Drifting on the street - those doing it should be netered with a bear trap
Drift on a controlled area / track - Yeah, why not? It used to be a fact of racing life before wings and radial tyres. F1 cars up to 1967 make awesome drifters because that is what they were designed to do.
as much as I hate street drifting, I love seeing some controlled sideways action on the track or in a rally.
and the video made me laugh. good find.

oh, but don't compare drift to rally, they aren't in the same ball park. drifters maintain the slide as long as possible for style, rally cars slide the car ONLY when it's the fastest way around the corner. on tarmac grip wins in all except the tightest hairpin turns.

You're a figure skater. You practice and practice and become a better figure skater. You compete nationally, internationally, and ultimately in the Olympics. You're so good, other figure skaters look at you with envy.
And then an ice hockey player skates over and calls you a [wimp] (edited to remove more accurate, but censored, terminology).
And he's right.
Welcome to the prestige of drifting.

Full scale drifting can be pretty entertaining and IMO qualifies as a sport about as much as any other subjectively judged competition. It does require practice and some level of skill to do it well so I think that is enough.
IMO RC drifting is for those that don't have the wheelmanship to actually compete. And the car in that video was really slow, I'll be impressed when they are drifting a 12th scale car with 6 cells and an 8 turn  I slide my Micro RS4 on the kitchen floor, does that make me an RC drifter?? NOOOOO!

It is a "sport" but like Car 187 said, it's not an objective competition, it's completely subjective like Figure Skating. So it's a cool show, sport, etc. But IMHO it's not an objective competition, you can't definitively measure who is the winner. (fastest, longest, etc)
It would be the equivilent of say a Football game, where the team scoring less points won the competition because they had some cool jumps or tackles while doing the event.

IMO, drifting is for those that couldn't hack it in real motorsports, that requires real skill. Nothing but wanta-be's to me. Is drifting cool, maybe for the 1st time viewer for 5 minutes... seen one drift car, seen them all... its definetly not worth the exposure they are getting in the rags that should be going to other legitimate motorsports!

It must be a cold day in hell, because I'm about to defend drifting! I have to disagree with that, drifting does take skill, the good Japanese drift drivers are really tallented. Drifting around a parking lot like US events may not seem so amazing, but the mountian roads used in Japan for grassroots drifting are serious business. Any hobby in Japan is serious business, especially anything to do with cars.
but in re-reading cadprowrx's post his attiude seems to be trying to invoke a flame war more than serious conversation, so I give up...

Any activity where the primary purpose is to look good isn't a sport in my book.
Are the drift drivers talented? No doubt about it. More talented than me? Yup, but you know what, I don't care. I'd much rather be fast and ugly around a race track than slow and pretty.
Depends on what you like to do. Is it more important to be fast or look good?
Eric

Drifting to me is the pavement equivalent of freestyle Monster Truck racing.. Drifting is interesting, requires skill, and has interesting cars, but is more or less show vs. sport. I can't get too excited about it. After all, wheelspin is the slow way around a racetrack.......

That being said organized drifting is rice!

ill have to stick my nose in here. i have been into drift since before it became popular here. before there were bandwagon drifters. before 86 carolla and 240sx became hot items. from the first time i watched it i knew it was a very difficult thing to do and i gave it the respect it deserves. i have since then tried it in a few cars and just maintaining a drift can be a challange. let alone back to back drift with the door open:p . drift on dry pavement is way harder than in teh wet or snow because things happen in a hurry. drift isnt a bubblegum sport, so lets not treat it like one.

Actually, I read articles about drifting in Sports Car and Grassroots Motorsports but couldn't remember if they'd actually gone ahead with sanctioning. So, yeah, I got the memo, but it didn't make enough of an impact to stick with me.
I like drifting. I think most rally enthusiasts must like drifting because the highlight videos and really good pictures are of rally cars drifting around corners. It's that ragged edge, almost out of control nature that makes the sport so exciting to watch.
Some of my fondest memories are of driving around for hours in second gear in my '69 VW in the snow. Sideways most of the time.
As a sport unto itself, I could take it or leave it. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to tune in to watch it on TV.

If so it takes away some of the credability to me.

Drifting is all about car control and is very difficult to do, even for professional racers...just ask Richie Hearn and Hurley Haywood!
Those 2 were among some very accomplished, professional racers invited to do a drifting feature for a car mag (Automobile IIRC). Well, most of the pros did just horribly, especially Hearn and Haywood. They kept spinning out and could not drift worth a damn. I think a couple of the pros did so so.
These guys are professional racers, that's all they do. They've been racing and driving cars on the limit in competition for many years and could not get a grasp of it. Drifting is for real.

If you'd asked them to drop their pants and pick up olives with their butts, they probably wouldn't be very good at it either.
Which means either they aren't such good drivers, or...
...drifting is like picking up olives with your butt.

Drifting has been around in the US long before 86. There's a little series called the World of Outlaws that use 700HP motors in sprintcars that spend alot more time sideways and spinning than straight and driving with traction!
Is it a motorsport? Sure, just as pro skateboarding, freestyle motox, skiing, and yes figureskating are sports.
Is it racing? Nope....was it ever billed as such? Maybe incorrectly.
