painted my calipers today part 1

new_wrx_owner 09-17-2002 09:09 PM

painted my calipers today

i just received blue caliper paint by G2 today. It is brush on and has minimal prep work. kit comes with caliper cleaner, bush, paint and sticker. i put like 3 coats on and masked the pads and rotors, but besides that thats it. The longest part is that they want you to wait two hours before u install the wheels back on.
I got jack stands and did the front and then the rear. My silver sedan wrx looks pretty good with the blue calipers. Has ne one else painted their calipers. I took some pics ill post once developed and i figuer out my printer how to scan see ya later

Did mine in black a few months ago with G2. Looks great, very subtle.

I have a white car, and I was planning to trim it out in blue, so i bet blue calipers would look nice :)
boxer02 09-18-2002 06:10 PM

where can i find this 'g2' stuff. i was lookin at painting mine, and would love to see a pic of your car, as i have silver as well, and was considering blue.

thanks for the info.
SAW 09-18-2002 08:55 PM

G2 and FoliaTec may or may not be the same product. Most people feel they are both good products.

I bought mine from a local speed shop for about $35.

Do a search on google and there are many different online retailers.

What ever color you go with....it looks a thousand times better than that spotted dull aluminum

where to find G2 caliper paint

I bought my paint from www.seriousauto.com. They are located in california. It costed me around $50 including shipping(paint is $42 and shipping i picked out was$8). They said figure on 6 business days to receive the paint being that i am on the east coast my be less for others. The car looks sharp. Like SAW states the calipers are subtle but they enhance the look and also protect and seal the calipers as well. You will defidently notice the wheels, etc with the calipers painted. Since the badge under the wrx label on trunk lid is blue, I am going to stick with blue. Silver and blue i think looks nice together. I hope this helps. If u get it take ur time and they give u plenty of paint to do three coats and i had plenty left over. I crawled under neath and painted behind the calipers and under them. I was patient and I think by not rushing it i got a better result. Also it comes with caliper cleaner. Since my wrx is only a month old with less than a 1000 miles there was almost no need but i cleaned them any ways. Happy driving I know i am

GOD I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i just painted calipers on tuesday. I gotta develope film and then ill attempt to scann them and figure out how to attach to this forum. I like the look of the calipers. I think it is worth the $50 I spent. take care

Question: Isn't it true that once you mixed the paint with the reactor, the paint will self-dry within a couple of hours? Thus, do I need to paint all 4 calipers at the same time? Or, should I paint the front first, and then paint the back like what "new_wrx_owner" did? Do I have enough time?

Thanks,
Brian

Go to http://www.subaruplanet.com . Larry Ganz sells it. I wouldn't buy it from anywhere else. (i don't have it yet as i may sell my car in the spring for a new yellow rex!)

I ordered some caliper paint from a company in CA ($10 incl. shipping). I painted mine yellow since I have this thing for yellow :) It turned out really really good IMO. I painted the front ones first and then the rears. Took about the entire day to dry. I was driving by night time. I just used the ghetto method - covered up everything with newspaper and garbage bags and then just sprayed away.
new_wrx_owner 09-19-2002 07:06 PM

Yes it says in the instructions once u mix the catalyst into the paint you have between 4-6 hours. What i did was mix half the paint and half of the catalyst together, mixed the paint wait 5 min and then mix again. Now the paint is ready. I had masked off the areas i thought were close to get paint on them. I jacked up the front, jack standed the entire front, removed both tires and painted the calipers. I waited the 2 hours and then reinstalled the front tires and did the same for the back. The paint that i used was a brush on kind. I didnt want to get into spraying in a confined area and chance ne overspray but i heard spray paint works good too. I gave the car the 24 hr cure time it asked for. I drove the car today. When walking towards the car in a parking lot u dont really notice it until u get closer since i chose blue instead of a more noticeable color like yellow or red but as u get closer the blue gives it a nice accent touch. IT s nothing to fancy but i helps dress up the car and add a little color.

I plan on installing APC rear lights that i saw in a advertisement in import racer magazine adn a scooby exhaust.

"new_wrx_owner" did you take your calipers off when you painted them?
REXOne 09-19-2002 11:39 PM

I painted my calipers red a month ago with G2. Gotten a lot of compliments on them. :D :D

SEXY GC8, I didn't take my calipers off and it turned out fine. Just gotta be careful not to drip all over the place.
new_wrx_owner 09-20-2002 09:26 PM

No i didnt take my calipers off. I masked areas i thought i might get paint on and then i just brushed it on while on the car. It dries anice glossy finish.

OK guys let it go. Why not compliment him on the good work done, instead of turning this into a how to jack up your car thread?

Yet more proof that i-club is full of pricks who all think they're better than the next guy.

Easy there turbo...... just a polite observation, no need to go calling people pricks. If your feeling a bit touchy thats no call to be dispariging others.

How would the guy ever know that placing a jack stand on an axle is not a great Idea if no one ever tells him? hmmmm?

No one said anything mean, in fact, we both simply implied something might be amiss. If he wanted to ask he could.

...then YOU jump in there and have to start slinging names about, and its really thoughtful of you to make such an insightful generalization. Im sure everyone in the club is just thrilled at your assessment of their character.

...so...whos got the issues?

anyway.....the calpers do look nice.

your right i didnt know about the jack stand on the axle. So if i have to remove the rear tires again where would be a good spot. I plan on removing my exhaust eventually and going with a scooby sport one. Where is teh best place to place jack stands on the rear and while we are at it the front also.

Im not much of a mechanic and i owned a escort was the first car i owned, a chevy s10 blazer anda pontiac grandam gt. This is the first time i bought a car that has some real nut and handling and practical for my family. I plan on keeping the car in tip top shape so ne insight will be great. ITs a montha and a half old 2002 with a little over 1000 miles on it and its a automatic.

I know what u will say next but i did it for the wife and the car is still fun even witha auto. I impress my friends alot and they are car fanatics. Do u think the tranny problem will also be a big deal for the auto matics since the computer is shifting. Justa question and also since i got on automatics does ne one know how many subaru made of the 02 4eats. I had to check in the north east like 5 states to find one. I know they are a lot rarer but by how much. Thanks for everythind

Ps should i be concerned about the one time i put the stands under the axle? I wont do it again. If so what should i look for? the car still handles great.

talk to u laterz:cool:
ashtaron14 09-23-2002 08:55 PM

If you check out your manual, it'll tell you the 4 jack points for your car, it's on the sides near the ends... but you can also jack at the crossmember or the rear differential... just safer spots...

Sunny

I jacked my car up at a bad place and almost broke my sideskirts... :(
new_wrx_owner 09-23-2002 09:21 PM

i did use the jack points with the jack provided in the trunk. Where i ran into troubles is that once i jacked up the car i put the stands on the axle to hold the weight of the car. I didnt jack up the car on the axle just placed the stands there after i used the scissor jack. I checked my car along the axle and i see apparent damage hopefully. Thanks for ur reply.

I have not had to put mine upon stands just yet, so I havent really studdied the underside for the best spots.

If you read about on the forum a bit I think you will find that the collective opinion is that the 4EATs are fairly strong and trouble free. (its what I drive, and Im in traffic too much to have a manual)

The autos do seem to be harder to find, Auto wagons especially. When I bought mine, there were only 13 or so on the east coast available to choose from.

I would like to think that as long as you placed the car on the stand (on the axle) gently, and that it was brief, that there would be no harm done, but I think that it is something that you should deffinately avoid in the future. Its certainly not a load bearing suspension part. If it got bent in any way im certain you would be feeling or hearing some sort of vibration in short order.

Hope all goes well
