I'm sorry, but Burns is a whiny little bitch
Every time I see the guy interviewed, he's got some sort of sob story to tell. The latest quotes that just killed me were on the Acropolis Rally show tonight on Speedvision. First he whined about how McRae intentionally slowed down at the last rally (Corsica?) so that he wouldn't have to go out first on the last day. I hate to break it to ya, Rich, but guys have been doing that for as long as I've been watching rally racing. Just because you and SWRT were too stupid to try the same tactic, don't go blaming McRae.
This time, when McRae [i]didn't[/i] slow down, Burns [i]still[/i] managed to whine about it, with some snotty comment about "Of course he [McRae] would say that [he's going to go all out], but I don't really believe that." Well, ya better believe it, because he ran away from you even though he was clearing out all the gravel for everyone else.
Last but not least, the way he treats the spectators (you know, the guys who are [i]voluntarily[/i] coming to help get him back on course) is not cool. He seems to get not just frustrated, but genuinely angry at them, which to me seems very uncouth. Me, I'd be a bit nicer to the guys who are trying to push my car out of a gravel pit while I'm at WOT, obviously spraying the poor, unprotected volunteers with gravel with all 4 wheels.
Burns is obviously a great driver, but he's the only one I've ever seen making any sort of whiny or accusatory statements. Sainz, McRae, Makinnen, Solberg, etc etc all seem much more professional to me. Maybe it's just the news boys picking clips that will make Burns look bad, but I don't buy that.
Well, that's my $0.02, take it or leave it.

Ive been a little bothered by Burn's attitude.
He seems pretty apathetic. When he was trailing McRae in one of the recent rallies, he said something to the effect of "Yeah, McRae is fast, probably cant catch him, happy with 2nd"
He just doesnt seem to have the burning desire to win.

It was very embarrasing watching the little Ginger Git making such feeble excuses AGAIN....
Mind you the SWRT team also want a severe talking to.. Seems to me that they couldn't organise a P1$$ up in a Brewery..

And how about Makkinen's co-driver LOSING HIS PLACE??!! I have never seen Tommi look as furious as he did, as Risto searched for the spot, trying desperately to look calm. Three in a row for McRae, and the Mitsu really looked like a big slug. The little hatches just seem more nimble.

I remember thinking when I was watching last night that I would post on all the points that Patrick made, but now I don't have to. I remember thinking, "What a baby!" Colin was quoted as saying something like, "Richard is/should be fully aware of that tactic." Also, thata is not the first time that Burns has mistreated the spectators. I do not wish failure upon him, but he sure is hard to root for. Colin is still my favorite, not only because of his skill, but also because of his drive to succeed. He may not always win, but it will never be because he did not try everything in his power to.
BTW, I am actually impressed with the restraint that Makkinen showed. Instead of flipping out, he kept his head and told the navigator how to get back on track. (I can't speak about what happened to the poor guy later. :D)
And, you gotta feel for Carlos, that guy can't catch a break. We all know that in the end, he will not have as many career wins as Colin, so that might have been his last chance to be the all-time win leader, if only temporarily. Kinda sucks for such an awsome competitor.

As fans of the sport, do we not have the right to comment on behavior that is less than sportsmanlike? I don't want to start anything, but noone is above reproach, especially when the evidence is these for all to see on film. The fact that our comments were admittedly predictable (no less than yours) does not take away their validity.
Then again, anyone that listens to sports talk radio (like me) will appreciate the fact that differing opinions and the ability to debate them is part of what make sports fun. :)

I suspect that Burns says that stuff about McRae for dramatic effect. Rivalry is good publicity.

Richard whines and bitches, so do all the WRC drivers, Richard has just been higlighted lately.....how about him crashing RIGHT after the time pit board, do you think that had anything to do with his off? I know it would distract me.

Yeah, you could tell that he took his eyes off the road for just a second to look at his +/- time. At those speeds that is all it takes I suppose. I agree with most of the prior comments, I am a die-hard Sube fan, but Burns makes it hard when he bitches out the fans/volunteers for not pulling his car out of the ditch after he screwed up. Reminded me of the rally in Sweden where he did pretty much the same thing.

Yeah my wife was halfway watching from the dining room and she's like "what whiner" and "I'd just leave him stuck there". Seriously though I know all these guys have their moments, just like any sport. I think Burns is frustated and has been getting the spotlight a lot lately. It did seem a little to coinsidental that he crashed just after seeing that pit board, dumb move SWRT.

Best part of the coverage was when they did the "Richard Burns History" sidebar bit, and they showed him several years ago sporting that major 80's flock of seagulls hairstyle.
Re: the whiny Richard, considering how much is at stake for these guys I'm surprised he was as calm as he was with his car at 45 degree angle. Consider that he was set at the moment of his crash to make a serious run at first place for the rally, and knowing that a lapse in his concentration had basically eliminated his chances... I'd be demonstrating a little bit more frustration.
His overall demeanor is just typical for a Brit anyhoo. I work for a bunch of em, and once you accept the fact that they come across as arrogant, it's easy to see past that.

As a Brit and as someone who works with them everyday I couldn't disagree with you more. I can think of other European contries that might come across like that but I won't make any broad, all encompassing generalizations like you did. Not to mention that the US has it's share of arrogant people who, 99% of which, have never even traveled outside of their country.

My bad Tony, you are quite right. I offer my sincere apologies to any offense you took from my remarks. In fact, I even characterized my own experience erroneously to make a stupid and bigoted point. I have only met 2 Brits ever that came across as arrogant, one in a bar, who before the night was over became intimately acquainted with the toe of my Air Barkley's, and the other I work with day to day. (along with a slew of humble and polite Brits)
This doesn't indicate any type of pattern for those of British nationality, and points instead at individual personality flaws.

As for the Brit in the bar I can understand. To make another "broad generalization" ;) we Brits come it two distinct varieties, happy drunks and not so happy drunks. Unfortunately, you encountered one of the later. Good thing they don't make up a large percentage of us.

I think it's safe to say that not many of us here have multi-million dollar contracts driving 3/4 of a million dollar rally cars. How are you suppose to act when you put that $750,000 car into a ditch, while each second that passes by could mean the difference between winning the world championship or losing it(which very well may effect the rest of your professional career), and the only way out is by getting the spectators to push your car out. How are you suppose to act(a retoracle question since chances are you will never be in that postion)?

At first I didn't think burnsy had right to bitch. Pit boards are not illegal, they just have their draw backs as burnsy found out after losing three minutes after getting distracted by a pit board before a fast right.
He should quit bitching and concentrate on driving!

Thanks for clearing that up. Although you are correct about the coverage, we are still allowed to form opinions based on the actions that we see. If I see someone acting like a baby, should I assume that they are, or should I assume that they are really nice people and that their behavior should be overlooked.

Sure, he is under a lot of stress and extreme stress brings out the best/worst in people. I would love to see Burns go to boot camp and yell at the sergeant. Some of the other rally drivers do not act like crybabies when faced with major disappointment
eg when Sainz's car stopped maybe 400 feet or metres from the finish line and he was about to win it, he just said "That's life", no bitching or whining.
That is Professionalism.
Everyone can be nice or act nice in front of the camera or in an interview but you only see the true colors (eg if one is a coward or brave soldier when facing enemy guns at the front line) when under extreme stress.
