just lookin for a good, unique tip for a custom exhaust. ricey or nicey?
WRXy Beast 09-24-2002 07:04 AM

the money put into a tip like that can get you a performance muffler from like scooby sport or MRT or Stronmung(spellin?)

just my input...

but anyway....

looks ok i guess.....some may call it rice but i'll just say different..
Blue-2002-WRX 09-24-2002 09:48 AM

Why a tip? Save up a lil extra and go with a real exhaust... just got my Tanabe SRM, its loud, yet nice, and not rice!
REXOne 09-24-2002 11:45 AM

The tip looks alright. I wouldn't say it's ricey.

But I agree witht the other guys. You should definitely save up for an exhaust. I have the Prodrive WR muffler. Definitely worth the money.
cantex 09-24-2002 11:55 AM

IF YOU

if you have to ask, it probably is....:D
MAD REX 09-24-2002 12:01 PM

Yes it's rice
nomadtw 09-24-2002 12:45 PM

the only reason to put a tip like that on is if you have no muffler.
otherwise get a muffler

is that the tip that you get at pep boys and it comes in a box that looks like a ferarri?

i was considering one of those on my straight pipe, but i ended up gettin a dtm muffler off of ebay, the sound is so much better, straight pipe just was too raw, but gained soooo much power....
DarkShadow 09-24-2002 12:57 PM

I think it's ricey. If you want the CF look, get the HKS TI CF exhaust. I have it along with some of the other IClubbers. Huge tip. 5" and deep sound.
bunot 09-24-2002 01:02 PM

the correct answer is.....who gives a sheyat? what matters is what you think. rice or not...if you like it...get it!

if i had to stop and think about every design decision that went into my car, i'd never be able to get anywhere.

it's your car, do with it as you will. btw, you'll never get a straight answer. different people have differing opinions of "rice."

HKS Hiper and A'pexi N-1 exhaust are "ricey" by your definition, and yet they're some of the best exhausts around... which actually perform on a whole host of platforms. What ever happened to "All Show - No Go" as the definition of "ricey"? How about we try not to confuse "ricey" with "not my particular taste"

A CF wrap is rice. It serves no purpose. My opinion is that it doesn't look so hot either. Case in point: the difference between the HKS Hiper and the HKS Carbon-Ti. Both are the same exhausts and perform exactly the same. But since the Ti has a CF wrap on the can and has a titanium tip it is $280 more. Well, that exhaust tip will certainly last you for a few thousand years as your CF wrap falls off and the rest of your muffler oxidizes.

Putting tips on your non-performance muffler is also rice. It does nothing for performance but gives it that "rAcey" look. The only helpful difference it might actually give is if the tip is baffled it might, if you're lucky, lower the volume by something useless like 0.1dbA

Do what Fuji said and put your pennies into a real exhaust system that will look the part and PLAY the part.

SonicYellowWRX 09-24-2002 03:41 PM

well, just for clarification... it would go on a straight through performance muffler AND it will be a catless system, so I want to make sure it would clear my bumper to prevent melting the bumper. Now i could run an ugly ol straight pipe or I can do it in style. I have an UGLY lookin tip on my axel back right now... originally cuz I wanted to be kinda sleeper... but no way in hell will a yellow WRX be any kind of a sleeper! Might as well be big and good looking!

i know its rice... and its expensive rice, so it doesnt sell! Who needs to wrap a piece of carbon fiber around their exhaust anyways?! IMO, the APEXi N1 is RICEY! HUGE can and tip! Sounds RICEY!! (borderline ricey on a subaru)

Thanks for the input... just wanted to make sure this tip isnt as bad as putting a WRX on airbags... lol!
WRXURV8 09-24-2002 06:43 PM

I agree, just get an exhaust. I have a Borla and love it. If you are getting the tip because you can't afford the exhaust right now, just wait. You will pay now or pay later. There are some pics of my Sonic Yellow in the Tri-State forum if you want to see your ride with the Borla. Also, with a good cat-back, you can always upgrade (up-pipe, down-pipe, etc.)
SjpWrx 09-24-2002 07:08 PM

..

uhh thats so rice i make fun of people with that
WHTWRX 09-24-2002 07:53 PM

In my book it is, but so what.

If you throw big brakes and cross-drilled rotors on your car, but never need to brake from very high track speeds, that could be considered rice too, since technically you don't need it. But see, it looks cool and that's why 90% of people buy them.

Get it if ya like it!
Wizbiscus 09-24-2002 07:55 PM

i dunno just the fact that your just getting a tip is kinda ricey... all show no go?.. just get the whole cat-back.. its worth it and just a little more
Wizbiscus 09-24-2002 07:58 PM
[! IMO, the APEXi N1 is RICEY! HUGE can and tip! Sounds RICEY!! (borderline ricey on a subaru)

the apex n1 is not ricey sounding.. ambey ricey looking? i'll let you slide.. but as far as sound goes... i don't think its that ricey.... it is a little loud but deep
SonicYellowWRX 09-24-2002 08:17 PM

well aside from the fact that i will be getting a full turbo back... i'm still all show no go, huh? and even if i did only want a tip, I'm still faster than many RS's even stock, my friend... so dont talk to me like i am some newbie... I BUILD performance exhaust systems by hand! This is why I asked about the tip! It IS different and I saw a skyline with a CF tipped NISMO exhaust, which looked badass, so I was inspired.

the APEXi N1 doesnt sound good on any car, IMO. Compared to other exhausts, the APEXi N1 is higher pitched and I dislike that. It looks good... a bit ricey, but good.

Anyways, I'm not here to argue with anyone... just wanted some opinions. So would the NISMO exhaust be ricey? Would a Scooby Sport or Prodrive exhaust be ricey if they had used this tip instead?? The CF insert is real CF, by the way... i just wanted to know how people would react to a performance exhaust that used such a tip... I'm not trying to put this tip on my stock exhaust.
BRP2.5 09-24-2002 08:44 PM

as long as i doesn't have LED's on the tip, i'd say its ok.
IMPREZA RALLY CAR 09-24-2002 11:33 PM

Puke!

Sorry but not my style. Looks like nasty @$$ and really you want class instead. I'd say forget that and go for something better that gets you mega speed and looks good, not riced.

Rice doesn't = Nice
Kostamojen 09-25-2002 02:56 AM

Ive seen worse.

Im not a fan of any exhaust tips over 3" in diameter, so dont ask me these types of questions :p

what i thought was you had a performance muffler, mid-pipe and all, which to me i thought was custom, and needed a exhaust tip for the performance muffler. Now if i thought right, that tip would go fine with a tip-less performance muffler. If it were to be no muffler and just pipe out to the rear, that tip would also be fine.

What i thought was you had a tip-less performance muffler. So to me IMO a performance muffler made for the Impreza was a better choice, but if the custom exhaust you're making is good enough for you then go for it.

Get it if you like! i encourage you!;)
chuckles 09-25-2002 10:18 AM

exhaust tip = rice

if not a full exhaust get just a back box.
SpiritnTransit23 09-25-2002 11:17 AM

is this too ricey

Well, yeah it is a bit as the other fellas have been saying. But, I cant talk either, I am so embarrassed of my scooby right now and cant do anything about it till I have enough money. Atleast, i keep telling myself it wont look that way for long hehe. I used to have a JC Sport intake on but that blew a rear main seal on my car and leaked oil all over the place, and I bought an N1 Apex'i muffler. I have only the muffler on and it was an expensive waste. It's messed up cuz I know alot more about what to get for my car but it doesnt show cuz I am a broke college student  :(
Do me a favor, save the c.r.e.a.m. and get the good stuff.

yup. Rice in my oppinion. Of course, any tip that didn't come on the muffler is rice. :)

Eric
Urm... no tip comes with any muffler... companies pick a tip design and they weld it onto a muffler. There is no magical stork who delivers mufflers with tips already on... at one point, all mufflers have NO TIP aside from an inlet and outlet pipe. ;)

 no offense, but most of you have NO CLUE! There is a world aside from pre-assembled parts you buy off the shelf...

I actually want the "rice king" of all mufflers... the APEXi N1, since its supposedly one of the best performing ones and honestly i like the big ricey slanted muffler and the "BLANG BLANG" does look pretty good. Just a shame its too damn loud.

I'll just stick with my unassuming muffler and pea shooter tip for now, i just hope i dont burn my bumper when i start shooting flames...
Eric SS 09-26-2002 02:01 AM

What I meant was any tip welded onto a stock muffler is rice. :)

If you want the ultimate performance muffler, get the Borla XR-1. It just has a little pipe that comes out of the other end. No chrome or anything. It rules though.

well i never meant to weld a tip onto a stock muffler... which you woulda known if you took the time to read. ;)

Borla XR-1 is just loud... might as well run a straight pipe. For those who dont have the priveledge of a track only car and a daily driver and live in CA... the answer would be a quiet muffler that flows really well. A normal borla universal straight through muffler will flow just as well as the XR-1 but with some extra sound deadening... only difference may be a few ounces worth of sound deadening material.

And I hate to break it to you HKS CF/ Ti Hiper owners, but the flex joint has been known to break and the piping has been known to rub as well... not to mention that the CF is only a wrap around stainless steel and the Titanium is just a tip... so not only does it cost more than a SS Hiper cat back, but it weighs the same or more.

silly people... i ask for an opinion and you think i am rice and try to "save me" from ricing out my WRX.  sorry...

ah well, i am done... feel free to let this thread die. or continue to give me suggestions on how i shouldnt weld this tip onto my stock muffler... or how I should save up for a muffler or catback or axel back... PEACE!
