Speed Channel considering dropping wrc coverage?

Wow, surprised no one has picked up on this yet:
However, Speed Channel in the USA is said to be thinking of dropping the World Championship next year. It sent a small team to Finland to make an assessment.
Welp. if WRC coverage is dropped, I have no reason to even have cable.

I'd really question the source of that information. The reason they went to the 2 hour show was to make the race all in one sitting so that it would hit a larger audience. From what I can tell, rally in the states has been picking up at a nice pace lately, especially with cars like the WRX, STi and EVOs showing up.

I hope they don't drop the coverage, but if they do, just think of all the money I'll save by not having cable anymore. $720 a year!
It doesn' t make sense that they'd drop the coverage w/ the growth the sport has seen in the last couple years. Then again every time I watch the WRC on Speed, they've only got, like three or four commercials repeated over and over. Seems like companies aren't chomping at the bit to get ad time w/ the WRC coverage. Whether that is due to poor Nielson ratings or ignorant corporations, I don't know.
Plus, other motorsports make addtional money by selling parking and seats at the track. For the WRC, people just hike outdoors and sit by the roadside. I don't know how the WRC can charge for that. That also means that WRC fans aren't really captive consumers having to buy food from their concession stands. The sport is getting bigger but it has fewer ways to make money to support it.
As for why Speed would consider dropping the WRC? Maybe the WRC is trying to charge Speed/Fox more to air the WRC in order to cover costs. But Speed/Fox doesn't really NEED the WRC. They've got NASCRAP, the Walmart or Microsoft of the autosport world. So, its not like the WRC can bargain w/ them. If Speed doesn't want to pay, they'll just drop the WRC all together and stick in another NASCRAP show, maybe a show about the men behind the men behind the wrench.

Actually I would not be surprised.
Speed totally screwed up the coverage of the series and in the process lost viewers.
Their best coverage was two years ago with the one hour follow up show and the European announcers.
When they went to thier announcers and the three hours of coverage last season they lost a lot of viewers, me included. I know many friends that stopped as well.
The announcers sucked and the shows were too long. How many times can you watch the same incar footage in one show?
Then with it on all the time it did not become that special show that everyone made sure they saw. I got complacent, with three shows during the weekend and then a follow up show and having it replayed about four times, there was no reason to tune into any one show. I could always pick up a little here and there.
The bottom line is there are not enough hard core fans of WRC to warrant that much coverage and when there is that much the fans that are not hard core will only watch one or parts of the shows. Then the ratings suffer because everyone is not tuned in at the same time for the same show.
Plus the dumbing down of it also alienated many serious fans as well and stopped watching because they were sick of Ralph Sheheen and his idiotic coverage and unbearable voice.
Essentially, Speed killed the chances of having good quality coverage with a lot of ratings. I would not be surprised if ratings are down so much that they get rid of it.
I can say that I have not watched a single event this season, two years ago, I watched every single minute of the coverage.
Problem is Speed execs are too dumb to realize what they did wrong, all they see are diminished ratings. Therefore, the show gets axed.

Speculation over at Special Stage is that they're angling for a lower TV rights price and aren't actually serious about dropping coverage...
| Akirasoft | 08-19-2003 03:41 PM |
Jimmy, im 100% with you on that annoying announcer. Similarly I stopped watching as much when they shifted to the new format. I would religiously watch the old coverage, in fact taping most of it to replay at later dates, when they changed to the new format I think i've actualyl caught the show only a handful of times. Wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy the distribution rights to the old format?

I've had Speed for three years now and I still watch the WRC religiously. I think this year's coverage has been pretty good.
Last years was a little long, but it was same day, which was great. The year before was at least a week or two behind and only an hour long. But I've been fairly happy w/ this year's coverage. Its been either same day as the end of the rally or it was a week behind and its two hours. Not bad since they have to edit three long days worth of footage into a two hour show.
And sure Ralph does not have the voice for broadcast, and I preferred the original commentator. But I do like Nicky Grist's coverage. That was a good call bringing him on board. But I'll put up w/ Ralph to watch the WRC.
Plus their virtual spectator stuff showing the differences in line and speed of each of the drivers is really great. I'd like to see meters showing the G's and throttle and brake application like they do for other races.
The only dumbing down I've noticed is how they always point out how the first car on a gravel stage sweeps the course making the following cars faster, etc. etc. But I guess its news to someone each time. Other comments have seemed obvious but that was because I'd already read about the rally on WRC.com or here. That's not their fault.
The only other complaint is that at the beginning of this year they were getting a little creative w/ their sfx and changing the speed of the footage which was jarring and tacky. They seem to have eased up on that.
Nothing is perfect, but the coverage of the WRC is getting better. I hope they keep showing it.

I stopped watching it when they switched formats as well. I usually just watch my tape of the 2000 season to get my rally fill. I would love it if they just went back to the way it was, but I doubt that will ever happen. Besides that I can never seem to find it on Speed. Every single time I turn on speed it is NASCAR. They might as well change their name to the NASCAR channel.

I agree with you 100% concerning the virtual spectator graphic. I think they should show more of the virtual spectator for really close stages so you can see where the winner made up the time.
For the last stage of Finland, it was pretty cool when they showed how Solberg made up enough time to pass Burns for second place.
The virtual spectator could be used for other racing series also, like during Formula 1 qualifying for instance. You could really analyze each corner for breaking points, corner speed, and exit speed to see how the drivers compare to each other.
I assume they are using GPS to generate the data.

Hmm I know this rumor gets tossed around every 6 months or so, but NascarChannel, ahem, I meant SpeedChannel sent the all-knowing 'neck of them all Jeff Hammond out to investigate what all these foreigners are hoopin' n' holler'n about. I guess the broadcast hasnt been to bad this year considerign the MC coverage. But then again, they "have" to work it in around any Nascrap broadcasts. The 2 hr sunday show aint bad, but I miss the days of the dailty review, seemed to be a little more in depth and you acutally got to see a Skoda in action......
.02, heck take a nickel:D
BTW, have you watch Windtunnel and SpeedNews Nascrap edition? There seems to be a increasing animosity against the sport of Nascar lately.. I just wanted to throw that out.

Why would they continue to carry it? All that many people do on this board is grouse about the coverage. "They changed the format" (So what? It's still interesting enough.), "It's hard to find" (Suddenly, speedvision.com, with its excellent program guide, doesn't work?), etc, etc.
Now, this doesn't even get into the abominable Nielsen box/diary distribution that makes it almost impossible to know, when dealing with smaller market shows, just who is watching what. But I digress.
You have to support programming that you want, in the hopes that your contribution, albeit passive, will make it better. Another suggestion, while stating your support for the programming with your continued viewership, would be to email the folks at Speed Channel with suggested fixes.
But if you don't watch, you have no right to complain about it's going away, IMHO.
It's still two hours more than we had two years ago. Further, the coverage follows the race exceptionally well, and manages to show us every critical moment. The same-day, hour-long coverage featured too much repetition. Edited for commercial content, the two-hour shows occupy about 1:25 of a 2-hour videotape, versus 1:50 of the same-day coverage. What does that tell us? Repetition, and plenty of it.
I don't know if Speed Channel has any way of monitoring, via how many cable boxes are tuned to their network at any given time, who is watching. A system like that would certainly make sense, given the two-way capabilities of cable feeds. But I watch, because I love WRC, and am thrilled that we are getting the coverage that we have.
Unfortunately, WRC is going to have to catch on with the civilians for it to have ultimate success. Period. And there ain't no 'Mericans innit. NASCAR fans turn to Speed Channel to watch NASCAR-specific programming. It seems that in this ability to find the channel they want to watch, when the programming they want to see is on, they surpass many examples of the arguably more sophisticated WRC viewer, who simply turns to Speed Channel, hoping to catch something they want to see, and grousing when there isn't any such programming at the time(s) they tune in.
If Speed Channel kills the WRC programming, it will be because they can't make money at it. Period. Viewership impacts this, because viewership leads to advertising, which leads to sponsorship bucks, which leads to a long, healthy tenure for that particular programming. Nothing runs on altruism, unfortunately.
Another way they can make money at it is to pay less for the rights to broadcast it. This might be a ploy aimed at such a result.
Sure, Shaheen is a half-wit, but Grist's comments are invaluable. His comment about not wanting to have been in the car when McRae wrapped it around a tree at Finland cracked me up. And does anyone who slags the 2-hour shows, remember how weak the Duke Video WRC recap tapes were getting for a while there? And that was only 90 minutes or so for the entire season.
If WRC goes away, I will miss it, but if it does go, it won't be because I didn't do my part, by watching every single broadcast of a new rally.

I'm not a big believer in "me too" posts, but I agree w/ most everything that's been said here- good and bad.
Ralph Sheheen SUCKS and I've written Speed about it over and over and over and..
I do like the Virtual Spectator very much! It's great to compare several cars at once and see where some drivers make or lose a little time.
(If I could only get that on my PS2's WRC game...)
I'm a bit torn on the coverage- it is certainly handy to have it all tidied up in a 2 hr show for us Yanks, and I certainly don't miss them reshowing lots of Friday's show on Sat, and Sat's show on Sun... that said, this season's quickie format doesn't have the urgency that makes me plan a whole weekend around watching a rally. Finland's same-weekend coverage was a welcome relief to that stupid week-long lag they were doing!!
I've written Speed about that many times as well.
Absolutely great point about the in-car footage; they must have hours and hours of stuff, yet in 1 hr, 25 min worth of coverage I get in-car repeats! EVERY time! ***?
That's my advice to all of you- write them! Give 'em Hell!

I hate to be sour or complain to you guys but............
A few years ago Speedvision (now SpeedChannel) had WRC on TV but it was 6 months in delay. Then a couple years ago they show same day footage. Now we still get great programming within a week of the race..and I still hear all this complaining!!
Myself and others on this board lobbied hard for SpeedChannel to show WRC on TV on a timely matter. When they did this I was more than happy. However its still seems that people are mad because Ralf S. is commentating or for some other weak reason...who cares!!! WE still get great WRC coverage!
Is it better than nothing?? YES! Is it better than what we had some years ago? YES! Is Nicky Grist giving some cool insight to what it takes to be a WRC driver? YES! Come-on guys, SPEED is giving us a gift.
In conclusion, if you are unhappy of how SPEED is covering WRC, just keep doing the same thing you are doing and it will go away.
However, myself and some others here too I hope, will continue to watch WRC on SPEED, support it, and write to SPEED about its coverage.
Cheerfully,
Davis

I was listen to the WRC.com webcast from Finland, and they said the guys who came over from SPEED to see the scene losing their minds having fun, and watching the stages. If they were there on a fact-finding mission, I think we're okay.
Sheheen - suxor, but is learning. His perf, is much better, and it sounds like he almost understands the sport now.
Grist - the only place he'd be more valuable is sitting in my passenger seat.
we all obviously have internet access - let's let them know how we feel, send a post over to the Mitsu and Ford forums. We ave to create our own hype for this coverage, so rather than preaching to the choir, let's save the souls of those heathens over at Speed Channel, hmm?

I like what a lot of you are saying on this board... I am fairly new to Rally, but I love it! I have my friends come over & we watch the rally's when they are played on SpeedTV, just like a lot of people do with important Football games...
UNFORTUNATELY, I have to deal with advertising a lot, so let me tell you what I know about it. Whether a show will stay on the air or not is all based on the Neilson Ratings(spelling?). Someone on forum already mentioned the "diary", but I will explain again anyway:
The Ratings system is all based on a small PERCENTAGE of the population that get handed these "diaries" to fill out. The questions that get answered all pertain to how much time & what shows a person is watching. Quite often, they will only write down the things they remember most...
As far as I know: The regular, analog cable system does not/cannot record who watched what, and when. Perhaps the new Digital Cable can.
One more thing I can tell you: WRC & SCCA Rally's will continue to be shown as long as Subaru keeps paying the cable companies SO MUCH MONEY for their TV comercials to run specifically during the WRC & SCCA Rally's. :p
The TV/Cable/Radio/Print mediums are nothing but whores for money (can I say that on the forums?). They will NEVER turn away money.
I also agree that except for the 2 hours they are broadcasting the WRC & the 1 hour for the SCCA Rally, this station should change it's name to NASCAR TV. :furious:
There are so many other worth-while races that should be covered more, but the majority of the US market seems to only recognise Circle Track! :furious:

I whole heartedly agree. I am a new fan of WRC but I think the coverage is great. We get two hours of rallying every couple weeks or so! The footage is high quality and personally I like the commentary because since I am new I learn something new every race.
I make a point of recording every episode and watching it straight through. I hope they don't change anything to the coverage of the WRC and SCCA.

I make a point of recording every episode and watching it straight through. I hope they don't change anything to the coverage of the WRC and SCCA.

I talked to a girl I used to sle.. (dont say that Chad) Immean know, she works for Cox in town and does some local programming. I offhandley mentioned to her that I "watch a certain motorsports program once a month" and she jumped on me and said "World Rally?"
I was amazed, but she was full aware that WRC has pull in the SpeedChannel lineup. She says the simple fact is that Speedchannel pays 80% less for the footage from ISC when they delay the coverage. Again, it blew me away that she knew about our strife, but it is true.
Now for business sense, that makes all this gray area clear up. Doesnt it?
So I guess we should just dillegently watch what they give us, when they decide to give it to us, and watch them make thier business decisions as the may. It will work out I think....
Heck they whacked down 2wheel Tuesday didnt they?

AMEN!!!
You guys who say you don't watch the coverage have me shaking my head, are you WRC fans or not? Personally I don't miss a race, regardless of who is reading the script.
Chromer's point about SPEED leveraging for a better deal is real insight... that's how these things are always done. If you follow the trend, they are really making a effort to offer as much racing as possible and dropping WRC would not fit that pattern.

I was suprised last week to see one the good ole nascar announcers was sent over to Finland to cover the race.
I just happended to be surfing channels (really) and I came accross this person on Nascar today doing a big deal on his WRC experience. IN his southern drawl all of his comments were glowing. He was wearing an official (nice) WRC shirt and had alot of footage and also explained basically what WRC is to the nacar crowd. He did a good job.
I have always applauded any coverage Speedtv gives rallying. However they recently took a great deal of 2 wheel tuesday away for more nascar coverage. Grrrrrr:furious: I will be writing them very soon. They may be loosing one of the watchers that has stuck by and up for them for a long time.

Actually a big part of the hit 2 wheel tuesday took was due to their new hour of prime time automotive coverage which cuts into NASCAR coverage far more than anything else.
Last night (Tuesday) Autoweek and Motorweek were on from 8-9pm which for me personally is great because these are two of my favs and there were never on at regular/convienient times.
I knew there'd be some pissed of bike fans but for once NASCAR is not to blame-- this is the first time SPEED has reduced stock car coverage.

Well, I would admit that No I am not a true hardcore fan.
I like the WRC. I like all kinds of motorsports. I love racing. I watch just about everything except NASCAR, IRL and Grand Am.
But I am not a hardcore WRC fan. And that is the problem with the coverage. There are VERY FEW hardcore fans that will put up with the lame announcers, replays of incar footage and overally crappy coverage.
Sure you do because you love the sport, and thats great. That is the way I am with sportscars. The networks butcher the ALMS coverage, but when I am home I watch it anyway (normally I am covering the event live though).
However, just like WRC, there are not enough of us hardcore sportscar fans either, which is why the ratings suck for that as well and the ALMS has to buy their coverage from the networks to promote themselves.
What I tried to make clear in my first post is that soemtimes a ton of coverage can be too much for its own good. Sure you major fans love it and watch every second of it and many watch the replays as well.
However, when there is a bunch of hours of coverage and replays all the time, the average fan will only watch it occasionally or catch small parts of the coverage. It doesnt become a "must see."
When there was only an hour of coverage, that was pushed all week on the station before being broadcast, and not having it replayed at all, it became a "must see" for all fans.
Those that only watch a little will make sure they catch that one show. Those that are rabid fans also watch that one show.
So in other words you had twice the amount of people all watching at the same time, rather than half the amount of people watching spread out over several shows.
See the difference? All at once will make for better ratings and also means that they have to sell less advertising for the one show as for three or four times the air time.
So, what I am saying is that the coverage issue may have hurt the ratings for the shows in the US. Remember, most are not as pure a fan as you are. Is it better to have hours and hours of coverage and super low ratings that only a few hardcore fans watch, or good coverage for less time that brings everyone to the table at the same time?
I dont know. Its all speculation on my part. For myself and many of the people that I know, we watched far more coverage when we had the one hour recap show by a quality commentator than I do now even though there is much more coverage. And I think that you will find that with many people.

I agree about the less is more approach. When they had the nightly 1 hours programs it was hard for me to catch everything... I'm usually not home each night over the course of a weekend, or at least I hope I'm not. And being fan that I am I hated watching day 2 without knowing what happened on day one. The 2 hour show they have now is the ideal amount of coverage IMO.
We're pretty similar I guess, I'll watch sports car racing if I happend to catch it, but the only events I make time for are Sebring and Le Mans which I watched most of this year. BTW SPEED did a superb job with both.

My thoughts exactly.
I liked the same day coverage the most though. I knew exactly when it was going to be by only looking at 1 schedule. I love the new years day coverage too. I've only been able to catch 1 rally this year because its on at the times I'm usually not able to be at home.
I never got why NASCAR is so popular... as far as I'm concerned the only difference between any normal driver on the road and a NASCAR driver is the size of their nut sack...
And to the people that think the coverage is repetitive. What do you mean? Its not like stage 1 they'll be driving then stage 2 they'll be waltzing in the woods like a bunch of fairies. Just like NASCAR is endless left turns, WRC is endless ammounts of danger filled roads. What would it take to reduce the repetitiveness for you? More shots of the pirelli girls? (the real reason Burns is coming back to subaru, the pirelli girls!) Maybe follow a driver around for a whole day after the race? I know, pick 6 WRC drivers and make them live in the same house to have their lives taped......

SPEED has a website. Not only do they list daily programming schedules, but they even have the air time/date for every single event for the entire season.

Regarding WRC, if you want to have coverage, watch. Even if nobody knows you're watching, you really never know. If you don't watch, you deserve what you get.
As far as the constant slagging of NASCAR, that racing is hard and dangerous. It's also fast and close, and that's why fans like it, even if it isn't everyone's cuppa. Anyone who thinks, as another poster said, that the only difference between a NASCAR driver and a normal road driver is testicular capacity, needs to do something like taking the Richard Petty Driving Experience.
That's hard enough, when you're after fast lap times. Now, imagine 39 other drivers, all wanting the same spot on the track, bumping, rubbing, drafting and battling for the groove. Nope, NASCAR is hard as heck.
The other common mistake made in threads such as this one is making a correlation between NASCAR programming and lack of WRC programming. There is none. Speed Channel isn't saying "Boy, I sure wish people would stop watching these cars play in the dirt so we could show more NASCAR programming." Trust me, the network is very aware of the saturation point, just as they are aware of not putting all their eggs in one basket.
Other motorsports series, and the viewers they attract, is critical to the overall success of a motorsports channel. You simply can't have people watching when there's one particular sort of programming on, and not watching when there's something else on. I would wager that NASCAR fans are more faithful than WRC fans when it comes to supporting their favorite shows. Speed Channel wouldn't program them if nobody watched.
As I said earlier, you can argue all you want about the qualities of Shaheen, but he isn't enough to make me not watch the WRC coverage. It's still light years better than we had two years ago, and prior to that, we had none, or intermittent coverage, at best.
I have tapes from 2000, and it's easier to track the racing on this year's tapes. Virtual Spectator rocks the house. I even have the ESPN2 WRC coverage, and all I have to say to that is no, thanks.
Is anything better than nothing? Often, yes. More importantly, something can often lead to more, if it is supported by a vociferous fan base.
Just my .02.
Kevin

Once the PC based virtual spectator is back around I don't think I'll even bother with the SPEED. I still enjoy playing with the VS software that was available for a short time.
I mean, you don't watch FoxNews in the hopes they pick up more detailed world reports. You go where the info is. Its not our task to watch whatever comes down the line just because its coverage, its their job to lure us in with good coverage to start with. We let them know what we want partly by watching, but only those who get SPEED via digital cable box actually matter (at least in this area they make you sign an agreement when you picked up the box that says "what shows you watched can be monitored with this equipment" in very fine print very well hidden).
If our market is too small, oh well, drop coverage and let another network try it. Its nice to have nightly reports of what went on, but normally by the time speed gets around to putting the show up I have all the info I wanted anyway. Now that I've found all the sources for info I don't need speed coverage, its nice, but they can't expect me to plan my day around something that is delayed so long I already know the results.

I respect that, you want the results ASAP. For me, motor racing is too visual a sport to not watch... I love the cars, I love to see them in action, to see the drivers, etc. To follow results without seeing footage would is like reading the script to a movie or listening to your favorite DVD.
With as much a 4-5 weeks between some rallies, I can wait a few extra days to see the whole thing unfold in two quick hours, along with commentary and insight (some good - Nicky, some bad, Ralph).
I agree that once you know the results it's almost not worth watching... I taped the German GP and then accidentally stumbled into a article revealing who won. I did go back and watch the tape but it was tough to get through. It didn't help that the race was a little dull, but that's a discussion for another thread. :D

I've read all of the complaints regarding WRC footage and I have tried to understand it.....but I can't. All I see is pure American selfish whining.
Either you want to watch WRC or you don't. It's that simple.
If you are a true fan, you just want to see the guys, the cars, and the fans standing where you are saving your money to be standing come Mexico next year!
Hell, I changed from cable to dish, ran 200 ft of 2 lines of coax cable up winding stairs and around around my living room JUST SO I COULD WATCH WRC.
You have to keep in mind what WRC is...an up and comer. Why do you expect 'NASCAR' grade footage? It isn't NASCAR! Argue what you want for how it's better and NASCAR sucks.....but that's what the US as a whole wants. And before you jump on me as a NASCAR defender, back down. I can't stand it either, but that's how the cookie crumbles...it's what most people want. Supply and demand fellas.
Say what you like......and watch what you like. If you in some way feel you've been personally 'dissed' because of a change in programming....keep crying and leave the programming to the rest of us. But for those of us who check WRC.com daily, pay the horrendous subscription cost for Rally XS, and proudly wear a SWRT hat each and every day.....we'll take whatever coverage we can get our hands on!
