when people ask me what my practically feasable dream car is, I say Porche 911 GT3 RS. Then they say " oh yea my uncle has a 911 turbo ". And then I just change the topic.

I know it's not hardcore enough for NASIOC, but I would not kick the new 911 Turbo out of bed either. AWD and a "go faster" button :) I'd probably choose it for being more practical/stealthy as a DD.

Bah! A good DD has to be a loud, uncomfortable, hard to drive slowly, snarling mess of a car. It has to remind you at every turn just how much it wants to be driven hard and put away wet.

OK, Meeting Walter Rohrl is just beyond cool!
I was there in 04. I swear, they give GT 3's out in corn flake boxes.
There was 3 996 GT3 RS's there when I went. Amazing to have 3 outta nearly 300 made in one place. It was an amazing day.

If I had a dollar for every GT3 blah-blah I pass on the track I'd be able to buy one myself (actually, I'd go for a Ferrari F430 first).
Still the new ones do look nice and seem to be quite a bit faster than the previous gen.

if a gt3 was really, really being driven well, you'd be hard pressed to pass it.. again its more driver than car. I've yet to pass a gt3 in my 944.. although any 911 is fair game :)

The last GT3 RS Cup that was going faster than me on the track crashed. Although there is always someone faster...and I'm nothing special. Just passing on my observations.

Various GT3s below 8 mins. WR himself has a 7:28 in a Carrera RS. Has anyone ever got close to 8:00 mins in a Suby? I think John Felstead was mid-8s.
Probably a lot of Porsche drivers are more show than go, while Suby track people are the opposite.
EDIT: answered my own question:
7:59.41 154.690 km/h -- Subaru Impreza WRX STi spec.C "prototype" (2004), www.subaru.com.hk/pdf/SNW0404.pdf

Not sure I got what you meant.
A stock Porsche may have leather seats but it's also got quite a bit of go.

My point, which is pure speculation and not based on any facts, is that a lot of people buy Porsches (Ferrari's, Lambo's etc) as image cars and may not be able or willing to push them hard. I felt that the opposite may be the case with people who regularly track a Suby - they may have the ability and commitment to get closer to the limit.

John, i hummbly disagree... there are still poseurs out there. And they are not always driving expensive/high powered cars.
its the driver, not the car.

I've never been to a track and I don't exactly remember why I started with this opinion. I completely agree that it is the driver, and that good and bad drivers are out there in all types of car.
I still have a gut feel that you'll find more people driving their exotics conservatively at the track, while more Suby drivers will be pushing it. But, it really isn't that important and I accept that I could be completely wrong.

Speculation about what other people are doing aside, I think I might find myself holding back a tad more if I were in a car that's worth the price of a house. Don't know how I'd feel, though, if I could actually afford to own one of those cars.

First of all, the track is almost 13 miles long and depending on where you start and stop obviously has a great influence on times. Closed lap sessions (like Sport Auto uses) are different than what drivers get on a public day (at least in recent years). The "bridge to gantry" times from public days are about 25 seconds shorter than the full lap (for say a 300hp car). And usually you cant get a lap in without some slow traffic making a big impact on your times.
I've done a few BTG laps in the 8:teens (8:15, 17...), but it is still "slow" compared to a 7:59 on a full lap. Anyhow, there are plenty of fast Porsches, BMWs and <insert favorite car here> out there. A well set up car and a driver who knows the track can spank a more powerful car with a driver who is less skilled or knowledgable on a particular course.
It's all good fun.
