
meebs 10-17-2011 11:13 PM

I went with Glowshift and have regretted it ever since. I should have listened. :P

The gauges themselves work fine... it's just the sending units last for oh about 2 months. I'm on my second set of both the oil temp and pressure senders. The second temp sender has held up but the pressure is now back at 2.5 bar when the engine is off... ****ing garbage. I'm going to preplace them with Stack's. I would rather them work right than be able to change color or do a little dance.
mw1484 10-18-2011 12:03 AM

Yah, i've had mine for several months and they've worked fine for me... I don't think anything of other ones since I have never had them. just speaking from personal experience on these that I like them, can't and am not saying they're any better or worse than other gauges...
