What wins shows... part 1

What wins shows...
I was wondering what type of things seperate the show winners and the just "hot looking cars".
Bobalouy 01-07-2003 02:28 PM

Cotton balls in the wheel wells!!

Car shows are the most boring form of car competition ever, but I think It helps to have a really really clean car.

either go chrome and lights route, or keep it simple and go smooth and clean......what most suby owners choose......

wow there are some really helpful people here.....

in my opinion:
originality - not over done with mismatched kits and wings
some kind of "pinash" - something that would make your ride stand out from any other car to a judge, whether it be some really clean graphics or even a wild paint job.

basically anything that gives you style but is not overdone will get you points.....original yet slightly refined

You can go for the "I am over here see me" look with the wild paint jobs and the big body kits. That will get you the looks of people that don't really know much about cars. They saw the ad in a news paper or mag. and decided to go. Yeah it may get the attention of the show people but that does nothing for me. I like simple, JDM looking cars. No big body kits, no wild paint jobs. What is better to me and the other guys I hang out with is when someone from a well known race team or engineer from a well known product company comes up to ask who owns the car. They tell you how they like the car, that you did a good job and that they like the car. If you think about it they did not have to come over there to see your car maybe they were told about my others and had to see it. Judges have to look at everyones car. Something to think about.
WRXThis 01-07-2003 06:04 PM

My tunned WRX lost last year to an almost stock WRX that had video screens. Go figure.
jdmimpreza 01-07-2003 06:57 PM

Its all about presentation. Clean cars, awsome mods. The judges will look at the car in and out from how clean your wheels are to the inside of the fender well.

The reason for all the body kits and graphics, its adds to the presentation. You can have to Suby's exactly alike, the judge will chose the one which is more clean and has more details from body kits, to sound systems, to how glass like the paint is.

mmmmmm girls...........

Here's a question, not to sound like a jerk (no offense to any race/nationality/creed/whatever you want) but how come 99% of the car show pics I see have asian/hispanic chicks?? And how come 90% of them are dressed as school girls???

Not like I'm complaining or anything; just curious... Keep em comin! She's in my top 10 list of hottest chicks EVER! :D :D
M E R C U R Y 01-07-2003 08:12 PM

i think its got to be clean with all the basics, plus some stuff not seen as common

im not the fastest RS out there and i know that, so i work on presentation, 2002 i saw out of 19 major east coast shows,
5 first places
3 second places
6 best subaru
1 first place street class
and a 2nd place mobile video

my car is plain looking and boring, but i got some gadgets that impress when i present. when i present, i doo the same routine over and over cuz it works. first start with the basics, your suspension, wheels body parts, interior, then i get the the uncommon stuff, which is what wins shows.

one show, this Black WRX with all JDM stuff was supposed to win, according to all the judges, but when they came to my car, originality outweighed JDM and performance. Thats what the jugdes told me.

but if it was a race, id be last definitly.
M E R C U R Y 01-07-2003 08:15 PM

and if i was on the west coast, id be losing all the time.

west coast is just a totally different level.

I have actualy never entered a car in a show so I was wondering exactly how are the cars rated? Do the judges just walk around and look at the competition or do they actualy inspect each and every car?

That's my car!!!

Mercury, i would agree with you on this one. Car shows and judging here is so cut throat! Luckily a few judges saw that it's not the graphics/crazy paint and useless bells and whistles.

Clean is my motto, too much crap is just clutter.

Presentation plays a big role as well.

Most important factor: your attitude. Be proud of your mods and your hard work. Don't be to the point of being boastful and arrogant! Judges see that.

by the way, mercury ... you're car is hot! ;) you'll probably do good here in socal show scene.

HEy...
Thats my wagon behind the hot school girl!! LOL! Her name is Lynn if anyone is interested. As for show cars and shows. On my wagon I go for originality,Cleanliness and rarity of parts (JDM). Cleanliness plays such a big part in your presentation. Also, when you are being judged don't leave your car. Explain to them what you have done to the car and show them what is rare or your centerpiece if you will. I really like to explain my suspension and brake setup because it's my bread and butter as is my interior. I also usually print out a sheet of specs to give to the judges so they can refer back to it when the final judgement comes around. I have only placed 3rd in my first car show with the wagon and I was pretty pleased with that.
Hope the info helps

well alan does pretty well i guess he went 4 the clean look... a few mods and well u can see the results... tr to be original.... i guess... but clean as can be... thats what wins... and if u dont take it to every show in the country... only a few... the less it is around the more people want 2 see it...
M E R C U R Y 01-10-2003 05:22 PM

the green RS is very nice!
i like it.
beobe99 01-11-2003 03:57 AM

reason for most of the girls being asian, or hispanic is mainly because its a asian/hispanic scene.

To do good at shows it goes different ways i think. you can have serios audio, vidio set up along with wild paint, kit etc. but done very clean. wild usaully grabs the judges attention. but you have to have eveything perfect. NO scrathes, over spray, rips, or uneven anything. molding done right, crazy spot for tvs etc. etc.

it never hurts either to have a huge front mount, polished up turbo etc.

youll see alot of guy who have turbo kits on whatever, and there only running like 3psi, and its just there for show....

basical a car show is a who has the most money to spend on the car. BUT also at that point you have to have taste.

and like the one guy said make sure you are there when you get judged to explain any not so noticable mods to them.

I was at a small show in jersey. got judged. then later one my buddy went up to the judges and said "so hows that hybrid subaru doing" and the judges was like HUH? and my freind was like that rs with the wrx engine in it...5 mins later there was like 5 judges checking out my car like wow. (after they allready judged it) but i have some chips, etc. from actually driving the car you know.

I lost that show. from what i heard the guy that won was good friends with the judges:rolleyes: that doesnt hurt either .
mista618 01-11-2003 04:52 AM

wow...she is pretty hot
Ethan 01-11-2003 06:51 AM

So far, I've only entered in two shows, one show was totally unfiair (after the show was over I asked the judges what class the subarus were placed in "Subarus? There were subarus at this show?" is what he said) the other was just a little smaller. There were 7-maybe 8 subarus at this show. I managed to win 1st place in the 2dr class. Which means I beat out all the civics/integras etc at this show. I was placed in the Street class by the way. Anyways, I talked to the judge while he was judging my car, and here's what I learned...

First off, basically what you want to do is earn more points then the next guy. In order for this to happen, the judge needs to know what he's looking at and what you've done. (Like was said earlier) a sign or mod sheet (though sign would give you a couple of points [I'm talking like acryic sign and stuff]).

You also want to have something done to every part of the car too, hence more points. Interior, Exterior, Wheels, ICE (stereo), and Cleanliness. Make sure everywhere is clean, wheel wells are really important AS is your rubber! I got marked down because he guy found some dirt on my rubber.

I can't really say much more then what others have said but I can say this, you don't need stickers or clearn corners (signals...etc) to win. Though stickers will give you a few extra points for appearance, but only if they look good.

One thing that counts really big though is originality. Easy to do in Subarus (compared to Hondas). In the custom category, I got full points (10) because of my turbo (on my RS).

Though, the judge told me that he really likes Subarus. He knew his stuff that was for sure, but he was a little biased, so I wonder if I really would have won.

But thats all I have to say about that. (HEhe after the show some girl in a prelude next to me was all pissed that I won and she didn't and was talking to the judges about why I won :D, but even I could see I had way more done to my car then she had to hers)
M E R C U R Y 01-11-2003 11:17 AM

beobe99 have we come across each other at a jersey show?

i think the spec sheet is a great idea. i use one. i staple it to my judging sheet or wherever it is your supposed to fill out your mods. there is never enough space to fill out your mods.

i also bring along posters as part of my display. it gets people attentions to have something to look at besides the car, then they ask to see whats in the pic, which draws in a crowd, then the judges hear about it.

poster display click HERE

i was fortunate to win something last year. this upcoming season will have a lot of hybrids and WRXs that will spank me at the shows, so it was fun while it lasted.

one thing is for sure. if you lose, dont complain. judging is opinionated, and if your doing a circuit, the judges will remember you as the idiot that complained and cried and that cant be good for your points if there is a choice between you and a close call.
M E R C U R Y 01-11-2003 11:40 AM

its all about the money
and i have to agree with beobe99. the most money usually wins.

Eddie from my newimagemotorsports.com, E36 TT WB CF full audio wins alot, pics

Dan from newimage and his IS300 also, pics

then theres tony santos supra from rixplosion.com / skr racing

Alex Nguyen rx-7 from ISSelite importstreetscene.com

you get the idea.

also those fortunate to get sponsorships have it easy.
glilly 01-11-2003 12:33 PM

cleanliness, cleanliness, cleanliness. I can't state the importnance of that enough. I've been doing shows for over 4 years. In my experiences, i've won shows when i shouldn't have and I've lost when i should have won. So many factors come into play, different shows score different ways. I like to use Hot Import Nights scoring as an example:

Exterior Body Mods
Paint (cleanliness, originality, graphics, apperance)
Engine (Mods, cleanliness)
Undercarriage (cleanliness, paint/powdercoat, plating/polishing, suspension)
Wheels (cleanliness, appearance, plating/polishing)
Interior (cleanliness, unusual features, accessories)
ICE (in car entertainment)
Overall appearance
Lighting display (overall, originality, appearance)

Use this as an axample of what to do. A lot of people forget about undercarriage and displays. It's pretty hard to clean the underside of your car, but even if you just wipe down the suspension components, clean the exhaust, etc... tah will be more than the next guy did. A simple display also give you an advantage, where most people don't use any. Take a wheel of and put it on a stand, have a display board of your mods, even a roll of carpet is enough to make your car stand out.

Anyway, I could go on and on, hope this helps.

Greg ;)

Not all import models are asian. This is my girlfriend that has been on many import websites and many vendors booths (Nopi, HIN, and many more)

That car in the back ground is from Insane Racing it has been on Nopi TV and also been used in many tv ads. That is the same girl as the first one.

Have not really won anything with this car a couple of local shows. But it was on Xtreme Imports on TNN, along with a righthand drive XSI Honda Integra also from Insane Racing. It also has been in some vendor booths. Talking to the judges (east coast even more important) will help. Most of the judges more on the east coast do not know what JDM parts look like for the subaru. I have been to shows were judges do not even know the RS was not turbo from factory.

Ha! At last years HIN in New Orleans, the judge thought my IC was another radiator!!!

i see alot of guys refering to HIN. anyone ever win at a HIN event?

i know this years schedule has a hottest subaru catagory, finally. i hated going to HIN events last year.
Ethan 01-11-2003 11:30 PM

Yes, for some reason HIN is coming to Seattle twice this year. I'm plan on enter two of them :D

The one show I mention earlier where the judge didn't know there were subarus was...I think...Import Revolution, its by the creators of HIN. But from what other people tell me, its nothing like HIN.

Also, if people are looking for stickers etc, OR a sign board (arcyric, I think its made out of) there is someone on this board that does that type of stuff, its his buisness I guess

Just something to check out, if you're shopping for one.

My WRX won "Hottest Subaru" (1st place in class) at Hot Import Nights in Dallas last year (2002). That was the first time HIN did a Subaru class. We had well over 25 Subarus showing. That was quite an honor to be selected from all those entries. I was even more surprised when they called me up for the 4th place in the "4-door mild" category. Especially since I have no fancy lights or graphics or stereo system (stock, baby!). The theme to my car and show approach has been performance orientation. It is very competent on road course tracks.

You're doing the right thing getting advice from other people who have experience with these shows. Greg Lilly (glilly) was instrumental in helping me prepare for HIN (even though that meant he had stronger competition, too). I must mention, the next weekend at another show, he took 1st place and I took 2nd place. It's all good!

BTW, last year was pretty good to me on the show scene. My wife Debbie and I prepared and entered the WRX in 5 different shows and brought home a total of 10 trophies. But, this year I know the competition will be tougher, as more people have been doing more mods, whereas I've been slowing down on the mods (it's that cash flow thing).

Having said all that, every show I did, I went with the attitude that it would be fun to participate, and I like to get my car clean anyway, and that if I don't "win" anything that's quite fine, because I'm having fun with the car and the scene and making friends and such. I'm happy to send you a one page profile on my car if you're interested, just PM me with your email address.

PS, Ethan mentioned Underground Graphics, that's the company Greg Lilly owns and operates, they do fantastic work, Greg and his wife are great people, and they're very supportive and participatory in the Subaru enthusiast community. Just thought I'd add the plug there!

GoodFinder :)

Okay the time has come and I am going to enter IREV this weekend. I noticed alot of you mentiones having a mod sheet of sorts. Does anyone have any pics of one or of anything like this they have used? I just want to get an idea of I should be doing.
