carbon fiber hoods part 1

v_dubs37 02-09-2005 05:09 PM

carbon fiber hoods
i've researched for days and came down to 3 companies. VIS, Seibon, and ABS dynamics. anybody recommened any hoods or not. thanks
Shifty Eyes 02-09-2005 06:23 PM

I have a seibon type cw for my 04 wagon, love the look and the quality. I guess I'm a little bias, since I've never had any different ones. They seem like they're a little pricy but the quality more than makes up for it. Bolts right up with a perfect fit, stock scoop fits perfectly on, comes with a rubber lining for waterproofing, set up for stock windsheild sprayers, and uses the stock hood latch. Its stable at high speeds and doesn't rattle one bit.

heres a pic:

I like the seibon myself. The fit is almost perfect. great quality, and they back it up.
vents have a removable cover underneath.

Id go with the Seibon!
brcewane 02-10-2005 10:06 AM

Seibon is what I have on the way. Should be here next week but my choices were swayed into Seibon by feedback that I got from local vendors, quality and latch mechanism.
abi 02-10-2005 11:09 AM

I bought a Seibon to replace me damaged hood. The hood is very high quality and lined up perfectly. I wouldn't think twice about recommendeding it.
Ultimate Collision Center 02-10-2005 01:44 PM

I would either go with seibon or VIS. The VIS I believe is full CF while the seibon is a overlay. I could be wrong though on that. At our shop we have done quite a few cf hoods and the seibon have been the best quality with VIS in a close second.

Does vis make trunk lids to go with their hoods? Also do the hoodscoops come with the hood or do you have to order that separately?
surferdude166 02-10-2005 02:05 PM

I just found vis hoods with sti scoop and matching trunks on the web thanks for the insight though.
samwY 02-10-2005 04:30 PM

VIS trunks do not fit perfectly.
wrx05 02-10-2005 09:27 PM

are you guys doign the install yourself or are you having a bodyshop do them? Seems like its something that could be done with a friend.
TygerStile 02-10-2005 10:05 PM

Seems like a straight forward install, nothing that you couldn't do yourself(with the help of a friend).
the_owl 02-10-2005 10:18 PM

easy peezy pie
Dan3381 02-11-2005 12:00 AM

i wouldnt do it yourfself but with a extra set of hands you could put it on in about 15 min's. I went with VIS on my 2000 RS i love it. Great fit and quality.:)
punkrocksailor 02-11-2005 01:51 AM

Seibon by far is the best fit and finish for under $2000 I've seen.
WRXGuyInUSA 02-11-2005 02:50 AM

Seibon by FAR.... No contest...
CoopsCustomz 02-11-2005 03:20 AM

I got mine on Ebay for a steal. I dont think their pretty nice for the price! Mine needed to be aligned but I had it done for free :D You can prolly find them for $600-800 from Carbon Products.

You guys are ****ing nuts for using a CF hood without pins. Whether they have latches or not-they break. Ever see the thousands in damage caused when a latch breaks?
fowler-04wrx 02-11-2005 04:04 AM

Is a cf hood lighter than the stock hoods?
Shifty Eyes 02-11-2005 04:28 AM

Mine doesn't need hood pins, seibon is strong enough not to need em plus it looks cleaner without. The stock hood is surprisingly light. I only saved about three pounds, that wasn't why I bought it though.
RALLYT-WRX 02-11-2005 09:51 AM

Hood
I am also running a Seibon, I have had the hood for about 2 years and I have had no problems with color fade or cracking. Here is a pic for you:

Ya, OK. When the latch breaks and you get $4000 in damage it'll be another story. I wish you the best of luck, but $20 hood pins are some great insurance against it.

I agree.
CoopsCustomz 02-12-2005 05:49 PM

I really dont see how mine would break.... It's pretty well on there. Would hood pins keep it more snug or what? I actually like the look minus the pins :]
brcewane 02-12-2005 06:37 PM

Just picked up my seibon today... WOW, beautiful quality.. not putting it on until the spring and am replacing the CF scoop with my WRB STI scoop. Here are some pics

if the hood is cf overlay, then hood pins arent a necessity because the hood main construction is made from some metal, but if it is full CF, there are big time problems with people NOT using hood pins. damages are extensive when they break, and even if seibon hasnt had a history with that, it doesnt mean that it couldnt happen under high speed/power applications. hood pins are just a good way to go to protect you and your car. get the hood pins the same color - black/CF - to help them blend in more. if you dont like that look cus you dont condone the RICER look, then grow up and realize that hood pins look hella tight. remember to get cables to tie them thangs down cus they get jacked pretty easily off the pin rails.

lata - thats my two cents

CoopsCustomz 02-13-2005 01:35 AM

alright, well you convinced me.... wheres a good place to get em and how much?
punkrocksailor 02-13-2005 02:56 AM

I had no hood pins on the Seibon hood on my STi that regularly saw speeds exceeding 140mph and never had a worry. But then I didn't have a front subframe "brace" on my car either; I guess some people are Almond Joy and others are Mounds.

My concern with Seibon hood is that when it rains, does it get in to your engine bay?
With my stock sti Scoop I have all kinds of stuff going in to my engine bay thru that location ( rain, Snow ). Does Seibon have the reverse scoop only, that will fit on the stock STI hood? What about ESX reverse hood scoop? Does someone one sell these?

MF-DIF 02-13-2005 10:26 AM

Where and how much for the Seibon hood? Also, people with VIS, will the stock scoop fit the hood? 04+ models?
brcewane 02-13-2005 12:07 PM

I was lucky and got in on a group buy and got mine for $560 CDN (taxes & shipping incl.) Which is the same as $452 US.

Here is one site that has the seibon hoods http://www.alamomotorsports.com

ohh dear lord.. not water on your intercooler. its fine you can wash your engine with a hose.

I do not have a TMIC. That is why it becomes a concern to me.

A lot of hoods that have vents in them have ways of closing the vents. The vendors will be able to tell you if their brand has closable vents.
digitalmethods 02-14-2005 09:39 AM

I have no clue why Seibon doesn't make a CF hood with a STi sized scoop. The only way I can get this hood is with a normal sized scoop. I love Seibon but I think it's time that they give people what they want. Which in my case is a CF hood with a STi sized scoop that I don't have to buy separateley. I hope you vendors out there are listening. BTW the blue WRX w/ the STi sized scoop looks very hot. Much props. I want a Seibon CF hood but I might wait and see if they make a hood with the big scoop. Just my 2 cents
