Water, water everywhere! part 1

drevilrocker 08-01-2005 08:12 PM

Water, water everywhere!
If water gets sprayed into the hood scoop, can it harm the engine? I'm so careful when I'm washing the car not to spray directly into the scoop.

The other day, I was driving in the rain and a big truck passed me and it was like a tsunami hit the car. Right after, I could hear the sound of water draining SOMEWHERE inside the hood. What's up with that?
TacticalNuke 08-01-2005 09:03 PM

Really it shouldn't do much. Heck the STi has a stock IC sprayer anyway.

As far as the other components, they should be alright. I wouldn't want to sit under a waterfall, but I wouldn't worry about a splash.

..but where is all that water going that I hear it draining? I thought it might be hitting the windsheild of the car behind me, but i would need a telescope to confirm that...
IIdiceII 08-01-2005 10:01 PM

i wouldnt worry bout it..yo probably heared the water dripping down on to the ground.
drees 08-01-2005 10:02 PM

You can get a LOT of water in through the hood scoop and be fine. Nothing behind or under the IC can get damaged by water, it's all safe.
pdippel 08-01-2005 11:52 PM

The owners manual doesn't say "Don't drive in the Rain!". Could you imagine the money it would cost them to fix all the cars that got water damage thru the hood scoop? Water in the scoop is engineered into the design.

maybe I should get a snorkle for the car? do rally races ever go through deep water?

Yes... The oceanic tribecca rally is a 42 mile races through 4 foot waters. I think the JEEP CJ7 94-2000 snorkle will for your car fine....

No, don't listen to these guys. Your hoodscoop needs to remain dry because there are a lot of sensors on the intercooler that feed directly into the ECU - if it gets wet the sensors could short out. You can tell this is happening because you'll get a lot of turbo lag. You need to get a scoop plug.

the land rover discovery has a "water" package that might work with a little trip to home depot!

A scoop plug is not needed!

The WRX has a bilge pump located near the back/bottom of the engine. It comes on at-speed and when there is water present. It will pump the water out of the engine bay when needed...but only if the water came in through the scoop.

Thoe bilge pump is probably what he was hearing. But anyway, a scoop plug is still a good idea because it saves wear and tear on the pump - and those pumps are expensive. Don't ask how I know.
RoadRashed 08-02-2005 12:16 PM

+1 for the scoop plug. The plug will also keep large insects from damaging the intercooler.

and the plug will keep the air out too, those scoops are so big that at high speeds it can actually cause loss of traction for the front wheels....thank God these cars are AWD.
Samuelleeogden 08-02-2005 12:17 PM

you have to watch out though, cause the bilge pumps are a recall part on all 04 and under WRXs.. it was fixed in 05. they burn out quickly, and there's no CEL code associated with them, so people drive around with them burnt out, hit some rain, and bam, hydrolock the engine and crack the turbine housing. water doesn't compress. turbo tries to compress. turbo loses...

i have a hood scoop plug (04 STi). absolutly reccomend it... it's just plain smart.

Did you guys drill the drain hole for the sump in the drivers side front fender or the passenger side. I had a hell of a time trying to figure the plumbing on the passenger side with the snorkle and air intake. Drilled just behind the drivers side wheel well seems to work well. Manual over-ride allows me to spray passing cars.

Don't spend $300 on the import JDM one. Thats a waste of money. Most of the time you can find a local machine shop who can easily machine one out of steel or aluminum. It will be much cheaper. That is what I did.

Now whenever I wash my car, I open up the hood, pop in the plug and wash away. Now my bilge pump only has to run when it rains.

n00b! The JDM ones don't even require opening the hood
CameyDeuce 08-02-2005 02:17 PM

I'm going to look in to a new bilge pump. I've been driving around in R during the rain lately b/c my pump burned out when I forgot to adjust the timer on it and left it running in the heat. Thank goodness it's been a drought around here so I haven't had to drive in R too much.
AJ711 08-02-2005 02:18 PM

Find an old school RS owner. They have the backing plates you'll need to completely cover the intercooler to ensure that water does not screw your engine up.

I'd keep it there as well, you never know when some freak rainstorm is going to hit and flood your engine.
ms3p 08-02-2005 02:18 PM

Come on guys..He can't use a scoop plug after he hits boost @12mph. It will damage the diamond plate floorboard.
EnforcerPSU 08-02-2005 03:04 PM

where did this guy go??? you think he would be reading this..and asking question...

Jesse00 08-02-2005 03:44 PM

ok, is the scoop plug something that plugs into the hood scoop so water (and air) cant go into the hood scoop that feels the intercooler with cold air? If so, then why not just get a scoopless hood instead?
FluxXxSTi 08-02-2005 04:27 PM

Where can I get a scoop plug?

Pshhh.. that's nothing compared to the trout! If I hadn't recently had to replace my pump with an updated 05 model, I never would have made it across that lake. :furious:

I cant believe that some people are taking this seriously.
shemoves 08-14-2005 06:54 PM

Rally, you have no idea. You live in SoCal where it hardly ever rains (um, not including this past winter). For folks that live in hydrolific climates a scoop plug can be very effective in preventing water insuction.
