how happy are you with the fit and finish of them? did you install it the way the directions said? if so, how much drilling was involved?
i have one in my closest right now but no gauges to install :( it seems to me the color is a bit darker than stock, but i havent compared the two yet. any word on this?

I didn't go by the directions, the directions said to place the gauge pod over the stock a-pillar piece.. but the Lo-Tek gauge pod is molded so well, you can use it as a direct replacement.. pull the stock a-pillar piece out and put this in it's place. You just need to drill two holes into the metal frame and send some screws through it and it holds up perfectly and looks professional. I meant to take a pic of the top of the gauge pod to show how well it fits, but I forgot, i'll take one later and post it.

How much did the gauge pod and gauges cost you total?

Nice pics, What brand are the guages? Also, I noticed that the pod looks as if it was blocking the defrost for the side window. Any problems with this?

hrm...the lotek is definetely a pillar replacement and my directions said to remove the old one, drill holes, and put the new one in, so i guess they revised the directions. i was hoping i'd be able to install the pod without drilling into the frame but i wont know for sure until i actually do the install. i was just wondering how you did it :)
also, i've noticed on some wrx's with a-pillar pods, that from out side the car, when you look into the front windshield from the driver's side of the car, you can see the edge of the pillar a bit and in the worst case i've seen, the inside where the wires are is exposed. is this the case with yours? i hope not :)

It is a full replacement for the a-pillar cover. I had a hell of a time trying to get it to fit. Had to trim the sides a bit as I couldn't get the moulding up the side to fit proper and even still, it's a bit off.
The colour is a bit darker, but you'd be hard pressed to see a difference unless you were looking for it.
Also, the screws they provided weren't long enough to grab so replaced with .5" longer screws and it's fine. Perhaps I drilled at too much of an angle or something I don't know, but all said and done it looks ok.

I think I paid $60 shipped or maybe less. Much cheaper than what you'd pay for the unpainted black Autometer version, and this actually can be used as a direct replacement of the A-pillar.

It's a LoTek. From www.gaudepods.com. Yeah, it does block the defrosting vent, but it stills get some air by it. Defrosting side windows never really works anyways... ever pay attention to it? Hehe. Well, I didn't mind totally. I hardly use my defroster as is.

I had no problems installing it. I only drilled for the top hole, not for the bottom. The bottom goes between the frame and dash and holds really well as is. I would have drilled a hole for the bottom, but honestly I couldn't get my drill in that area. But with just the top held up the pod is very robust and sturdy, it won't move! I yanked and pulled on it to see if it would give and I couldn't get it to budge. And the visual from the front of the car is fine, mine sits flush the a-pillar like the stock one, you can't see the edge or wires from the gauges from outside of the car. All you see is the agressive look of the pods on the a-pillar saying "Hey, *** is your problem, you want some?!" :)

Well, mine fit in perfect, but I did, like you had to use difference screws (longer ones) to get it to reach the hole I drilled. And yes, the color they paint the pod is a little darker than the stock color, but it's hardly unnoticeable unless you were anal enough to notice it. But i've had people in my car and even some people said "Hey was that gauge pod stock!?!" cause it fits so well and does have that OEM look since it's a direct replacement. I love mine.

Mine works perfect! I don't know why people keep saying that you can't get a Air/Fuel gauge to work.. You tap into the rear o2 sensor wire on the ecu and you're good to go.
Don't ask me which wire! I don't remember. :( Sorry.

O2
The reason some people don't use an A/F gauge on the WRX is that most of the cheap ones are only usable by tapping the rear O2 sensor. The front sensor is a widband O2 and is not compatible.
Not sure how important the A/F reading is from the last cat in the system. DSM O2 sensors are right near the manifold in the O2 housing. This is the best spot. Getting a reading that far back is borderline useless.
I think a lot of WRX guys call the cheap A/F gauges, Cat detectors.

Nope, it doesn't block any visibility from the front windshield. Atleast nothing i've noticed.. It's really only MAYBE extending an inch out into your visibility range. I was extremely comfortable driving after the pod was installed.

Aren't we off topic talking about Air/Fuel gauges? Hehe, anyways, taking the signal from the rear o2 sensor may not be the most accurate, but having it, you still get a general idea of what ratio the fuel is at. It's not going to be completely off from what the car is really doing, it will be very close, not perfect but good enough to "monitor" the ratio with. You can't tune your car by the rear o2 sensor, but atleast you can monitor your car.
It's better than not having one at all! People with those uppipes that have the extra o2 bung, is a good place to run your Air/Fuel gauge off of. But my uppipe wasn't that fancy, so the rear o2 works fine for me.

Sorry took so long to reply.
My setup is an Autometer pod. The gauges are located perfectly for view and does not block my view at all.
I painted it with Varsity enamel pain in Dove Gray.(P364)

I bought it at PepBoys and it is slightly darker than the original, but pretty close. Its almost an exact match to the darker gray found in the interior, like the sunvisor.

How does one go about removing the old A-Piller? Do i connect right to the O2 bung on my uppipe for the A/F gauge?
| Diversion | 07-02-2002 02:25 AM |
It's just held on by clips.. get a good grip on it from the edge and yank it, not too hard, but pull it pretty hard, cause it's on there tight.. and it'll snap off..
