Did anyone else just see that crash between the 1st place BMW and the 2nd place GTO-R.
All I have to say is:
Flipped end-over-end 8 times and sideways once.
I'm just glad the driver was okay and conscious.

It looked like it was partially his fault and he came over onto the GTO-R, but that hump in the grass was really what did it for him. If it weren't there, he would have just had to run off a bit and come back into 3rd or 4th place.......
I can almost guarantee that hump will be gone by tomorrow.

Yea, that was freaking nuts. So glad hes ok.

I saw that too - I just came one here to post the same thing...
That was by far one of the worst crashes i've seen in the kind of racing, at these kind of speeds. That freaking GTO was definitely at fault. He put the bmw sideways and there was no way for him to recover. The initial air that he caught of that bump was mind blowing.
So he's OK right? I sure hope so. I was glad to see him out of the car quickly.

Was the GTO at fault?
What it looked like to me was that the GTO was on the far inside, and the BMW came down on him like he didn't see him, but I don't race door-to-door so I am not familiar with all aspects of a situation like that.....
edit: reading his recollection of events, I hadn't seen that the GTO just wouldn't let off even when he would obviously hit
No matter who was at fault, nobody could have seen it being anywhere near that bad.

I wonder if the original intent of the hump in the grass was to deter drivers from
shortcutting. If it was, that was an obviously horrible design flaw. (shakes head)
I winced when he hit the hump and then kept saying to myself, "he will land on all fours".
Of course, he didn't.

 O snap that was a good belt. On the first full view of the landing you can see that the motor is completely off its mounts and flopping around at the end of the transmission/driveshaft.
Yeah, I bet that little yump is gone already, if the Bimmer didn't cleave it off already.

have you seen how beefy the BMW cages are? i mean good lord, they are freaking tanks!!
still thats amazing that he made it out without any real injuries. It was so sad that it was only 3 laps from the checkered as well :(

"The corner workers were yelling to get out of the car because it was going to catch fire, and I couldn't get out because my HANS device was stuck in the window net, and the window was smaller than normal."

To be fair:
"Q: What about the HANS Device?
HAND: That's number two for me and the HANS Device. That's the second time the HANS Device saved me. They said there's no way I could have survived the impacts without the HANS Device. It saved me again. In (a Toyota Atlantic car at) Milwaukee it saved me and here it saved me. I won't drive without it if I have a chance. Not many people can say that they hit hard enough to have a HANS Device save them twice. Whatever, we'll go on."

Joey Hand was supposed to drive for us on Sunday. He didn't, but was at the track and walking around. The car was totally obliterated except for the driver's compartment, which held up very well.
This car was one of the PTG M3's from last year. I don't like to see roll cages tested, but this one certaily did its job.

I was glad to hear he was ok. Brian was tapped during his stint in that exact spot (turn 3) on Sunday by a BMW. I am glad he kept it on the track, I had no idea there were holes like that out there!

GTO didn't look like he tried to get out of the way. Looked like an intentional nerf, but it is too hard to tell. Wasn't there. Very glad Joey got out fine. Maybe a HANS device needs to go into this year's budget...

nope. This car, and one other PTG car from last year was purchased by Matt Connoly Motorsports at the end of last year. Sigal Sport Racing bought the other two before the Finale at Mexico City last year. I am pretty sure that PTG doesn't have any of their Grand-Am cars from last year left.

Joey launched off one of the new access roads they put in when they repaved the track. If this same thing had happened last year when it was just grass there, I think there's a good chance Joey would have been able to simply drive back on the track. He might have lost a spot, but more than likely would have been able to get the car back on track without any other problems.

But there are other H&N restraint options which do not have egress issues in production bodied cars that are not being allowed.

Video (if not already posted) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LAtIE2ORCs&search=%22Joey%20Hand%22
It took way too long to get a driver that was awake and aware out of that car.
When it was all said and done, I came to a stop upside down. I was still in the seat, and the first thing I noticed was my right shoe was off. I blew my right shoe off and my right glove somehow. I unbuckled myself and fell down out of the car onto the roof. There was fuel running down my back and into the roof of the car, and oil and stuff. The corner workers were yelling to get out of the car because it was going to catch fire, and I couldnt get out because my HANS device was stuck in the window net, and the window was smaller than normal.
I went back in and tried to get my helmet off and then they called me back out again, and then they finally got me out with my HANS and everything on. I just climbed out and laid against the wall. We were too close to the car, still, so they dragged me up the way and worked on me from there.
Boy that single point release really paid off, good thing workers got there and got him out before there was a fire. Lucky that wasn't a rally situation where it could have been longer before help arrived.
