Heated Seats (WRX)? part 1

CoreyRED02 10-31-2002 06:59 PM

Heated Seats (WRX)?

Does anybody know the part number for the heated seat assemblies for the Candian WRX's? I know Subaru makes heated seats for the WRX but are not available for the U.S. I'm sure the two blanks below the E-brake are for seat heaters and I want to try and get a pair. Any info. will be helpful. My local dealer is an idiot

Thanks,

I might be an idiot, but can you put seat heaters in cloth seats?

I have only ever seen them in leather seats.

Yep. My mom has them in her Audi, girlfriend has them in her Jetta.
Avey 11-01-2002 12:07 AM

Yeah those two blanks are where the switches are in my car. They are the same switches found in some nissan cars. There are two settings, on the lower setting they work great, on the higher setting they just burn you after about a min. My guess is that they just used they unit from a Nissan Maxima. My friend has one and the heater cycles on and off every two minutes or so, just like mine. Also his switches are exactly the same and in the same spot on his car.
Scoobie Newbie 11-01-2002 04:11 PM

Just to add clarification here, heated cloth seats are possible and as everyone in Canada knows, standard with there WRX.
jpmarotta 11-01-2002 04:46 PM

SO...

... where can one buy these?

Do I have to go to a Nissan dealer?

How much do these things cost anyway?
Scoobie Newbie 11-01-2002 04:49 PM

Have you tried the dealership? Mine puts the units in other Subaru's such as the TS for $250 a seat CAN. That said I would have to believe that your dealership could get you the unit or at the very least the number.
Avey 11-01-2002 07:43 PM

I hear you are better off ordering an aftermarket set, since there is no wiring for the seats in the US version. If you want the OEM look just order the switches from a 2001 Nissan Maxima. Same switches and they say "Nissan" on them anyway, I checked it out when I was installing my Security system.
Shifty 11-01-2002 07:50 PM

I remember about a year ago, someone found out how much all the OEM parts for the Canadian model were - some crazy high amount. You can get seat heater kits from leatherseats.com - just as good and cost a fraction of the price, and I believe the switches the kits come with fit the OEM openings on the center console were the Canadian switches go.
Wagon Guy 11-02-2002 02:51 PM

U.S. versions suck.. They get heated seats, and heated mirrors, as well as getting no roof rails if they choose.

How can we get the Canadian switches, and heater units?

and the standard wing on the sedans....; )
Alex L 11-03-2002 02:25 AM

The heated seat heating element cost about 250$ per element, there are 2 per seat... so it's almost 1000$ to get the both front seat heated...
Scoobie Newbie 11-03-2002 12:40 PM

That price is different then what I was told from my dealer who told me it would cost $250 per seat in the TS. I wonder if he was mistaken.
iv30 11-03-2002 02:19 PM

I would contact www.leatherseats.com they sell a heated seat package for $129 a seat including the switch the are made out of a cloth material so they will also work with the cloth seat.
CoreyRED02 11-03-2002 07:24 PM

Thanks for the info guys. Does anybody have pictures of the switches installed form leatherseats.com? Just curious what they look like.

Thanks,

Just to sum up a bunch of things already said:

1. The elements will NOT work from the CAN (Canadian) cars -- different wiring, and HELLA expensive. You CANNOT just get the CAN seats, rumor of different rails and certainly no provsion for wiring.

2. You absolutely can have heated seats on cloth - came on my Dad's US Outback

3. You WILL have to remove the cloth seat covers to install any seat-heater elements (they're like pieces of fabric with REALLY tiny wires running through them -- one for your butt, and one for your back)

4. Leatherseats.com has a good deal - They sell "Carbotex" seat heaters. Had mine on this morning and my @ss is nice and toasty - I absolutely LOVE them.

5. I would recommend that if you are going to remove your cloth seat heaters, you MAY want to consider upgrading your interior to leather - it's not a "huge" take off the seat covers and replace them, but it's a big enough job, and it makes the interior look amazing (in my opinion) I have seemed to turn myself into the "leatherseats.com" champion. I have no affiliation or anything with them, but helped to organize the 3rd and most recent 4th group buy. I love my leather and my seat heaters, and would say that if you are going to go through the trouble of taking off your seat covers, you may want to consider putting on some nicer material in its place!

imo, heated seats on cloth seats are meaningless. sure it warms your butt up, but cloth seats dont get as cold as leather in the first place.

now for leather seats, that's a must-have item for chicago winters..and yep, i have them on my infiniti. :D
Wagon Guy 11-04-2002 08:25 PM

Too expensive for a novelty.:(
CirrusWRX 11-04-2002 08:47 PM

If you live in TN, then most certainly heated seats would be a novelty. But I live in PA where this past week the temps have been hovering between mid 30's to upper 40's -- and it's only going to get colder. I swear these things are one of the best additions to the car.

Oh, and in my dad's Outback, that has cloth seats, and I think, while they're certainly not as cold as leather, the seats heat up MUCH faster than the vent-heat from the engine. And the faster my butt warms up, the happier camper I am.

Like I said, if you are "in the area" where it doesn't warrant seat heaters, it may be an expensive novelty, but some place that gets cold for at least a few months out of the year, I am loving every [email protected] second of it!!
CBoldman 11-04-2002 10:16 PM
imo, heated seats on cloth seats are meaningless. sure it warms your butt up, but cloth seats dont get as cold as leather in the first place.
What you have to rember is that the point of heated seats isnt so that it will warm up the seat material, its to warm up your body. On my Audi, I use the heated seats right when I get in the car on cold mornings (8 degrees were I live) and the heated seats kick in before my engine warms up to produce some heat. Thats my opinion :)

Here is the only use for the space in my car...

Figured I'd give my $.02

I have the heated seats from leatherseats.com.. and they kick arse. If it gets even remotely cold in your area they really help alot. I had mine on all winter last year.

A note on the switches.. they fit perfectly in the *stock* location.. but too snuggly. If you put them in without trimming they do fit, but the switch won't work because of the pressure on it. It's extremely easy to fix this with a little sand paper or razor blade. As far as I know this happens to everyone who installs these switches. Oh and they light up. When the car is on but the seats are not, both indicators on the switch are lit. When you turn them on the setting that you have them on stays lit and the other goes out.

I had organized a gb on these last year, I bet if there were a bunch of you it could happen again... although someone else would have to organize it ;) These heaters should not cost you over $250 for both seats and required tools. (hog rings and pliers). You can also get them with massagers for extra $$$
Wagon Guy 11-05-2002 08:42 PM

Well I am up on the KY border and it gets cold here too. Open flat land and wind. I keep looking at the leatherseats.com but I see no heaters? Someone here has put these in the stock cloth seats? How involved is the project? For 500 bucks I'll do it for sure, but it was sounding like 1200 I thought.
CirrusWRX 11-05-2002 09:40 PM

$1200 if you put leather in at the same time - that would be front and back seats, and 2 seat heaters, and that's the retail price. Any sort of GB would be cheaper.

As far as the amount of work involved, you could probably do it in an afternoon. It involves taking the two front seats out, then removing the center console. The wiring is straight forward, and you can run it under the carpet. Getting to use hog-rings and stuff might take a little getting used to, and putting the cloth covers back on might be a little difficult, but I did both my front seats in one afternoon, but that was after having the practice of the back seat first.

I just think it's a lot of work if you are JUST going to put in seat heaters by themselves. Of course, it would only cost about $300 or whatever, but you still have the stock cloth -- it's not that it's tremendously bad or anything, but I couldn't keep mine clean!!! My g/f's hair (1.5' long, blond) small little fuzzies, and dirt seemed like magnets for the stock cloth. I love my leather and every penny I spent on it, I think was worth it.

I just would recommend doing a little bit of thought before saying, "I want seat heaters." And then 3-6-9 months later say, "wow - now I want leather and I have to do the front seats over again!?!"

Seat heaters for both front seats should not cost you more than $250. There were 10 of us that did the gb at that price and I'm pretty sure all of us had stock cloth seats.

I'm not really a big fan of leather.. it's an enthusiast car.. which means if you drive it to it's potential you don't want to be sliding around on leather. Maybe not a problem for the bigger members but I'm 5'7" and 125 lbs.. I have a hard enough time staying put in the cloth seats :D That and while we have a heated seat option I dunno what you could do to keep the leather seats cool in the summer.

As for how involved the project is.. an afternoon pretty much sums it up. You may sit and scratch your head for a while trying to figure out how to get various pieces apart.. and it doesn't help that both seats are different.. but it's not rocket science.
CirrusWRX 11-06-2002 10:35 AM

PS - I have thrown together a PDF of instructions on how to remove the two front seats and install the seat heaters and leather. It's still in Beta form as I get more time to work on it, but it gives a good idea on how to remove the seats, the cloth, and then how to install the seat heaters, where to wire em up, and gernarally how to put em back together.
jedimaster71472 11-06-2002 10:57 AM

The seat heaters would be nice, but what we really need in the Northeast is heated mirrors- is there a way anyone knows of to make that happen?
Warmwaffles 11-06-2002 11:52 AM

heated mirrors

I was told 2002 + wrx's have heated side mirrors.
jedimaster71472 11-06-2002 12:22 PM

Hmm, not that I'm aware of- if so, I have no idea how to activate them- if they didn't come with them, then how do you install them?
CirrusWRX 11-06-2002 12:55 PM

AFAIK, no Subaru in the US has heated side mirrors. They are STANDARD (I believe) in Canada, however. We could see if one of our friendly North North America (that was a joke) brothers could help us out. I imagine such a thing has been done before on this whole "i-club" forum, so maybe a search is in order, while we're at it.

My understanding is the heated mirror button goes in place of the small blank button by the mirror controls in the center console area (look at your car and you'll see what I'm talking about.) My dad's outback has em, and they're great. Why they offer a "cold weather package" on an Outback and not on EVERY CAR is beyond me...

But again, our problems will probably arise due to the fact that our cars probably have some lack of wiring, or an incompatible wiring harness.

Heated Mirrors

My guess is that they are activated by the "defrost" button. I don't think I've ever seen a seperate button/switch for the mirrors.
Gentex does make an aftermarket heated mirror, not sure if it's available for the Sub tho. Gentex makes most of the OE heated mirrors, turn signal mirrors and auto dimming, compass, temp. mirrors so they are good stuff.
jedimaster71472 11-06-2002 01:52 PM

Do you need to buy a new mirror or is there a seperate heating element which you can install yourself?
JCampbell 11-06-2002 02:04 PM
...is there a seperate heating element which you can install yourself?
The Gentex is just the mirror that fits in the OE housing. There are only a few models that include the housing for some reason.
Avey 11-06-2002 03:04 PM

Re: Heated Mirrors

Yup, they turn on when you turn on the defrost. JFYI they are very powerful, they will dry a rain soaked mirror faster than the rear defrost can remove fog.

Heated Mirrors

I just checked Gentex's website and they don't offer the heated mirrors for the WRX. :(

US Heated seats?

I am looking through my owner's manual which is the same for the WRX and the Outback Sport. It shows the heated seat switches and operation. So, does the US OB Sport have a heated seat option?
WRXtasy227 11-08-2002 10:20 PM

I remember when this was a forum about seats! Anyway, How does this leather seat kit affect the factory side airbags? Can you still use them? If you have to disconnect them how would you get the SRS light to go off. I'm one of those guys who's not real big on airbags after I got a concussion from one when I totaled my last car so I don't car if they are no longer functional. I've seen leather in the WRX and IT IS HOT!!!
rlburg 11-09-2002 01:33 AM

I have the leather seat kits from Classic Soft Trim, and could not be happier with their quality/look. The airbags are completely functional, and the seats even have an embossed "SRS" logo on the sides, just like the factory seats. I got a two-tone set with graphite in the middle, with the rest black. The seats also come with a 30,000 mile warranty. I had a bit of excess wear on the drivers seat, and they replaced it no questions asked.
CirrusWRX 11-09-2002 01:34 AM

got it in my car and I absolutely love it. They use something called a "french seam" (I believe) that is technically an easily breakable seam from inside pressure, ala airbag.

I will be totally honest and say I do not believe anybody has tested it, but apparently, there should be absolutely NO problems with side impact airbag functionality and seat covers from Customized Factory Interiors (aka: leatherseats.com)
