Autocross helmet

Ok guys Im a complete n00b at auto-x. I will hopefully be attending a few meets this summer. anyways what exactly would constitute as an "official" auto-x helmet? Will a dirtbike/atv helmet work? what is necessary? any pics? Thanx

If you don't have to bring a helmet in your region, don't buy one before you compete. I only bought mine (a full face hpc) after a few events and a novice school.
What you need to make sure is that the helmet you have is SNELL rated with either M90, M95 or M2000 ratings.

SA2000 rating, which means you can use it for anything. Autocross, rally, track days, drag days... Anything. And its open face too, which I find better for autox and stuff, so you can talk to your passangers.

I agree with everything but the open face. Seen too many face injuries in so called 'safe' motorsports.
| adhowe70 | 02-01-2004 01:22 PM |
I also disagree about open face... but I've also logged time in a FF1600 where a full face helmet is a must. Remeber that... if you're going to drive an open car (without windshield) you will need a full face helmet.
Otherwise, I'd say an open helmet is fine for autocross events. I'd go with a full face model for anything else that doesn't require significant communication with a passenger.

That's what I have and I like it. For autocross, you probably don't need a ton of protection. I'm also going to be doing instructional track days, and it'd be nice for the instructor to be able to hear what I'm saying when I'm going 100 with the windows down. Am I dumb to think the airbag will protect my face a little? If I had a racing steering wheel with no airbag, I'd probably have a full face helmet.

I agree but I would at least do a m95 helmet, but for cheap (in comparsion to other helmets) I would do a g force, pro force hybrid SA 200 (fire resisent) for 200$, safety does'nt come cheap. reference, saferacer.com

I agree. If my car was totally race preped (or an actual race car), i'd get a closed face helmet. Seeing as WRC and other such profesional venues also use open face helmets (yes, im aware of the difference in glass material) I think for the occasional weekend drivers a closed face helmet is not a neccessity.

Bottem line is it is your head that is inside the helmet. How much do you value your head? That should set your budget for a helmet. You also want to make sure that you are comfortable in the helmet too. For autocross it's not quite as important as you will not be wearing your helmet for more than 3-5 minutes at a pop but if you decide you are going to start doing track days and your helmet is not comfortable it will begin to distract you and distractions are the last thing you need when you are coming into a tricky section of track.

I like my Bell SR-Pro. It is really open feeling for a full face helmet, and makes me feel better when I am doing the occasional higher speed track events. In my opnion, any of the really open viewport full face helmets are the way to go for most of us, especially if you would even consider doing a higher speed session.

I like the open feeling of the open hemlet, but I like the ability to simply lift the helmet off by the bar on the full face (after uncinching, of course). This makes it easy to remove on the return run on the dragstrip, or on the way back to paddock or grid in AX.

:D When you REALLY learn to look ahead, you'll find your head is hanging out the window on left hand turns!
Hence the need for a good closed-face helmet!

Hmm... is your helmet too big?? A properly fit helmet requires two hands and sometimes a crowbar to remove!

you can buy a $70 intercom that slides into the helmet next to your ear for driver/passenger communications. it has a mic boom and ear speaker that fits fine in a full face. that's what i did for track days. for my race car, i splurged for the Terraphone setup, though.
you are only dumb if you think the airbag won't damage your face.
i just went to a Simpson Voyager full face. takes some getting used to, but seeing and hearing horror stories, i'm sold.
don't waste your money on an M rated helmet. if price is a factor, there are several cheap SA's to choose from.

Hey Z what rating is your Arai anyway? I'm looking at the Bell SR Pro also, but honestly, I want a helmet that looks pretty sharp too. All the SA rated ones I see are plain white and such, and the only nice looking ones are motorcycle helmets that are merely rated M2000.

Oh I on3d the teg 2 turns later going onto No Name Straight, you can see from the picture that he is totally off line and I was finally getting to him. That little car would rip down the straights and I couldn't get around him for like 5 laps. I finally made him really nervious after I came into Big Bend nearly door to door with him.

Just ask yourself how much you hate your own face. How much do you want to smash up your nose and break your jaw.

AX is a relatively "non-contact sport". I do not worry too much about mashing my face on the AX course. Probably a much better chance of that happening on the trip to or from the track. Of course, after a bad run, if you are inclined to bang your head against the steering wheel, by all means pick up a full face helmet. :D
| Kostamojen | 02-07-2004 07:31 PM |
Banging your head against a wheel is rather hard if you have say a harness...
| XT6Wagon | 02-07-2004 10:53 PM |
Point is...
You wear a helmet incase the animal solid waste hits the fan. Do you REALLY want to skimp on the helmet that you already have to buy? Do you REALLY want to risk running LESS protection than you can get w/o any real effort? Its like having a roll cage made, then skipping the gussets and diagonals because someone didn't make them manditory.

Your not going to skimp with a open face helmet. Just get a good quality helmet. I have been using a kevlar open face HJC for the last 4 years and have been to many track days and autocrosses. Now if you were runing a open cokpit car, then yes. Get a full face.
I am looking to get rid of my HJC this year for a GeForce GF-750.

Oh heck ya, if I had an open top car, full face all the way.
I still have yet to see a convincing arguement for full helmets in cars for occasional track days/autocrosses though.
Just as I have yet to see a convincing arguement for not using harnesses without a roll cage.
Or a convincing arguement to not use aftermarket crank pulleys.
Im just seeing the same like handful of people make the same statements constantly on these subjects without any convincing evidence or reasoning behind them, and im tired of it.
