Anyone ever try building their own car? :alien:

I bet a Super 7 would do pretty well at auto-x's, and would be an absolute blast to drive. :disco: In the future I could get a daily driver that's a little more "kind" than the STi, and have this as a weekend toy that could be driven (or towed by the STI if the drive is too long  ) to auto-x's.
rautox 11-01-2004 04:09 PM

Seems to be a lot of info on "locosts" over on the grass roots motorsports boards.
Draken 11-01-2004 04:24 PM

I'm considering building a Locost type vehicle this winter. Not sure on the kit or powertrian type yet.

I am looking at going the ultima gtr route, just looks too tasty.

i have built many a car, from space frame racer to forest rally. Work out a budget then tripple it and you'll be close. :)

Spent over 35k into it, and its still not done. :furious:

I'm in the process of building a tube chassis, 944 bodied, C5 powered track car. It's using alot of parts from the stock car world. It's pretty much a custom one up job with fabbed suspension, 10 in. wide wheels at each corner and a complete redesign of the engine location. The entire engine sits behind the front axle line, so the firewall had to come out and the driver's position had to be relocated about 12 in. rearward.

I budgeted about 10k for the project and expect it to realistically cost closer to 22k by the time it's all said and done.

Sounds awesome. I'd love to see lots of pics when it's all done.

I've been looking at more options for a powerplant for the homebuilt Super 7. I've been leaning towards a 1.3 Mazda Rotary engine or a 1.3 liter Hayabusa engine depending on their power to weight ratios. The Hayabusa makes about 60% of the torque and 70% of the power of the Mazda, so I imagine the transmission of the Hayabusa would be much lighter due to the decreased torque demand. The Hayabusa could also be modded to 200 HP if I really felt more HP was necessary, which is doubtful

Another advantage to the Hayabusa is that so many squids have the bike, you can find engines and transmissions relatively easy on ebay. A big disadvantage to the Hayabusa in my mind is that its not fuel injected. I would feel much more comfortable hooking a PC to the ECU and playing with the injectors than I would manually adjusting the carb; I guess that makes me a child of the computer age
Rallycarperson 11-03-2004 08:58 PM

Yeah, Ive been thinking about the Hayabusa engines in the MAP. Dont know much about them, but I dont know if the tranny will be able to support the car's weight. Do those engines have that much torque? I know alot of sand rails use them.

To save us headaches, we went the a ~150hp 12A Mazda motor...

~175 HP and ~100 ft-lbs torque

Remember that the Hayabusa is capable of incredibly high speeds, all you'd have to do is increase the final drive and you'd have all the torque you could use :)

I've been kicking around the idea of multiple vehicles based on the same driveline. You could have a Lotus Super 7, dune buggy, hill cllimber, and rock crawler all using the same Hayabusa engine/tranny combo. When you want to trade in the Super 7 for a home built dune buggy you just take a few hours to swap out the engine and tranny :) Your final drive would handle all of the torque multiplication so it should be practical to build a few recreation vehicles around a common drivetrain.

Thanks! I'll try and oblige. I'm trying to be realistic about the timeframe for building this car though, seeing as how I don't want to go into debt with the construction costs.

Actually, I want to give credit where it's due. Mr. 944 Turbo Guy (Myles) graciously spoke with me on the phone about my 944, and it was because of him that I decided to go this route.

In terms of materials it'll probably be cheaper than sourcing 944 Turbo parts. (Easier to replace if broken too) In terms of construction time and tools it's a whole lot more expensive. Fortunately I have a lot of extra time and engineering talent from friends to draw on. All I'm missing now is a kick ass garage.

In response to the Hyabusa drive train ideas. I think the drive train would make an excellent powerplant. In college I was involved with the SAE team and our tube frame car was powered by a 600cc 4-cyl honda. It was FI and with the size and weight of the car it was a real handfull to drive because of the power to weight ratio. Though there was no speedo I'd bet we made it to 80 mph in about an average city block with the wheels spinning the whole time. I'd imagine a slightly heavier longer wheelbase car with a 1000cc engine would be a real kick in the pants.

It is fuel injected, i drove the first non factory Westfield XTR2 built and that uses a Busa engine on fuel injection, most people buy a fuel computer to trim them for a bit more umph.

My own personal take is to avoid bike engines in cars, they are either torqueless or need regular rebuilds if you wind some torque out of them in a car aplication. They are also a pain to drive on the road, quite dificult to roll the clutch out without stalling or reving the nuts of it when in traffic.

The coolest custom built car project I found on the web is http://www.dpcars.net, very good write-ups on a fascinating idea for a track car.

When I get the money, I think I will try to build a Stalker V6, already classed in EM! http://www.angelfire.com/biz6/stalkerv6/index.html. This car looks to have an amazing combination of driveability, cheap components, and outright performance.
mofugga 11-05-2004 06:43 PM

having seen the stalker at many a local autox it looks like a blast to own/drive. he just built one with a supercharged v6 & it's quite fast, says it makes the n/a one look like a *****

Saw an Ultima GTR at Limerock this past weekend. Yes - it is as cool as they say it is, though the driver != fast, the car seemed very capable in the right hands.

the AC Cobra shape is just stunning, one of my friends used to race the real thing in the 60's smashing pretty much all the lap records in the UK.

The ultima recently broke the 0-100-0 world record for a production car.

How fast are the Cobras compared to today's cars, or is completely dependent on the kit? There were about 3 Cobra (and a GT-40) kit cars at the last auto-x I went too, and none of the Cobra's times were that impressive; in fact, the closest they came to my STi's time was aboout 5 seconds, on a 50 second course. And I'm a crappy driver :o

Whatever car I build it has to be more functional than anything. I like my cars functional, although you probably already knew that, considering I drive a huge winged, huge scooped, pink slathered, not that attractive econo platform just because it performs well
