Any one have advice on killing ant in my STi?

So when I bought my car it was parked right next to some bushes, and after I brought my car home I noticed a few ants. About a week later they were everywhere. I've tried 3 different bait traps, blowing the car out with compressed air, and squishing any ant I see. Nothing is working and I think my only option is to use a fogger, but I would rather not because I dont want to get chemicals allover the new interior.
So if any one has any info on how to get rid of these little bastards, I would appreciate any help.

Are the ants on the inside of the car? Wow, that sucks man, I've never heard of that happening before.

Yes inside and outside. I was looking to see were they are coming from but they are every where.

where are you at? heat works well... if it is warm enough, just park on a hot parking lot for a day. They WILL die within a week or so, hopefully there isn't a food source in your car. get that out first if you happen to find something bad under the seat!

THey used a fogger on the renta car i had a couple of years ago. It had the same problem as yours. Other than that you probably need to take the interior apart and find the nest and remove it. Good luck

The interior is actually pretty easy to remove, Id just take the front and rear seats out, then the carpet, if necessary the dash, find where they are and take care of it like that. Ive never had an ant problem in my car so I wouldnt really know the proper solution...or if you are driving around and see an exterminator, just flag him down and tell him you need a little help.

I had this happen when a girlfriend used my car when i was out of the country.... and left food in it. I used a variety of ant traps and bait, a thorough cleaning, and a good long sit in a hot parking lot. Then i cleaned it again to get all the dead ants out. I was not pleased with her after the ordeal haha.

I live in Hawaii so its not terribly hot(high 80's, low 90's),but it is humid as hell. I think I'll try and remove the interior tomorrow and try that. thanks

The heat/suffication idea probably would work the best...but the real question here is why did they swarm your car? Probably some food or worse yet a dead animal stuck somewhere in the car that their feeding off of..

Long list of places to check. Be methodical about it - think like an ant would - where would you hide in your car?
Raingutter under the front windshield - do you have a lot of debris or leaves stuck in it?
Check behind bumper skins - a stuck chunk of mud up there makes a mobile home for a nest.
Here's a really good one - take off the muguards AND fender liners. Any mud stuck in there is again like a mobile ant hill. Undercarriage should be carefully cleaned and inspected.
Back inside.....take out the spare tire. Check drain holes and any mud, moisture, debris accumulated. Take out the jack and vacuum and dig around in that compartment.
Shake out the rear carpet panel - leave it outside of the car for a few hours and watch for ants.
On the inside of the car - remove the bottom seat cushion to the rear seat - two bolts - EASY stuff. Remove the front seats - some electrical connectors and 6 bolts each - EASY stuff. Check the seat track areas for food or whatever. Check the undersides of the seat while every thing is out of the car.
You could stick each seat in the bath tub for a few minutes to watch for ants crawling off if need be.
Carpet - peel back along the door sills and look/vacuum underneath. Spray bug spray under there too.
Remove center console. Look for food and check under that carpet area.
Under the carpet, the Subarus have a footwell heat channel (see tube in the picture below - driver side removed, pass side installed). The tubes can be quickly removed and blown out after the carpet is out.

Check under edge of each door - mud/dirt accumulated in the drain holes should be cleared out.
Harder stuff - take off inner door panels and inspect inside.
Really hard stuff - headliner. But this is pretty unlikely - too hot usually.
Report back on your findings - curious where bugs hide in newer cars. I have more experience with ants in older cars.

If you can find an ant-eater ( I hear they roam free in Hawaii) you could put him in your car over night and let him go to work. Make sure you leave the windows cracked.

my friend had an ant nest inside his bumber on his Integra. not sure what he did about it. i think he scattered Amdro all through his interior and exterior because that stuff works. grapefruit peels also kill ants, and their queen. can you get grapefruits in Hawaii?

Your best bet would be to buy a fogger, leave all the interior in but cover the visible sides with plastic and fog with the windows up.
Wait 24 hours and roll the windows down for a day. Problem solved.
I say leave the interior in place because if you remove it and the ants live in the seats you have only temporarily solved your problem.
Good luck.

Well thanks for all the replys and ideas. The car is less than a month old and there is absoluty no food or mud in or out of this car.
When I told the dealer about the problem, they said to bring it back and they would fog it. But thats what i'm trying to avoid, because I am affraid of getting chemicals all over my new interior.
So I guess next weekend I will tear the interior out and find the nest. And if that doesn't work I'll try and find an importer for a anteater.

Your missing the point...If the dealership fogs it and they destroy the interior they will fix what they tear up... if you destroy something..Its on your wallet.

have you tried baiting?
Try putting some kind of high sugar content candy, or maybe even moist sugar in a easy for an ant to get into bowl. Just check on it and see if ants are swarming to it. Just catch them in the bowl and dispose.
Just an idea.

Cereally, if the dealer is willing to do it, let them do it.

google diatomasceous earth, it is a substance farmers use to kill insects, fleas, etc. you basically sprinkle it around and the insects are killed by it, from the microscopic sharp fragments. It sounds like utter BS but is not.

They hate mint. Try a mint air freshener... :p
Seriously though, I'd use a fogger and then have it professionally cleaned.

Try Vinegar....it used to work on the farm. They hate the smell.
| accna | 10-02-2006 02:44 PM |
I would first try every type of ant bait you can find. Different ones work on different types of ants, so you may be successful with a different one than one you tried. If that doesn't work, use a fogger. Some foggers leave residue while others do not. I'd do a little research and find one yourself, rather than give it to the dealer who will likely use the cheapest one available. If they use one that results in dead ants and no upholstery damage, but leaves a film or odor, they will likely not help you any further.

Try a mix of apple mint jelly and a little boric acid. The ants bring this food back to the Queen and youg and the rest is history. Used this recipe in a camping trailer that had an infestation and they were gon in a couple of days.

of course assuming the queen is in the car. she might be, I don't know why the ants woulc stick around if they have nothing to care for.
