D'oh!!!! Leave it to a car manufacturer to drop the ball on a good Finnish driver. McLaren, Ferrari. Doesn't matter. Finland got hosed:( Good racing though...

I just realized I wrote "Race IF Champions" in the title. Thats what I get for having a couple of beers, then trying to post.

damn battery light on the ferrari. Although it was funny that he thought the race was over, hopped out of the car, did a little victory thing, jumped back into the car, crossed the line, and did it again.
Kudos to Heikki though, really suprised me.

Very cool event.
Anyone notice Casey Mears swearing in one of his interviews? Wonder if NASCAR will fine him for that...
And what is it with the old guys forgetting to finish their laps? :)

Although we got to watch the races after the rest of the world, still fun stuff.
I loved the reaction shot of Jean Todt when Michael Shumacher is first beaten by Heidfeld. HAHA! IF there ever was an owned pic.

Armin Schwartz (sp?) upped the style points drifting around those corners in the 307. Had me cheering over here.
Sweet event, glad I was able to catch it.

Yeah, they showed us no replay of the 'contact' for us to form our own opinion. Kannan was funny about it. Beaten by a frenchman in france, I don't think so.

Do you mean Massa?
I thought it was pretty cool, those Ferrari 360 Challenge cars are absolutely gorgeous. I was very impressed with Kanaan blowing Loeb away with no experience in the car. I agree the penalty was bogus, but if you noticed from then on the officials got tough on the French drivers.
It was great to see Jean Alesi, he got old fast, I remember when he was the promising new rookie. (I guess I'm getting old too?)
I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of Kovalainen. I have always said the Fins are the best drivers in the world.

Fun, interesting, entertaining.......but I don't like the format/venue and never have.
That course was ridiculously narrow, tight and 10 second penalty for barrier kissing.
Sure, I realize what it was, and I realize it was first time in a stadium, and in Paris...but even in the Canaries, outdoors it was better, although there, it was really more like the WRC special stage stuff you occasionally see.
I ( and no, I don't have ANY connections....a complete nobody) would make some recommendations to Michele et al for future events:
Do it at Silverstone, or Spa or Magny Cour and have event developers raise some additional jack to construct a short dirt/gravel rally type infield.
THEN, let the "world's best drivers" fight it out on a real race circuit at proper speeds in similiarly prepared cars. Let them run "qualifying type" laps individually.
Let's face it...ROC is fun to watch, exciting, etc etc...BUT it doesn't prove anything about whose really the fastest driver.......That is what we really want to see isn't it?

My favorite shot was when they showed Michael "looking ahead" about 110 degrees. Good example for noobs.

^ i agree. take it back to the Canary Islands
| artkevin | 12-13-2004 11:46 AM |
Give the drivers more then 30 mintues to get adjusted to 3 completely different kinds of cars. Put it on a real rally super special stage with some room on it and get rid of the penalty system. All of those factors made it so hard to watch and frustrating.
| BHawk | 12-13-2004 11:50 AM |
Yeah Kannan and Massa got hosed. But, we all know who really won. And France winning the nations cup... Whatever that's some kind of bull. You know they don't have the best race car drivers in the world. The whole thing stinks of a setup.

I wish Michael would have won, but I don't think the driving that this requires is anywhere close to the style F1 requires. Maybe a time attack format with only one make of car which none of them has driven previously would do more to prove who really is the fastest. I like the idea just not the format. That and the ending wasn't believable.

Don't get too excited Mika. Your last champ was Marcos Gronholm aka Finnkinstien.
I was pulling for Bourdais personally. I think he gets over looked internationally and I would have liked for him to prove how good of a driver he really is.

When I noticed this was going to be pavement I was less than enthusiastic with the very possible boring predictable pavement.
I was wrong. A cool event.
I still want to see Shuey and the rest of the pave pounders get on some slippy stuff.

I was sitting with some Scots (who were pretty bummed at how slow Coulthard was), and they knew driving pretty well as do I, and the only match where it sounded like Schumacher was really trying was against Loeb.
In person, he was SO fast, and could get on the throttle so early. And his lines were the tidiest. They kept showing him on the big screen at the Stade, and he looked REALLY cold. One Frenchman next to us suggested that he wanted to lose so he could get inside, in the heat.
But Schumacher was clearly the best driver in the house, and none of us put it past him to be conscious of the PR value of not winning every time.

I was referring to Finnish drivers(not champions) in general. In WRC alone, there's Gronholm, Paasanen, Tuohino, Rovanpera. Several co-driver's as well(if that counts;)) In F1, there (was) Hakkinen, Mika Salo, and currently Raikkonen. Now Raikkonen and Salo aren't champions, but Raikkonen very well can be if MB can make a car that stays together for a season. He is one of the few that can put the fight to Schumacher, like Hakkinen did back in the day...

I am just jealous that we as Americans have little to no presence in the international series. And yes, all of the F1, rally and co drivers count. I actually am a big fan of all the ones you mentioned but Marcos Finnkienstien Gronholm.
| finnRex | 12-13-2004 11:15 PM |
Gronholm comes across as an a-hole...and chances are he probably is:( He's much of the old school Finland. A lot of the folks up in the motherland are stoic. Showing very little emotion, and when some emotion comes out, it's often negative. Doesn't always make out for good PR...
I think one of the reasons America doesn't represent so much worldwide is 'cuz they have borders. They think nothing better comes from outside of the U.S. of A. Don't get me wrong, there's a LOT of great stuff in the U.S. A lot of things to be proud of, but sometimes ya gotta open the eyes...Instead of looking at Nascar and Indy, check out F1 and WRC. I'm preaching to the choir here, for the most part though;)
I'm just proud that a small country like Finland(less than 6 million in population) can represent worldwide relatively well:) Hence my name...:) BTW, we're ok in hockey too;)

Just out of curiosity, how could you tell Schumacher wasn't really trying except against Loeb in the world champions challenge?

To my eyes, as a total American, I like Marcus and think he comes across very likeable. Maybe it's because I've followed him for a few years and understand his personality somewhat and have seen what is actually a very good sense of humor.
I totally agree with your assessment of the US.
I also agree on your third point, which was what I was getting at earlier with the "best drivers in the world" comment. For such a small population, you have a disporportionate number of F1 and WRC champions.

The coverage was really dissapointing. Maybe it got better in the last half hour but I shut it off after the first hour. I found the competition factor boring. I was more interested in the driving techniques and there just wasn't enough meat on that aspect.
I found it kind of amusing that they had to add the chicane before the bridge for the 360s, after one of them cracked its windshield after landing. Ouch.
Ferrari <--- No yumps for you!
Anyone know where I can get one of those buggies? Those looked like fun.

To most people though, I think/feel that Gronholm can come across as a negative person, a pessimist. I've just seen quite a few in-car interviews and he's like "i could have done better, etc..." If I had to take a guess, he's a perfectionist, and that very well may be where he's coming from. He definitely has a different personality. A perfect example is when his co-driver got a metal spike through the body of the car and went through the seat. He was like "all of the sudden" and he arm gestures the eff you gesture, showing how the spike came up through the seat. I cracked up big time, and I think that shows his personality well.
I think that the U.S. will slowly come out of the shell as far as F1 goes. The Red Bull team took a step in the right direction. It's just that the F1 competition is so fierce, and the U.S. doesn't have a venue that could make the transition from said venue to F1. Europe's got the F3, F3000, Formula Renault, and I know Brazil has quite a few formula venues there as well. But gettin the U.S. into a loop of competition will take time...

Ok, id anyone get a ittle pissed when shumacher, and loeb were beat... and then they got to move on because of bull**** penalties? Their opponents never hit the wall!!!
I think Loeb and Shumacher were fine with it... but you cant have your two biggest stars knocked out in the first round can you?.... Well I'm sorry but that totally ruined the race for me...
The spirit of the whole thing is for a bunch of different racers to get together, show off for the crowd, and basically have a good time... sure everyone wants to win, but I think it really taints the event when there is such blatant cheating... leave it to the French to cheat poorly
